A while back when I first got my Verizon Note 2, I used Adam Outler's Casual method to root my phone to Stock. I don't mind stock and root mostly for the Tethering.
About a week back the OTA notice hit my phone. I have declined the notice/update twice giving myself time to look for the root update. I found this thread by Beans: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518704 ........ It seems right but this thread by AdamOutler says not to use ODIN: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045563
So I am a little confused. I just want the update but don't want to mess up and not have my tethering ever again.... or brick the phone.
As a newbie, it's a scary task. Someone please help point me in the right direction. I just want the 4.3 Stock. If there is a thread for my situation I couldn't find it. I search "casual TWRP 4.3 OTA" and other similar variations.
I can still get to the TWRP 2.5.0.0. I have also downloaded the ODIN and started it... looks simple, but there are no instructions.
Someone please help me...
Thanks

Welp, couple things...
#1 - The link you posted above is the from the Note 3. You want this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
#2, The ROM gets flashed via CWM or TRWP like normal, it's only the radio update that gets flashed via ODIN. That shouldn't affect your current unlock/root status.
#3 - If it is only ROOT you are after, the 4.3 OTA is Rootable, just not unlockable. So if by chance you accidentally take the OTA you should still be able to ROOT and install your Tethering app. You just won't be able to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery/rom.

So if you are OTA'd to MJ9, how do you unlock?

You cannot. Best bet is to not take the other and unlock your bootloader. If you take it you will probably be locked for a very long time.

Correct, you cannot currently UNLOCK the OTA MJ9 boot loader. But you can ROOT. Which will allow you to tether.

I would think long and hard about taking the OTA...although root is available, you may want an unlocked bootloader at some point, and there is no guarantee that is coming to the official 4.3. My guess is that it will not simply because this phone is 18 months old and the skilled developers that put in the time to do things like unlock bootloaders move on to newer devices.
If you managed to use Casual in the past, Odin won't be a problem for you. Below are the steps:
Odin takes about 5 minutes total...its really easy.
Download Odin (it's just a simple windows program). - http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1304094576
Make sure you have the latest samsung drivers - http://www.mediafire.com/?hzlnda0l5t8qyes
Download and extract the firmware from the first post in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
Save whatever 4.3 ROM you choose to your external SD card.
Power down the phone and boot back into download mode (volume down, power and home at the same time).
Open Odin, plug in phone...Odin should recognize the phone and you will see the com port noted in yellow.
Check the PDA box and put the firmware file (unzipped) in the PDA slot. Click start and 30 seconds later you are done. Phone will reboot into recovery at this point.
Then you can flash any of the 4.3 ROMs (including stock) in TWRP (I use 2.5.0.0 too). I have tried them all and Sophisticated 3.0 has worked the best for me...I will be trying beans 23 as soon as it is done.

Thank you so much. Updated and everything seem to work just fine, but after some use it started rebooting. I am going to put on Sophisticated as you suggested. Hopefully, it will be more stable then the stock ROM.
And I can't get the WIFI Tethering to work. Which Tethering app are you using? I have unlimited data... and need to make sure Verizon isn't charging me for no reason.

I had some reboots on the stock rom too...but once I went to the other roms (I tried Nephilium, Sophisticated and N3bula, but had the best results with Sophisticated) and I haven't had one reboot.
As for the wifi tethering, on stock you need to flash the file below (some of the newer roms, including Sophisticated have it baked in).

The reason you ask what? You didn't ask anything. And as it's been stated a million times, no unlock method avaliable and unlikely there will be one.

Eh, he is one of those that puts the question in his title instead of the body of the reply. But as @akellar said, there is nothing available.
Thanks so much for all the help. I got everything working right based on the instructions from this thread. I initially had an issue with the "Wifi Tether" because I was using a 3rd party app. Instead the correct app is the "Mobile Hotspot" app. It might be named differently for other carriers, but for Verizon it is "Mobile Hotspot".
Again thank you for all the replies.
Thank you for Sophisticated v3.
Thank you Adam Outler for the original Casual root.
And Thank you runandhide05 for the "Mobile Hotspot" hack!

