rom manager isues after rooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everyone.this is my first post on the xda forum and i would like to apologize for any inconveniences as in asking a question which might be common.i did search the forum but couldnt find an answer.anyway
i just rooted my galaxy s2 I9100 using method 1 of the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
now once i rooted my phone i got superuser which was cool but i didnt get busybox which was strange as it was supposed to be included
anyway just downloaded busybox ,rom manager and titanium backup.which seems to work
but as for rom manager ,i tried to flash CWM using rom manager, to backup my stock rom.
and it appears that rom manager has downloaded CWM recovery.but for some reason i cant boot in CWM recovery ,the phone boots in stock recovery.
what should i do as i would like to backup and add new roms.
and by the way im running on ICS 4.0.3

I had the same problem when I first rooted, downloading ClockWorkMod Recovery from ROM Manager, and still having the same stock recovery. Your best bet is to download the correct kernel for your phone for CF-Root (created by the ingenious Chainfire). This is what I used to root my phone, and this gives you root, busybox and a working custom recovery, and it keeps your phone's kernel as stock as possible. Give it a go and it should work.
Once rooted, before flashing any ROM's, back up your phone in the recovery to your external storage, and also download EFS Pro from XDA, and back up your EFS Folder. If you damage the folder, no phone calls or internet for you, and a damaged IMEI, so recovering it is a pain! After these are done, carry on flashing and enjoying using your phone!
Here is the link to Chainfire's thread which explains everything: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Here is the link to EFS Pro, which is a great tool by the way!: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546

thanks for your the help.i appreciate it but i was trying to find a way to use rom manager instead of of Chainfire's CWM manager.i just found a folder in my internal storage titled ''clockwork mod''.it contains a file called recovery-update.zip
is there a way to get rom manager to work.i have seen a few videos where people used rom manager on the galaxy s 2 but i have no idea how.
finally do you know what is the difference between clockwork mod and the custom version of Chainfire?

I have used ROM Manager too, but it caused me only problems. When I posted it here I was told it's not compatible with SGS2. Since then I am avoiding it and no more similar problems.

Stay away from ROM manager caused me nothing but problems. What do you need it for as there are always alternatives.

Just stay away from ROM Manager, I have no idea why it doesn't work on the S2, but the CF-Root method is flawless anyway. And there is no difference between ClockworkMod Recovery and a “custom recovery," both are the same as they are different to the stock ‘3e' Android Recovery you get with your phone. Don't forget to back your phone up and use the EFS Pro tool. The amount of people damaging their EFS folder is astounding! Hope this helps!

ROMMANAGER -E:failed to verify whole-file signature- problem

Hi I am very new in the android world. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. I would like to prove custom ROMS and I have followed a lot of steps to prepare my device for this. I have download ROMMANAGER to backup my actual ROM (I would like to get it). I have flashed my recovery with ROMMANAGER and when I am going to do my backup my phone restart and get the following error:
-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
My phone has this elements:
Android Version: 2.3.4
Version: I9100XXKI1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 [email protected]#2
Compilation: Gingerbread.XWKI4
Please, I need some help to solve it because I can go into the next step and I would like to prove a lot of things in my new phone.
Thanks in advance!
You could try to install cwm with cf-root but this should be in Q&A section

Any amount of searching would have told you that you can't install CWM recovery with ROM manager on the I9100, therefore you have stock (3e) recovery.
FORUM RULES
1. Search before posting.

