Contacts app creating multiple copies of all the contacts after ICS update - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

It looks like every time my phone syncs with each of my accounts, it is bringing all the contacts again as new contacts rather than syncing them with the existing ones. This is very annoying because every time I go to my contacts application the same contact is repeated several times.
I tried recreating the accounts (deleting all the contacts and syncing them again) but no matter what I do, within a few minutes I start seeing the multiple copies of all the contacts again...
Does anyone know how to stop the madness?
Thanks in advance!

go into your gmail on a pc and merge all duplicate contacts, that should do it, had that issue a long time ago.

The problem is not duplicate contacts. Say I have one contact on my gmail account named John Doe. There is only one John Doe in my gmail acocunt, however on my phone, with time, there will be several John Does, and while it creates multiple copies of John Doe on the phone, there will only be one John Doe on my gmail account.
Makes better sense now?

Uncheck sync contacts. If you leave it checked every time it syncs up it creates duplicates. After you uncheck sync contacts go to you contacts and delete all the dulpicates then export your contacts to you SD card. Its frustrating it kept happening to me till I used this method. I no longer use Google to sync my contacts for me.

but syncing the contacts is part of the whole point of having a smartphone. if i add a contact on the phone, i want it to sycn to my other web services, be it google or my company's exchange server or my hotmail account. and if i add a contact on any of those accounts, i want it on my phone the next time i use it.
syncing works perfectly on other platforms and it was working well on the Note until ICS, at least for me.
and don't get me started on not being able to merge more than 5 contacts on the phone, if you have gmail, hotmail, exchange, facebook, linked in, google+, tango, and more (i do) and if a contact is on all of those services then you can only merge 5 and the rest appear as a separate contact on the address book... #$^%$#^... i know that windows phone merges all the contacts from all the services for you...
so, no. stopping sync should not be the solution, although i recognize that it would stop creating duplicates on my phone, it would defeat the purpose of having a smart phone, at least for me...
thanks for your suggestion, though. i appreciate it.

Sounds like have your contacts saved not just thru Google but on the phone itself. Also u can filter to show just Google contacts. I only sync with Google so I never had this but seen it with ppl

No contacts on the phone. Also each of my accounts have its own contacts. I don't want to put my work contacts in my google account, because those live in active directory and are synchronized with my outlook on my PC, and on the company's citric servers through exchange...
I'm beginning to think that I'm switching to windows phone 8 when it comes out. This never happened to me on WP7, or on the old windows mobile...

yes i do, but that's what combining contacts is supposed to be for. too bad touchwiz only lets you combine five of them...

Well just out of curiosity what would happen if you signed out of the non-google account and rebooted? Would the duplicate contacts be gone?

merging the duplicates should solve the problem, also make sure you dont have facebook, sim card, phone and google all syncing. if you have numbers on all those accounts it will cause duplicates

you can only merge 5 contacts. and the problem is that the contacts start duplicating themselves...
i had to disable contacts from all my accounts and sync only the google contacts, and i'm really upset because i should be able to use the contacts from all my services, which used to work fine before ICS and works fine on windows phone 8

I've had almost the exact issue with my contacts and I only sync my google contacts. Drove me crazy, everytime I flashed an ics rom it did it but I think I finally fixed it. I went into contact settings and checked "show contacts with numbers only" and all the other contacts went away.

i don't only store numbers in my contacts, i also store addresses and emails, so i want to see them all...

The same over here...
It happens the same to me, I was thinking that may be an issue asosiated to flashing rom with out wipe... I'm going to try to do a full wipe and reinstall all over again, but it's just anoying because it only repeat contacts on the phone and no in my google or exchange accounts. And believe me it's not a merging problem... it's something else...

