Hi Everyone!
Just a quick question for those of you on Jelly Bean and living in Canada or anywhere where Google Magazines is not supported. Did you figure out a way to get the Magazine APK that works into your device and get it up and running? Were you able to download magazines afterwards?
Thanks!

I just got my Nexus 7 Monday, and I've been trying to do exactly that. Couple things i've tried is using OpenVPN client and route all traffic through my US based server, then re-open the Google Play app and all the content shows up. When I browse to the Play Magazines app, it says "INSTALLED", additionally there is no open or update buttons. And when I initiated the install from my PC browser it says it is already installed. I also found an apk and tried installing that, it installed fine (it also gave a prompt saying "system app"...already installed...do you want to replace it notification) but doesn't show up anywhere in the system (app drawer etc.); and when I browsed to Play Magazines app in the Play store it changed from "INSTALLED" to "UPDATE". So it's there somewhere...I just can't see or open it!!
Also just for kicks i tried purchasing a magazine (while the vpn tunnel was still connected) without the app, but it gave an error saying not available for purchase in your country.
I've attached the apk i found, in case you want to give it a try.

Thanks for the quick reply.
It looks like Google really doesn't want us Canadians getting our hands on magazines.
Thanks anyways!

Found a solution!!
(Skip to step 2 and try that first, if that doesn't work then go back to step 1)
STEP 1: install a file explorer (i use ES File Explorer) and browse to system/apps/Magazine.apk. Click to install it.
STEP 2: browse through your app drawer and find "Play Magazines". If it's not there add the "Play - My Library" widget, it should prompt you with a few options of what to add...My Library, Movies & TV, Books and now hopefully Magazines. Once added it may ask to "touch to re-enable" the magazines.
Poof, thats it! Now Magazines should be visible/enabled. Enjoy!
This worked on my Nexus 7, I had to purchase magazines on my PC's browser. on the tablet with VPN enabled it synced the magazine and I can sucessfully download and read it. On my Galaxy Nexus (flashed to YAKJU), even with VPN it will not sync magazines or be able to browse Magazines in the Play store. I'm thinking this is because it detects "region" via the SIM...
Let me know if that works for you.

Which part didn't work? Were you able to open the app (either directly or via the widget)? You shouldn't need VPN until you want to use the app. It should install without it.
I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImRlLmJsaW5rdC5vcGVudnBuIl0. With a VPN tunnel to my company's US server.

Out of curiosity, I know you would need VPN to download the magazines, but once you downoaded and synced the magazine, could you disable VPN and still read it? (i.e. use VPN to download magazines and then disable VPN, reboot the device to it knows you're in Canada and keep reading the magazines you already downloaded?) Or can you only read magazines with VPN active?
Also, did you get access to any of the free magazines that come with the nexus 7 in the US? e.g. Popular Science (July 2012), etc.
Thanks!
@greenglue
Interesting, same as my Nexus 7 except the 16GB. Did you try with VPN?
@mck86
Yes, as far as I have tested you can continue to read once the VPN is disabled. (Although it may periodically disappear again, and you may have to click "re-enable" on the widget).
I wasn't aware of free magazines that came with it, I'll have to double check.
Hi!
Got it to work on my trip to Burlington VT. No VPN needed. It worked by itself. Just had to reinstall magazines app. I will test it again when I get back home tomorrow.

I tried to install the apk but no icon shortcuts show up, I checked the Activities list and it's there??
Got it working. Here were my steps.
1. Download and install the play magazines apk.
2. Download ES file manager.
3. In ES file manager click the apps manager icon and then click play magazines icon. Magazine app should now sign in and work. Icon will now appear tablet wide.
Hope this helps.

Worked brilliantly for me in the UK. Thanks very much!
ES File Manager doesn't show me Play Magazines.
I am in Germany right now, but I guess it doesn't make a difference where you are in Europe, right?

How did you purchase the magazines through your browser? I feel like I'm going to feel really silly once I get the answer but I can't figure it out.

Hi, I'm not sure where to go next. I installed the Magazine APK. In ES I now have the Play Magazine icon showing up when I first open then app (along with all the other folders, Android, Downloads, Movies, Music, etc.). When I select it it lets me install it, which is great, but then it's not showing up in the app drawer or in the App Manager option within ES.
Any ideas how to get it to open? I'm lost.
Thanks!
Worked. Thank you so much. No root required.