Perhaps I have written this thread in the wrong place, but (I know that is difficult to belive) but I have search for a time for my problem solution and I haven´t be able to find a thread that I can use to help me (I say that I can´t find, I am sure that is my fault).
So, I am very sorry if this disturb someone, please forgive me.
In another way, a little help with my problem??
What means "you can't install CWM recovery with ROM manager on the I9100, therefore you have stock (3e) recovery.
What can I do to get my rom backup?
Thanks in advance!
If I read your OP right, it seems you have installed Rom Manager on your phone in the first instance, without rooting it first. Am I correct ?
If that's the case, it won't work. Rom Manager only works on rooted phones, normally to do this you'd probably use CFRoot to root your phone. However, if you root your phone using CFRoot, this will install CW Recovery, which as Oinky has quite rightly pointed out is not compatible with Rom Manager. Rom Manager tends to break CW Recovery.
So what you need to do is root your phone. And you need to decide which method you want to use to root your phone. If you really want to use Rom Manager you'll probably need to use Zegrush or SuperOneClick (anyone feel free to jump in & say/correct me if either of these installs CW or won't work for whatever reason) to root your phone rather than CFRoot.
On the other hand, if you're happy to go without Rom Manager and want a quick and easy way to root your phone, then CFRoot is the go. This will give you CW Recovery, and all you have to do in order to flash roms & kernels/make backups & restore is to boot into CW Recovery.
As Oinky has suggested, you definitely have a lot of reading to do, do a search for CFRoot, Zergrush & SuperOneClick on here.

Thanks MistahBungle for your answers. Perhaps I didn´t describe the problem very well... Sorry! Anyway, I have rooted my phone with "Unlock root" aplication.
After this, I backup my efs folder, and my aplications with titanium backup.
Now is the moment I would like to backup my actual ROM. For this I would like to use ROMMANAGER (because is the suggestion of the forum I followed).
I did the recovery flash manager ok, but when I tried to do my BACKUP ACTUAL ROM my device rebooted and give me the mensage that I have told in my first post.
Thats my situation. I would like to backup my ROM and prove another one, but if I had any problem with my SGS2 I would like to have all my backups to restore before go to the tecnichal service.
Any idea?
Thanks!
OK cool. I understand now
Sorry, I don't use Rom Manager so I can't help you with your problem. I rooted my phone with CFRoot & have always used CW Recovery (and Titanium/kTool) for my backups. Hopefully someone comes along soon who has experience with Rom Manager & can help you with your problem.

AS suggested, ROM manager is not compatible. Get rid of it. Flash any CF-root CWM kernel .tar with Odin.
Ie. Chainfire CF-root or siyahkernel
All problems solved and nandroid backups and restore capable.

Hi! I did it! I have installed this morning my first stock rom and my first custom rom. All works ok.
Thanks for the information.
I have a question (if I have to open another post, please tell me). I have installed one custom rom but I don´t like so much so I would like to try UltraToxic rom. I know that I have to start installing a stock rom before, and after install UltraToxic 8.2 by Odin. My question is that I don´t know if I have to install again the CF-KERNEL that I installed before when I installed my first custom rom. Is this kernerl overwritten by the custom rom kernel?
Thanks a lot !
Yes. If you install a custom rom it will overwrite your existing kernel with whatever kernel is packaged with the rom. If you really prefer the CFRoot kernel, you can reflash this over the top of whatever kernel is installed when you flash the rom (or you could flash one of the other kernels you can find on XDA). That's up to you.

Thanks for your quick answer. I will do it again. I will install again CF-KERNEL due to I don´t know very well how kernel works and if one kernel is for one specific rom, so I will recover my old kernel and then I will install again the another rom.
Could you recommend me a good rom to install? I would like your opinion, if you consider it ok.
Thanks
No, you don't "have to". Custom ROM will come with a CWM root kernel, CF-root, speedmod, Siyah, etc...
You can flash back CF-root if you wish, but don't "have to".
Just be aware that nandroid backups made with a particular version of CWM may not restore with another version. Ie. 4.xxx -> 5.xxx
Now you have root, make sure you have EFS filler backed up. Many ways to do it;
Hellcat ktool
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool
Or,
GS2 Repair
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.helroz.GSII_Repair
You'll have an expensive alarm clock if your IMEI ever gets corrupted, so store the backup on a PC too.