I have a Galaxy Note i717 from AT&T that I rooted. Worked great.
Yesterday I upgraded to ICS via Kies. Worked great.
Then I proceeded to root it again using odin.
Unfortunately even after all the things done it now will not boot up at all.
All I get is the S a m s u n g logo. I can put it into boot mode and the computer see's it but nothing more.
If anyone can point me to any rom/bootloader/ etc. I would be most grateful.
Or just let me know what to do and where to get roms. I did search and there are many for the i700.
I guess I need a bootloader and rom right?
Sorry folks. Point me somewhere else will have to get another phone.
T h a n k s ...
Others would tell you to look in the dev section for the stock rom (its usually called something like "in case of brick) I've had issues issues getting it to work but Im certain it was user error as to why it didn't work for me. But another option that I think could work would be to get your phone into download mode and run the ics upgrade thru kies again. You'll lose everything in your phone but I think it'll get your phone up and running again. But before you do any other that...did you make a nandroid back of? Or have you downloaded any roms to your phone because if you did you can just enter cwm and reflash any rom you may have or just flash your backup, backups are so important when doing these sort of things, saves a lot of head aches.
Edit: after reading your post again it says your phone messed up after rooting, try and re run the root file thru Odin, I kinda sorta remember reading something similar to this were people had issue trying to root. I'll try and find the thread.

this happened due to rooting with the Gingerbread method...so using Nash reply run/reinstall your Official ICS...and to root....
see My Links in red in my signature...go the GNote Super page....you should see what is being used to root the Official ICS...I used it and lots others, there prob more methods out there, but I found this is the easiest and more proven method....
Cant miss the info on GNote page regarding Rooting.
so to recap...since your believe you have bricked your phone...
use the method Nash replied to you with...put into download mode....run the official ics, you will need the model, serial number of your phone...
let us know how it works out for you...

And once you're rooted and all fixed up, enter cwm and create a backup. These are great because no matter what you do to your phone as long as you can enter cwm you'll always be able to fix your phone via backup.

I wanted to mention, I'm not sure how you updated thru kies originally (legit update or emergency update) the method you'll be using this time (if you choose to fix thru kies) is the more or less emergency method. I wanted to mention this because when your in download mode and connect your phone to your PC and run kies, kies will try to connect to your device but will time out over time...it took me 2 days of Q and A before I realized kies won't connect with phone in download mode, but that's OK. Once phone is connected click tools/firmware upgrade and initialization, and as bigjoe said youll than need to input model and serial numbers (all caps) than click OK. You'll have a few prompts afterwards but yo basically on your way to a running phone.

Brick = nothing at all happening on phone.
Samsung logo = bad flash (corrupt file used)
Brick can sometimes be revived with a JTAG device.
Samsung logo means re download file, re read instructions and relevent thread, and redo your work.
Don't be too anxious -you will fix it.
I suggest using Kies upgrade > emerency firmware method. Download mode is the key.

I was able to go to DEV Section and get the full AT&T ICS Rom. Used ODIN to get it back to factory ICS.
Then (with great care ) re-rooted it using ICS root stuff. I have it all in case anyone else needs this route. Else follow instructions above.
Thanks all. I think for now ICS is where this will stay. In fact Gingerbread was good enough except for not being able to use Chrome.

Hi folks. I am not allowed to post in the developer forums since I am a new user so I figured I'd try here and hopefully some developer will be watching this forum.
I want to root my new Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. I found the thread regarding the all in one tool for doing the root and installing recovery.
I followed the instructions, downloaded the tool, connected my phone, invoked the tool and selected Option 1 (Root my phone). The cursor skipped down one line and then nothing. I waited 15 minutes to make sure it wasn't doing anything but that's it, nothing.
I am new to Android and therefore new to Rooting so I thought this all in one tool would be perfect for me to get the job done. But I now have no idea why nothing happens when I invoke the tool and select Option 1.
Is there somebody in this forum who can help me please?
Thanks ............ Rob

Once you select Option 1, you need to go back to the main windows to uncheck one box (F something) and then click start before it does the rooting. I missed it yesterday also and just keep waiting until I realized there was a step I didn't do.

