Google Sync is a free service that allows you to sync your contacts, email and calendar with your gmail account.
It is a two-way sync, meaning that if you add an appointment or contact to your phone, it will upload to Google's cloud and update your gmail information as well.
I use Google Sync to keep my contacts in the cloud, vs using myPhone since I have multiple phones but only one Windows Live account. If you have ever synced two phones to myPhone under one account, you'll see right away why this is a bad thing.
One of my favorite benefits from using Google Sync is the fact that it not only stores my phone contacts, it also stores their facebook links and contact pictures as well. This means that I can freely flash another ROM without worrying about backing up all of my contacts to SIM or myPhone and then manually updating all of the information for them.
The best part of Google Sync has to be the push email service. As emails arrive (assuming you have set the account up correctly), they will be pushed to your phone via ActiveSync. You don't have to be at your computer for this, it's done over the air.
The only think Google Sync can't do is sync Tasks. If you choose Tasks during the setup, you will receive a cryptic error.
Now that I've told you about the benefits of Google Sync, let's go over how to use it. This assumes you have an existing gmail account. I don't know how to sync with Google without a gmail account, sorry.
I always add my hotmail account first. For some strange reason you can never go back and edit the settings for the first mail account you setup on Windows Mobile, so I use my hotmail account for this.
Steps:
Select your Mail tab and hit the Menu button
Choose "Add Account"
Under "Choose a Mail Provider", select "Outlook" (Don't select Gmail!)
Put your entire gmail address ([email protected]) in the "Email address" box, followed by your password.
Select "Next"
Under "User name" put your email address ([email protected]) again.
The Password field should be filled in, if not just put it in again.
Scroll down.
Leave "Domain" blank.
Scroll down.
Leave "Save password" checked.
Under "Server address" put m.google.com
Leave "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" checked.
Select "Next"
If all options are selected, deselect Tasks (Very Important!)
If not, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar
Hit Advanced Settings
Peak time and Non-peak time (I have "As items arrive" on both here) sets how often your emails are pushed to your phone.
I have nationwide coverage, so I also select "Sync data when roaming".
Hit "Done"
Hit "Done" again.
The phone will now connect to the Google Sync server and begin updating your contacts, calendar appointments and email. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of contacts and such. If you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, they should now appear on your phone in short order. You may choose "Send/Receive" from the mail Menu if you think it is taking too long.
You will now be able to receive your email sent to your gmail account as soon as it arrives. I have also forwarded my email from my other accounts to my gmail account, but this may be too much for you.
I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have the "Smart Phone" plan (so-called "Unlimited Data Plan"), as it will eat up your bandwith quickly. It may also have a detrimental effect on your battery, due to the fact that it requires a constant data and Active Sync connection to work properly.
If you are concerned about your battery, you can try changing the Peak and Non-peak options under "Advanced" to longer intervals. If it makes a big difference in the life of your battery, I would love to hear about it here!
You can view the original Google Sync video and tutorial links here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
Hopefully this will be of use to someone out there! Please let me know if you use Google Sync or if you have trouble following my directions.
---Issue With Labels/Folders---
If you have set gmail to tag messages with labels as they come in, you may not be able to read the messages on your phone. XDA-DEV user pantyshot has managed a workaround and posted it here. Be sure to thank pantyshot for the fix if you find it handy!
Also, newer versions of Outlook Mobile (any available as a cab install so that people don't have to use a custom rom?) support sorting messages by subject. Pretty darn close to the threaded messages in the orgasmic Android Gmail app.
I've been doing this since I got the phone, but it is nice to see someone write up the details.
Nice thx man. I didnt even know this was possible on WM coming from a Nexus. I synced my phonebook with MS outlook but nice to know this is possible.
This should be a sticky!!!
Thanks... nice sticky note.
On Friday, I bought an HD2 to replace my Nexus One (which I gave to my daughter). The N1 & Android are just fine but I wanted to play with the HD2 and WinMo. Not too worried about the lack of support for WinMo 7 as I am certain that we will find versions we can use thanks to XDA.
Ok, back on-topic... I was using Google Sync to get my messages from Gmail to my Nexus One. I now know how to do this with WinMo 6.5. I will address this when I get back home as I am on a business trip in Amman, Jordan and I don't want to rake-up astronomical data roaming charges while over here.
this is helpful for newbies/ beginners..
Anyway I had done set up the gmail as "PRIMARY" account only when i got HD2. why i need hotmail set up as primary account then add gmail? I just curious..
I've been using this method as well, but has anyone noticed that you cannot sync your labels from gmail? Is it just me or Outlook just syncs the inbox aside from contacts and calendar?
The only glitch I have seen with using google sync is that when you import your contacts from google, they get sorted as Last Name, First Name. (Doe, John.)I have always liked seeing my contact list as first name last name. (John Doe.) If you manually try to switch this in your contact list, it gets over written once google syncs again. Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
This method is GREAT. Big thanks to OP

