LTE? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I've had about enough with sprint. Sprint continue's to say LTE is in the Houston area. That 4G is a free service and not nothing can be guaranteed. Since July 15th I have had 3 or 4 minutes of LTE. It's completely understandable that LTE is "rolling out" but to deny that there are major issues day in and day out is entirely unprofessional. Below is the conversation I had with a sprints rep.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qsqifoht031velh/2012_07_30_16_02_18667270665_Out-003.mp3
I know other people who are having the very same issue. I can't be the only one having issues, right?
PS: I borrowed someones quote from somewhere in the forums. I will try to find it later and edit the post.

They're releasing their lte still. Most launched markets only have 15% towers working so far. Chicago being the only exception with 38%.
Be patient, lte will hit your area. I'm not getting any until November.

^this. Give it time. Atts rollout was no different

there are countless other threads on LTE...post in one of them please...
Also like other have stated, they are still rolling LTE out and will be for awhile...they announced markets live when only 20% roughly of the market was actually live tower wise, so it will get vastly better coverage wise...

Sprint signs 15 year agreement for LTE

Sprint signed a $20 billion 15 year agreement with Lightsquare to build and use a 4G LTE network.
It made me put a halt in buying the 3D, as I would rather have LTE than WiMax. If only for the better building penetration, I get no 4G at work with my Evo, but a friend gets almost full bars with LTE.
But I suppose it would be at least a year before the network launches with LTE phones anyway right?

Why? If you have an upgrade now use it. It will be some time before it will be operational and have phones for it.
Considering how "fast" wimax deployment was, you could get the 3D without much risk, IMO.
If they just signed the delivery expect it to be a while before the conversion even starts and the even longer before they start hitting anything but very large markets

My city is always one of the first to get new networks. Austin, TX. We have Dell, IBM, Intel, Google, and AMD all with large offices here, I assume that's why.
But yeah I think I should be good waiting and getting the Evo 3D

You're speculating that it will have better building penetration, because we don't know what frequency band it will be initially launched on.
Right now, Sprint has access to the 2.5ghz band, where WiMax sits. If sprint uses it for an initial launch, building penetration won't be any better then with WiMax.
You all are speculating that Sprint will even use them for mobile data and not backhaul.

I'm pretty sure in the deal Sprint is providing the network. That's the main thing that's in it for Lightsquared.
I like Wimax. LTE will just be a bonus. Wimax does a great job as is.

I too like Wimax, but I think LTE has greater long term potential. I am glad that Sprint is investing in LTE.

I dont have time right now to search for ya but jump into the Evo4G general forum and search clearwire and read up a lot there.
LTE is NOT better than WiMax and vice versa. Its all about the network and how the tech is deployed to us. You put LTE on the same towers as WiMax is right now and same freq, then you will end up with the exact same problems we all have right now with WiMax.
That news there is lil old too, and even more so Clear got the clear to increase the width of their channels from 5.5MHz to 20MHz from the FCC. They ran tests long ago at 20MHz and were hitting 80Mbps! Though yes speed is nothing if you can't connect to it. lol
its all about tower placement and freq and combination of the two.
Since your new, you should search around and read up on Sprints Project Leapfrog(Network Vision Upgrade) that is underway and will be better for Sprint and all of us.
Upgrade every year.. no worries. LTE wont hit the market in the next few months.. i dont expect to see it in the next 6 months. The E3D will do you just fine till a LTE phone is avail, and by then, your going to want to get the next best phone out anyways.
enjoy the phone or whatever phone you choose to go with.
Here is a good article about Wimax and LTE:

Could you provide me the link of Clear getting the clear from FCC? Their June 9th proposal was scrapped, which means either means postpone for a later date, or nixed completely. I'm going to wait for official news with Sprint, Clearwire, and Cox, before I speak on the matter. Your post is the bigger news to me.
Edit: I've just taken a peek at the tentative agenda, and the actual june meeting, and it wasn't there. July 12th the next meeting.