Did you enable USB debugging and third-party? USB debugging can be found by tapping on build number (i think) under about phone like 7 times. Developer options should appear in your settings after that. Third-party sources is under security I believe. Hope that helps!

Root just allows you to hack the software on your phone, and the "unlock" refers to the bootloader. It does not unlock the phone for other carriers; this is done (from what I understand) by dialing a specific set of codes, generally provided to you by the original carrier of the phone if you have an account in good standing with them and you tell them you plan on travelling out of the country and need to use GSM. I have never needed to do this and as such only have a minor theoretical knowledge of the subject; I would appreciate it if somebody with more knowledge on this would confirm or deny my suspicion that you are better off trading the phone for an AT&T/T-Mobile one that actually was meant for GSM, or otherwise obtaining one.

This is the original bootloader; not the stock firmware. You need to flash this after you successfully root, start the phone, start SuperSU, and update the SU binary.
The full stock firmware is rather large and available here:

might not know as much as i thought
thanks for telling me this first of all, so let me see if i get this right and im hoping you or someone will tell me if im correct or not. The all in one root method does that take care of the whole SuperSu, and update part or do i still need to do that after the root tool does its business? With unrooting do i just need to flash the stock firmware in odin use triangle away and i should be good correct, im not quite understanding the whole thats the original bootloader....the file that downloads is a .tar i thought that was firmware/rom....what do i need the original bootloarder for exactly? I honestly am to the point id be willing to pay someone who has a credible rep to video chat and walk me through it all

The original bootloader is locked and doesn't allow for us to use the exploit to install SuperSU and root the phone.
We are installing the unlocked bootloader via Odin...
Then running motochopper to exploit a vulnerability to gain root...
Then MANUALLY (this can't happen automagically) opening SuperSU and updating the SU binary...
Then rebooting the phone to make sure you still have root (personal preference)...
Then re-loading the original bootloader (we don't need the modified one anymore!) via Odin...
Then we are done!
The steps in the how to are very precise and accurate. If you would like to PM me, I am available for another hour or so.

Well said. Only correction is the bootloader still remains locked. The recoveries included are loki patched. This bypasses the bootloader. All roms and kernels are loki patched so flashing them is safe. This is as close as we're gonna get to an unlocked bootloader for now.
Ah. I was under the impression the bootloader was unlocked. Thanks for the info.

Could be a couple of things first make sure your using the cable that came with your phone. Try switching usb ports. Alsi try rebooting your pc
My Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (Model # SCH-I545) is stuck at an error screen with a yellow triangle in the middle and a picture of a phone on the left and a picture of a computer on the right. It also reads: "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I JUST purchased this phone and the latest update was installed. I attempted to root the phone but after researching I found there is no current solution. I searched more and found a thread (that i can't post because I am a noob): I followed the instructions hoping to remove the update and return to stock, however the process did not work and Odin failed. Even though Odin was through, my phone still showed a line like it was downloading. I tried everything to reboot my phone, but could not find a way to do it, so I pulled the battery. Now, I cannot get past this screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this awesome blunder?
P.S. I am prepared for the scoldings I plan on getting...
I literally just posted the same question. Any help would be appreciated if you can figure it out. Ill return the favor if i can get any information :good:
If you took the latest update I'm not sure what the answer is because I haven't been willing to take the update.
If you were in mdk before the yellow triangle then all you have to do is Odin the mdk kernel.
I'd imagine if you are on the latest then odining the latest would take care of it also but again, I won't take the latest so I can't say for sure
sent from my blu vzw gs4
Thanks Jakemkv, I will update you as I get more info. I will also be looking at your thread, you can bet.
Dubbsy, where can I find that new mdk Kernel?