I'm not sure why, but whenever you add a new email account to Windows Mobile and attempt to go back and edit it, the first account you added will always be grayed out. This means you can't modify, or even delete the first account.
Since you may decide you want to change how often you check your gmail, I thought you might want to add a hotmail account (Windows Live) first, since those settings are automatic and can't be changed anyway.
I've always had to do a hardreset in the past to get rid of bad gmail settings, so I learned to always put hotmail first.
Hope that helps

I know, this is annoying. I have added two new contacts and both of them were sorted like this.
You can try deleting the "Last Name" field in your phone contacts, then add the last name beside the first name, but I haven't actually tried that.
If it works, please get back to us

When I used the official Gmail App, it represented labels as folders. Because Google doesn't actually have different folders (just different flags for each message), I don't know of any way to split the messages by folder.
As a matter of fact, I don't think you can do this with regular folders via Outlook, due to the way the built-in email client works.
If anyone knows a fix to this please post; we would all like to separate our messages by folders if possible!

You can try this app I have called Contact Changer. Just install to phone, hit the change button and soft reset. After that they should display correctly, and it's actually WinMo that displays contacts like that b/c I have mine sync'd through Microsoft Myphone (b/c gmail messes up the contact pics) and they display the same way.
Now once you run the app, if you add a contact or delete a contact it will revert to last name first. Just run the Contact Changer and reboot again and you will be golden.

Yes this is the unfortunate aspect of using gmail this way.

Funny you mention that.
I actually used the built-in option to link my favorite contacts to their respective facebook account in my friends list. This changed the contact picture from the camera image I had to their facebook avatar. When next I flashed my phone, Google loaded the contacts back with the facebook linke and facebook avatar, which was very surprising to me.
Does myPhone do the same thing if you use them to keep track of your contacts?

Not sure what you posted this link in reference to. Unless you are confusing Google Sync with ActiveSync...
ActiveSync is the method of connecting your phone directly to your PC, for file transfers, updating your ROM image and standard backups. It is also the name of the protocol that the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to sync data between the Server and ActiveSync-enabled devices.
Google Sync is a free Microsoft Exchange Server that allows "push" email via your phone's data connection. You don't have to be near a PC to sync your calendar, contacts or gmail.
I think the threaded e-mail conversations are only available in the WM 6.5.x versions of WinMo. I am also unable to sync my other folders (Sent, Saved) from Gmail. I have them checked off as well in the Manage Folders option, but nothing appears in these folders after syncing. I think the only possible folder to sync is Inbox.