It seems no one really knows what's going on ... That includes Sprint! Did I just speculate again?
Ahah, found something definitive. According to this article I just found it seems they are indeed planning to switch to LTE. So now I just wonder what the benefits of LTE over WiMAX are? Bit for bit WiMAX is more efficient so it's not that.

Yeah, I found it completely odd that no blog or anyone else mentioned anything about the stuff after the date came and went with nothing big announced at all so I ended up emailing the FCC Press Secretary, Office of the Chairman Neil Derek Grace. He looked into the specific agenda item which i found odd to be on the pre-prelim agenda and then when the next prelim agenda for that meeting was released it was not on there at all and no notice of its removal b/c it wasn't the actual prelim agenda right before the mtg.
Here is what I wrote him:
According to the tentative agenda http://transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2011/db0519/DOC-306766A1.pdf the June 9th meeting was supposed to go over the following:
"Wider Channel Bandwidths FNPRM: An FNPRM seeking comment on a proposal which may permit operators to use spectrum more efficiently by enabling the use of wider channel bandwidths for the provision of broadband services in the Broadband Radio Service (BRS) and the Educational Broadband Service (EBS)."
Is there a reason this was dropped from the agenda suddenly and when will this issue get addressed?
Best Regards,
Jase S.

Here are the two quotes from Neil in regards to the issue.

"Hi Jase –
Yes, this is routine. If an item is voted on before the meeting, it’s removed from the agenda because it no longer needs to be considered. It was voted & adopted on 5/24 and released on 5/27. If you want to look at the docket for results – it’s item 11-81.
Thanks - Neil"

Now I looked for that through the FCC site through their search but couldn't find it b/c the results were nothing near what I wanted it seemed. In the end I figured he was right as it took him a few days to get me an official answer on it. His first response was for me to hang while he looked into it.
Though if you find anything different to conflict with that let me know and ill be sure to shoot the guy back and see whats up.

New Sprint 4G rollout plans

Has anybody seen 4G expand into their city in the past 4-6 months?
I'm searching the web and can't find any evidence that they are continuing to expand their 4g. I read on a couple web sites/forums that they just need to flip a switch and their existing 4g towers will increase the area they are covering but I can't find any evidence to support that they are actually doing this.
It seems as though Wimax expansion has halted. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
-Thanks, Jack
WiMax 4G dev has come to a slow crawl due to Clearwires $$$$ problems and there new LTE test markets, Clearwire has already started its FCC approval for LTE/WiMax Modems.

Yep pretty much.
Nope WiMax is pretty much dead. Sprint just announced this,
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/07/28/sprint-confirms-4g-lte-deal-with-lightsquared/
Looks like there going a different route with LTE. Clearwire was a great concept but they grew too fast and overstretched themselves.
While Sprint hasn't announced anything, Clear has continued to turn on towers nationwide to avoid the FCC breathing down their necks about not using their licenses.
Best place to look for 4g coverage is www.clear.com/coverage
I think it is complete BS. I dont have 4G in my area and honestly dont think I will within the next 2 years. When I first bought the Evo 4G, I thought I would have 4G within the year. 6 months after purchase I had I feeling it would never make it here. I bought the 3D with no expectations of ever being able to use the 4G on it....it sucks, but its reality

Just because Sprint doesn't show it on their coverage map doesn't mean there's none in your area. My co-worker makes it a habit to check Clear's coverage map daily. A couple months ago he noticed they had our town (40,000 people) lit up pretty well. Turned on 4G and sho' nuff I was able to connect. It shows up as Sprint and the speeds not bad. Check www.clear.com/coverage

This all sounds good, it all sounded good when Sprint's 4G first rolled out, and I bought the EVO 4G last year. So over a year later and STILL no 4G in all of SC, I mean come on.
Hell, I'd be happy with just GOOD 3g coverage, not 150 kbps crap speeds.
4g rolled out in May here, I couldn't get it inside though, noticed the other day I get a single bar inside now. Clearwire is still rolling it out. Sprint argued with me about 4g being in my area when I upgraded to the 3d.
Download sensorly from the market and use that instead.

