Hi,
I'm having problems syncing my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account. Basically, they're syncing the wrong way!
If I put a new number in my phone then sync to Gmail the number is deleted as it isn't already in my Gmail contacts list.
Surely this is the wrong way around? Surely it should add the new number to my Gmail account? After all, the phone is the logical place to create new contacts.
So, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
If it matters I'm running Vodafone branded firmware: Baseband 1.2.28, Build R2BA024.
Thanks.

could it be you're editing your contacts on gmail as well? then again.. it couldn't be because it's 2 different contacts right?
how bout, if you create an account in google contacts? does it get synced with your fone and show up there?
Yeah if I add a contact to Gmail it syncs to my phone fine. Just not the other way around.
*confused*

Perhaps I should have put this in the Q&A section!
Sorry Mods. My fault!
Care to move it for me? I don't want to start a duplicate thread.

i also have a question to this case. obviously (and i think this is also the reason why this thread was opened) gmail sync only syncs the contacts from your gmail-account to the phone...actually it would be more valuable if i could transfer the contacts from my phone to my gmail-account, as it would also be a kind of backup if something happens to my device.
it is also a thing of daily routine, if i receive a new number or mailadress, i do save it in my phone. because of the only sync-direction gmail->phone, i have to sit in front of my pc in the evening and add the new contact details to my gmail-account...? wouldn't it be easier if i could start a transfer from my phone TO gmail?!?!

My thoughts exactly! Far more logical that way around.
The weird thing is, it used to work that way for me. Now it doesn't. As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings on either my phone or my gmail account. Very strange!
Tried clearing the cache btw and that hasn't solved the problem.

so you already did that with your X10? you transferred the contacts of your phone to gmail?
of course it would be perfect, if i could chose which side should synchronize with the other...
e.g. if i need to reset my phone, then i'd love to get my contacts back from gmail!
hope, that somebody can help us here!

Yeah. As far as I'm aware it used to sync in both directions. When I first got my phone I ran a manual sync and all my contacts appeared on my phone. Then if I added one to my phone, or changed one, and ran another sync it would update my gmail contacts with the new/changed one.
Now it doesn't. Strange!
The only thing I can think it would be is that I changed the last part of my address from googlemail.com to gmail.com.
I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

hey dont worry for that part as it syncs all contacts in a very clever way, for eg i had flashed my phone several times and didnt kept backup of my contacts(apart from one on gmail) and when i was done with flashing i just use to sync them again with gmail and voila..ph got updated according to copy of gmail contacts...so it doesnt deleates the contacts on gmail...

hm, so it should normally align both states maybe? is the sync-function really checking the contacts of the phone and those in gmail an adds only the contacts on that side, where they are missing?
well, i have tried the sync once and it deleted all the new contacts on my phone! there was only a transfer of my gmail-contacts to my X10...phone book was ignored and even overwritten!
any hints what sunjin an i do wrong?

It used to sync both ways for me but now it doesn't. This is very, VERY annoying as I frequently add new contacts to my phone but I now have to remember to go add them to Gmail too or they get deleted next time I sync. Illogical if you ask me.
Can anyone with a different phone/version of Android confirm if this happens to you also?

Hi. Updated to Nordic 2.1 last night. Easy as pie.
Problem: Although only one of each of my contacts shows in my phonebook, there are two of every detail within them!!! Two numbers, two addresses etc.
The reason is that it is showing that I have two identical Google Accounts set up but under Accounts and Sync there is just the one.
Anyone know how to figure out this rather irritating problem!!??
Paul.

Yeah... same here.. Damn irritating...
also would be glad about a solution. Ive already tried to filter either Google or Phone Contacts, but this doesn't have any effect.
I use to have this problem on 1.6
I basically, backed up my contacts to memory card which created a .vcf. When the phoneook showed the contacts twice, delete them all and import from vcf.
This would solve the issue for me.
I'm syncing my contacts from Google though. These aren't imported from vcards.