Galaxy S3 too
I also have this problem on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I had it once where it duplicated contacts once, but I deleted them all and started over and my contacts all linked up nicely with the contacts I have in Skype and WhatsApp. However, since last week it is misbehaving. I have deleted the contacts on my phone and let them sync again, but some time later they duplicate. How it manages to link to Skype and WhatsApp contacts is also varies. Sometimes just a couple link automatically - and not the same name each time. Right now I have 7 contacts for each name and 7 entries in the calendar for each appointment. I sync contacts to Skype, WhatsApp and Microsoft Exchange only, nothing to Facebook, Gmail etc. If I delete 1 entry (out of 7) on the phone then my 1 entry in Outlook goes.
Sorry I don't have a solution to offer yet, but I will keep trying. My feeling is that is has something to do with Kies but I have not figured out what yet (and probably Microsoft Exchange Server, but that is unavailable for most of us to test...). Things seemed to get worse after installing the latest Android update (4.04) that was pushed out last week.

I only used Kies to install the ICS update. All my accounts are setup as exchange accounts. I have one warning, though. One of the things I tried was I went to each account and told it not to sync the contacts, then I went to the contacts app and deleted all the contacts and then I reenabled sync on my accounts to redownload the contacts and the result was that all of the contacts from one of my exchange accounts were gone. I was able to prevent further disaster because first I had backed up my contacts on my PC, and because when I reenabled sync, the phone warned me that I was deleting too many contacts and let me cancel the deletion (I had to restart the phone because it kept warning me and stopping the deletion wouldn't work)...
I had to end up deleting all my accounts and recreating them, Importing all the contacts from my other accounts to my gmail account and only syncing my contacts with my gmail, Which sucks, but I guess there is no other way for now...
I'm strongly thinking about going to windows phone 8 when it comes out just because of this issue...

Today, I have 7 copies of each of my contacts... and I have almost 700 contacts, so I can't try anything that include a one by one solution. My exchange account doesn't seem to duplicate (or more) my contacts on the server. Also the battery was almost gone by noon... there must be something wrong on the room that Keeps syncing duplicating contacts

