Hello all, greetings from your friendly neighborhood newb! In following the edicts set forth by the XDA PTB, I was attempting to solve on my own a minor problem with my gallery when I encountered a much more serious problem that seems to be getting progressively worse with every action I take. I don't dare try anything else on my own. I've tried Google searches with "xda i777..." in front to no avail. I apologize if the answer if it there and I just haven't found it. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.
I'm on AOKP/N.E.A.K./UCPLC5
A few days ago, I noticed the gallery icon on my home screen wasn't working, but I was still able to access the gallery through appsorganizer, which is the primary way I access apps, so I wasn't concerned. Then I couldn't play downloaded videos, etc. Long story short, my phone won't play downloaded, streaming, or previously recorded videos in the gallery, browser, skyfire, YouTube, it third-party apps. -switched launchers to test gallery (icon on desktop was there, but said "app not found.")
-reflashed gapps.zip
-factory reset/wipe cache then flash gapps.zip
-restore nandroid backup, soft bricked phone
-tried to restore more recent backups, found one that worked on the third try (got a couple "error while restoring /system")
-gallery opened, videos played, pics weren't there ("no external storage found")
-restored most recent nandroid to make sure pics weren't gone (in retrospect, plugging it into the computer or using a file manager would have been better method)
-tried to restore previous nandroid, and got

dont think you can restore a GB nandroid from ICS. flash back to GB, then try your nandroid.
Or possibly the file got messed up?

I'm pretty sure you can, but I also applaud this guy for the amount of detail he put in his post. Even though I don't have an answer for him he did everything he should have before posting.

yea I wasnt sure on that one. but would make sense as different kernals, different recovery.
Always best to use the same recovery/kernal to restore, as you did the backup with.

Hmm...I have tried several different kernels, all were ICS-based. I wouldn't even know which one to flash for which nandroid. I'll keep that in mind for future reference though.

for future reference? you give up?
If your nandroid is from a GB kernel, then flash a GB kernel, just need the kernel, boot into recovery and attempt to restore.
Thats what I would do to narrow down the backup being messed up.
I believe this may be a problem with touch recovery nandroids versus non touch. I remember reading about that somewhere, anyone confirm?

Hello guys, first I will like to thank all of you for supporting the forum and for helping me a lot. I been trying by far do the list below and I cant get it to work correctly in more then 20 attempts and Im afraid I will totally brick my vibrant.
Done Procedures;
I have ROOTed the Phone
BackUp all my files using Titanium
Flashed ClockWorkMod with Rom Manager
Flashed with ROM Bionix V 1.3.1
Delete Cache and Dalvik...
Rebooted system
At that point everything is good but once I install a kernel I start having problems with the SD recognition by PC and Installing or un-installing apps to device
Any tips or step by step how should do to install Bionix 1.3.1 with kernel Tigers Blood with Voodoo sound and colors without a problem?
or maybe to install Axura with out been so lagging.
Any reason for not testing Trigger, with OverStock 2.2?
Try trigger, or a 2.2.1 port. Pne of those may work faster.

I will try this mate and report back. I just did an back up and now lets just see how this setup does it for me. All I want is a good theme ROM, fast and stable, Honestly I loved the Axura ROM but is to lagging for me for some reason.
Bionix is great but I have the same problem with all the roms I install. When the USB is not detected then is the apps cant be install or un-install.
Will try this one as I havent yet and besides it gives me more experience nothing to loose.

OMG here we go again, I think Im doing something wrong. I have the same issue as the more same I do like the How to's state I have the problem with installing and un-installing soft. When i even try to restore my back up for apps from Titanium it wont let me since all the apps stay like computing. I think is something wrong with the apps system or something.
I havent flashed yet the kernel.
I will try to install the ROM again
Not to sound rude, but did you follow the instructions in the noob guide on the proper way to backup, flash and restore?
Perhaps you should just ODIN back to stock and start over if you have.
Let me know if I can help, try and be detailed in your posts though... that last one, I really have no clue what you were trying to say.
Odin root cwm flash...... I hope your only flashing one thing at a time... Not rom+kernel+theme+ boot animation or somthing wildly stupid

I really love this ROM looks great and very smooth. I will use ODIN and go back to stock then I will root and then will flash with CWM and comeback here for some tips. I want to get this right for the first time at least.

