Just a question for anyone who ever used a hspa+ device. How fast is if compared to LTE in your experience? I've been extremely unhappy with sprint so far and don't see myself with them after this year so I want to know how fast the networks on aa&T or t–mobile are compared to it. Is it a lot slower?

I'm came from T-Mo and think they are by far the worst major carrier out there. I had a G2x and got 9mbps down once (in Kansas City) and never more than 1mbps up. My LTE results have been around 11-12 down and 6-11 up so far, but certainly difficult to find. I left T-Mo mainly because I spent 50 hours/week in a major metro area with zero coverage. I'm sure it varies by area and personal experiences of course, but I'm patient enough to wait out the full LTE roll-out.
I've never had AT&T so I can't comment on them.

The 3G network is terrible at the moment, mostly because of the "Network Vision" which includes adding LTE and "improving" 3G. It will get better (a lot better actually) but it will take some time.
HSPA+ isn't really "4G". It's kinda like 3.5G lol. LTE in theory should be faster up and down.
I know it depends on where you live I just wanted a little comparison. Odds are I will get LTE before the end of the year so I don't want to go from something incredibly fast to super slow. If it's like half the speed I can deal with it.
HSPA is quite fast in the iteration that tmobile uses, but its also not as efficient with its use of spectrum as LTE is, making it a spectrum hog.
One company I consult for provides T-Mobile phones for employees. The Galaxy S2s they have regularly get 15-20Meg down, 2-5Meg up. This is in Plano, TX.
Considering today us the first time I've gotten LTE on my EVO LTE, and the best I could get was 8/8 (up/down), speed on HSPA+ is currently better.
I am pretty sure on AT&T if the phone is LTE it is also HSPA+........but don't quote me on that

who are you switching from? does it have to be at&t ? My atrix battery isnt bad, but i despise at&t
I sometimes go from H+ --> E --> no signal at odd times here in Raleigh, NC...
It depends on your location !!! some area's are good for AT$T and some are really BAD !
I'd pick up a Galaxy S II personally, I am fairly sure it's coming to T-mobile, Verizon, and AT&T so if you have T-mo or Verizon I'd recommend that.
It really out classes the Atrix from top to bottom, the only thing it lacks are docks (worthless anyway), qHD (But the sAMOLED screen more than makes up for it) and Tegra 2..although Tegra 2 is actually quite limited compared to the Galaxy II's chipset.
Why so many AT&T haters? I've been with them since it was Cingular years ago and I don't see any issues that people don't have with other providers. I think we are all looking for perfect world scenarios and we just aren't quite there yet. As for the Atrix, love mine!

I was with t-mobile till February 2011 and was sick of them because of the ****ty reception in San Diego in the area I live in. It was supposed to be "4G" but I was constantly on EDGE. I had friends on AT&T and they had great reception and on 3G faster or similar speeds as me on T-mobile with "4G". I switched and I am happy so far.
Try to find out if you have good reception in the area that you need it in (ask friends on AT&T etc.). T-mobile and AT&T can be quite spotty in coverage and reception.

Verizon = Faster network (Only carrier with substantial LTE rollout already), larger coverage map, and unlimited data plans.
AT&T = Slower network, no LTE for at least another year, 2 years for smaller markets, capped data plans.
The choice is simple.

The battery life is amazing. But as always, it will also depend on your personal usage of the phone. If you are running speedtests all day then the battery life will be crap, for example.
the 3G will entirely depend on AT&T's network in your area. Look it up online and you should have a better gauge on how their network works in your area. Entirely subjective. In my area, it is amazing and I have no complains. It has been stable for me and the few times it "goes out" is when I am in the mountains or somewhere with weak cell signal anyways.
I just switched from Verizon to ATT about 3 weeks ago. The only thing that I miss is the amazing data speeds on my thunderbolt. I have had no issues with ATT and the service is not that much different in my area. If they are alright in your area I don't see a reason not to go for it.
The Atrix is a great phone, compared to my thunderbolt there is no comparison. The battery on the atrix lasts around 4 times longer then the thunderbolt and is built a lot better. Its a lot faster as well.
I have Verizon now but it cost 178 for two phones and if I switch to at&t it will be 131.98 or T-Mobile it would be 139

They told me the same thing! when i bought the phone i specifically asked them and they said yes
forget it, they meant hspa+, this phone doesn't have a lte radio, no matter who says anything
HSPA can do up too 14.4mps and thats why they care calling it 4g even though 4g originally was data service of 100mb or better. The Atrix like stated above DOES NOT have the LTE radio no madder what ATT tells you.
Im not even on true HSPA in my area but I do know one thing, ever since the update that unlocked the upload I have seen 6mb down and 1.2mb up. I almost always see between 3-5mb now and I'm not even in a 4g area.
The good thing about HSPA is it uses the same 3g towers and technology so battery is not affected. I guess the verizon guys on LTE are seeing very horrible battery life compared to running 3g. Thats why those Thunderbolts get such bad battery life. We get faster speeds without hurting the battery.