Sync With Google

Google Sync is a free service that allows you to sync your contacts, email and calendar with your gmail account.
It is a two-way sync, meaning that if you add an appointment or contact to your phone, it will upload to Google's cloud and update your gmail information as well.
I use Google Sync to keep my contacts in the cloud, vs using myPhone since I have multiple phones but only one Windows Live account. If you have ever synced two phones to myPhone under one account, you'll see right away why this is a bad thing.
One of my favorite benefits from using Google Sync is the fact that it not only stores my phone contacts, it also stores their facebook links and contact pictures as well. This means that I can freely flash another ROM without worrying about backing up all of my contacts to SIM or myPhone and then manually updating all of the information for them.
The best part of Google Sync has to be the push email service. As emails arrive (assuming you have set the account up correctly), they will be pushed to your phone via ActiveSync. You don't have to be at your computer for this, it's done over the air.
The only think Google Sync can't do is sync Tasks. If you choose Tasks during the setup, you will receive a cryptic error.
Now that I've told you about the benefits of Google Sync, let's go over how to use it. This assumes you have an existing gmail account. I don't know how to sync with Google without a gmail account, sorry.
I always add my hotmail account first. For some strange reason you can never go back and edit the settings for the first mail account you setup on Windows Mobile, so I use my hotmail account for this.
Steps:
Select your Mail tab and hit the Menu button
Choose "Add Account"
Under "Choose a Mail Provider", select "Outlook" (Don't select Gmail!)
Put your entire gmail address ([email protected]) in the "Email address" box, followed by your password.
Select "Next"
Under "User name" put your email address ([email protected]) again.
The Password field should be filled in, if not just put it in again.
Scroll down.
Leave "Domain" blank.
Scroll down.
Leave "Save password" checked.
Under "Server address" put m.google.com
Leave "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" checked.
Select "Next"
If all options are selected, deselect Tasks (Very Important!)
If not, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar
Hit Advanced Settings
Peak time and Non-peak time (I have "As items arrive" on both here) sets how often your emails are pushed to your phone.
I have nationwide coverage, so I also select "Sync data when roaming".
Hit "Done"
Hit "Done" again.
The phone will now connect to the Google Sync server and begin updating your contacts, calendar appointments and email. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of contacts and such. If you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, they should now appear on your phone in short order. You may choose "Send/Receive" from the mail Menu if you think it is taking too long.
You will now be able to receive your email sent to your gmail account as soon as it arrives. I have also forwarded my email from my other accounts to my gmail account, but this may be too much for you.
I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have the "Smart Phone" plan (so-called "Unlimited Data Plan"), as it will eat up your bandwith quickly. It may also have a detrimental effect on your battery, due to the fact that it requires a constant data and Active Sync connection to work properly.
If you are concerned about your battery, you can try changing the Peak and Non-peak options under "Advanced" to longer intervals. If it makes a big difference in the life of your battery, I would love to hear about it here!
You can view the original Google Sync video and tutorial links here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
Hopefully this will be of use to someone out there! Please let me know if you use Google Sync or if you have trouble following my directions.
---Issue With Labels/Folders---
If you have set gmail to tag messages with labels as they come in, you may not be able to read the messages on your phone. XDA-DEV user pantyshot has managed a workaround and posted it here. Be sure to thank pantyshot for the fix if you find it handy!
Also, newer versions of Outlook Mobile (any available as a cab install so that people don't have to use a custom rom?) support sorting messages by subject. Pretty darn close to the threaded messages in the orgasmic Android Gmail app.
I've been doing this since I got the phone, but it is nice to see someone write up the details.
Nice thx man. I didnt even know this was possible on WM coming from a Nexus. I synced my phonebook with MS outlook but nice to know this is possible.
This should be a sticky!!!
Thanks... nice sticky note.
On Friday, I bought an HD2 to replace my Nexus One (which I gave to my daughter). The N1 & Android are just fine but I wanted to play with the HD2 and WinMo. Not too worried about the lack of support for WinMo 7 as I am certain that we will find versions we can use thanks to XDA.
Ok, back on-topic... I was using Google Sync to get my messages from Gmail to my Nexus One. I now know how to do this with WinMo 6.5. I will address this when I get back home as I am on a business trip in Amman, Jordan and I don't want to rake-up astronomical data roaming charges while over here.
this is helpful for newbies/ beginners..
Anyway I had done set up the gmail as "PRIMARY" account only when i got HD2. why i need hotmail set up as primary account then add gmail? I just curious..
I've been using this method as well, but has anyone noticed that you cannot sync your labels from gmail? Is it just me or Outlook just syncs the inbox aside from contacts and calendar?
The only glitch I have seen with using google sync is that when you import your contacts from google, they get sorted as Last Name, First Name. (Doe, John.)I have always liked seeing my contact list as first name last name. (John Doe.) If you manually try to switch this in your contact list, it gets over written once google syncs again. Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
This method is GREAT. Big thanks to OP

I'm not sure why, but whenever you add a new email account to Windows Mobile and attempt to go back and edit it, the first account you added will always be grayed out. This means you can't modify, or even delete the first account.
Since you may decide you want to change how often you check your gmail, I thought you might want to add a hotmail account (Windows Live) first, since those settings are automatic and can't be changed anyway.
I've always had to do a hardreset in the past to get rid of bad gmail settings, so I learned to always put hotmail first.
Hope that helps

I know, this is annoying. I have added two new contacts and both of them were sorted like this.
You can try deleting the "Last Name" field in your phone contacts, then add the last name beside the first name, but I haven't actually tried that.

When I used the official Gmail App, it represented labels as folders. Because Google doesn't actually have different folders (just different flags for each message), I don't know of any way to split the messages by folder.
As a matter of fact, I don't think you can do this with regular folders via Outlook, due to the way the built-in email client works.
If anyone knows a fix to this please post; we would all like to separate our messages by folders if possible!

You can try this app I have called Contact Changer. Just install to phone, hit the change button and soft reset. After that they should display correctly, and it's actually WinMo that displays contacts like that b/c I have mine sync'd through Microsoft Myphone (b/c gmail messes up the contact pics) and they display the same way.
Now once you run the app, if you add a contact or delete a contact it will revert to last name first. Just run the Contact Changer and reboot again and you will be golden.

