still works for me, but not everyone..please delete
I am admittedly not very well versed in cellular technologies, but I know a few things. When I click on "Select radio band" it gives me a menu with the heading "Set GSM/UTMS band". With the EVO LTE being a CDMA phone, what good would it do to change a GSM setting?
nice find....almost like a roam only hack. When I choose 800 I immediately start roaming, which at work gives me much better signal.
Hmmm...I did this, and I did get much better reception but it also immediately went to roaming. When I went into settings and forced it to use the Sprint network only...all signal was lost.
Not sure I want to force roaming all the time.
Sounds like Verizon's 800 MHz signal has better coverage in your location than Sprint's signal, and you're forcing it to roam (they have reciprocal agreements).
Definitely YMMV, but hey, it should work fine. Note that Sprint has the option of terminating you if your roaming minutes go too high.

To reverse the effects, just press the multi-task button (or redo the first steps) and choose Cellular 1900. That should put you back on Sprint's spectrum.
I'm not suggesting full-time roam, but it does help if you're ever in a low signal area on Sprint..
I immediately reversed it. It's a good trick to know if you're ever in a spotty area and need to force roaming though.

as did I but now if i roam i have no signal and just the x over the bars, anyone know if there is away to reset it to switch on its own?
Don't do this! You can't get it to automatically switch between the two after you choose one.
As a part of sprints network vision they are slowly converting their iden network (push to talk) which is on the 800mhz band to a voice band which will soon result in stronger signal and better coverage for voice. So this will be a good tweak in a few months once that is fully carried out but for now it's just going to throw you on verizon if you select 800mhz

Before trying this; if you use Google Wallet, please go RESET it now, and sync all of your data because this will reset your phone back to stock.
Now try a Reverse Logistics
1. From your phone dial pad enter ##786#
2. Select Menu from the top right corner
3. Select Reset
4. Enter your MSL code (you can call sprint to get this or root your phone and use MSL Reader)
The Phone should reboot and clear all data and system. I know you can just do a factory reset but I did the same thing and for some reason the factory reset and stock RUU did not work for me I had to do the ##786# which got rid of the X, but the data would not come back on, but since I got the phone data has been spotty, but the new PRL has fixed that somewhat.. I've bricked about 3 phones since the launch date trying things I know I had no business, but my curiosity has allowed me to find fixes for a lot of problems except for the NFC bricking problem with Wallet (SO PLEASE RESET GOOGLE WALLET BEFORE DOING THIS RESET).........
Good luck and let me know it this gets rid of the No Signal problem from manually switching frequencies.

Oh my, thank you so much for this. Seriously, thank you. I was contemplating returning the EVO for a new one after messing this up. After following your guide, I can not roam on Verizon 3G with 11115 PRL without manually choosing 800Mhz. Thank you!
Don't go over 800 minutes or 300mb while roaming!

My fiance and I both got thunderbolts a few months ago. My phone keeps losing the network connection. The 3G icon completely disappears from the status bar but the signal bars remain and have a few bars of signal. If I try to do anything when the phone is like this I get a no network connection error. Mine does this about every 10 minutes for about 5 seconds. i can have my phone laying right beside hers on the table and hers holds solid 3G and mine doesnt.
I have called verizon tech support 2 times about this and the second time they want to open a trouble ticket because they think its an issue with the network. I think I have a bad phone and would just like them to replace it. Anyone else seen this happen and can shed some light on it?
What kind of battery cover do you have? Only reason I ask is that the actual antenna for 3g/4g is on the battery cover itself.
You could get a signal boost if you put aluminum foil in your battery cover, not covering the camera holes of course. The 2 gold connections on the top of your phone in the back are the connectors for the antenna on the back cover. So by putting aluminum foil on the cover you are basically extending the antenna or if you put aluminum on the gold it might bridge a small gap that is preventing conductivity between the antenna and the contacts.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link, but I already checked that stuff. I'm really thinking I have a faulty device. My battery cover is the stock one and is on the phone tightly, and I even swapped my battery cover with my fiances. I even tried slightly bending the antenna contacts up so they make better contact and still have the same problem. The last thing I can think of is that I could have a bad sim card. 4G works fine when I'm in a 4G area though. I don't get why verizon thinks it is my line.
I've heard of one other person whos line is bad no matter what phone they use and that's slayers (CM7) wife.