Are you sure they are actually folders? I thought gmail only has labels that appear as folders in the native clients.
Also, this is the same as most Outlook syncs; it will only give you the unread messages. There may be a setting in gmail that will allow you to retrieve old messages, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that on a mobile phone.
If you want to just get your emails, you can use the "Gmail" option when setting up your new email account on the HD2. This won't "push" like the "Outlook" option will, but you can still set it to manually check as often as every 5 minutes if you can spare the battery life.
Of course, you would be much better off getting the official gmail client for that, since that will also support your lables-as-folders option.
Myself, I prefer to use Google Sync and let that push emails to my phone as well as syncing all of my gmail and phone contacts. I don't use labels any more and don't want all the "Sent" or "Archived" messages to clutter up my phone.
Yea, you're probably right about the labeling/folder issue. I just want to see a saved e-mail to look some thing up at times, but maybe I'll just log onto gmail.com for that on my phone. Is there any Gmail client available for WinMo phones? I haven't seen any. Also, does push kill battery life? (ex. sync every 5 minutes) Or is it a more sophisticated syncing method that will only connect to data when new messages arrive?
If anyone uses Google Sync to get all their gmail and calendar data through the exchange server, you've probably been pretty happy with the service.
EXCEPT for the fact that you can only display your primary google calendar on your Windows Mobile Phone. I don't think Google is going to do anything about this, so I decided to write my own solution.
This is a program that runs on your Windows desktop/laptop and takes any of the calendars you view in Google Calendar and merges them into one calendar... your primary calendar. AND THEY WILL STAY IN SYNC! Meaning: if you change the date or any info on one calendar, this tool will copy those changes to your phone. If you make any changes on your phone, this tool will make those changes to the original calendar your event was from.
This is still in beta stage... so BACKUP ALL YOUR CALENDAR DATA FIRST!!!!! I have also included a function to copy all your primary calendar data to a secondary calendar. You can then use the primary calendar solely for syncing to and from your device.
Known bugs:
1. If you try to sync a calendar that you do NOT have write access to, you're going to get some funky results... it won't work yet. DON'T sync to calendars you don't have write access to.
2. If you sync a calendar, then you stop syncing it (meaning you uncheck the box) and run sync a few times, I'm pretty sure the next time you start syncing that calendar, the whole calendar will get deleted! I haven't made this thing idiot-proof yet. If you want to unsync a calendar with the option of syncing it again at another time, I have included a tool to remove all "tags" from all calendars. Run it! It basically lets you "start over".
3. There's an issue with calendar events remaining on the main calendar after you stop syncing one of your other calendars. I'll get that fixed.
4. There are various error handling routines I still need to add... such as if you screw up the login, it will crash. No biggie yet...
Besides these there are other bugs, I'm sure. However, I'm fairly certain this works for everyday use... I use it to sync my calendar and my fiancee's calendar. Now I see both sets of events on my windows mobile phone.
FYI, for those with security/privacy concerns, I used the sample Google login code that came with the Google Data API, unaltered.

I should mention that once this program is stable (and useful), I intend to port it to the device to run in the background.
looks great, but please explain:
1. how are all the combined events displayed in the merged calendar?: if i have an event in a "work" calendar - how will be displayed in the main calendar? by category "work"?
2. how can i see on the device (which can only sync that main calendar) from which google calendar an event is? - for example, how can i know an event on the device is from "work" calendar?
3. when i create an event on the device - how can i choose to which calendar/category will it be synched?

Aha, well, that is why this is in beta.
1. First of all, there's no way to do anything by category using Google Sync. It just doesn't work that way. So far, there's nothing to identify which calendar it came from.
2. Again, there's no way to tell yet... but I can easily add some code to change the name of the event to something like "[W] Name of Event" so that you would know it came from work.
3. As of this moment, you can only pick ONE calendar that will echo any new event you create on your device. (This is the list of calendars in the 2nd box.) However, as this program gets more advanced, and we add a naming scheme like in point #2, I could try and have the program interpret which calendar it goes into by the header you put in for the event title ([W]...). Or, I could just have the program ask you which calendar it needs to go in when it finds a new event. This second part may have to wait until I move the program over to the mobile phone (which I don't want to do until this thing is optimized or else it's going to suck batteries dry).
Thanks, software like this is on my "wanted" list for long now. Hope you can make it bug free, and a WM version would be great!
Is there anyway to donate?
I use my Google calendar in every day life, and will not risk testing with it, but will try testing with other calendars.
Since nuevasync has stopped being free; I've started looking for an alternative and found this.
Unfortunately it won't run, 'Google_Calendar1 has encountered a problem and needs to close'
This is a splendid initiative.
I'll see if I can risk my data to test this
Did it work?
This is funny... I got no response for a long time so I figured no one cared. I decided to go for something different in the end. I will be getting a Windows 7 Phone within a couple months and decided that one calendar per account (on phone 7) would work just fine for me.
I even deleted VS2008 because I figured I wouldn't need it anymore.
If anyone wants the source code I have so far, I'd be willing to post it. It's written in Visual C#, but it really doesn't have many comments. You'd need to install the Google Data API for Visual Studio, too.
makku12, I for me I wasn't looking for something to do this as I was happy with what I had (nuevasync), but now they want to charge $15 when all I want is to be able to sync my google calendar with my mobile.
All everyone (there are questions and queries all over the internet from loads of people) wants to do is be able to sync all their google calendars with WM, whilst this wasn't that solution, it at least offered an opportunity to get there with an added stage in between.
Google have provided the opportunity to do just one calendar and despite many requests on their forums to enhance this, they haven't. Neuvasync worked by using the category field to keep the calendars separate; I just wish someone a lot more technically gifted than me could do the same.
I've tried oggsync but that seems to be an hour off the true time and again is only for one calendar in the free version (and $30 per annum for more!), gmobilesync is my best bet at the moment, but it is a beta which hasn't been updated for over a year.