I have backup my efs folder from my original ROM. Do I need do it again? Do my efs folder change every time that I flash a rom?
Another question is that with CriskeloRom and UltratoxicRom I have a problem with Titanium Backup and it is that I can´t restore every data that I have backup because in any part of the restore Titanium Backup gets into an infinitive loop and does nothing.
What could be the problem?
Thanks for this new information! This is a great forum ! Thanks for support!

No, EFS won't change unless corrupted. So you won't have to backup EFS every time.
As post above, aas general rule, don't restore system apps and data (red)., especially across different ROM and Android versions.

[Q] New SG S2 - Upgrade to ICS and stuff - Noob

Greetings!
I'm a noob.
I'm completely confused with upgrading to ICS, "Rooting" and installing custom ROMs.
I currently have Android 2.3.5 and some custom ROM installed (On power on a Yellow exclamation mark appears.. I think it's relevant)
In "about phone" it says the Kernel version is:
2.6.35.7-i9100xwki8-cl616395 [email protected] #2
What I'd like to eventually have is a phone (perhaps rooted) with ICS and the ability to install custom ROMS.. How on earth do I get there?
Thanks in advance!
and pardon the Noobness..
Well the yellow exclamation mark is caused by an insecure kernel. Anyway, just download Chainfire's KI8 CF-Root, and flash it through Odin. Then you will have root and Clockworkmod Recovery, and then you can flash to your hearts desire.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Doesnt the exclamation mark on the boot screen mean he is already rooted?
From what I understand your phone is al ready rooted..(triangle in boot) If yes you can flash whatever rom you want already...
You can search here there are a lot of nice roms...
If you want just ics you can flash an original rom from here You can download wherever you see 4.0.3 version. Its ics!
On the other hand if you're not rooted themadba has already answered..
This is a very good guide.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Not always. I had an insecure kernel flashed FOR root but I didn't have root yet. All the OP has to do is flash the KI8 kernel and he will obtain root.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Go check out the video tutorials at galaxys2root.com. They'll walk you step by step through everything you need for rooting and installing.
Yeah in the 'old days' you had to flash an unsecure stock kernel so an app like super one click could root. So its possible to have triangle but not root
Triangle away or a jig can clear the counter easy.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Thank's all for your replies!
According to "root checker" (an app I downloaded) my phone is rooted.
Now, if i understand correctly in order to install a rom or a new version of an OS i need to place whatever installation files on my SD card and then "reboot into recovery" and choose one of the options there (falsh from card, run zip etc.)
I have Rom Manager installed, so that can reboot into recovery.. if that's what needs to be done, that is.
That about right? Is this called "flashing"?
Do not use Rom Manager & CWM on the same SGS2.
Choose one or the other. Yes, I realise Rom Manager premium has a few more bits of functionality over the non-paid version & CWM, but if you continue to have/use both on your phone you will have problems eventually.
Rom Manager tends to either break Recovery and/or cause bootloops.

Rom manager tells me I must install The CWM in order to install roms.
Which app should I use instead? Do I need some sort of app to actually install ICS?
Whenever you want to install a rom, boot into CWRecovery. I've always done it this way & have never had a problem. If you've rooted your phone & have CWM installed, that's all you'll ever need.
Apart from the one time I thought I'd buy Rom Manager premium from the Market. Broke my recovery & put me into bootloop. Fortunately for me I do a backup whenever I make changes to my setup (flash a new rom or kernel) so I fixed it easily.
As I said, use Rom Manager & CWM on the same phone at your own risk.
ok, I uninstalled the Rom manager.
I finally figured out the Volume UP + Home + Power which allows me to boot into recovery. (very noob, remember?..)
Is there an easy way to copy something like an ICS installation file to the SDcard and run that from the recovery menu? Or must I use one of them Odin or Kies for that?
If such an "installation file" exists, where does one find it?
If you want install one of the original firmwares I posted you previously, you need Odin. Don't worry is very easy a way.. If you want other roms such as CM9 or resurrection you'll have to copy the files to sd and install them as you said from recovery..
Don't worry we were all noobs once.. These are easy procedures
And one more: you said something about kies.. You just need kits for it's divers.. You can't flash out install anything from kies.. And it's very important to close it(and every other procedure comes with it) when you are using Odin...