There are multiple versions of HSPA - the Atrix can do 14.4 mbps on download, but other phones can do 7.2 or 21 or even 42 mbps. The Atrix will not support LTE ever. It does not have an LTE modem and is not upgradeable to one. ifixit's teardown showed that the Atrix has a Qualcomm MDM6200, which is not an LTE modem (http://www.qualcomm.com/news/releas...ls-new-roadmap-gobi-connectivity-technologies).
The best download speeds i've found in my area are about 7.1 down. Pretty darn good....not consistent at all though.
It also seems like att is coaching employees to tell customers that the Atrix will do LTE.
Im starting to wonder if they are going to market their hspa+ as a synonym for LTE.
Thanks for the responses and the link. Pretty clear att is continuing to lie about the subject.
If any of you are curious I encourage you to call ATT tech support and ask them about LTE and the Atrix. Post your responses here.

Lets be realistic about this:
HSPA and LTE aren't that far apart from each other in the current state. Theoretically speaking, HSPA should be VERY close to LTE speeds once they fully roll out. HSPA is "4G" like whenever that will be fully rolled out to everyone. I'm sure there are a ton of you that are going to give out all of these statistics and what not to disprove me. The fact is, those numbers are all in "theory" and the fact of the matter is that we will never see those speeds....EVER, unless you live next to a cell tower.
I personally think that if we get 14mb speeds, we're damn good. The point is do we really need all of that speed?...not really...it's not that big of a deal. The phone is pretty bomb, the features are amazing.

I really don't think they are training their employees to say the phone is LTE capable. AT&T knows what the phone can and cannot do (its even printed on the box)
It sounds like you've just spoken with people who either didn't get all the facts or don't know the difference... not everybody is nerdy like us on all this HSPA+ LTE stuff

The equipment is up already so it'll be fast. That's the last worry I have. I just hope we don't go through a year of only lte netbooks & data cards before we see the phones.

ehhh lets not start a debate here, but LTE is superior to Wimax, which is why all the major carriers are using it and or about to. (sprint)
The inherent flaw with Wimax is the frequency it uses, BUT isnt dependant on Sprint. Clearwire modems have the same trouble penetrating buildings and stuff like that because of the high frequency. TRUE wimax could be theoretically better, but LTE is more practical in real world usage because of the lower frequency it uses, which is better when it comes to range and penetration.
The variable here is the LTE network on VZ has barely been tapped into. Who knows what real world speeds will come when it finally gets saturated with 4G users.
So as of RIGHT NOW. LTE is beating out Wimax...Dan Hesse has admitted it

My LTE speeds have actually gotten faster since I got my TB. Got a bump after the outage and again after the first expansion. I'm yet to go below 18 MB/sec and average around 22-25. AND I got it while the data was still unlimited.

Yeah makes me wish I would have switched to Verizon the day before they implemented the data caps. I had called up a Verizon business rep and everything, but I couldn't justify the huge price increase.
i wish i could say that i dont care about 4g because 3g is ok, but 3g blows just as hard as 4g in my area (ok not AS bad, i literally dont get 4g here) but my 3g speeds generally range from 5-40kbps and usually get almost no upload at all. even with getting a good price on my plan, sub dial up speeds is literally ridiculous.
Lmao My dad brags about the data speeds (Verizon) over sprint. I said so what do you want a cookie? If I wanted to be on Verizon Id be on Verizon. He dropped it after that.

LTE is faster and they won't kill WiMax for a while so you have plenty of time for you upgrade to an LTE device.
Awesome. I thought they were going to force me to upgrade again. I'd be like, ''Damn, I just got this!''
I agree that LTE is faster than Wimax but i also know that the Wimax network never got to see a full well established deployment.
Wimax could of been much better than what it is, but I just think it came in to late (like everything in this country regarding cell phone technology does) and not enought time and money was put in to it.

wimax is a better technology, however, only sprint has wimax and has it on a bad frequency, if wimax was on a lower frequency you would see much better signal and penetration. Because verizon and at&t have better backbone they can provide faster speeds to their towers and so they gave LTE a better name in the consumer market, it has nothing to do with the technology but unfortunately sprint has to get the consumers to buy into their service and when the consumer see's that LTE gets better speeds (regardless of why) then sprint has to sell the consumer LTE to stay with the pack.
Wimax can offer faster speeds and more connections per tower but it is limited by sprint and the terrible speeds that sprint offers the towers. Do Not expect to get great speeds with sprint LTE as it will be just as slow as the wimax when the number of lte phones gets to be as high as the wimax phones on the sprint network.
Wimax had great speeds before the Evo 4g was released, just as you see the screen shots of sprint's LTE speeds. also dont forget that verizon lte had great speeds when it first came out but their speeds are similar to sprint's wimax now.
tl;dr wimax>LTE, sprint sucks right now, beer is good
Sprint did give wimax a bad name cause it's sucks big time. I'm in a "well covered" 4G area and good luck driving down the road keeping a signal. It's total crap & is completely worthless. Who cares if LTE is faster, wimax speeds would be totally fine if it could actually stay connected. What good is it if your phone can never stay connected to it. I'm hoping once Sprint lights up LTE I can actually stay connected to it without it cutting in and out all the time interrupting my music with buffering.