If the phone was running ME7 then you can ONLY flash ME7 again (at least right now).
Grab the image from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357235
and flash it using Odin.
Thank You
That worked great! I am back up in running and waiting patiently w/ the rest of us that updated... THANK YOU!!!!!! :highfive:
Thanks
I can't thank you enough. The S4 is my first Android phone and after 3 weeks, the USB connection on the phone broke and I finally got my new one today. While I was setting up SuperSU/Titanium Backup/ROM Manager, I guess the phone downloaded the ME7 update in the background and I told it to install (stupid me). This will teach me from rushing to get my phone back to the state it was in. (Not that I can do that now because I need SuperSU before I can install ROM Manager). Hopefully once I can get ROM Manager back, I can restore my MDK backup with all my custom settings and apps. I think I will make a visit to the VZ store tomorrow and see if they can revert back to the MDK version. I will make up some lame excuse of why I don't want to be on this new release.
This leads to my question of, is there a way to disable or remove the apk file that controls the software updates?
Thanks again for saving my life!!!
Once you take me7 update theres no going back unless you get a different phone. When someone gets the me7 ota rooted you can rename/remove sdm.apk and itll keep your phone from downloading new updates. I would say freeze as well but some users reported their phones updating even with it froze. When the me7 bootloader/recovery situation gets resolved there wont be much reason to go back to mdk anyway since people will start creating roms with it as the base.

Thanks for the information about the sdm.apk. When I debloated my phone I used the adb shell to remove most of the *.apk packages that I did not want. This was of course after I took a full Titanium Backup and ROM Backup.
Sounds good and I will not waste my time going to Verizon today.
You make a really good point about not going back to the mdk, but rather move forward with the technology and updates. This leads me to some more questions once I have root again:
1. Is my mdk rom backup totally useless at this point?
2. If yes to 1, since my mdk rom contained all my apps/customized settings, do I have to manually download everything and reconfigure?
3. If no to 2, how would I go about getting the app/customized settings back, Titanium Backup?
4. If yes to 2, if I go about downloading everything manually and configuring, will the new root remove all these settings?
I am sure I will have more questions so thanks in advanced
PS: I think I figured out what caused my USB port to stop working. I take my phone with me when I run so I think some sweat got in from my arm band and corroded the connections. I tried cleaning them with rubbing alcohol and compressed air, but still no dice. If connected to a computer or wall charger, it will charge, but a computer will not detected it. So my guess is there is damage to the board allowing whatever communication is needed to work with a computer.
I have the Verizon LG G3 with build 12b installed (Was updated by the store when I purchased phone). Is there anyway to unlock the boot loader and root the device as is, or roll the device back to a previous build that is easily unlockable/rootable?
You should have posted in the q&a forum area.
Anyhow - if you want to root, and install a custom recovery (twrp), use the kdz method to get back to 10b:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56484240
Then from this forum area install the bump/twrp from autoprime, and make sure to either freeze system updates or rename the two LGDMSClient files in /system/app. The freeze or rename is so new ota don't get pushed onto your phone after you get the custom recovery (twrp). Otherwise you'll needed the solution in the "stuck in custom recovery" thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56061720
(It is handy to download the "stuck" zip onto your phone as a just-in-case. If you do get an ota, and your phone keeps booting to recovery, tell twrp to Install the zip to clear the ota files )
HTH!
I am trying that method now (actually before you replied) but the kdz file is taking for ever to download. Been running for 30 minutes and still showing 7 hours remaining. I have a really fast internet connection but that one file doesn't wanna download!

