so you have a stock Vibrant...you wanna overclock?
Are you rooted? Im pretty sure that too run a different kernel you need a diffrent rom other than the stock JFD.
You might get more answers if you posted in the right section.
Its the ji6 I think

dont bother giving him crap just help the guy. mods can clean it up and move it later.
ok well 1st off - know that what your about to do can potentially brick or damage your device and that myself, xda, jesus, mary and the hly ghost, the hobo behind the walmart and your aunt frank have nothing to do with this so you can only blame yourself
i would get to know ODIN real well first off. make sure you are able to get into download mode. via the hardware method OR ADB
use the Vibrant bible to find info on that.
I apologize guys I'm assuming this belongs in q&a

Not trying to be a wiseguy but:
Read the "Vibrant directory ( Bible ) and search this forum. Look for the subjects you're interested in. All questions are answered you just need to study before you start.
Learn how to use odin - if you follow the links you will have everything you need to get back to stock in an emergency.
Read about and learn how to use one click root.
Read about and learn how to use Rom Manager to flash roms
Use Titanium backup to backup your apps
Good luck and have fun!
Ok real quick I have odin I have the stock vibrant rom from xda I am pretty good with this stuff just new to this phone I also have a few roms but kinda wanna wait for 2.2 but would like a new kernel I have rom manager and a back up of my rom but I am having a problem getting adb to work just been using the terminal apk but I need help.with this and thank you for your time

its a 2.2 Froyo based off the tmobile leak
everything works as it should and its fast and very stable.
OP you need to spend a couple hours reading and understanding several things. Most if not all you need is in the vibrant bible thread. If you can't get adb to work its almost always the driver. Must understand odin just in case something goes wrong. Its hard to truely brick this phone but not impossible.

No, that only saves your data and apps. You need to save it or you can use the ones located in the vibrant library. You can always revert back to stock using odin but do so AT YOUR OWN RISK... Good luck

The Bible is the greatest thing EVER.
Just seriously use how to use Odin. If you can learn how to get into download mode consistently and connect to odin successfully you will be fine. Then learn how to use recocery, which is very easy on the vibrant. you just install ROM manager from the market and flash clockwork mod recovery. learn how to backup and restore and you can flash things through recovery. Zips are for recovery, and Tar files are for Odin. If you want to OC i recommend "Corev2" by team whiskey (since JAC has dissapeared) which works with most ROMs and should work well with stock rooted. There is Odin files and zip files for stock kernels, jfd and ji6, which you could just flash over if you dont like it. Nandroid backups dont backup kernels, so make sure you have the right kernel on when you restore something. You can find everything in the BIBLE like everyone has told you to try. One word of the wise, if you load a Froyo 2.2 on your phone and then revert back to 2.1, make sure you flash a 2.1 kernel first before you restore. So many people think they brick after they do that.
And usually if you are waiting for official firmware, it appears here on XDA ready to flash (i flashed official ji6 before it was availible OTA) at some point. I would recommend you use a rooted ji6 ROM with Corev2 (and possibly the ji2 modem to save battery life but i like the ji6 modem) this will let you OC and UV without setcpu. this is kind of a scattered response but im just trying to help. I am running AOSP jk2 1.1 by Anderdroid and i LOVE IT.
It looks like you have everything ready on your phone.
Just learn Odin, you don't really need ADB. Make sure your phone can go into the download mode via the vol up and vol down key and connect USB cable for download mode. Its a Triangle Icon with android robot with shovel.
There you should load the Pit file and Tar file to flash back to Stock in case you brick you phone. As far as flashing ROM goes, remember this!!
If you flash a 2.1 Kernel + ROM like Fusion 1.2, and create a Nandroid backup through ClockWork. Then decided to go to a Froyo 2.2 kernel + ROM like Obsidian or MacnutR11 to try out. Do not restore Nandroid backup to 2.1, it will brick your phone requring u to ODin back to stock.
Bottom line 2.1 ROM will not work with 2.2 kernel and 2.1 kernel will not work with 2.2 ROM. Don't mix them up.
Basically if you are running a 2.1 kernel + rom, then switch to 2.2 kernel and rom. For some reason you don't like it, make sure you flash back to 2.1 kernel + rom instead of doing a nandroid restore.
Just moved from iPhone to i777, wanted to get ICS, but eneded up bricking my first phone by installing something meant for i9000. At that time I didn’t know Galaxy S2 has variants, just searched for S2 and got burned. My fault…..should have understood better.
I want to do it right this time so I have been reading about i777, ROMs, kernels, CWM.
I want to put SHOStock or CM9 ROM.
I know where these ROMs are and how to flash them using CWM.
But that’s where my confusion starts, that there are just too many sources and options and I don’t know which one is right.
So please advise.
How do I root?
Using this? It has multiple options

or this ?
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
Which kernel to use
The one mentioned in SHOStock thread #3 post the Cherry Picker Kernel for i777 or Entorpy? Siayh
How do I get CWM on these, isn’t recovery part of the kernel or do I flash It separately or may be use ROM Manager, once rooted.
Modem? What does it do? Is it for phone or wi-fi and how do I know which one to use.
My phone’s data