First the bars are for voice so you can lose 3g and still have cell service. 2nd have you tried the app LTE onoff? If you put it on the option for cdma auto prl it should bring the signal in. If that doesn't help I would take it to Verizon.

I lose 3G and 1X both. I can't call or get data when this happens. I still have bars but the 3G/1X icons are non-existent on the status bar. And yeah I have the radio tools option in my wireless settings menu and I have toggled back and forth with no change. My phone is rooted and I've tried several radio combos and also many different roms with the same problem. I have even RUU'd the phone back to 100% stock with the same problem.
I'm almost tempted to go back to my incredible to see if it happens on it. I never had this issue until I got the thunderbolt.
I am on vacation this week and my 3g disappeared in the middle of a hotspot session yesterday. I spent all afternoon flashing, clearing, etc, and my ultimate solution is the one below from android central. I am certain this is a Vzw doing something to the towers in the area as my Xoom, my wife's iPhone, and her iPad2 all kept 3g the entire time.
This should be added to OP.
If the link fails Google "Thunderbolt 3g problems". It will be the first result.

Here is the entire article to give proper credit.
QUOTED FROM ANDROID CENTRAL:
"We'd hoped to give Verizon's network a couple more days to settle before breaking this one on you, but these are drastic times, folks. See, more than a few of you have had issues with getting 3G data on the HTC ThunderBolt when you're in a non-4G area. Nope, doesn't make much sense. But landle in the Android Central Forums has done a nice job explaining how the TB uses the eHPRD 3G network to speed the handoff between 3G and 4G data. Problem is, it ain't working for a lot of people. Good news is there's a fix --no hard resets (which until now had been the recommended fix), human sacrifice or other unpleasantness. Here's what you need to do:
Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." You want "Edit Mode."
You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A." Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications." That's it. You're done.
The phone will reboot (don't worry, you're not losing any data here), and things should, you know, actually work. As landale points out, you'll want to change this setting back once Verizon gets its network sorted out. But in the meantime, enjoy your, erm, new 3G! [Android Central Forums] Thanks, landale!"

Thanks. I saw this article before, but if I do this my phone won't switch to 4G when I go into a 4G area right?
I still don't get why my phone does this an my fiances doesn't. It is 99% likely that we are on the same tower too.
EDIT: Just tried the fix from the article posted above and still having the same problem.
I am sorry to have gotten your hopes up. I should have read closer, I took it that you both had the issue. Plain as day on a reread though.
Had it worked I think your 4G would have been busted.
I added some more details to my issue when I reposted in another thread. Next time you lose 3g try checking for software updates to see if it pulls the 3g back on.

Is the *228 radio update method still valid for the Tbolt? I'm assuming if you were on the phone with Verizon they would have had you do that if it is. But just throwing this out there in case we are just overlooking the obvious.
Also added my question to the post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15256013#post15256013
@sabbotage
If you are on stock rom & radio, then you either have a bad sim card or a defective phone. Go to verizon & swap sim cards. If you still have problems, exchange the phone.

nope it isn't, Verizon pushed a new PRL to my phone because I was having 4G issues (that was their solution?). didn't fix anything. and my 3G icon disappears once a day for a few seconds.
I've been having this problem probably once a day since I've gotten the phone where my phone will lose data signal while switching between 3G and LTE and the only way to get data back is to restart the phone. Turning airplane mode on and off won't work either.
Ive had that issue too..but most of the time it switches back n forth no problem

the 3G our phones use is not exactly the same as standard 3G unless you force your phone into EVDO 3G via the ##778 menu. which if you are not in a 4g zone I would recommend simply for stability. The 3G our phones use is basically a layer between 3G and LTE as I've had it explained to me.. I really don't know much else about it though, sorry. I'm sure someone else here can shine more light on it however.

same here guys. call Verizon and let them know. I think it helps if a bunch of us make them aware.
I've had a ton of weird data issues with the Rezound. I get 1x where i should get 3g, i get 3g where i should get 4g and i get nothing way too often.
I've only had this happen once with the rezound. Shows nothing but bars, no data can be used. Sometimes switching to 3g or 4g in lte on/off helps.
Had this problem intermittently on both my wife's and my bolts, completely agree its just a lte being a new tech issue.
I've listened to a podcast on how the handoff works and its definitely not fool proof.