Funny you mention that.
I actually used the built-in option to link my favorite contacts to their respective facebook account in my friends list. This changed the contact picture from the camera image I had to their facebook avatar. When next I flashed my phone, Google loaded the contacts back with the facebook linke and facebook avatar, which was very surprising to me.
Does myPhone do the same thing if you use them to keep track of your contacts?

Not sure what you posted this link in reference to. Unless you are confusing Google Sync with ActiveSync...
ActiveSync is the method of connecting your phone directly to your PC, for file transfers, updating your ROM image and standard backups. It is also the name of the protocol that the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to sync data between the Server and ActiveSync-enabled devices.
Google Sync is a free Microsoft Exchange Server that allows "push" email via your phone's data connection. You don't have to be near a PC to sync your calendar, contacts or gmail.
I think the threaded e-mail conversations are only available in the WM 6.5.x versions of WinMo. I am also unable to sync my other folders (Sent, Saved) from Gmail. I have them checked off as well in the Manage Folders option, but nothing appears in these folders after syncing. I think the only possible folder to sync is Inbox.

Are you sure they are actually folders? I thought gmail only has labels that appear as folders in the native clients.
Also, this is the same as most Outlook syncs; it will only give you the unread messages. There may be a setting in gmail that will allow you to retrieve old messages, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that on a mobile phone.
If you want to just get your emails, you can use the "Gmail" option when setting up your new email account on the HD2. This won't "push" like the "Outlook" option will, but you can still set it to manually check as often as every 5 minutes if you can spare the battery life.
Of course, you would be much better off getting the official gmail client for that, since that will also support your lables-as-folders option.
Myself, I prefer to use Google Sync and let that push emails to my phone as well as syncing all of my gmail and phone contacts. I don't use labels any more and don't want all the "Sent" or "Archived" messages to clutter up my phone.
Yea, you're probably right about the labeling/folder issue. I just want to see a saved e-mail to look some thing up at times, but maybe I'll just log onto gmail.com for that on my phone. Is there any Gmail client available for WinMo phones? I haven't seen any. Also, does push kill battery life? (ex. sync every 5 minutes) Or is it a more sophisticated syncing method that will only connect to data when new messages arrive?

[Q] Local phone android contacts with ICS?

Hi everyone,
I'm using CM9, but I tried different ICS roms and I encounter this problem with all of them.
- I'm trying to add a local phone (non gmail) contact to my phone, but it doesn't let me do that. When I add a new contact, a message box pops up saying, that: "Your new contact will be synchronized with <my gmail account>". How to add a local phone (not a SIM card) number?
- I have a backup of all my local phone numbers from GB made with MyPhoneExplorer, and restoring it works when I'm on ICS. The contacts are shown as local phone contacts (PCSC). However, after restarting the phone and waiting a few minutes, all the local contacts are completely gone. MyPhoneExplorer confirms that there are no contacts in the phone either. What's going on?
I really do not want to sync my contacts with google. Looking forward to hearing some answers!
Cheers!
I use CM9-alpha4 (i9001) and it works for me.
I did completely turn of "accounts and sync" and I also didn't flash gapps.
When I first created a new contact I was notified that it will be local and not synced. No problem there.
I'm using the CM9 9-20120614 version (the newest beta). I have Accounts and Sync on, since I want some stuff synced with my phone (facebook, linkedin, gmail calendar, etc.). And I experience the beforementioned problems...
I fiddled with the options but found nothing that would allow me to store my contacts locally and prevent the existing ones from being deleted
There is an issue in the Bugtracker:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=26834
You could also use some other account that doesn't sync with Google. Funambol[0] would be my choice.
[0] http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.funambol.androidsync
Thanks for that link.
However, I'm not sure, how is that cloud solution about to help storing my contacts locally without sharing it with any 3rd party?
You have to assiciate your contacts with some account. The funambol client creates such a "account provider" for you. But I just tried it and it seems like the client always wants you to sync with some server. You could set up your own server but that might not be what you want.
Sorry I can't really help. There is another thread about this:

Thanks! I will test it soon, although I have already moved my contacts to Google's cloud. Also, will this fix prevent me from synching google contacts? If so, it's more of a workaround than fix.
It breaks contact syncing deliberately. If you want to keep that while enabling local storage of contacts you need to edit the contacts.apk . I initially decompiled it and identified the line of code that enables or disables the local option.