Think I may have solved it!!!
In a contact with duplicates, click "Edit", click on the menu button and then click "Separate". This will remove the duplicate, and it then mysteriously disappears!
Unfortunately you will then have to click menu again and "Join" if you want it to link back up with Facebook contacts.
Hope this helps.
I just use MyPhoneExplorer

Yes I agree. I dont think the fault is with SE. I think it is fromthe Google Contacts merging process to remove duplicates. I think it keeps them hidden normally but somehow its showing on the phone?
Still a few hidden duplicates in there somewhere... removed with Contact Analyzer 2. Quick and easy.

The thing is ... synced dublicates don't come only from Google (aka Gmail) but also may come from Facebook as well.
And my question is , what if I DO want them to be merged so I can view a full detailed card of each of my contact with Facebook status , email , Facebook picture etc. but I don't want to have dublicate mobile number? I can't proccess the hidden-synced-from-facebook contact card just the one that I have saved , hope I'm not confusing you.
I had the same problem too at first.. so I factory restarted.. and just synced my facebook, twitter and gmail instead. The doubles I think came from my sonyericsson sync. ANOTHER THING IS, click the button on the upper left on the contact list, then click show contacts on facebook and twitter only.. I hid the Timescape facebook and timescape twitter

Hm ... can't quite figure out what you mean. Care to elaborate?
So I recently upgraded to the SGS 2 from an Infuse...and when I set up Facebook sync on that phone I was able to select whether I wanted to add ALL facebook friends, or just the ones that were already in my contacts... With the SGS 2 I wasn't given that option, so now I have like 300 extra people in my Contacts list that I will never call, and a good number of them don't even have phone numbers... So is there a way to filter which friends are synced?
Same problem here....

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I synced all my accounts yesterday and it was working great for about 3 hours and then it tells me "sync is experiencing problems right now" What is happening? Is there a fix for this?
Hello everybody,
first I want to thank you for all the great instructions and FAQs, they really helped a lot.
However, I finally bought myself an Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 and flashed it yesterday with the Resurrection 1.8.1 ICS ROM (which is really amazing). But I am experiencing an issue for which I couldn't find a solution.
After synchronizing the S2 via MPE with Outlook, and saving the contacts only on the phone they disappear after a while. But not the contacts which are linked to an online account (Facebook etc).
I think this issue was also raised in [Rom](M5)[Pitch Black](tabletUİ)[AOKP-B35][04/05]Resurrection Remix ics v1.8.1[4.0.4] (page 2546):

I think he meant when you go to the Contacts app, then open menu > more > display options, you can choose various options here. Under the "select contacts to display" heading, if under phone, nothing is checked, then it will not display any local phone contacts. See if they are all un-checked here.
EDIT: Oh, you're on Resurrection Remix, which is an ICS ROM. Could be slightly different for you. But the idea is the same.

Your are right if I uncheck everything no contacts are seen.
But if I want to view the contacts I saved on the phone (phone-only, unsynced contact), I have to show "All contacts", but after some time these contacts disappeared.

I disabled all synchronization except Google calendar, then I also disabled the synchronisation with Contact-sync.
But still the contacts are deleted. The only contacts which are left are either synced with HaxSync or Whatsapp.
Does it mean I cannot leave any contacts which are not synced with something?
It should be possible to leave some contacts on the phone itself?!

That's very weird. I can save a new contact that is "phone only" and it displays just fine, and is never synched to my Google account. (though, I really don't understand why people don't like synching to Google. It's like automatically backing up your Contacts online. What's not to like?)
Can you post some screenshots maybe of your display settings with all the settings expanded?
Just save all contacts to SIM memory, not in Phone memory.

I was talking about display settings from your contacts app, like I was suggesting in post 4.
For me, (I'm on GB still) I open contacts, menu, more, display options, and expand out phone. I have everything checked here.
I don't know what it looks like on ICS, as I'm not on ICS... but if I can see screenshots of a similar screen, I may be able to help you. You may not have that set of contacts set to display.
EDIT: I got a hold of a work colleague's i9100 who has ICS installed on it, and found the menu steps...
Ok, so on ICS, it's a bit different. From the Contacts app, hit menu, contacts to display, customize, then expand out phone. Are all the checkboxes here checked?

