roaming on verizon purposely, 3g data, and text message question. Please help - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So the only way I can figure out how to get verizon 3g is to dial *#*#4636#*#* and switch to EvDo ONLY to get 3g. With that, I cant get text messages even when I have full bars and selected no roaming guards. When I remove the EvDo option, I still get full bars, but drop 3g and CAN get messages. I cant roam 3g and get messages? what should I do?

I know in the past I've used ##PRL# to switch to a Verizon PRL. Is that possible on this phone? I haven't tried yet.

Do that, but just press the menu button, and select radio frequency of 800MHz. That's VZW's band. Don't change the radios, just the band. That'll force you to use Verizon's network. Works for me.

How do you switch the radio frequency? Does this get faster 3g speeds than when I am on Sprint? How can this be reversed to go back on Sprint?

Whats your preferred network type when you do that? Everytime I select 800 mhz, I dont have any bars, its an X.
Do you also force your phone to roam?

I'm having a slight issue with this method. I tried it, and I messed with a few settings. Now, my phone stays roaming. I've tried restarting. I've tried wiping and reflashing MeanBean. I have even flashed CM10.1, but it stays always roaming. Anybody know how to get it back to just using Sprint's network?

I got it fixed. And I didn't think I could update profile or prl when I was rooted. I kept on messing with the settings, and when I saw that Sprint's band was 1900 mhz, I flashed back over to MeanBean to mess with the phone settings since CM10.1 wouldn't let me. After I got back to MeanBean, I kept trying to change it, but it wouldn't take. My phone would keep restarting itself before the full change could work. Finally I got it to work again, after getting it set back to 1900 mhz. I've learned quite a bit about it just messing around. But thank you for the help anyways

[Q] 3G only setting?

on my captivate i used to be able to set the network selection to use auto, 3G only and Edge. i dont see these options in wireless settings, i jsut see an option to select network. is there a way to set it to only use 3G?
No because the phone only shows either E for edge or H+ for 3G or HSDPA.
More than likely you could get an application from the market that lets you switch and see if that works, but.... what's wrong with the way it manages data now?

Newer phones are using "smart" radio management chips (or something like that). The newly released Thunderbolt is the same way. Which sucks because it was a good tool for battery management
it sometimes switches to edge and i wanted to force it to stay on 3G. my captivate would do the same thing and keeping it on 3G worked fine.
is there any hacks to add this setting?

Lol it switches to edge because you don't have a 3G ssignal; what else is it supposed to do if you don't have it?
You can choose (for throat part) to go down but you can't just magically get a better/faster signal.

I was just stating what I said to inform people, just in case someone thought you could force 3G at ALL times, which isn't possible if you aren't getting 3G in your area.

i think you have to redo the setting when you reboot.
Edit: i just notice that it also changes back when i plugged it in overnight. is there a way to keep this setting permanently?
I too am needing to set my phone to connect to Edge only. I have 1 bar at the house when my network type is HSDPA. When connected to HSDPA at the house, with one bar, I constantly get dropped calls or my phone may not ring at all. If the phone decides to connect to Edge, which has a full signal, then everything seems to be a-ok. Most of the time the phone completely disconnects from all networks when it switches from HSDPA to Edge... not cool.
I can not get this sucker to connect to Edge only via setting the preferred network type to WCDMA. The phone will automatically set itself to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) if I manually try to set WCDMA as the preferred network.
Rather annoying to say the least. ATT is the only carrier that has a full signal at the house. That's the only reason I that I signed up with them.

bamf signal issues?

Anyone having issues with signal on bamf 1.3? Was having problems with 3g dropping out a lot before I flashed. It seems to be worse since I flashed... I'm not in 4G area and remember seeing something about 3g issues when not in 4G.... Anyone have any info on this?

Same here. I havent noticed any difference than stock
No problem here as well.
So far so good. Live in a area with good 4g, but work where 4g is spotty... Haven't noticed any issues vs the stock rom.
I am in no 4G area as well and no problem except I never got more than 2 bars compared to full on my DX. I however changed the settings on the modem (dial ##778# password 000000) so it could be why I have no drops in 3G.

