Yeah, I'm not entering my name anywhere. Thanks anyway, HTC. Besides, AlphaRev and Unrevoked already did your job for you.
Since our last update, many of you have asked how the bootloader unlocking process will actually work, and in particular why HTC's most recently released devices still have a locked bootloader. Rest assured we're making progress toward our goal to roll out the first software updates in August to support unlocking for the global HTC Sensation, followed soon by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. Because unlocking the bootloader provides extensive control over the device and modifications may cause operation, security and experience issues, new devices will continue to ship locked but will support user-initiated unlocking using a new Web-based tool.
So how will this work? The Web tool, which will launch this month, requires that you register an account with a valid e-mail address and accept legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of your warranty. Then plug in your phone to a computer with the Android SDK loaded to retrieve a device identifier token, which you can then enter into the Web tool to receive a unique unlock key via e-mail. Finally, apply the key to your device and unlocking will be initiated on your phone.
We're excited to bring bootloader unlocking to developers and enthusiasts, and we feel this new Web tool will meet your needs and continue to provide customers with the best experience. Thanks to the community for supporting these efforts!

wow. some actual clarity on what they plan to do.
nice to see an update !
but for the evo3d is a bit late
Lmao, actually according to their explanation, their method sounds just like AlpharevX.It would be hilarious if alpharevX sold their method to HTC.
That blows. They couldn't just ship the damn thing unlocked.

Well, if he did I hope he didn't sell them the serial numbers of the ones already unlocked jk
I guess it all makes sense (har har).
If it makes the carriers happy, who cares if this is how they do it? I'm sure whenever they release a bootloader unlocker someone on XDA will take it and make it so you can do it without the email/key. We're gonna come out ahead either way.
Well i guess now they will know when we unlock our bootloader and warranty I don't care since I don't use the warranty anyways
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
I'd be curious to know from Google, Sprint and Samsung how many problems they have from the NexusS4G being very easily unlockable...I doubt it's very many...and HTC should suck on that.
I don't know if that's as much of a fair comparison - with the Nexus being near stock I wouldn't expect them to be flashed/bricked nearly as much as with the Evo4G.
The OG Evo gained so much from flashing - features, kernels, whole new versions of sense. And it had so many updates over the life of the phone, making for different rooting methods and having people flash their phones many many times, making it one of if not the most developed phone we have seen.
I'm quite certain the brick count on those were some of the highest anyone's ever seen as well. That's after all the returns from dead pixels, bad charging ports, and what have you. You can understand a carrier/manufacturer's wishing to prevent all that.
By the same token, it feels like HTC benefits greatly from the development community, perhaps using a lot of what they see here in their own updates (maybe even waiting for people to fix their bugs). They definitely see value in unlocking phones, which I guess we should be happy about.
As long as HTC keeps their unlocked policy I will remain a loyal customer.

Were there that many bricked E4G's? I don't recall hearing about that many of them in my tenure on the forum...admittedly I barely spent any time in General that year as Development was bustling from before day 1.
...but, per capita I doubt the brick-count was that far off the average for any other popular phone worth rooting. God knows I did horrible things to mine and never even had to fix it via adb/fastboot.... it was a very popular phone even among the average joe.
I know that HTC benefits greatly from the dev community. Where do you think they got the FPS-unlock from? Among other things. That's how open source works and is designed to work. That's also why myself and others were so shocked with the whole 'locking' fiasco.
...now, aside from our own speculation about how high the brick rate may or may not have been why not speculate about something more productive: How LOW the brick rate could be if they utilized eMMC's secure-write technology to make a 'mega-recovery' partition that would be locked and even WE wouldn't want to unlock it....that could be used in a worst case scenario to fully restore a phone to stock...to enable the unlocking that WE want and reduce the (understandable) liability of allowing full control that they want. We get unlock, they get insulation from liability of allowing such a feature (that most people STILL wouldn't know about or care about)....why don't they do that? eMMC makes that trivial to implement (as we found out the hard way)...neglecting the fact that they could have utilized any number of simpler technologies to accomplish the same thing even before eMMC...why not?
That's a topic for further speculation (get your tinfoil hats ready), but, why don't they do that? Play both sides of the field. No voided warranties, no brick returns, no pissed off modders....win win win, right? The carrier doesn't want that? Cool, let us know, we'll flock to the carrier that allows it...something tells me Sprint would be that underdog...