If I check all of them I have ca 150contacts, but after I have synced it with MPE I usually have over 500.
After some time (or a sync with an account I guess) the contacts decline only to the contacts which are synced with an account.
Currently, I have one possible solutions in mind which is however not satisfying for me:
1. Syncing all contacts with Google.

If I click on "Contacts to display" the options of the first Screenshot show up. So there is no "Phone" option
I just created a new contact which is then included in the googlemail account and then shown as "phone" and other shown as "connections".

Hmm... so it sounds like it is an issue specifically with this ROM. You may want to inquire in the ROM thread to see if anyone else using this ROM is able to get "Phone" or "SIM" contacts to show up in the contacts app.
Hello.
So yesterday strange thing happened. I took my phone, and noticed that it has wrong photos for some of the contacts. I looked deeper, and found out that all Google photos disappeared.
For example. There is a contact, which is synced with Google Contacts. Google Contacts has a photo uploaded, which was the one used in my phone as the main contact photo. This contact also has Facebook, Skype, Google+ and other social network linked to it. When I try to set the default photo in contact setting, there is no option to select Google Contacts photo, which was there earlier.
I checked Google Contacts, if photos are still there - and they are.
I tried restarting phone, deleting some extra files (couldn't start Image Gallery, because there was not enough space. Eventually I had some major problems with my SD card yesterday, but it seems, that they are gone now), stopped Contacts app, and cleared its data.
I'm out of ideas as to how to fix this.
I'm on XWLSE for Ukraine.
Exactly the same thing happened to me today. Apart from manually putting photos back on the phone's contact app or restoring from a backup I don't have a solution.

It does not help. It was among the first things I tried. I tried disconnecting other accounts from a particular contact to see if something will change, but it did not.
I wonder if I am not the only one with such problem, and it happened yesterday - maybe or was caused by some application update, which happened yesterday? For example Skype.

Decided to play with contacts a bit more. unlinked all of the other accounts such as skype, facebook, etc. - did not help.
Then I went to contacts.google.com and reused the same pictures for those contacts that I set them for long time ago.
And that fixed the problem.
I then decided to sync my contacts with facebook (emails) and that took me half a day to figure out how to do it correctly.
Now, I reconnected skype and facebook accounts, but for some reason I don't see some of the Skype/Facebook contacts in the list. They are not linked with my google contacts for the same people, and I can't find it in the list. Strange things happen..

Today all the photos disappeared again. I'm frustrated.

On my Galaxy Note 2 exactly the same happens, maybe a week now. After I have restarted my phone, all my contact photos were gone, but not from gmail. I had to clear cache for contacts and contacts memory to load photos again, but after some time they were gone again.
This happend to me about 4 times. Now I think Skype is causing this. If I do not start it, everything looks OK for 2 days now. Before, after phone restart, I have manually started Skype and after some short time contact photos were gone. Perhaps you could test that on your phone.

Same problem here. Deleting the google account was the only thing that helped -- for two days. The pictures even "survived" Skype synchronisation.
Two days later: same problem again.

I guess two days later Skype updated their app, and it happened again.
Here is the proof that it is happening because of Skype:

No, it happened definitely BEFORE I downloaded the update - and exactly two days after I reactivated the syncrhronisation option in Skype.
AFTER downloading and installing the latest version the contacts disappared, reappeared, disappeared and reappeared again (maybe the regrouping of the contacts in google helped the reappearing but I think the last time they disappeared/reappeared magically I haven't changed any settings).
It is definately Skype on my phone. I had it turned off for some days, yesterday I had to make a call with Skype and my contact photos were gone again. Turned off Skype, cleared contacts cache, synced google and everything is ok again.
same thing happened to me today
Any ideas How to fix it?