4G will be enabled by default. If it can't find a 4G signal, it will then drop to 3G or 1x.
It's the same way when 3G first came out it tried to stay on that radio band and would only drop to 1x when it HAD to.
If you've done the hack to turn off 4G, then make sure you select CDMA auto (PRL) and NOT CDMA only
For the other peeps new out there reading this and wondering what both I and infamous are talking about, here's the skinny:
There is currently no widget to shut off the 4G radio on demand yet, but we all expect one soon. You can change the radio settings manually by doing the following:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* then select "Phone Information", scroll down to the dropdown box and choose CDMA auto (PRL).
Be advised, this will disable 4G permanently until you follow the same procedure and switch back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto
There are a couple of apps floating around that do this for you, as well

I realized that, I have been using that app called "Any Cut" and made a short cut to my phone info and have been switching it from there. I click "CDMA auto (PRL)" and I get neither 3g or 1x. I used to own an Incredible and I would get 3g almost everywhere and didn't have a problem with it. But now, I either have 4g or no internet connection at all (unless connected to Wifi).
I am getting the same thing. When I use CDMA auto (PRL) I only get 1X. If I use CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto the I will get 3G. I think right now it all depends on where you are located and how many problems Verizon is having in your area. After all this is their first phone to be on this new network setup.
I did the steps here and it helped a ton.

I am admittedly not very well versed in cellular technologies, but I know a few things. When I click on "Select radio band" it gives me a menu with the heading "Set GSM/UTMS band". With the EVO LTE being a CDMA phone, what good would it do to change a GSM setting?
nice find....almost like a roam only hack. When I choose 800 I immediately start roaming, which at work gives me much better signal.
Hmmm...I did this, and I did get much better reception but it also immediately went to roaming. When I went into settings and forced it to use the Sprint network only...all signal was lost.
Not sure I want to force roaming all the time.
Sounds like Verizon's 800 MHz signal has better coverage in your location than Sprint's signal, and you're forcing it to roam (they have reciprocal agreements).
Definitely YMMV, but hey, it should work fine. Note that Sprint has the option of terminating you if your roaming minutes go too high.

To reverse the effects, just press the multi-task button (or redo the first steps) and choose Cellular 1900. That should put you back on Sprint's spectrum.
I'm not suggesting full-time roam, but it does help if you're ever in a low signal area on Sprint..
I immediately reversed it. It's a good trick to know if you're ever in a spotty area and need to force roaming though.

Don't do this! You can't get it to automatically switch between the two after you choose one.
As a part of sprints network vision they are slowly converting their iden network (push to talk) which is on the 800mhz band to a voice band which will soon result in stronger signal and better coverage for voice. So this will be a good tweak in a few months once that is fully carried out but for now it's just going to throw you on verizon if you select 800mhz

Before trying this; if you use Google Wallet, please go RESET it now, and sync all of your data because this will reset your phone back to stock.
Now try a Reverse Logistics
1. From your phone dial pad enter ##786#
2. Select Menu from the top right corner
3. Select Reset
4. Enter your MSL code (you can call sprint to get this or root your phone and use MSL Reader)
The Phone should reboot and clear all data and system. I know you can just do a factory reset but I did the same thing and for some reason the factory reset and stock RUU did not work for me I had to do the ##786# which got rid of the X, but the data would not come back on, but since I got the phone data has been spotty, but the new PRL has fixed that somewhat.. I've bricked about 3 phones since the launch date trying things I know I had no business, but my curiosity has allowed me to find fixes for a lot of problems except for the NFC bricking problem with Wallet (SO PLEASE RESET GOOGLE WALLET BEFORE DOING THIS RESET).........
Good luck and let me know it this gets rid of the No Signal problem from manually switching frequencies.

Cannot make make/receive calls on LTE

First time posting on here so please don't tear me a new ass if I'm doing something wrong lol.
I just got a Galaxy Note I (SGH-I717) on AT&T.
Initially I was having problems with reception and 4G and not getting LTE at all. I finally got LTE working my setting up the PTA APN and by dialing *#2263# and selecting a different preferred band (I chose "LTE ALL" in the LTE sub-menu and saved it). I put the SIM back in, powered the phone back up and LTE was working. However my signal bars haven't gone past one bar while on LTE. I get data, and can even send and receive MMS/SMS, but cannot send/receive calls.
Someone please tell me if I did something wrong or am leaving out any vital info.

Perhaps the radio should be updated. The latest official ATT radio is UCMD3.
Check if you have it under settings/about/phone status/baseband. It works on all builds but is the newest radio which improves signal sometimes.