'effin A right! Last year, I switched to Sprint and got the Evo 4G with high hopes of getting 4G in my bustling college town in Central VA. Now, over a year later, I've stepped up to the 3D and still don't have reasonable 3G coverage, much less 4G. I'll stick with Sprint a while longer, but this ****'s gotta stop. Big promises only get new customers for so long before they get pissed off and leave.

AND on top of that, Verizon rolled out their LTE here (I'm just outside Columbia, SC) and my house is in LTE coverage. A buddy of mine has a verizon work phone (droid charge, hes in columbia) he pulls 24 meg down and like 5-6 meg up, from his house. That stuff pisses me off. Sprint was first with 4G, Verizon was late to the game but they've expanded far more than Sprint ever did, and ton's faster and in my area!

I think its still rolling, just slowly. I used to never get 4g at work, I now get it with solid signal.
I still am leaning towards the LTE being for voice over LTE. A few weeks ago they had a bunch of positions open up specifically to set up a voice over lte network, that was the whole point of the jobs.
I've been waiting on 4G since the day the OG evo came out, I bought it thinking I'd eventually have it, if not a year, then by the end of my contract.
Fast forward to today, I have an Evo 3D and still no 4G. But now the town over has 4G, and it's not the biggest or most crowded town, but what I don't understand is why they didn't turn 4G on in the metropolitan town of Springfield MA, instead of west springfield? There's gotta be way more sprint users in Springfield, and I'm there everyday.
Verizon's LTE is looking better and better everyday. If they get a superphone like the Evo 3D or the Sensation, I might just switch. Especially since Sprint can never seem to bill me properly
This is what's Going to happen.

This is why I'm waiting until long after my renewal upgrade is available (march) to re-sign. I'd be an idiot to waste my upgrade on a phone that can't take advantage of the coming upgraded tech. I'm hoping my 3D is only going to be needed for 6mths or so.
The sprint towers being deployed for lte are multimodal. Meaning they support multiple bands and would give us better signal all around and faster 3g when they do the 800 mhz switch.
Also I've read rumored (I know rumors are just that) that sprint may release phones that support both lte and wimax in 1 chip. If you upgrade to 1 of those earlier models coming out, you should be in the clear. We'll see though.

It took Sprint how long to release a Wimax phone after the first Wimax tower was put up?
As I recall, Sprint was only selling Wimax data cards for quite a while before the Evo 4G launched.
If history repeats, Sprint won't have an LTE (or network optimized, whatever) phone for quite a while. And when they do get one, they will probably require all kinds of increased fees and plans in order to get it.
I hope I'm wrong, but my faith in Sprint is pretty low these days.

I'm with you on that one, Slim. I switched to Sprint 18 months ago (EVO 4G) on the promise of 4G. Now, my bustling college town 100 miles from DC STILL doesn't have Wimax, 3G is STILL a joke here and there's no way I can reasonably expect LTE to be implemented here for at least another year or so. Oh yeah, and voice coverage is so bad that walking inside a one-story brick building, my office, routinely causes dropped calls.

WiMax was up well before Sprint had a WiMax phone b/c Clearwire had WiMax up and was doing nothing but data plans for people.
Regardless of History the VP Sprint has already stated many times their first LTE phone will come around 2nd half of 2012. Lately being more specific he said it looks like 3rd qtr of 2012.
You can say what you want about their lack of wimax in cities after saying they would have it but i bet you wont find where the VP was stating wimax would be in city X by time X and then they failed to comply. Most of the claims of wimax coming to city X's are from sprint reps which we all know is complete crap. All the other statements are very general.
LTE phone will be on sprints network next year i guarantee it, willing to bet whatever you want on that. The WiMax rollout is completely different than the LTE rollout. LTE already has its suppliers signed up and set to roll out in their respective sections of the US. On top of that they have Lightsquared coming in too doing their LTE, and then in future after 2015 you have Clearwire going LTE.