Contacts "sync is currently experiencing problems"

I'm trying to sync my Google contacts but always get the message: "sync is currently experiencing problems". A reboot doesn't help. I even reflashe the ROM (Checkrom 3.5) and that didn't help either. Can anyone suggest a fix?
I’ve just noticed that I’m also unable to sync contacts with my Samsung Account, so I’m guessing that the problem is on the phone rather than the server….
The issue seems to be related to the Go Contacts app. I found that if I deleted then re-added the Google account from my phone I could sync again, but as soon as I added a new contact in Go Contacts I got this error message again. If I add the contact using the stock Contacts app I don’t get the problem. Has anyone else had this issue with Go Contacts?
Solved! (and I'm pretty sure it's for good this time)
So, I've been getting this problem for a while, I've called Google (It's a problem with the OS but Samsung should fix it), and Samsung(It's a problem with the OS but Google should fix it).......... I finally spotted someone alluding to an issue syncing groups in a previous post and someone here mentioned go contacts having issues so here's the process I followed to finally have it working again:
- If you use 'go contacts', use it to back up your contacts to a vcf which you can then import in to google
- Email that file to yourself as backup
- Turn off contact sync under your google account on your phone
- Go to manage applications and open the 'contacts database' app and clear all data.
- Do the same for 'go contacts' and the stock 'contacts' app
- Uninstall 'go contacts' (Probably not necessary but i wanted to start fresh)
- Open Gmail and go to 'contacts'. If you're confident that everything is in your phone's VCF, delete everything from your contacts.
- Import the vcf file in to google contacts.
- Here's the important bit: Delete ALL groups from your google contacts.
- Find and merge duplicates and make sure your contacts are all there. (I found that not all contacts were imported from the .vcf file)
- Install 'go contacts'
- Go to 'groups' and delete ALL groups from the 'go contacts' app.
- Turn on contacts account sync again.
I did this 2 days ago and (fingers crossed) my contact sync is working again.

I did this 2 days ago and (fingers crossed) my contact sync is working again.

What if you're confident that both your phone's VCF and Google Contacts have new information? As a matter of fact, it's the case with me. I create new contacts with my phone for a newly received phone number, and I create new contacts with Gmail for a newly received email address. So, I simply can't just delete one set and replace it with the other. Any suggestions?
(Conceivably, I can import the phone's VCF to Google, and rely on Google's "Merge Contacts" function, but I'm a little reluctant because I don't exactly know what kind of algorithm Google uses to get rid of duplicates.)
This Contact sync issue seems to be affecting a lot of Android is users and has been a big disappointment for me. One more reason for me to marvel at iOS's seamless syncing.
Worked for me
Thanks a lot beirtipol...problem solved

Google sync issues

I was having the same issue and searched everywhere to find help. Came a cross a post (somewhere else... can't remember where) that said other apps could be affecting it. Thinking back to the most recent apps I have installed, and when the sync issue started, I deleted data and uninstalled Skype and my sync is working fine now.
Hope this helps.
I have finally found a 'reasonably simple' solution that came from suggestions in this thread
1. I have Go Contacts EX installed so I exported a copy of my contacts to a VCF on my SDcard.
2. Email VCF file to my Gmail account
3. Open Gmail on Web Browser on PC
4. Open the email - attachment is shown and Google gives a nice link to say "import contacts" based on the VCF
5. Press the link to import (assuming import and choose file will do same)
6. It may crash... but it has imported the contacts into a new group and may leave loads of duplicates...
7. Choose to "find and merge duplicates" (may need a few manual merges for those it does not catch)
8. Select all contacts and select to remove the "imported..." group that was created (if it crashed for you too)
Now you are left with Phone and Gmail that agree so sync works again.
Next time you edit a contact on your phone it may well stop working again - so do this now and again to keep in sync until everyone stops blaming each other for the issue...
Im still having issues with this...very annoying.