[GUIDE] REGAIN 100% WARRANTY from NANDROID BACKUP [WITHOUT ODIN, Stock Recovery]

Greetings xda,
I wanted to COME back to complete 100% warranty from my current Custom Rom using a stock nandroid backup, after skimming the entire SGA Forum, I couldn’t find an all-in-one thread whichs contains a guide to regain 100% warranty including stock firmware, stock recovery, Unroot. I was even told that recovering to back to a stock backup is not possible if you have used an ext4 custom ROM. So I decided to handle this on my own. I hope you find this handy.
Flashing using odin might be easier but I bought my Ace from an Arabic region and i got the JPKP9 firmware. Unfortunately ,most samsung firmware websites lack the MODEM file of the firmware. So in order to address the issue I made this guide to enable people to restore their stock roms from a nandroid backup. Hence, THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE ODIN.
Table of Contents:
A). Requirements
B). Procedure
C). Tests
D). Credits
A). Requirements:
- Samsung Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830) [rooted]
- A stock firmware backup (you might have created this before flashing roms)
- eu.chainfire.cfroot.ext4manager-1.apk*
- Clockworkmod 5 *
- Stock Recovery files *
- Unroot.zip*
*: Inside “WarrantyRegain-UsmanJ.rar” (don’t extract the .zip files)
B). Procedure:
Step 1: Download the “WarrantyRegain-UsmanJ.rar” from HERE.
Step 2: Install the eu.chainfire.cfroot.ext4manager-1.apk file which you downloaded. Run the “ext4” application you installed, it might give you an error if you are not using CF-Root but don’t mind it. Scroll down and click “Convert to rfs”. Your mobile will boot into recovery, Wait for 10-20minutes as it will change the format of System, Data and Cache partition to rfs. Once over, your mobile will restart.
Step 3:Now go to Recovery and head over to “Backup and Restore” and and restore using the stock firmware backup you have. This will take approximately 3-5 minutes. One you have finished: Reboot phone. Congratulations, you have done 60% of the warranty regain process.
Step 4: Once you have restored to Stock Firmware, it is time that you now restore to Stock Recovery. Boot into Recovery again and flash the “Stock_recovery_S5830_2.3.x._by_ingbrzy.zip” you have downloaded. Once you have successfully flashed. Go to Advanced and Reboot Recovery. Now you are in the Stock Recovery.
Step 5: Now flash the Unroot.zip file you have downloaded earlier. Once you have successfully flashed, reboot.
CONGRATULATIONS NOW YOU HAVE GAINED 100% TRUE WARRANTY: Stock Recovery, Stock Firmware and Unrooted.
C). Tests
This method is tested and proved successful on the following Custom ROMS:
- StockLite v6 by tj_droid
- CM 7.2 RC1 by vo-1 (update 26/3/12)
- Bound to work on most ROMs.
D).Credits:
- Ingrbzy: for Stock Recovery
- Gganon: for unroot.zip
- Chainfire and KPK: for ext4 support app (I extracted rfsmaker.zip from it)
- Me: For compiling this guide (Just Kidding )
Don’t Forget to hit the Thanks Button as this is my first MAJOR post on xda.

Thank you very much for posting this solution.
After being awake all night i finally was able to restore my stock nandroid backup successfully thank to you.
And yes this method is important for those people who want to go back to what they previously had, in my case i updated my brothers Ace to JB 4.2.2 which after using for a while he asked me to revert it to what he had before{gingerbread} but sadly for me i didnt take any note of what kernel or rom his phone was running at that time and more importantly he needed all his whatsapp messages and other important data.
I only knew that he got his from uk but after going to samfirmwares i was unable to understand which firmware to download due to my little mistake making me more hesitant on what to do.
Finally after searching i found your thread and was able to restore the backup within 15 min
there are no words to describe how thank full i am to you for posting this thread
Thank you very very very much