This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*

Same issue as you. I live in a 3G area only and my 3G drops out a lot. Even a reboot doesn't get it back. Not sure what to do :/
Hi, so this month my 3G seemed extremely slow with pings in the 1000+, as well as less than 0.10mbps download/upload speeds. Today I noticed it's only connecting to 1X. This is even with full bars.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Sprint who tried refreshing everything to no avail. They had me reset the settings within ##DATA# also.
It started some time, this month, after the last update. I am rooted, S-OFF, etc. running Stock With Goodies and even reverted back to the regular stock ROM and nothing is changed. I have the latest radios and firmwares also.
I don't have LTE in my area, but 3G is usually pretty decent. I have 3 other phones (EVO 3D's) in my home, all on 3G fine. I had Sprint activate my 3D to my line and it worked fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sprint is undergoing a major network overhaul. If your device connects to 3g fine in other areas than its a sprint issue and nothing you can do except wait for the work to be completed.

have you try doing the service reset? ##SCRTN# (##72786#) that is better then doing the ##3282# when you do the ##72786# that is going to redo the hands-free activation and do the prl update and at the same time it's going to be refreshing the service

It you can't get 3g any where you may need to replace the phone. That's what happened to me... And I couldn't fix it no matter what I did.

have you tried a full ##786# reset? (it will get your phone to factory fresh condition, and erase all data)
I had the same issue, and no amount of profile updates, ##3282# resets or ##72786# resets helped, final suggestion was a factory reset which did work, be sure to Nandroid before trying it
Hopefully you don't have the same problem, I tried factory restarting it four different ways, all kinds of other resets and dialer things and settings... Nothing worked.

Sadly, I think I do.
So, as I was around town, I noticed it does connect to 3G, but only for maybe 10-30 seconds then drops back to 1X. It even has trouble holding a 1X data connection now.
So, my last option is to return it to Sprint. I have it rooted and also have S-OFF. To return it for warranty replacement, I need to remove root (I will flash the RUU, etc.) Do I also have to get S-ON, if so how is that accomplished?
Thank you all for your help.
You will need to relock it. There is a fastboot command for it somewhere.

Before you do all this... how is development in your area? Is Network Vision currently being implemented? I ask this because I am having similar issues and have for a few weeks. The reason? It was Network Vision being put into place and towers being set up with eHRPD protocol for the lte <-> cdma handoff. After doing a large search on it, it seems any areas that are getting LTE especially, and soon at that (like mine) are having the same problems you're describing. Seemingly because Sprint is locking phones out of connecting to the towers as they continue work with NV and LTE. Have you tried setting the phone to CDMA/EVDO only? This is the only option that works for me until this development is finished.

I'm in Phoenix, AZ and as far as I know, there is no NV or LTE going on. I have tried CDMA only, but same problems. I just got my replacement and it's staying on 3G just fine.
im getting this prob i apply lte only or lte/cdma and it goes straight to 1x weird...havent been able to get lte and im in san antonio where lte is live...thinking bout taking this phone back see if they exchange it
I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

I use to get spotty LTE here in san Antonio so I thought it was the radio. But now I've been getting it pretty consistantly everywhere. So now I'm starting to think its there towers or something

Using a Sense ROM, open your phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Select "Phone Information" then scroll down to "Preferred Network Type" and that should give you the option you're looking for

Or download the app "network" from playstore. Let's u do the same thing while less obtrusive and gives u more options.

Can you link it? I'm finding various apps named "network" something or another but none with just that solely as the title
The icon changed so I had a bit of trouble finding it but here you go Network app

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

Someone try the 10/21 build of cm10 from deck.
I'm holding lte and seeing it places I couldn't get it before even when set to lte only.
This has completely corrected the issue for me.