Not at all like what AlphaRevX did. The only reason they had the serial number check was because it was in Beta so they could shut down their serial generator and stop people using their unlock if they found a problem with it.
This HTC method makes sense, and I think it's fair. Their tool only needs to hook up to your phone to get the device identifier token, the unlock actually happens on the phone itself. This way HTC gets a list of unlocked phones so when people go for support you can't lie to them that your phone was unlocked, but people can have day one unlocks on any phone from HTC going forward.
So now HTC wants to know who exactly is unlocking there phones??
Nice try you sneaky basterds
What's wrong with them knowing if you're unlocked? They have to do that... Otherwise insurance companies would get upset. This is legit and it if people screw their phones up due to user error while unlocked then they shouldn't be able to file a claim.
This also let's them see just how many people want to be unlocked so they don't try and take it away from us again

yeah....I dunno. They could (relatively) easily make the phones nearly brick-proof (see my above post) yet they do not. Why? I'm almost irritated by all of the altruistic sentiment for 'doing the right thing'....not because of the altruism, I actually find that refreshing and endearing. It's more because they could take steps to nearly eliminate the potential for bricking (and in doing so insulate the insurance company from liability...making that a moot point), but that people are defending a position that needn't exist.

You don't know why they're doing it. Maybe they wanna track the people that abuse the crap out of wireless tether... Maybe it's for other reasons. Who cares, they are unlocking it for us and that's all that matters. I have nothing to hide when I root so I care less. If you're upset about it then there are other options.
People are getting exactly what they wanted and they still find a reason to cry... Get over it already

I have a very dumb question....Where can I find the guide to unlock/jailbreak the radar so I can install apps not in the market??
I did search and found this chevron thing but its about a year old, dont know if it applies to the RADAR.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
There currently isn't any way to unlock the Radar or any 2nd gen HTC WP7. I'm anxiously waiting for this, would love to install the screen capture app on mine.

Don't know why my last comment didn't show, damn xda app!
But, interop unlocking gives you/an app access to certain drivers locked down by MS, usually reserved for OEM's or partners.
Currently their is no way to interop unlock any 2nd gen HTC devices like our Radar or Titans. For now us 2nd gen HTC owners are stuck with stock phones. Unless you have a developer account, student account, or purchase a chevron token.

So what does the Chevron token do? Will it work on the Radar?
Well the Chevron Token unlocks the phone to sideload a set number of apps, 10 I think. It should work fine on the Radar. But they're currently "sold out". They will hopefully be able to sell more, it's only $10. It doesn't interop unlock the phone, but interop unlock usually isn't necessary unless you really want to change registry values or fully unlock your phone for some homebrew apps that require fully unlocked phones.
My girlfriend also waiting for Jailbreak because she wants to use Advance Config.
Is there any way to deploy an Registry Editor to the Radar?
No. All 2nd gen devices are locked down hard.

If you create a DreamSpark account through Microsoft, you can dev-unlock your phone for free. You just need a functioning .edu email address. Just Google "Microsoft DreamSpark" and you should see the website where you can create (and then verify) your account. I can't post the link because I'm a new member.
I found this thread and hoping this student account stuff is still valid. So I just created and verified my info. Now where would I even begin to unlock/jailbreak the Radar?