OMG LTE is NOT Faster than WiMax. Verizon's current LTE is faster than Sprint/Clear's WiMax but that does NOT in any way mean LTE is faster than WiMax b/c that is far from the truth.
speed depends on a ton of other things not just the general tech behind the protocol.

if the first, there is something wrong. if the second then he must be in a very low saturation area. I've seen tests up to 40 something mb/s with Verizon lte before the thunderbolt came out.
I've also seen 20 something mb with Wimax done in a populated area ie Houston by a photon. it depends on how many are connected and utilizing the bandwidth.

My contract with Verizon ends this week. Really thinking hard about switching from Verizon to AT&T to get this phone. I went and played with one at the store yesterday. Screen was amazing! I have unlimited data with Verizon right now and thats the only thing holding me back right now. Anyone make the switch and care to comment.

I did the same thing! The note is the craziest phone ever! I'm in the same boat I usually use wi fi at home so it wasn't a huge deal to go down to 3 gigs a month. Plus the deal killer with verizon was the spotty 4G lte coverage. If I switched from lte to 3g I was losing data for about 5 minutes at a time, or I would lose it altogether! I complained so much they let me out of my contract almost 2 years early. Best thing I ever did!

Well major bummer! Was excited to switch to AT&T this week for the Note. Thought my contract was up on the 15th. Seems I'm eligible for a discount on the 15th and my contract goes through July. I'll be keeping an eye on this forum and if the Note/Journal or whatever they might call it doesn't make it Verizon by then...see ya Verizon!
I'm making the switch and can't wait. I'm also giving up unlimited data but have never used that much data anyway. That may change when I get this phone because I may have better HSPZ+ and LTE coverage .

I LOVE my note, but if I wasn't locked into AT&T I would have looked hard at the galaxy nexus. I'd miss the bigger screen of the note, but the nexus screen is pretty big as well, and it's always nice to have a google phone. It's still LTE, already running ICS, and probably will have better/more sustained devleopment over its lifetime. Plus, I think overall verizon coverage is a little better and more reliable, although in my area, AT&T is fine.
A potential upside to AT&T is that if you are in an area where Verizon doesn't have LTE, I think (but I'm not sure) that Verizon falls back to CDMA, which is slower than even 3G on AT&T. But if you don't have LTE on AT&T, there's a good chance that HSPA+ 4G is available instead, which is noticeably faster than 3G on AT&T, which, again, is itself faster than Verizon's CDMA. This is to say, that if I'm not mistaken, if you're with Verizon and you don't have LTE, you're looking at pretty slow data on CDMA. But if you have AT&T there's a good chance you're on HSPA+ instead and still looking at some pretty stout speeds.
Coming from my iphone 4 on AT&T 3G, I find that their 4G HSPA+ is noticeably faster (in real usage, not just tests) than 3G was. And the HSPA+ coverage is nice... in fact, I'm not sure I've been on a 3G network yet anywhere I've been, it's all been at least HSPA+ or LTE, even out in the country. My understanding is that Verizon's LTE rollout is quite a bit more widespread than AT&Ts at this point, but I haven't been on it to say for sure just how far past the cities it really is. If their LTE coverage gets to the areas you frequent, you're good to go already, but if it's not much further out than around big cities, depending on where you spend your time, you could see faster speeds with AT&T by utilizing their 4G HSPA+ in areas where Verizon does not yet have LTE. So that's my long winded version of what I *think* I know, but I'm sure someone will correct me.
Anyway, after having the big ass screen, I don't think I could ever go smaller. Bigger, sure, maybe another half an inch or more, but I would struggle adjusting to something smaller.
Another Verizon to AT&T GNote user here. Had unlimited 4G on a Thunderbolt. Was worth it to switch back to AT&T (which I had before Verizon) since we now have LTE in New York.
I even broke contract with ETF to do it. Still worth it to me.
I just switched from a iPhone 4S on Verizon with unlimited Data to the Note on AT&T
I'm not even looking back NOTE=WIN
I had the Verizon galaxy nexus.....I switxhed to tmobile to get the galaxy s2...withing 14 days I broke contract to at&t....lol....the galaxy nexus is nothing to brag about...tmobile s2 is faster to me..but crappy customer service and signal....so far the coverage on At&t where I live is awesome..and the note rooted...with v6..scripts makes this phone a blazing beast by far the best phone I've owned