Here's what you need to do:
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9.
First of all thanks for responding.......
Is there a relation between which ROM will work with which Kernel, I may be wrong but I got the impression, depending on which ROM you are putting, you should have a kernel that supports it.
Also it seems like, ShoStock has its own variation of entropy, named cherry picker.
Thanks.......

Sometimes there is, but it seems like most of the ICS kernels are interchangeable. Just try out each kernel for a few days...once you have CWM, switching kernels is no big deal. When switching kernels, though, it's always wise to flash jivy's Kernel Cleaning Script just before flashing a new kernel.
Can you use CWM to flash kernels as well ? I thought they always have to be done using ODIN.
May be I underestimated CWM, I thought it was for ROMs and zips only.

u can use mobile odin or cwm but its just a matter of preference you just had to use mobile odin at first to acquire a cwm enabled kernel but pretty much you can flash everything in cwm as long as its specified to be cwm flashable zip kernels roms and modems and such
edit: the free mobile odin only lets you flash kernels btw its the premium version that lets you do everything without going to recovery
hope to help

You don't seem to have a firm grasp on all this. Maybe you should do some more reading before going further...
Anyway, here's a brief explanation:
A kernel is the underlying core of the operating system; it is how the OS interacts with the hardware.
A rom (the proper term is actually firmware, but nobody uses it) is basically the whole user interface; it's the part of the OS you see. When you flash a rom, you're flashing everything, including a kernel.
Like I said before, you never want to flash a custom kernel using Odin. Doing so will trip the phone's flash counter, and this will show up if you ever have to take the phone in for warranty stuff.
The reason it's ok to use Odin to flash the stock with root package is that it comes with the stock kernel, not a custom one. Basically, once you're rooted, you shouldn't touch Odin again unless its to recover from a brick. Basically everything else can be done in CWM.
Yes I am still reading & trying to get a grip on it.
So first I will root it, then flash kernel using Mobil Odin
Then get in CWM mode ad flash ROM, which will come with the kernel i.e. cherrypicker kernel and modem I need.
Yes one part I have understood very well is that use CWM as much as one can to avoid committing mistakes by flashing something that doesn't belong.
Sorry for asking so many qs., I wish I could understand this faster.....
Thanks again........

You don't need any more of a guide than that. Don't worry about breaking wifi, that isn't a problem on any of the popular roms.
If you want a Samsung based ICS rom that works really well, I suggest ShoStock2. If you want an AOSP based rom, most people suggest AOKP. I haven't tried it personally.

Stock EH03 One-Click
What is It?
Right now, all this is is stock EH03, no bootloaders included, packaged up into a Heimdall One-Click package. If people have requests for other ones they want, I am happy to make them as well. I am planning on making one with CWM baked in soon. No bootloaders are included.
Why?
I built it for myself because I'm a linux/mac user. I got tired of having to load up Heimdall, try and find my EH03 package, download the pit, add all the files, etc. every time I fubar'd my dev device, So I built the one-click so I only have to keep track of the .jar, and can use it on any platform.

I've got the day off and nothings really going on so I'm looking to root my SGS III. Still in the preparation phase but I'm basically looking to find the quickest, easiest way to obtain root.
What I've come across is the tool kit and CF-Root methods of doing this. Basically what's the difference between these? I'm also reading about flash counter? And triangle away gets rid of it? I'm not too sure on that really..
Ideally I think I'd prefer using Odin but I cant seem to extract the CF-Root file to get the .Tar PDA file. This is why I've stopped and decided to post before proceeding to **** it all up, as I once did with my SGS...
Any help would be appreciated thanks all

Can't really comment on "best"
But I've had good experience with AHD, WanamLite (2.0) and Omega. All with stock kernels. But Siyaah 1.4 is a good kernel to start with if you want a custom kernel.
Currently my daily driver is Faryaab's AOSP JB Build 3. Loving it!
Sorry, poorly phrased.. should have said, what rom do you use and why?
I confess at the moment I have gone back to a stock de-odexed Rom just to see what Samsung is like after 2 years of being on aosp/cm9 roms, just running siyah kernel over it and removed a bit of bloat.....quite enjoying it

I have done the exact same thing as of this morning!
I enjoyed my journey through cm9/10 and aosp JB but I have to say I'm liking the latest Sammy FW, its a lot smoother than it was when I left it to flash CM9 back around when I got the phone.
So ya, I'm gone back to the darkside, not-as-crap-as-before-wiz.