Ok, Im done, I have installed the ROM and let it sit for 10 mins at least then rebooted. What step should I do now to flash a kernel like Tiger blood or OverStock.
Or what will be the next step other then configuring the login for google?

I did used the ODIN to Stock Flash my phone and then one out a time after reboot ect...
you may want to stay stock trigger for awhile and test it out.
when ready, download overstock 2.2, move it to sdcard/, reboot to CWR, install from zip (like a rom), after you flash it, reboot.... you'll notice a new splash screen for overstock, all done.

Ok, I have seen enough of this. lol I so sad to see how easy this is but frustrated when I get problems like the one I still have. Everything was great until I started installing the apps from the Titanium back up i made. It did installed about 15 apps but after those been installed successfully it just got stocked loading and it wont install any more apps or even un-install. Cant even install apps from the market.
What is wrong with this thing, is very stressful try and try and get the same result on 4 different ROMS I have tested already. I really hate to ask for help as I like to read and try it for myself so I can about a new hobby.
But this one is biting my hand very hard. Can you please tell me ehat can I do in this case mate to trouble shoot this?

Something I have done a bit different is that I have put the files in separate folders for more organize.
Like for sample; at sd_root/ I have a folder name Download which it have sub-folders that look like this tree below

-Kernels/
-Metamorhp Mods/
-Misc Mods/Apps
-Modems
-Mods
-Roms
-Themes
Do you think that will be a problem by not having the Files at the root location at SD?
When you are restoring your titanium back ups, are you only restoring apps? I mean, are you restoring system data too? You don't want to restore system data, and only restore apps. Sometimes restoring system data from previous roms can cause problems.
If this still doesn't help, you might just want to redownload all your apps, and then make a backup. Sounds like your issue is linked to titanium back up.

That makes sence!! I will load the ROM again and start over and see how it goes installing just the apps. I was restoring the apps and data
If it doenst help I will continue your suggestion to install the apps one by one NOT from the Titanium as it was back up from a different ROM.

stay away from restoring system data when flashing roms. Just the apps with the app data. Hope this helps man. If not, let's go over the entire order of what you are doing and we will figure out what is going on.

Ok here goes to nothing. I have dont everything correctly like the Guide's stating and everything works great at first but them it just stop working the whole file system apparently. Is just works great and after few app installs it just fail. When I go to check the files from the File management it just say Computing instead of loading and give the file size info ect....
What can it be I dont have a clue as I have search the whole forum and I dont see this problem posted by any other. Its just wont install, un-install or even cant stop any app from working.

When backing up with Titanium, its okay to back up user apps and their data. As far as system data, Titanium has it sorted by what is and isn't safe to restore. Green entries are all good, don't back up any entries with red text.
This is how I've been backing up stuff since before 2.2 dropped, and I've never run into any strange issues.
Just a shot in the dark, but it might be a bad sd card, or just needing a format. Try backing up all your sd files on your computer, and format your sd card and see if that helps. I had some funky stuff going on with my phone, and it went away after I did that.
Ive been spending way to much time researching my problem and my wife is really mad at me. Basically at this point i would be happy to just manually extract data for about 10 apps from a nandroid that wont restore. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Ok, now that I am at computer, heres my story. Prior to flashing the gingerbread leak, I backed up using Titanium Backup and made a Nandroid backup. Somehow, all the files backed up in my PREVIOUS 2 backups on titanium backup where all 0kb-10kb, so they were completely borked for some reason. Some old backups of apps that I have since uninstalled still remained and those seem ok.
Prior to reading about the SD card failures with the gingerbread leak, I backed up my SD card to my computer. Only 1 error came up during the backup about a file with a name that was too long. I clicked on ignore and finished the backup. About 1 hour later my SD card fried.
I used a spare sd card, and transfered my clockwork mod folder and a few other folders to it. I then ODIN a DL09 stock image, flashed the newest Clockword mod 3.xx via odin, flashed UKB 2.0, then flashed PBJ -50 recovery/kernel (which was what I had when I made the backup) and tried to restore it. When I try to restore it hangs somewhere in the data restore portion saying CACHE. I saw it flash cache a few times during the restore, so I am not sure why it hangs on that one in particular. I know that the cache image file is only 16.5kb so I dont know if that has something to do with it.
I then installed the newest IMNUTS recovery since I heard there were problems restoring the the PBJ recovery, and it seems to hang in the same spot.
At this point, I have a few of my old programs back, but most force close.
My main goal here is to just extract some gamesave progress and a few other pieces of data (I can redownload basically all the apps I need), run clean until a better gingerbread leak comes along, then use titanium backup to backup what I have (and verify the backups and make backups of the backups )and install a better gingerbread rom.
So anyway, If i can figure out how to go into the datadata.img files, I guess I can extract the data I need and push it through ADB or ROOT EXPLORER? Should that work?