I think I am in love with you, JK.....seriously though thanks a bunch....downloading the Mega link now and it seems to be going MUCH faster.
Did it work for you? I tried to downgrade, when phone said 100% it rebooted. I had a dark screen.... Went to the Verizon store, was told it was hard bricked. Haven't tried rooting my replacement yet.
Early adopter, got my phone in July, used the original ioroot, never had to revert.
The kdz method has had quite a few people who succeeded, based on what I read, no idea why it went bad for you. If you are gun shy, understandable, post 2 of annoying duck's thread has a link for the tot approach, supposed to be a slightly more pita way but not too exotic. Key is to flash any existing g3 drivers on your PC, install the proper things used by the tot method.

I did the kdz method. Omg you run the program and it starts don't click on any notifications, just let it run. Sorry about the late response.
I just got the S4 for Verizon prepaid. It came pre-installed with lollipop 5.0.1. I do enjoy tinkering and getting the most out of android, even if making the best of it beings verizon loves to lock stuff up. So before I start any tweaking, I don't want to end up with a soft brick so I want to be cautious and have something to fall back on which would be the firmware I can load back into the phone via Odin. So if anything bad cones I'm covered. No idea how many times the firmware for my prepaid s3 saved my phone lol. So it is needed but unfortunately prepaid firmware seems harder to get.
The firmware or build im exactly after is...i545ppvruaoh7 with kernel September 7 2015. (Not sure if that part matters) any help is appreciated. I seem to have posted this in the wrong section before. I was told to post here but if I'm wrong to post in this section then let me know. Thanks
Still no help?
I'm kinda in the same boat with a Verizon prepaid i545ppvruaoh7. I tried a few ways to root (downgrade to OC1 etc..) but wasn't able to get root until I used Kingroot. Now I am rooted, uninstalled Kingroot and installed Supersu. Root is working still but my Camera isn't working, my wifi passwords won't stick after reboot, and I get a security notification every few minutes. Seems like I need to be back on my original Kernel, which I didn't make a backup of to make everything OK again. Firmware for our I545ppvruaoh7 would fix my problems.
Sorry this doesn't help you @bjf189, but if I can find the firmware I will reply back to here.

I have a few firmware sites bookmarked. Some have firmware for the prepaid s3 so I'm hoping in time they will have the s4 firmware as well. I don't understand why you had to downgrade your kernel though. I'm not real fond of how kernels work but I left it all alone. Didn't downgrade anything. Used king root to root. It said it wouldn't root but still I continued and it rooted. I removed all bloatware and adjusted a few things with pimp my rom. That's about it. I wanted to install safestrap but I see warnings that it don't work on 5.0 lollipop. So I'm avoiding that until firmware is released cause I'm not using that app flashfire being you have to be able to boot into system to use the app to do anything. Just to risky for me. As for your Wi-Fi problems I'm betting it's your kernel. Being the firmware is different, the kernel your looking for or suppose to have for the firmware isn't out yet. I'd give you my stock kernel that came with mine but not sure how you could flash a raw dump
I was able to reinstall my firmware for our i545ppvruaoh7 (with kernel September 7 2015) by using KIES. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/app/kies
My phone is now exactly like it was when I un-boxed it. No root but everything is working again!