I am having exact same issue however the device is Note II. I never had this issue with my 2+ years of Android usage (Motorola, Sony & HTC phones). This has started with Samsung Note II only. I have posted the same question in Note 2 section however did not get any reply so I am assuming that it is just me who is facing the issue . I don't have Go contacts. It is really annoying as it contacts are completely gone from phone. Any suggestions?
contacts doesn't sync
I believe it is not the hardware = Samsung,
it is not the OS, Im running Padawan 6.2 custom ROM
this was a problem years ago when I switch to gmail and the problems arrived how to translate and auto-sort the first name/last/name/title/address/phone number/and so on , from one platform to other
I am surprised how google (since they support the android) didn't standardized this in its own backyard....
i.e. uninstalled and installed back EX Contacts, cleared the data and still not synking, now when I need it, and not tomorow.
so, the workaround:
clear data in Contacts Storage (! will wipe what you had in the phone !), and sync it backwards, from google to phone, so whenever you got new email contact its there anyway, and type there the new phone numbers ....
the stock address book updates well.......
I agree the stock address book looks cheap, but whatever I do with it, updates google address book....
I believe something to do with rows and columns how one is trying to send but the google doesn't know how to autosort, this why even when you import need to do manual work
just my 2c
Update:
- I remove Google account from phone
- Via web -> Gmail -> Contacts, I removed all groups, merge duplicates. etc and synced
It worked fine for 2 days and same issue occurred again. I am so much frustrated with Note 2. I never had this issues with any of my earlier phone. Now my phone is with service center as they want to keep it for 2-3 days, use and observe.

I had the same problem with my att skyrocket running Embryo 5.4
I fixed the problem by downloading 'contacts sync fix' from google play store for free
I had the same problem with my AT&T Galaxy S3, after reading this post someone suggested that Skype was affecting this. I removed Skype and now Samsung account can sync.
This worked for me:

I have the Note II and had this problem too, I also had GoContacts EX and cleaned up, merged etc a lot of contacts. None of these suggestions worked for me to get sync working. Here's what I did: Backed up all contacts on phone. Removed all groups from phone and Google on my browser (not sure if this needed to be done but was suggested above. You probably won't need to I'm guessing.) (Exported VCF to my SD Card). Then emailed them to my gmail account, imported into my account using Gmail on my computer browser. Waited for it and after a while gmail asked if I wanted to merge. I said yes, then I deleted the group that Google automatically created for the imported contacts and the date they were imported. I also uninstalled Go contacts EX just to be safe.
After this I deleted my Google account off of my phone. Note that I have 2 gmail accounts, so my phone then switched to using the other gmail account. Then I added the normal account back to my phone and it synced fine after that. But I don't know how long it will work as I just did it a short while ago. Hopefully this helps someone though, because I know how frustrating this issue is. If you don't have two Gmail accounts I suppose you could create one temporarily just for this purpose. Good luck.
sgs3 with same issue - remove / re-add account worked for me
i have the sprint sgs3 with android 4.1 (jelly bean) and i had the same problem (sync is currently experiencing problems) until today. my contacts had not sync'd for over a month. no clue why. based on recommendations in this forum:
i disabled other applications (i.e. skype, facebook, yahoo, etc.) contact sync... no change.
i uninstalled skype... no change.
hence, i don't believe there is any need to do the above. what worked for me is...
i went to my pc's google contacts and exported my contacts to make sure that i had them saved off. then, i went to settings, google -> <my google account>, remove account, yes / ok, add account, add google account, etc. while attempting to sync contacts a window popped up asking me to update, i selected now, it rebooted / updated. again, a window popped up asking me to update, i selected now, it rebooted / updated. when it came back up, i verified that google contacts sync'd. the android version now reads 4.1.2.
i re-installed skype, re-enabled other applications contact sync... google contacts still sync. good luck!
I have the Note II and am running CleanRom. Had not issues for a while, then this started to happen. Last sync with contacts was on /2/27/2013 at 7:35pm (today for those lazy to look at post date is 3/1/2013 8:08am).
When this happens, my contacts disappear from my contact button. Today however if I switched the Contacts to Display from my gmail account to All Contacts they are back, but this isn't always the case.
If I reboot its all good, but will come back either later that day, at night, or the next day.
I have deleted the data from Contact Database and Contacts, but all that did was make me have to set the ringtones back up for the people.
Tried the Contact Sync Fix from the Play Store, no go.