Those appear to be as follows in the link I posted. The only difference i saw was BEARER: LTE (default is unspecified) play with this one.. that was different in the post.
Other then that, I know ATT and Tmobile only use LTE Band 4 in the USA anyways.
So LTE ALL under the service menu wouldnt help. Was your coverage always that bad?
Please someone with ATT help this poor soul out. I'm at wits end. Usually this would be something to bug your service provider about. Myabe they can refresh something on your account, or give you a newer SIM card at your local store.

Yes, unfortunately service has always been this bad. I have called AT&T several times/been to the AT&T store and talked to a representative and they have done the following:
- Checked/rechecked my IMEI number (it always matches)
- Checked and rechecked my SIM number (before AND after I received a new SIM card
- Unregistered/Re-registered my phone with the towers
- Called a tech out to the tower to make sure nothing is going on the them (I know its not, my buddies all have LTE running fine on their devices)
Thank you so much, scariola. You've been a helped all you can.
RESOLVED
I believe I have fixed the problem.
I dialed *#2263# to get to the Band Selection screen. I already had selected "LTE ALL" under the LTE Preference menu. I unselected it, chose Back and then End (both under the softkey menu). I then re-dialed *#2263# to get back into the Band Selection menu except this time I selected "Automatic" and chose End in the softkey menu. Re-inserted SIM, and rebooted.
No I get signal 3-5 bars, 4G and 4G LTE where strong signal is available.
I thought LTE was only data and could not be used for calls.

Right. The data is the 3g/4g connection and the symbol next to the bars is the data speed. The bars is the strength of the gsm/phone signal.
It actually sounds like the OP was involved in a tower maintenance scenario and probably didn't matter what he did.
You can do the same settings changing from the mobile data settings menu.
You can't do the same settings from the mobile data settings menu. There you can only mess with data bands. You can turn LTE off or on on my Canadian ROM but you can't use it as the only band. And I didn't think you could even change this on ATT ROMs/radios at all. I believe he used LTE as the one and only bands for phone and data which caused his issue. I have achieved this same result by messing with those band setting found by *#2263#.
However the ability to send/receive texts but no calls does not make sense. That could have been tower issues since they both use the same phone band.

Er, what?
Is that a JB thing because I know it wasn't present on the ATT ICS ROM. Also where is the LTE setting??
The default is "fastest available". If you choose the high speed setting, it will connect to whatever is best.
I assumed JB stock because the OP said he just got the phone.

It's on the canadian version of JB in the settings/mobile network. Missing from att JB though.
You can however force LTE only through the service menu. Att and tmobile use band 4. Not sure about anyone else.
You must dial *#2263# into dialer and select LTE and choose the band your provider supports. That will force LTE only. Dial the same thing into dialer and select automatic* to go back to jumping through LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
I understand it is on the Canadian version as I am using it. The Canadian version also includes LTE. I know how this all works. I have a Rogers note. But my question was to ranger on where he pulled that screenshot from. I always had an LTE option both on ICS and JB. And it was my understanding that ATT left this feature out on all versions and their modem was locked.

You can't force LTE if its not available. Its best to leave it at auto and let the modem do Its job of connecting to the best signal.

It may have been, but soon after I *thought* I had fixed the problem, the same issue restarted. I believe it was an issue with the phone hardware itself, maybe the antenna. I don't know. I sold the phone and got an S3.
No problems with the S3 :good:
I used to have that problem until i changed the MNC to 260

Pretty sure 4g is LTE from what I've read. You can also try dialing *#*#4636#*#* go into phone information, (make sure you turn WiFi off) change the settings to one with LTE. Sometimes you need to turn the radio off then on again and see if that helps. Sometimes you have to toggle between them a few times. When LTE catches you should reboot. Also unless you're in an LTE area it won't show

I went into that menu but i don't have a button or setting for LTE. I did however do the *#2263# and selected LTE and thatvseems ti work but its goes back to Edge even if there's LTE. Im on a stock Rom. I attached the screen shot of the menu you gave me..
Did you change/add an APN setting?

I just switched back over to TMO today. I flashed the UVLG3 modem as that seems to provide the best signal in my area. I usually don't get LTE at home, but when I return to work next week, I'll report back with my results.