Yes! I recommend if you crave for all the excitement of rooting and playing around with the tablet as you mentioned the CM9 developments of the ICS for the GT P7500/7510 are pretty exciting...... Beware though that this can be addicting,, waiting each night for some thing more

If you can wait, wait till the MWC which is happening this month end. As per the rumors Samsung will unveil the new version of this tab. So the current tab will get a price cut or you can opt for the new version.
No
Just say NO to locked hardware.
Don't listen to people who tell you to relax and that you can still do x,y,z,
Samsung won't let you do 1,2,3.
With unlocked hardware you can take risks and recover.
More people willing to take risks means a larger dev community.
A larger dev community is good for you.
With unlocked hardware you can actually own what you paid for.
The same people who will tell you to relax and accept limited ownership will themselves admit that if they sold an unlocked tablet on ebay they would ask for more money and advertise the fact that it's unlocked. This means that when Samsung OTA locked all of those unlocked tablets they actually took something of monetary value -and didn't even try to justify it. Asus customers raised up a storm and at least got a promise. Samsung got a pass...I think a little of that is that people already bought the tab and no one wants to feel like a chump.
My advice is to wait and see on Asus' promise of unlocking the Prime. In the meantime don't encourage bad behavior by buying a Samsung product.

do you mean locked = unrooted or locked = stuck with a provider?
Anyway, rooting the device is pretty easy and, if you can't do it, you should stay away from custom rom (and anything android, for that matter)
When it's rooted, well, the fun starts! Samsung provide very good hardware and the latest price cut is realy apealing! I got mine 2 weeks ago for 399$ can, for all it gives, it's pretty descent! IMHO, the quality to price ratio is pretty much the best!
But if you can wait after the annoucement for the new thing, you should get it for even less!

We've gone from locking down phones to locking down general purpose devices that are analogous to laptops. No one would currently tolerate a laptop that can't flash BIOS or uses encryption to permanently lock you in to an OS, but that is exactly where we will be if people apathetically/sheepishly accept this. Any device with a locked bootloader should be rejected generally, and more specifically buying this tablet rewards unethical behavior (permanently and irrevocably locking people out of their own property months after purchase).
I stand by my recommendation. Wait and see if Asus follows through and delivers an unlock tool and if they do, get a Prime. Myself, I'm dumping this on some chump at ebay and getting a tablet I can own 100% instead of 90%.

I understand squat from what you're trying to tell here...
What exactly do you mean by "locked"?
Most tablets, PDA's and the likes comes pre-loaded with an OS, even netbook or notebook for that matters, even worst for apple's device, wich are "locked" in more ways than anything.
As for Galaxy's, you can put about everything you want with either Odin or with the SDK tools, how is the device "locked" and how is any other (like Asus') are less locked...
It is the same for any PC's, you need special tools to flash the bios, same as you need Odin to flash a bootloader. You can root the OS and be "unlocked" everywhere on the OS layer, open a terminal emulator and do about anything that can be done to a device running an U/X kernel (or the likes)
So, again, how is the Galaxy Tab locked?
The boot loader is locked, keeping him from doing specific things. That we can put various android ROMs on it while still having the locked boot loader is not the issue.
As I understand it people with locked boot loaders cannot use nvflash and must either odin or cwm flash things; believe it or not that does in fact limit things that you can flash. Specifically what I can't say for certain because it's not something of interest to me and obviously not of interest to you either otherwise you'd have uncovered this limitation as well.
Like me, most people looking to flash custom builds on the tab are looking for android based builds like CM9 which are obviously doable on the otherwise locked tab. Rlarkin's point is valid but based on the amount of activity here in the development forum I'd venture to guess he's in the minority as he has needs that go beyond many of those who purchase the device.
We're all free to voice our opinions, it's up the the OP to decide whether or not the locked boot loader is an issue. For most of us it's not.

Well, after reading about your so called "locked", how is it relevant to the OP?
The bootloader lock seems to affect only a small fraction of the users, IE: The one that wants imperatively to use NVFlash instead of Odin. Most of the users will do whatever they want with the stock tab, a fraction of the users will flash custom roms, on that fraction, only another small fraction will use tools like Odin, SDKs and more advanced tools, on that fraction, only another small fraction will "need" NVflash.
To conclude, you shouldn't base your recomendation on what YOU need, but rather on what the person asking the question needs. So, if the OP wants to flash using NvFlash, then he shouldn't buy this device. But if you want custom roms, CM9 or many other things that doesn't require this specific tool, well, IMHO, it's a pretty nice device!
I just got my galaxy tab yesterday after returning my transformer prime and am very happy with it. Already rooted it and have romans build on it it runs amazing.

