Straight talk sim card - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So I got a att sim card for straight talk. I was wondering if I unlocked my phone and flashed the blaze radio and put in the tmo apns would I run on the tmo towers? I know you can get the tmo one but are they that much different?

I am on T-Mobile and generally run blaze modem, but I also tested straight talk at&t sim for a while. Here are my few obvervations -
1. I think that only at&t towers were being used by straight talk, even with blaze modem. The signal strength was different for each sim. I found at&t coverage in my area better. You need straight talk apn though, having blaze modem would make no difference. So you would need to switch apns if you swap sims (assuming you have two sims).
2. On straight talk the signal was the same regardless of the flashed modem - at&t modem or T-Mobile blaze. And again att.mvno apn was absolutely necessary.
3. However, despite the same signal strength, the blaze modem drained the battery a lot faster as compared to stock at&t ics modem. Even on wifi.
If you have T-Mobile sim card you may find top download speeds with blaze modem a lot faster. However, straight talk connection is more stable. Stability is everything. I hope you have good at&t coverage in your area as I would stick with at&t ics modem. In fact that is the best option, unless you also have a T-Mobile sim and plan to swap it sometimes. But even if you have both, please note the battery drain caused by blaze modem - may not be worth it.

So the blaze isn't stable?

Not as stable as Straight Talk. None of tmobiles modems are really perfect. Better than edge for anyone stuck on T-Mobile but not stable.

Att/tmo sim 3g on vzw version on gn2 working for anyone?

I'm on beans build 6 on a vzw version gn2 and when I pop an att or tmo sim I don't seem to get 3g, only an "H+" symbol. Phone calls work fine. The gn2 seems to known which sim is in and picks up the correct carrier and the apn info that bean included in this build does show up. Whether they are right may be a different story but I'd assume it is. I've also tried this on cleanrom se vzw 1.0 with the apn hack from the other thread and it didn't work then either with a tmo sim, same H+ symbol. Am I missing something? Does this work for others? I'm in the bay area so I know I should have good connectivity on those carriers., not sure if this phone just doesn't have the right radios for 3g on att or tmo?

H+ is hspa+ which is tmobiles 4g at the moment

Want to use ATT i717 on Tmobile LTE network. Possible?

Refer to topic. So Tmobile recently launched LTE in my area yesterday. I was wondering if there's a way to enable their network on my ATT note. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I've gotten TMobile LTE with stock settings on my unlocked, rooted (but nothing done with that) i717 in Chicago.

What radio & rom are you using?
This phone is almost two years old but you are the first person to wonder if the at&t note can work on tmobile's frequncies.
Just in case I'm wrong about you being the first one to wonder, why not try a google search?
I'll bet there's 2,000 responses.

Yes, there is. You have to be on an AT&T Rom, Carrier Unlock your I717, Use T-Mobile Sim Card, Apply T-Mobile LTE APN Settings. I think that's it in a nutshell.

Don't forget to get LTE on tmobile you must use an ATT Radio.
UCLF6 for ICS
UCMB4 or UCMD3 for JB.
Rom type doesn't matter, just radio, apn, and being in a LTE area, i717 unlocked as well.

So your phone doesn't have to be unlocked? Just rooted and flash the Modem via recovery? Just asking cause I am on at&t and experiencing signal drops frequently

You must also be unlocked for tmobile. Just adding what he forgot. There is a guide in the i717 forum for free sim unlock if it isn't by chance unlocked already.

Being as this phone is from ATT, no it wouldn't need to be unlocked to use an ATT sim.
Unlock is needed for tmobile phone/data to work on the i717.

If your trying to unlock using this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37357905 then yes flashing the tmobile modem is fine.
When it is unlocked, you can flash any radio found for the i717 in recovery and it only changes the radio.
So follow the guide to sim unlock for free. Then reflash only the radios I mentioned before. You should then have your ATT I717 unlocked for tmobile if you change out the sim card.
This won't do anything besides allow a tmobile sim card with functioning calls/data.
If you don't need this, then try a newer ATT radio that I previously detailed a few posts back.

AT&T Sim Cards are back w/Straight Talk!

Is there a way I can get my Verizon S4 to work with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM card?! Please say yes, so I can get rid of this expensive A$$ bill?!

Yes I'm using my at&t straight talk sim on the verizon s4 and it works great!
Is there anything special I have to do with my phone? When I order the sim card from straight talk it won't let me select the cdma option so, should I just select gsm as if I have a AT&T Galaxy S4?

CDMA does not use SIM cards. The S4 is a CDMA/GSM/LTE device. AT&T is a GSM network.
You might have to edit the APN settings to use Straight Talk.

The Verizon S4 is a CDMA phone AND a GSM phone. I believe they made it this way so you can go to about any other country in the world and still use your phone - or it was just cheaper to mass produce the radios with everything in it.
Anyway the only thing to change is the APN settings to
Name=Straight Talk
APN=att.mvno
Proxy=proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port=80
MMSC=http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy=mms2.tracfone.com
works perfect. However I did just find a small problem. I have flashed both cyanogenmod and Liquidsmooth AOSP ROMS and they do not work with at&t ST sim - when I call the phone it does not answer or register the call at all. Not sure what the problem is, seems like for some reason it is not registering with the at&t network. Trying to find a fix. However, the phone has worked fine with all TW based ROMS I've tried.
Ok thanks for the information but I have one more question... I am rooted with Clean Rom 1.5, do I have to unroot my phone? Will I still be able use wife tether or foxfi? I heard AT&T took foxfi away.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Oops just saw that you messaged me - yes just choose GSM. You do not have to unroot your phone but like I said in the last post - I cannot get AOSP roms to receive or make calls - data works - but not phone calls - which is rather strange and I'm sure can be fixed but nothing I have tried seems to work.
GSM is fine but in reality once you get the right LTE bands turned on, would it be better in global?

What kind of data do you see on AT&T? HSPA+? 3G? 2G?

You shouldn't need to flash to Straight Talk as the Verizon S4 already has an unlocked SIM slot and compatible radios with AT&T and T-Mobile (re-farmed markets) 3G. All you need to do is order a SIM card from them and then enter the APN information for Straight Talk and set the phone for GSM mode. The AT&T SIM card is probably a better choice since some T-Mobile markets still only use AWS for 3G which the Verizon S4 does not support.

I'm currently trying it out. I bought the AT&T compatible sim from their website, and got the APN settings directly from them. Everything seems to work ok.
From what I have read you can get HSPA+ but not LTE when using the AT&T SIM on straight talk with the verizon note 2. Also in 4.3 there is no need to root to update the APN. Otherwise it works fine.
I was thinking about switching but after doing the math my verizon ETF eats all but $40 of the savings over the next 8 months until my contract ends. Will check it out again come September.

Correct. Our phones do have have the AT&T LTE bands. And actually being able to edit APN's was opened up on 4.1.2 without rooting but the thought is still correct.