There are computer applications that can read and explore image files, or .img files, and the file systems within image files. Your best bet would be software like that, that could open, edit, and explore image files. I dont know the names of any software like that, even though I have come across some before, but im sure you could turn up some results with the query "image file editor," or ".img file editor." From there you're just have to feel your way through.. Try similar queries if those don't turn up what you need, etc. If you got an app that could explore image files, then you could get your .apk files from /data/app folder, and any other data you might need from /data/data, if its just user apps you're wanting to restore.

Well I'll go ahead and point you to the right direction, or what I'd imagine should work for your needs. You'll need unyaffs, I'm assuming you're on windows so this here would be the right one for you http://www.box.net/shared/1eighqsh4s. Now take the data.img from your clockwork backup on your sdcard, drag and drop it onto the unyaffs.exe, it should unpack right there into a crapload of files. Navigate to the /data folder and find the ones you want to keep (they should be listed by the package name for the apps, "com.blah.asfkje.etc" rather than the name of the app so keep that in mind when looking for what you want), then adb push (root explorer would be fine too) the folders into your phone where they should be.

Did you happen to try the nandroid Advanced Restore option, and select Data only? If not, it might be worth a shot. If it gets far enough, you might try wiping after the restore, and before booting up.
I always wipe my cache/Dalvik before I backup, to try to avoid conflicts with possible future ROMs. Something to think about, anyway.

i did try the nandroid advanced data only option and it hung at what seemed to be the exact same point.
Hey everyone!
I have run into a little snag with my Galaxy Note... I just rooted and flashed CWM Touch Recovery to it last night by following the thread listed here. I have a Canadian version of ICS on the Rogers network. So this evening, i decided to try to run a backup within CWM, and I ran into a small problem. As the backup ran, it went through a good majority of the process, then once it got about half way through the "data" portion of the backup, an error popped up telling me there was a problem with the backing up of the data. My question is, is it necessary for that portion to complete for the image to be viable? Is the data portion just my apps? And would the rest of the image still be ok, if i want to use it? Because if the image is still whole, minus the apps, i can live with that. I don't have a problem reinstalling everything.
CWM version is 5.5.0.4 and I am using Rogers stock ICS OTA updated ROM.
***Edit I got a back up done thru the "back up to internal sd card", instead of the "backup" option.
I held out using cwm for longer than most simply because I was used to it and have it on a number of other android devices....After finally making the jump to TWRP, I would highly recommend it.
It does basically the same job with a nice GUI...and it's super fast! Backups and flashing are a breeze.
Give it a try...you can always flash back...but you won't
If the backup had an error pop up I would not use that. Delete it and either a) try again or b) flash twrp and make your backup there. You can also give your backup a name with twrp. Quite a nice, understated feature.

CWM backup fails if you have more than 4gb of photos, music, video. You possibly reached that limit.
The pictures and music and such wasn't the issue. I guess it turned out my sd card was just a hair over the needed space availability. Thanks

I had the exact same experience if I had known how TWRP worked I would never have even started using CWM
Anyone know why I can't do a nandroid backup? Every time I try it gives me an error creating MD5 checksum. Currently I'm on AOKP M1 with the built-in kernel which includes CWM 6.0.1.5, but I don't think I've ever gotten it to work with any JellyBean ROM. I'm still using my stock class 2 card and I still have 9gb free space.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you trying to restore a older nandroid from before the recent partition change? If so, then it won't work. If not then I believe I remember seeing a thread about correcting an md5 error with a nandroid, but I don't have a link for you, sorry. Try to do a search.
I personally don't use nandroids because it backs up system data which in a way defeats the purpose of doing a complete data wipe (which I do often before installing new roms). I simply use TiBu to restore all my apps and just spend 5-10 minutes or so fixing the system settings, then I'm good to go.
I'm not restoring a previous nandroid backup; I'm actually trying to use it to back up my current setup. I'll try to search the issue, unless someone knows where to find it.
I may have to give TiBu another try. It's just nicer to do the nandroid because I wouldn't have to reactivate the phone or resync my accounts afterwards. Basically if I want to try a different ROM and I don't like it I could easily go back to the previous ROM with all my settings and layout.