If I tap on it, it shows me that it's somehow connected to Whatsapp:
Why are those entries not linked to the regular contact?
I have this problem with every ROM i use....
I can't delete those entries but the phone tells me that they will be hidden instead. Is there an easy way to fix that instead of trying to delete every single contact?
Thank you in advance.

Anyone? Can't imagine I'm the only one with that problem?

Nope, your not. I just rebooted my G3 and now I have these as well... Mine seem to be linked to outlook though (I don't have what'sapp). Im still using unrooted stock. Im not downloading something else to hide/delete these, that's going on? Why'd this happen and how do I prevent it from recurring? Thanks
This is most likely due to the same issue as Facebook contacts. As whatsapp is owned by Facebook and Google removed all code to sync Facebook contacts natively.
Simple solution
I had the same problem, although I haven't established which one was the offending app, I disabled contact sync for:
Microsoft Exchange
Whassap
Skype
Viber
Linkedin
Sync only with google and it works fine.
Someone ought to figure out which apps are the offending ones and let us know.

My guess would be it's ms exchange as that would over ride the default.
Can't say anything about whatsapp, everyone I know stopped using it years ago.
Also don't use Viper nor does anyone I know.
Linked in works fine for me.
Unknown Name MSactivesync. Outlook and Note 5 400 unk names
Always had good luck synch contacts to Putlook even after they changed this to all exchange vs that hotmail patch thing on the desktop.** My Note 4 crashed so got a temp LG prepaid, which sinked fine, then got a Note 5...yuk...but anyway.* I got 100 contacts 400 of which dont exist on the desktop outlook but show as unknown name.* They say they are from Microsoft Active Account Synch.
The only account I have or want for contacts* is Outlook via the exchange.* Email works great.* I dont like gmail or its contacts especially on desktop.* Im outlook guy.* I dont have skype whatsapp etc.* So google is only sych chrome and gmail as i need* a gmail and google for android.* I like chrome btw.* All the unknows coming from active synch outlook.*
If i add a contact in outlook it comes accross fine.* But where are tye others from? How do I stop it . Samsung support on ph has no idea...in best buy i usually know more than them and verizon is getting less tech knowledgeable by the month.*
Some hints...the unknown names do not show up on the LG phone, which that ph is a prepaid # i bought to use the ph temp on my vz contract number until I got the Note 5 warranty replacement.* The Lg is synched same way and it picks up contacts i added but no unknown names.* So why would the issue be specific to note 5? I checked all the settings and I can't find anything that is importing strange contacts to the Note 5. And the thing is it's saying it's from Microsoft so somewhere if getting unknown name from Microsoft for creating them for some reason.
Another hint. And these may not be related. When I delete these unknown names from my phone I notice some of them anyway show up in my deleted folder in my mailbox on the desktop in Outlook. They don't say unknown names they just have a timestamp for about the time I delete the unknown name for my note 5. They also look like mail folders instead of contacts. But I have never had this until I started deleting these unknown names. You probably know but in outlook the contacts are there and when you delete them they go into the deleted items folder for the email account the contacts are in.
I deleted suggested contacts and case that's confusing something in Outlook.
One more thing is it on my LG they're all of the sudden have been some random contacts show up for people whose names I don't know. It doesn't look like it is hacked. Some of them might be people and email before and there was an online dating site that I use that I have emailed from Outlook and then at one point I imported contacts to Gmail and then deleted them but some of these email showed up in the LG contact list under the Google account which is my gmail.* That is to say that when I look at the contact to see what it's linked to it says it's from Google not Microsoft or anything else. When I go to the desktop for Gmail there are no contacts like this in there. In fact there are no contacts. I deleted the groups that cat contacts but work in my contact list. So if you go into contacts on the desktop for Gmail you can select groups as opposed to all contacts and there what's my imports in there. But these contacts have shown up since I deleted all of that and I have no idea where they came from