For some reason, I can't connect to data anymore in LTE/CDMA mode. I recently went back to visit my folks in the Bay Area and was in a fringe area where LTE was active. I tried putting the phone into LTE mode only to try to maintain the connection, but have since changed back to the default setting.
Now I can only connect to data when I set the data mode to CDMA Mode only. I tried updating profile, PRL, wiping caches, and even restoring an old back up with no luck. Anyone ever have this problem?
The 3G icon is on in LTE/CDMA mode, but I can't open any webpages.
My wife's iPhone 4s connects just fine in the same areas.
they are working on your towers
is not an issue with your phone
I've been driving around all over the bay area today and it still won't connect unless its in CDMA only mode. Doubt its a tower issue. I'm driving back down to LA today so I'll know for sure.
Again, I'm only trying to connect to 3G but want to leave the mobile settings on LTE/CDMA mode since LTE is stating to pop up at home.

That's the biggest bunch of Sprint crap i ever heard. I was talking with Sprint today for over an hour and a half about this bull crap. a couple days ago i got a error 67 code on my HTC EVO (og, i went back to it because of this issue). Yesterday I switched back to my EVO LTE. I still got the error code. They said to wait for an hour for it to get its mobile network. I waited all night and still nothing. this morning. i contacted Sprint. The lady tried for over an hour, resetting everything known to man kind
we did the ##3282# and reset everything. We Changed and reste everything on the phone. activated my old EVO and back to the new EVO and still nothing.
I am sick of Sprint saying this is a tower issue. If by some miracle it is, disable the towers LTE until you are done with everything. I know this isn't effecting everyone but your pissing a lot of people off with this crap. At least just replace the phones that are not working.
anyone know what CDMA HDR stands for?
If you're referring to eHRPD, it stands for Evolved High Rate Packet Data, I believe.

Yep. It is basically the same as 3g, but allows for a smooth transition from 3g to lte as you gain and lose lte signal.
Word is we see this before they upgrade to lte.
I'm having a lot of 3g problems but definitely not tower related.

try doing the ##72786# on your phone pad and put in your MSL (if you don't know your msl call sprint or download msl reader from play store) after you do that press menu than reset... phone will reboot and it will go through the handsfree activation and that will get your data back... let us know if it works...

I don't think my tower was down. My 3G worked perfectly at the time when my phone was set to CDMA mode only vs LTE/CDMA mode. Likewise, the wife's iPhone 4s worked at the time as well.
Now that I'm no longer in the Bay Area and back down in LA, 3G seems to work normally again on LTE/CDMA mode.

i'm having this same exact issue now. I had to replace my EVO due to a brick .. the replacement doesnt get mobile data when LTE/CDMA is selected ... i have to select CDMA only. My home area doesnt have LTE yet, but parts of Nashville do have unofficial LTE ... not sure that it matters ..
just curious if anyone ever figured out for sure what it is ... if its tower issues i'm not sure why that would affect the LTE/CDMA mode ... also the timing is quite miraculous that a new phone is received and that same day the towers all of a sudden have issues ...
is this something that can be fixed by Sprint on their side or am i truly stuck with just CDMA only mode?
My problem just went away after awhile. Maybe people were right about towers being upgraded...
I had the same problem once. Solved it by flashing (then) latest radios. I did same troubleshooting steps as you, update PRL, profile, etc. Nothing helped. Flashing radios solved the problem.
hrm .. guess i'll go snatch the latest radios to just be sure ...
FYI .. i updated the radios by using captain throwbacks 3.16 firmware update zip ...
fixed the issue. So i guess it was radio related.

Awesome! Thanks for saving me the frustration of bringing it in for service. The only downside is losing all the info.

I take that back. I've been sick lately and havent left the house in days. Just got back out today and sure enough I still have the problem. I'm going to take it to the Sprint store in the next few days and have them scratch their heads over it.
I had the same problem. Our would be fixed for a couple hours then data would drop again. Had to get a replacement from asurion. Update if they get yours figured out

I've dealt with folks on the phone now twice and they are saying it was due to some software update. Which has to be complete garbage ... why would Sprint do this? it makes no sense.