With a locked boot loader, if you make the wrong mistake, you . are . done . Brick.
With an unlocked bootloader you can recover. What's that worth to you? How many potential devs don't try something because of the risk involved? What's that mean to you (someone not really interested in development)? It means less cool stuff for you.
With a locked boot loader you can basically achieve "root" and be able to install applications like sshd or anyconnect that *should already work anyway*. By that I mean no one should have to jump through a single hoop to get something so basic as ssh or a vpn client to work on a device like this, this is *not* a phone.
But you can't (way too risky to even think about) repartition, have true dual boot, or experiment with many other things.
So I don't think I'm being selfish in my recommendation. Unlocked bootloaders mean more devs that are able to do more things for *you*. Supporting vendors that sell locked hardware hurts everyone in the end, you included. As I said in my original post, would you buy a laptop that via encryption locks you in solidly to one OS? I don't think anyone would today, but that's where we'll all be eventually if people continue to tolerate this. I mean why should the existence of a touch screen make it okay to lock me out of my own tablet? It shouldn't.
Really a tegra3 + unlocked -GPS vs tegra2 + locked is a no brainer in my opinion. The OP will have more options with the Prime.
I would really not recommend the prime many ppl including me are and were having major problems with it. the wifi is completely screwed up in it, and unless u can solder and take it apart I recommend not wasting ur money I had it 10 days don't get me wrong its a great piece of equipment actually its unbelievable but the wifi, GPS, and Bluetooth drivers and hardware are not there it really is a shame.

I wouldn't recommend the tab 10.1 for your case
I'm using it now. It feels just langgy.
I love android, I have sgs2 as my phone and the sgs2 is way smoother.
But the same couldn't be said for the tab10.1.
Its actually just a big LG optimus 2x, the same lausy processor.
Lots of games lags.
After I flash to overcome rom, things improved, but still slower and less smooth compared to I pad.
Basic things like the text entry also slow.
At any text entry, the keyboard always takes a small lag to appear. Most obvious in browser.
I still will choose the tab over the ipad2.
But since you are coming from ipad2, recommend you buy galaxy tab 7.7 or 7 plus.
These 2 uses the exynos chip set similar to sgs 2. Very powerful gpu.
If u try tab 10.1 or 8.9, sure you will be frustrated by the occational lag.
Just being honest.
PS: I still love my tab.
I haven't been on the galaxy tab 10.1 long but I know one thing from experience so far that this tablet on Romans rom is just as fast and maybe less laggy than the stock transformer prime which I am shocked by. I am now asking myself why I didn't buy this before when it came out instead of waiting all I can say is wooooooooow

I want to try Windows 8 on the S3. Everyone knows it is possible but nobody knows who is working on it nor when it will be available.
I dont think people will bother in porting Windows Phone 7.5 but when Windows PHONE 8 comes out then people will try.
But what about the full beta OS of Windows 8?, just like in the past people were porting Ubuntu over to Android Handsets.
Lets be honest Windows Phone 8 (if it is what it claims to be) will leave Android and Google dead in the water.
Personally, I'm more than happy with Android. If you really want to make this happen though, good luck, but if you are only trying to start a flame war, then please do so somewhere else.

Microsoft now is taking the right track of developing the windows phone OS, even if we don't like it they are doing a great job and this job will take them some were.