As long as you're using Google Sync (google's exchange server) to get your email and calendar data, you'll never be able to use the categories feature in outlook calendars. You're limited to what you get from them...
BUT, that gives me an idea. I was using Google as the base since their API is very easy to use. But now I'm thinking it might be better to merge all of your Google Calendar data into a primary Windows Live (hotmail) calendar. I'd have to study how to interact with the Windows Live calendar but that way I could use the category option! Now that Hotmail provides an free exchange server to sync with, this might be the way to go. Let me check up on this...
(FYI, this would be damn useful because Windows Phone is limited to ONE calendar per account. It's not quite as limited as WM6.5, but you still can't sync multiple calendars within one account.)

When I was using Neuvasyc, I was using their exchange server so they must have found a way to interface with google's calendar to use the category function to distinguish between the different calendars. Are you saying that you can find a way to get hotmail to do the same so you can just use hotmail as we used to use Nuevasync?
If that doesn't work, a way to do the same on the PC with Outlook's categories would be great.
Shame... I just bumped into this thread some time ago, wish I was sooner. Please all vote it to front page, so it will get more attention and someone will pick up development.

Hi,
I have flashed GSB V1.6 and I find three or more entries for each contact. Any reason why? Same happened when flashed Tazz's Gingerbread ROM. Can't seem to get rid of this problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Do you have the Facebook or Twitter app installed, set up to sync with contacts? I know I had a few duplicate contacts from FB because the names were different; I was able to go into the FB contact, edit the contact, and there was a link button on the menu - so I could link it with an existing contact.
Otherwise maybe you have dupes in your Google contacts? If you are a gmail user, you can go into gmail (on a PC browser), look at contacts, and I think that they have a duplicate detector.
Go to settings/Accounts & Sync, anything other than your gmail go into and uncheck sync contacts.

I had to do this the other day. Syncing Facebook, Gmail, etc was showing 300+ contacts. I logged into my Gmail account via my laptop and told it to find and sync duplicates. I had to fix a few manually (middle initials etc), but now only have 70 contacts.
Removing duplicates from my gmail account fixed the issue!!!
It was driving me crazy! Thanks so much for the tip!

Duplicates are really frustrating; this can cause other conflicts as well. On the side note using duplicate remover tool Scrubly Duplicate Remover is really effective. This automatically scan and delete those duplicates , merge compatible contacts and resolve other related conflicts.

I was curious enough to want to go ahead and try this. Google's own duplicate & merge feature misses some things, and I have just around 250 contacts so it would be a PITA to manually do things unless I absolutely have to.

I'm not sure what you are referring to about it "missing" some things but I just found that after flashing to the newest CM7 release, all my contacts were duplicated. I used the merge function on the web interface (not the phone) and it worked perfectly.
I'm not really sure why the issue even happened but I'm glad Google had something in place to help fix in short order.