Finally after searching i found your thread and was able to restore the backup within 15 min
there are no words to describe how thank full i am to you for posting this thread
Thank you very very very much
you are the best

Hello,
My phone is not recognising in odin through download mode or in samsung kies, I have tried every possible way like changing cables, usb ports, computers, factory reset, but nothing was working, so then I installed cw9 on my samsung galaxy ace s5830i but still no success, now I want to go back to stock rom.
I had not taken any nandroid backup. Can anyone provide with a download link for the stock nandroid backup for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830I, so that I can transfer it to my sd card and restore it
Thanks

GT-s5830i is not compatible with GT-s5830 model!!! They have different SoC, if you use the s5830 files could brick your phone!
Try to install a compatible rom with the compatible odin version of your device

I cannot install with Odin as it does not detect my phone in download mode. My only other option is installing stock rom through cwm, but I dont have the necessary files for my device S5830i to install it through cwm. Can u provide me with the files? It would be of great help.
Thanks

Newbie questions before rooting

I still have a few questions before rooting my phone for the first time.
1) if i root 2.3.6 using the right kernel, Can i still install an ics custom rom like resurrection?
2) if i root stock 4.0.3 Poland version or argentinian version, final result of installing a new custom Rom is gonna be the same because it completely replace the first one?
3) what's the difference between nandroid backup and cwm way to backup custom rom? Do i need to keep my backup inside the phone in order to unbrick it tomorrow, or may i just store it on my notebook and delete it from the phone?
Thanks a lot!!

1) Rooting is just to give you access to CWM.. ergo the ability to install custom ROMS so you can install ROMS after rooting
2) When you flash a new ROM (which is rooted) then you dont have to bother about what did you did before that..
3) If i'm not mistaken CWM only allows u to do a nandroid backup.. And if u want to restore to the backup ( in ur case unbrick :silly U need to have that in ur sd card :good:
Happy rooting.. Happy flashing..
1) Follow whatever instructions the rom you're wanting to use has to the letter.
2) If you install a custom rom, then yes, obviously it will replace any stock rom you flash it over the top of.
3) A CWM backup is a Nandroid backup. It's the same thing. You can store your backups wherever you want. I have my 4 most recent Nandroids on my phone, and I have every backup I've ever done on my phone stored on my PC (and another copy on an external drive I use for backups). So I guess the question you're asking is, can I take a Nandroid backup from ages ago stored on my PC, put it on my phone & restore it. Am I right ? If that's what you're asking, the answer is yes.
Thanks. Actually i was asking in case my phone bricks after installing a new rom. I guess i won't be able to come it back to life if i don t have the backup in the phone.
And one more thing. What is efs backup. Do I also need to do it?
Thanks

Yes. The 2nd thing you should do after your root your phone (first thing is do a Nandroid backup) is to get kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Before you install another rom or kernel do both of those.
Keep a copy on your external sdcard & keep another copy on your PC. Just in case you ever need it. We get quite a few people on here every week with IMEI/EFS details gone & most don't have EFS backups.
thanks!
I forgot to ask, is there any real risk at using triangle away app? So far, is it working on any kernel? thanks

I've actually used that app a few times well (about 5) and haven't had any issues but once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle.

There will always be a risk when using anything that manupulates root access, but triangle away is quite safe, as for what kernel if works on, most kernel threads will say if it is compatiable or not, but only with ICS kernels, not GB kernels.
"...once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle."
What do you mean by that? I actually don´t need to use the app, because triangle will dissapear anyway after flashing a Kernel?

You will still have the triangle after flashing a new rom or kernel, the best way to get rid of it is triagle away, this app will also reset your flash counter.
Once you get a working CWM, let's say you're using Cyanogenmod 9 and you want to flash over the stock kernel.
You'd put the kernel file on the memory of the device (sdcard) and boot in CWM recover and flash from there and you won't get the triangle.
The triangle won't go away now if you unless you use a USB jig or the triangle away app. So get rid of the triangle now and when you want to try a new kernel flash it through CWM and the triangle won't appear. Flash a kernel through download mode and you'll get the triangle.