We post internal information from Sprint and Network Vision partners that are not public information. You will have to pardon me if I don't leak documents that will compromise our sources. But time will prove it all out.
And yes, we are not affiliated with Sprint Nextel. And that is a good thing. Otherwise, you wouldn't hear anything! We are THE source for Sprint Network Vision out there.

thanks mr cloak and dagger ;p;
Either way it will be years before sprint brings any lte or real 4g to most customers. Im still angry that wimax never made it to Toledo. Instead went to every other city in Ohio. Detroit got shammed too. Where did my extra $10 a month go to after getting a wimax phone?

The $10/month is not for Wimax or any 4G, it is for owning a smartphone. All smartphones are subject to this charge.
No, it is for 4G enabled phones.
Didn't have the charges for our crackberries.
Only when we switched to the 4G models.

Blackberry's have their own plans. It's not for 4G. Anyone here can tell you that.
That $10 extra a month is for premium data ..on smartphones even if they dont have 4g..i.e samsung moment, samsung intercept are 3g only and that fee applies to them

4G lte has come to Salt Lake City

So woke up this morning to find I had LTE. only one bar but speeds are encouraging.
Yep, noticed it last night while driving down I-15. LTE is basically everywhere now! I've verified Las Vegas, SLC, Manhattan, Newark, Bethlehem (PA) and Detroit.
Overnight implementation, just like Verizon. Kudos T-Mo. Guess we know what their bold announcement in the next few days will be!
All of this on the $30 prepaid plan too. The best setup in wireless, period!
It's up in O-town too

It's in Lindon and American Fork too. I work in Draper and it's here as well.
Yea I notice that too, there LTE at my house in the west valley area, but I don't need LTE there I have Wi-Fi at home. I need it at my work in Sandy but sadly they don't have it yet.

SLC LTE
Hey Guys I enabled my LTE on my Nexus 4 the other day and when I made it to SLC this morning sure enough it was there. Speeds were promising but could have been a little better. Anyways check it out!
LTE down most of Bangerter HWY also seeing LTE from state street to 5600 west from 3900 s and 3500s and 4500s. Noticing it also going towards the airport from 4700s down 5600w it's getting stronger too, bars have increased past few days
It's been in SLC for about a month now. They have been slowing flipping it on. Only about half of the towers have LTE right now, with the rest of them coming by the end of the summer and a few by the end of the year.

Lol. This thread is also a month old.
Side note, I'm in Boise Idaho and I hope we get it here soon. The hspa here use to be phenomenal but is really lacking the last 6+ months.

LOL, indeed it is...
I just got on t-mobile this month, when I was signing up they had a page pulled up with all the towers and expected dates they would go live with LTE.
There hspa is pretty impressive, that is usually what I get at work inside, sometimes I get LTE, but it is so weak of a signal its not worth it.

Yea I saw you talking about switching on twitter. I just came back over from Verizon myself. Unlimited data and LTE being here soon planted the seed then jump sealed the deal. Won't miss Verizon and their overly expensive bs a bit.

Live in Midvale/Cottonwood Heights area. Get about 11 - 13 down, on average.
Anybody know if there are plans to release lte in Bountiful/Centerville? Currently theres LTE in bountiful but only if youre closes to SLC but I'm in between the centerville and bountiful border and only get about 5mbps down on hspa+

I know they plan on updating every site along the Wasatch Front. I'm not sure of specific dates, but I have seen maps of Salt Lake County, Davis County, and Weber County and most of the sites are supposed to be done by the end of the year. There are a few that are planned for next year too, but once complete, there should be total LTE coverage in the area.