You have to reactivate the phone when you flash a rom? Yeah I guess I can see how that would be annoying. I've never had to do that before, however I do have to sign into google every time (doesn't really bother me)
I always make it a habit to reactivate after flashing a new ROM if I also do a data wipe. Otherwise I can't receive calls or texts.
I wonder if the failing backup is because of the larger system partition?

Try a older version of cwm...perhaps 6.0.1. Back when ics was first dropped cwm 5 had similar issues. There is a way to fix it, ill see if i can dig it up for ya.

Fix CWM 5.x Nandroid Backup
Let's just say you did what I did today, and did a backup, flashed another ROM, then tried to restore back to the nandroid you just made. Didn't work did it. Come to find out, I wasn't watching the backup, and it fails to generate an MD5 sum. I did a little searching to find out what to do, and I found the following steps (not my work...thanks goes to "desmail" for sharing this).
To fix this is assuming you did not change the folder names and let Clockworkmod create them.*
Code:Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 mismatch!
- Plug your phone to the computer
- Open a Terminal and type:
Code:adb devices
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2011-06-29.20.22.53
# rm nandroid.md5 (Probably will fail - for me, the file was never there to begin with...this is fine)
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
# exit
****Make sure you change "2011-06-29.20.22.53" to the name of your backup folder*****
- Re-run the restore and everything should be fine.
You will most likely need the Nexus S ADB drivers to accomplish this.
I'm trying to set up my girlfriends S3, but I have an issue.
When on stock rom, I can see the titanium backup folder with all the backups. In fact all the folders are there, SMS backups, images etc.
Since going to Cm10.1, the folders are gone. I used droid explorer to see if I've missed it. I made a folder in Cm10 called tester.
It appears 3 times now. And I have no idea where all my other files are. It's like it's blank.
But, if I restore back to stock, it's all there. Annoying.
I only installed 1 custom ROM. From what I know, you have to wipe your phone completely before the flashing process. I have smooth ROM installed on my nexus 7, works perfectly!
So I THINK if you want to install a custom ROM the right way, you have to wipe anyway..

The thing is, this worked before. I had a slight problem finding the files, but I have installed CM before on this, and never had this issue.
I could copy the files to my PC, wipe the phone and copy them back, but if I have to restore to the stock backup I made, it's going to break a lot of things surely?

Don't feel stupid. It is simple, but only when you know about it. Caught many of us out this did!

It worked great. But there is one issue. Titanium backup works great, but if I connect my phone to PC, the storage is the blank set of folders. Gallery cannot find any pictures either. I've followed the instructions to the letter.
If I open File Manager, it shows me the 0 directory full of my files as it should, but on my PC or in the gallery it finds nothing but empty folders.
Try wiping data on the gallery app, in case something was restored from titanium perhaps.
I don't connect to a Windows PC regularly myself, so I'm not sure about that one. Have you rebooted since?

Wiping gallery data did the trick, thanks. Not sure why connecting to the pc shows empty folders.
It means I Can't save my camera photos, or add new roms to install in the future. Most puzzling.
Have you rebooted?
Infact reboot the PC too, whilst not connected to each other.
Sorry, yes I have. In fact, going into recovery after following the instructions and my backups are no there. Or rather "no files found". Using CWM Recovery v6. I've also lost my sms backup files. I can't even go back to stock if I wanted to.

As per my other thread, some recoveries still use the old location /data/media (which is really poor from those recoveries). To be clear, this is the recoveries fault for not keeping up with the times.
If you needed to restore from one of those recoveries, you would need to move the clockworkmod folder back. Or you could flash Philz recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
...which has a toggle to change to /data/media/0 to pick up 4.2 locations.
So to be clear, you have not lost anything. Everything is there. I don't know what sms backup app you have, but everything should just work. The apps all look for /sdcard (so they don't need to know if it is /data/media or /data/media/0) so as long as your data is in the right place, there shouldn't be an issue.
Some of these issues you're having (forgetting recovery) could be a result of a titanium backup restore. Perhaps you need to wipe the device from recovery and get things working without data that could be skewing the truth