So I have been using contacts syncing with my email for ever since I can remember having a smartphone back when I think there was an S3 or something period suddenly now all of this craziness and I have activated 4 different Note 4's because they were all junk on the touch screen or would freeze up and then before that I had a Note 3 and I have a Galaxy S5 and so on and have never had any problems like this and in fact I got so fast switching information over the phone I could do all of my apps all of my settings including pesky ones like opening an app for Facebook and Google search removing those I could do that in about 30 minutes or less. So I have no idea what's going on. Sorry this is so long but I have searched and searched and no one describes this problem exactly like me they all talk about it being associated with another app besides Microsoft Exchange Server and all the people use Gmail and wanted that to work instead of Outlook. So hopefully someone can help.
---------- Post added at 11:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 PM ----------
So I found the source of the contacts in my LG phone that have never been there before until this phone. For whatever reason perhaps the new Android I don't know but not only did it import groups that I had to delete from the web version of Gmail in contacts but there is something called "other contacts."
If you go into Gmail I don't know where to find the contacts so I have to search Google contacts from Google and then it loads my contacts. I checked all the contact lists which were empty except for when I clicked other contacts it said that that version of the page did not support other contacts. This page on the phone looks different than the one on the desktop .
I clicked on the link on the page that said "go to old version of other contacts." And there I found all the contacts that Were Somehow showing up on to my contact list on my LG.
The weird thing about it is that I have syncing to contacts for. Google unchecked under accounts. So in addition to the problem of of with the unknown name for Microsoft Outlook Exchange ActiveSync or whatever it's called now, now why would "other contacts" from Google show up when contacts is unchecked under accounts for Google on the ph? Good news is I know the source of the contacts but it still doesn't explain why they are syncing when the box is unchecked. And it doesn't explain why all of the sudden now after having Gmail long after I ever emailed any of those people that would have been in "other contacts" is it all the sudden just now showing up? I mean they must have been there a long time and I've been using Gmail with it unchecked for a long time and suddenly this week on a new phone it shows up when all the other new phones it never did that.
Thanks so much for the fix "Delete empty contacts". I've had the same problem with the no name contacts and I would delete each one as I saw them but it was driving me nuts.
Thanks again!
I have deleted all of thm using the all, but they keep coming back after every reboot, another thing, this was not a problem till I flashed the Google dialer on my xperia. Has been happening every since.

[Q] contacts issues

ok i got a weird issue happening
i have 568 contacts synced through google/gmail

but other contacts that i don't use have stayed synced with no problems
i have actually saves the same contact under different names many times and still have them not sync.
i have checked all of my sync settings and have them syncing correctly
i have the following sync systems setup
verizon backup assistant

This point here kind of confuses me. Have you checked/enabled "internet" syncing for this account? i assume you know where you could selectively turn off and on syncing different items for an account. how did you conclude that internet does not sync for one account?
Syncing is been the basics of smartphones and i don't expect this to be a bug somewhere.
If you have got the time, i would suggest a system reset.
Just for clarification, are you saving numbers and it is not syncing back to your Google account? I had this problem when I first got this phone since I am used to AOSP Roms. I noticed that I did not change my "Contact Type" to my Google account when saving new contacts. The default saves to your phone if you do not select another account. I am not sure if this is the issue you are experiencing. Good luck.

Yes that's right in the area where you can selectively choose what to sync the only thing that's ever an error is the internet for one account that says" sync is experiencing troubles please try again later "
I'll try a reset tonight and see what happens ....

When you create a new contact it has a box that says "Contact Type". If you do not change it to Google, it will default to be saved on your phone only. That is all I can think of if you are saving a contact and it is not syncing. Unless it is a syncing problem throughout your phone.