I used Google's manual merge feature recently and I'm satisfied with the results, but I have nearly 300 contacts AFTER merging so it was a lot of manual work.
I was referring to Google's automatic duplicate detection in the same menu. All the contacts I manually merged were missed by it's duplicate detection feature. Probably 50 duplicates (25 or less contacts since some contacts had three or four entries).
Hi, was hoping someone could help as this minor issue is really bugging me.
When I first got the phone, in the contacts app, all my contacts with a Facebook account displayed their profile images along with their most recent Facebook status.
Recently, I reset the phone with a full wipe. Since then, only the profile pictures of those with Facebook show up, not their status updates.
Any ideas? Already tried resyncing within the fb app and also under settings /accounts.

Appreciate you looking. There was definately a status update in the space next to the right of the contact picture. Weird I can't get it anymore.

Hi, I have full Facebook profile photos and Recent Status updates on all my contacts.. I've not changed any setting in Samsung but I use an app called "HaxSync" works great on all ICS phones.
hope this helps.
Facebook status and pics didn't work for me using the official FB app. Only Friendcaster seems to fix that, and it seems better anyway.
SORTED
OK, iv figured it out. Hope this works for you guys too.
For those not getting the FB pics to sync in Facebook (this happened to me after doing a factory reset), I found that uninstalling the facebook app, then reinstalling the app and syncing again within the app updated all my contacts in the contacts app with their corresponding facebook profile pics (no third party app required except Facebook)
OK, the best bit - to get the facebook statuses of all the contacts within the contact app to show up, (its pretty cool as it shows up under the contact name in the scroll list, and when you click the contact, its next to their pictures which you can click to read in full - also shows up on screen when the contact calls/if you call the contact), all you need to do is add the Facebook widget on one of the homescreens - let the widget refresh, VOILA! Thats it .. you can at this point remove the widget.
Let me know if it worked for you too

Let me know if it worked for you too
Thanks

Thanks for the update.
Unfortunately none of this worked for me.
I have no problems with contact pics syncing - all fine - but get no status updates shown in contacts app.

Strange you definitely added the Facebook widget and refreshed the widget? Could it be that your contacts don't have recent updates? I know only some of my contacts have statuses showing as only a few have had recent updates.
Maybe try removing fb app, reinstalling, syncing, adding widget and refreshing widget again?
Hey, installing the FB widget worked! I didn't have to delete and re-install FB. Thanks for this tip!

Thanks for the post.. I seem to have a separate issue where I tell FB to only sync with contacts on my phone, but yet it syncs every friend on FB to my phone..
I only have a handful of contacts on the phone to begin with, but FB doesn't seem to care which option I select -- it just syncs everyone. :\

It looks like every time my phone syncs with each of my accounts, it is bringing all the contacts again as new contacts rather than syncing them with the existing ones. This is very annoying because every time I go to my contacts application the same contact is repeated several times.
I tried recreating the accounts (deleting all the contacts and syncing them again) but no matter what I do, within a few minutes I start seeing the multiple copies of all the contacts again...
Does anyone know how to stop the madness?
Thanks in advance!

go into your gmail on a pc and merge all duplicate contacts, that should do it, had that issue a long time ago.

The problem is not duplicate contacts. Say I have one contact on my gmail account named John Doe. There is only one John Doe in my gmail acocunt, however on my phone, with time, there will be several John Does, and while it creates multiple copies of John Doe on the phone, there will only be one John Doe on my gmail account.
Makes better sense now?
Uncheck sync contacts. If you leave it checked every time it syncs up it creates duplicates. After you uncheck sync contacts go to you contacts and delete all the dulpicates then export your contacts to you SD card. Its frustrating it kept happening to me till I used this method. I no longer use Google to sync my contacts for me.