I honestly couldn't think of a worse OS for a mobile device. I liked windows os when i had xda's from years ago. then i had iphone and loved that, then moved to android which to me will be the best os for years to come.
the latest edition of windows phone, with tiles . . . . rubbish idea IMO!!!
At least with android you can have what you want where you want and have a good old desktop experience.
Android all the way i say!!
To the OP . . . good luck in your quest to run windows phone 8 on your gs3.
Paul.
If you ask this it feels like you say "Let's port iOS to SGS3." Android is the best OS ever. Not because I'm saying that no because everyone says that. And WP8 is even weaker. Which Smartphones will get that? Nokias, Xingxings or other that. Android is #simplythebest! Sorry bout that but this had to be!

wait ativ s release then go buy it
WP 8 version of s3
corporate tosh....just like Apple
Open source= anarchy in action= freedom
Enjoy your Windows/Apple slavery....personally I like my freedom
Where there is a will there is a way. If the HD2 can have Android and Windows Phone 7.5, then the S3 can certainly do it aswell.
And to those who think that Windows 8 will not be good and it is just another lame Microsoft attempt etc..
Imagine a day where you could flash ROMS and edit system files without a PC. You think Mobiles will ever allow you to flash another mobile??
Not in the next 10-15 years at least. Mobiles are largley entertainment and communication based.
Where as productivity and production-power will always remain with WINDOWS PCs. Hence, ''WINDOWS'' - Mac is a overated system which will never find a place for Mobile developers.
Why? Because of the price and the lack of customization. -- JUST LIKE iOS.
Windows 8 and Phone 8 will change the surface of Mobile in such a way that it will kill of Apple and then (sadly) Droids.
Android is cool and customizable OS but can be more unstable and insecure then any other.
At least with Windows there is security --- whether on a Phone or PC.

Porting android to a new device is relatively easy, because we have access to the source, hence android on HD2. Porting a closed source OS, windows 8, to a new device is a magnitude harder and illegal to boot.

The Librarian of Congress has announced some new rules that take effect on Oct 28th that I think should strike fear and disgust in the hearts and minds of everyone in the XDA community.
To put it simply, you will no longer legally be able to root or jailbreak your phone UNTIL your contract with the carrier is over.
I for one see a conspiracy by the carriers in this matter.
Here's the link to the Fox News article
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/10/27/new-rules-let-jailbreak-phones-but-not-tablets/
And here's a link to the story on Android Police and their take on the matter:

Wow. So everybody buy their next phone by Jan 30. And also a tablets
Should not be considered a game console. And how would they catch you rooting it?

Just purchase your products outright, off contract.
That's what I did. Only limit I have is no 4g phones available through Verizon on prepaid.

I'd be moderately alright with this if it also meant they couldn't legally lock phones either without contract or after the contract expires.
They can go straight to hell. I will do what the hell ever i want to with MY device that I PURCHASED.
....man....what a bunch of *****es....glad my upgrade is the first of January...but probably won't use it....unbranded device here I come.
Droid X2 CM10 A2
I dont get why its not as simple as "If you root your phone and mess it up, dont come to us for help. Thats your fault." Whats so hard about that? Instead they are making it so you cant do what you want with your device. Luckily, I have an HP TouchPad thats fully open and rooted by default. Its not even an official Android device. I dont think it even counts. lol. My Droid X2 is already rooted and I bought it a year ago so I guess it doesn't fall under that category. And whatever phone I get next will be a phone that is unlockable by the manufacture. I'll do my research this time. Most manufacturers are doing that anyway. HTC unlocks their devices. Motorola is starting to. Obviously Google does. So I dont know how this even affects me yet.

I see this as an attack by the carriers against the openness of Android. The part about tablets concerns me as well. I have an Acer A200, wifi only. It's rooted, running CM10 and a custom kernel. The language doesn't discriminate by wifi only vs 3G/4G enabled tablets.
Google should have gone to bat for all devices. I see no difference in a phone or tablet running Android OS. (cr)Apple products are a whole different kettle of fish. But for Android products, there should be no distinction as to rooting or running custom roms/kernels. But somehow, the Librarian of Congress has meddled without a good technical background just as the jury in the Apple/Samsung trial did.