Fixing permissions is automatic I believe in CWM recovery. It's an option in the recovery menu. Remember to wipe data and cache (dalvik too) when flashing a next rom or else you won't be able to boot.

Thanks for the info mate
By the way, you should really just buy a USB Jig off eBay for a few quid, it resets the custom binary counter (on old bootloaders) and can also force your phone into download mode after a bad flash. Handy to have around. Also, now that you have rooted your phone, download EFS Pro (found here on XDA) and back up your EFS folder before any flashing. Lose this folder and your in serious trouble!

Hi! When rooting or flashing a custom rom or kernel, do I lose internal sd card content?
Where is the EFS folder I need to backup?
Thanks!

Rooting Galaxy S2 GT-i9100?

Guys, is there any chance of rooting the phone without flash with odin or from the mobile odin?
Serve unlock root for ICS 4.0.3?
From already thank you very much.
PS: Sorry for my English is not very good
Look at the PhilZ-CWM6 custom kernel. It can be flashed in stock recovery and includes SuperSU, root, ClockworkMod Recovery and Busybox.
It is pure stock based, and doesn't have MMC brickbug.
Thanks for responding! But there would be some way that only makes you root, without installing a modified kernel and without CWM? is that I want nothing more root access

This method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 doesn't flash a custom kernel, but do include CWM. Why don't you want CWM?

You're wrong pal, using the first method will only root your phone, no cwm nor custom kernel. its a single file u flash through stock recovery that gives you root and busybox, nothing else.
Thanks friend! Now I see it, I do not set it up yet because there is no custom rom, just want root : D

Try flashing a custom kernel through Odin on your PC. Plenty of guides on here and Google. That way you can flash cm through recovery. Keep an eye out for the kernel bug related to 4.0.4. Again lots of documentation on that too.

Thanks and one more thing, Is there any risk of getting my phone bricked during rooting part only? I mean we are not installing a firmware so why would the phone get bricked!

There is ALWAYS a risk when doing anything to your device. The level of risk is down to what you are doing and what state the battery is in etc.
As long at the rooted kernel you are flashing is compatible with the current firmware then all SHOULD be fine.

ExynosExploit by chainfire can root it. Has got a dangerous tag attached to it tho.
Stuck in bootloop
Hi,
So, this is what happened
I have a galaxy SII gt-i9100, About 5 months ago I rooted it and installed the galaxy nexus update to android 4.0.4. and everything was ok except it wasn't showing me the option to transfer via blue tooth (but that didn't bother me much). These were the things I used
1. GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_4.0.1.4
2. Odin3 v1.83
3. GT-I9100_XWKI8_insecure
4. GT-I9100_XWKI8_original
Now, yesterday I a friend had galaxy S II i9100P and he updated the firmware using kies and it had working blue tooth. I thought ok let's change it to that and my blue tooth might work also. I was at work and I (in a hurry) tried rooting it with only Odin. No backup, No Clockwork  nothing. ( and "Now it's stuck at the startup screen. I can go to download mode and recovery mode but it has samusg recovery not clockwork. I don't know what to do and in need of help. I'd really appreciate a quick response. (hoping to get atleast the mass data back )
These were the only 2 things used.
1. Odin3 v1.83
2. I9100JPLPH_I9100OJPLPF_PAK

ok, the galaxy nexus update? you mean Jelly Bean or Supernexus / chamaleon?
I think that you've installed a stock ROM over a custom ROM and that's why you are stucked at the logo.
read a little bit about flashing because you are up for it.
Learn about SD card data when flashing and follow a tutorial to flash stock ICS 4.0.3 via odin thru Download mode.
Also make sure to flash a safe kernel so you wont get the brick bug (see warning post sticked in the general section).
I don't know what to put here...any ideas?
fixed.Thanks