It's quite nice having everything working as it should for once....and can't really finds any faults so far, just a matter of nailing all the bloat to the wall and all seems good

Thanks for the thoughts and help everyone, much appreciated, will comment back again if I screw up, expect something by 10pm knowing my luck

Flash then do a nandroid, can't really go wrong them!
I had the latest nightly of cm9 for i777 and I recently had to revert to a stock rooted ROM. However, I can't seem to get CWM installed via odin with the tar or the zip, it hangs on zimage or it hangs at the initial boot logo. I also tried mobile odin with the zip and no luck.
I have tried the following in the ODIN PDA section:
1. GT-I9100G_LP7_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.5.0.4.tar -- Results in not booting past initial screen, so I reflash 'I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL'
2. cwm-recovery-ALL.tar -- Hangs at the zimage process in odin.
3. SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar -- Hangs at zimage process in odin
How can I get CWM installed so I can get back to CM9 RC2?
You need to read more.
CWM is included with every custom kernel; you do not download it separately.
Don't bother trying to update CWM. Ever.
Read every single one of the links posted in the stickies at the top of this forum. You'll be far better off by doing so.
Yet another confused user... hmmm. To the OP if you don't want to search around for hours on end, and if you don't care about how things work, and don't care about your warranty. Try out my tutorial.
Recovery is built into the kernel on the i777. Trying to flash a recovery or use Rom manager to flash a recovery will either not work, or cause boot loop problems.
To get cwm you must flash a kernel with cwm built in.

Are you rooted? First you have to root phone using the ODIN installer found in sticky. It'll say stock root no BL or something. Put phone into download mode and run it. Then download mobile odin lite and the i777 additional file, both found in the mobile odin xda thread (google it). Then download a kernel like Siyah. Get the zImage file from the zip and copy to phone. Use mobile odin to select kernel zImage and flash. That's it. It's pretty simple. PM me if you need more help
Is the sarcasm really necessary.
Again I'm rooted with stock rom. I read and searched a bit, but I'm missing something clearly. I appreciate any direction on how to flash the appropriate kernal.

I would like to add that I was anxious to get my daily driver back in working order and I have been out of the scene for a while. Therefore, I was looking to the community for some assistance with getting me back up to speed quick since my searching and reading was not revealing a solution fast enough.
Thank you in advance to all that are willing to help.

The direction you need has already been given in this thread; did you read what karate104 said? Install a custom kernel. Then you will have CWM.
Also, if you didn't already know this, you can't install an ICS kernel on stock rooted GB and expect it to boot. You'll have to use Entropy's Daily Driver or Siyah for GB.

THANKS, I am following your post root recommended steps.
What was wrong with following the guides in the sticky? They have all the info you need. You wouldn't have been sitting around waiting for an answer on your redundant thread if you had read the stickies.

I saw karate104 said and found it helpful, that's way I acknowledged him and thanked him. In regards to getting back on an ICS ROM, I have flashed the CM9 Resurrection ROM after getting CWM in place, then I' should be aligned for a better ICS kernal.
Again, I was out of the mix for a while since my CM9 i777 nightlies were performing well as a daily driver for months. But I recently had to revert to stock after the 8/3 nightly caused issues with batt and booting.
I didn't expect to get such a response from the community.

Of course item 1 didn't boot - an OMAP kernel will never boot on an Exynos device.
I9100 "G" variant is completely different from I9100, and why were you even trying to install an I9100 variant?
3) should have worked - that's an old stock GB kernel with CWM, it should have flashed unless something you did earlier dorked up your device...
What's wrong with the guides? Nothing actually, I didn't think it would be a big deal to ask a question and save some time. I didn't mean to annoy anyone.
Thanks to all that pointed me in the right direction and saved me time getting up to speed on the threads. I flashed my Stock Rooted GB ROM with the Siyah kernal zimage file using Mobile Odin. Then I flashed the CM9 RC2 ROM for i777 in CWM and wiped accordingly.

Women's soccer doesn't count (as I finish my last BL Lime with lemon/lime salt) =P
Thanks for the search, but I phrased my question incorrectly. I should have asked if there was any way to take away thanks that others have given to sort of downrate bs replies, sry.