but syncing the contacts is part of the whole point of having a smartphone. if i add a contact on the phone, i want it to sycn to my other web services, be it google or my company's exchange server or my hotmail account. and if i add a contact on any of those accounts, i want it on my phone the next time i use it.
syncing works perfectly on other platforms and it was working well on the Note until ICS, at least for me.
and don't get me started on not being able to merge more than 5 contacts on the phone, if you have gmail, hotmail, exchange, facebook, linked in, google+, tango, and more (i do) and if a contact is on all of those services then you can only merge 5 and the rest appear as a separate contact on the address book... #$^%$#^... i know that windows phone merges all the contacts from all the services for you...
so, no. stopping sync should not be the solution, although i recognize that it would stop creating duplicates on my phone, it would defeat the purpose of having a smart phone, at least for me...
thanks for your suggestion, though. i appreciate it.
Sounds like have your contacts saved not just thru Google but on the phone itself. Also u can filter to show just Google contacts. I only sync with Google so I never had this but seen it with ppl
No contacts on the phone. Also each of my accounts have its own contacts. I don't want to put my work contacts in my google account, because those live in active directory and are synchronized with my outlook on my PC, and on the company's citric servers through exchange...
I'm beginning to think that I'm switching to windows phone 8 when it comes out. This never happened to me on WP7, or on the old windows mobile...

yes i do, but that's what combining contacts is supposed to be for. too bad touchwiz only lets you combine five of them...
Well just out of curiosity what would happen if you signed out of the non-google account and rebooted? Would the duplicate contacts be gone?
merging the duplicates should solve the problem, also make sure you dont have facebook, sim card, phone and google all syncing. if you have numbers on all those accounts it will cause duplicates

you can only merge 5 contacts. and the problem is that the contacts start duplicating themselves...
i had to disable contacts from all my accounts and sync only the google contacts, and i'm really upset because i should be able to use the contacts from all my services, which used to work fine before ICS and works fine on windows phone 8
I've had almost the exact issue with my contacts and I only sync my google contacts. Drove me crazy, everytime I flashed an ics rom it did it but I think I finally fixed it. I went into contact settings and checked "show contacts with numbers only" and all the other contacts went away.

i don't only store numbers in my contacts, i also store addresses and emails, so i want to see them all...
The same over here...
It happens the same to me, I was thinking that may be an issue asosiated to flashing rom with out wipe... I'm going to try to do a full wipe and reinstall all over again, but it's just anoying because it only repeat contacts on the phone and no in my google or exchange accounts. And believe me it's not a merging problem... it's something else...
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (international version) with ICS 4.0.4

Galaxy S3 too
I also have this problem on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I had it once where it duplicated contacts once, but I deleted them all and started over and my contacts all linked up nicely with the contacts I have in Skype and WhatsApp. However, since last week it is misbehaving. I have deleted the contacts on my phone and let them sync again, but some time later they duplicate. How it manages to link to Skype and WhatsApp contacts is also varies. Sometimes just a couple link automatically - and not the same name each time. Right now I have 7 contacts for each name and 7 entries in the calendar for each appointment. I sync contacts to Skype, WhatsApp and Microsoft Exchange only, nothing to Facebook, Gmail etc. If I delete 1 entry (out of 7) on the phone then my 1 entry in Outlook goes.
Sorry I don't have a solution to offer yet, but I will keep trying. My feeling is that is has something to do with Kies but I have not figured out what yet (and probably Microsoft Exchange Server, but that is unavailable for most of us to test...). Things seemed to get worse after installing the latest Android update (4.04) that was pushed out last week.

I only used Kies to install the ICS update. All my accounts are setup as exchange accounts. I have one warning, though. One of the things I tried was I went to each account and told it not to sync the contacts, then I went to the contacts app and deleted all the contacts and then I reenabled sync on my accounts to redownload the contacts and the result was that all of the contacts from one of my exchange accounts were gone. I was able to prevent further disaster because first I had backed up my contacts on my PC, and because when I reenabled sync, the phone warned me that I was deleting too many contacts and let me cancel the deletion (I had to restart the phone because it kept warning me and stopping the deletion wouldn't work)...
I had to end up deleting all my accounts and recreating them, Importing all the contacts from my other accounts to my gmail account and only syncing my contacts with my gmail, Which sucks, but I guess there is no other way for now...
I'm strongly thinking about going to windows phone 8 when it comes out just because of this issue...
Today, I have 7 copies of each of my contacts... and I have almost 700 contacts, so I can't try anything that include a one by one solution. My exchange account doesn't seem to duplicate (or more) my contacts on the server. Also the battery was almost gone by noon... there must be something wrong on the room that Keeps syncing duplicating contacts