[/COLOR]I have exactly this same phone and exactly the same issues. I went to the OC1 firmware via Odin a couple times fooling around. Got Rooted. But Charger and Camera went Adios.
Recovery is simple. Inside your Phone in a hidden Partition. It is the Verizon Diagnostic Utilities. When you first plug your phone into a USB you will see the 4 or 5 files.
Run the Application. It will install into your PC. Then with a good internet connection. Run the "Repair" module. It has a nice backup feature. Presto in 45 minutes your back
to "Bone Stock". Root is gone but your fully recovered.
OK now the good news. You want root on your PP version of the Verizon S4. Its available NOW. It can be done with a little skill
1. Download the King Root apk. build 4.8 10523. It's dated 2/4/2016. At first it sez not available for root. Then hit the try anyway. Download Root Checker. Confirm Root.
2. Get the King SU Un- installed. Go Here. http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html
3. Download ES File Explorer, Terminal Emulator, and the enclosed Patch on the link above.
4. Follow the directions on the link.
5. You need to Unzip the Patch from wolfdroid into the correct directory. /sdcard/mrw/. Use ES File explorer for that
6. Run the emulator. Type SU to get to the root.
7. Then run the Patch/ batch command. sh /sdcard/mrw/root.sh
That will clean up the KingrootSU and some of the garbage files it leaves behind.
The Super SU will work and you can de-install anything KingRoot still on your phone at this point.
I have loaded Titanium and frozen my Bloat. Loaded my apps with Link2D so I can put them on my sd card. You need to Partition your SD drive correctly.
Using it for a few days now and its flawless. Everything works. Nice speed and full root. No ROM attempts yet. I will back it all up and try in a few weeks.
But have no fear. Your S4 PP Verizon OH7 is recoverable from the process above. No KNOX trip either.

I've known this but thanks for the tip. I already rooted using that method. I can't rely on that tool to fix a possible screw up. I messed something up on my s3 when I had it. Tried that same tool and it wouldn't go past 51% it kept crashing. So I'm not looking for any other method then the firmware to use in Odin but still thanks guys

I have the Verizon S4 used the forum for
Wander share on PC downgraded kernel to oc1 to root and flashed of1 using Odin 3.07 the kernel flash took care of the security warning . Then I downloaded Stanglte non mdk oc1 of rom plus WiFi fix and beta super user zips kladhed with flash fire and I'm cooking however this is the only firm ware I have found working .
I'm still having no luck finding the oh7 firmware :/
Question. Why do you need the Firmware ? I have a Request in for it with SamMobil. Just to have the file. It will come in time. I reset my PP version with the Internal tool that's on the Hidden partition on your phone. You will see it when you first plug in the phone via usb and look at windows file explorer. It will time out after a minute or so then show you the contents in your phones file system.. Yes USB Debugging must be on. That will program when loaded on your PC will reload the original Firmware File completely. Phone will be BONE STOCK. I used it 4 times on my phone. Are you just attempting to root ? Mine sure is working good rooted. Camera, Network, Everything perfectly and I am rooted via Kingroot. Going back to OC1 will not work with this Variant. The reason the program would hang is PC or Network related. I am a windows Expert. Nothing wrong with that program. It will pick up where it left off too. Its very well written.

Sorry for the late reply. I never got an email saying you replied. I was just letting time pass and check time to time for the firmware. Anyways, I need the firmware as a safe resort. I'm also rooted with king root. King root does wonders lol. I refuse to do any modding or tinkering until I have the firmware cause if anything goes wrong, and I don't have the firmware then it's a higher chance of my phone not working and thus service days wasted. After getting the firmware, I'm looking to deodex and get xposed to work but before taking any of those steps, I wanna play it safe and cautious. Just cause it works for others, don't mean it's 100% to work for me. So that's why it's important for me to get the firmware for this phone. So as soon as sammobile releases that firmware to you or the public, can you link it on here for me? I'd greatly appreciate it
any one have any info on the firmware as of yet?

im glad others can have the tools from Verizon to fall back on but i dont feel entirely safe about tinkering until i have that firmware. i had the S3 on prepaid and postpaid and prepaid had different firmwares so if anything is mistaked in between, im screwed. im looking at deodexing my stock rom after getting the firmware though so i can run xposed. im assuming im going to need to deodex it myself some way beings everyone who deodexed it before was on postpaid firmware. i just wish that sammobile would release it more quickly so i can start customizing and such. ive tried other prepaid firmware sites as well and put in requests for the specific firmware but not any replies on that as of yet. i do appreciate that you are keeping me up to date. thank you.
Any firmware come up yet for this? I've got nothing
Still looking?
I recently just go the phone as well and was successfully rooted with King. Every forum I found allows Custom Rom on the older variants of this model but not the PP, any luck yet?