Here is the Amazon Video APK:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352694
This is really the last piece that the Kindle has over the Nook Tablet... and now that is solved.
Notes
There is some preventative code in the Amazon Video Player that stops it from playing if you are rooted, but just get the "OTA RootKeeper" app from the Google Market (or search the apk) and install that. That lets you temporarily unroot with a single click. Then restore root with another. All right from your device! No need for PC connection. Now you can watch your prime shows without losing root!
There is no menu option to login to your prime account through the app. Some people claim that if you have Amazon MP3 installed and login there, then install the Amazon Video app, it will use the same login info. But if that doesn't work, you can simply click on a prime video, click the buy button, it will take you to a login screen, then login and it should recognize your prime access and let you watch.
Won't save login
Amazon Video apk installs and runs beautifully but I can't sign in. I selected a movie to purchase, was taken to the login screen, entered login info (I'm a Prime member.) but then it kicks me back to the movie screen and starts the cycle all over again. After re-entering my login several times it never gets past the loop. Is there a trick to having it remember the login?
Try and reboot the nook after logging in, worked for me.

Worked!
Worked like a charm and I'm embarrassed that I didn't try this first! Thanks for your reply.
Looks like it doesn't work if you are rooted.
Worked before rooting, no longer working after rooting. I am a sad panda.
The work around is to use OTA RootKeeper, a free app on the Market that will backup your "root files" (I'm guessing su) and restore when you need it.
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
Unfortunately, I can't test this since I don't yet have the Nook or any other Android tablet. Hope it helps you guys out though!

It's a better layout, and the video plays faster since it's all native.
Didn't work for me. I think because my NT is now rooted. Got a "cannot open file" when I tried to launch the apk.
about streaming videos...
Can anyone check how these stream on NT:
http://vimeo.com/hd
http://veetle.com/index.php/listing#all/quality/1 (highest playable bitrates?)
Revision3 apk (available at Market) when on "HD" ?
any other online HD streaming video content you know of and able to watch and report/demonstrate?
Thank you
Can NON Prime members at least rent movies? No free streaming right? I have the Amazon player on my NT but afraid to login to my Amazon account because I dont't want to be charged $80 lol

Prime membership just gives you a subset available to stream for free. It is not a requirement for accessing the video service.

You shouldn't get that error if you are rooted. It should let you do everything but give you a warning when you try to watch. But see the first post again for notes on how to easily bypass this.

Hmm. I installed the package twice and it's nowhere to be found, even with ES File Explorer.
These are the steps I used to set up my Nook Tablet and get it set up the way I wanted it. I have tweaked it even more but this is how I got to where I am now. I hope this collection of links to information may help others be as happy with their Nooks as I am with mine.
I am happy to have access to the Amazon ecosystem including buying apps from their app store and watching Amazon's instant streaming video as well as the Google Market and B&N Store. All this with the ability to access Netflix's HD content, an MicroSD slot, beautiful screen, sufficient processor & RAM leads me to feel that this is the best tablet for the money on the market today.
I would like to also thank Indirect, anlog, Loglud, gojimi, romified, t-r-i-c-k, robertely, Brad Linder and all of the other developers and XDA members that have worked on Nook tweaks and/or shared information for the benefit of others.
Just to be clear, I am nobody, I haven't created or worked on anything. I just mined all of this information for my own benefit and I thought I would post a copy of what I have found in a single post for those that follow. All of the credit should go to the people who created the posts that I am linking to.

Does anybody have a link to the SWIPEPAD apk file by any chance? Unfortunately I am only side-loading, hence my problem getting it via the traditional market.
I really have tried to get this a number of ways, and in a number of locations, but have kind of hit a roadblock! What's ironic is that it would have been quicker for me to ROOT my device and load it via google, rather than waste the time I put into trying to side-load it LOL!!!
Note: Root access is required in order for this to work.
Since I've found a workaround to install apps not showing up in the marketplace and haven't seen anyone address the issue other than rewriting system files, I thought I'd post this for people who (like me) don't know how to use the first method.
1) search for the app you want on Google in your browser, ie "xxx android"
2) click on the result leading to the Marketplace website (IMPORTANT: be sure to open the link with your browser and not the Market!)
3) click the "Install" button
4) you will be prompted to login, enter your info (you should only have to do this once)
5) this time, choose to open with Market when prompted
6) click the "Install" button and your app will download!
Hope this helps anyone

When I try this method, the search finds the program I'm looking for but as soon as I log in and open with "Market", not the browser, it replies with "Program not found". So I guess it doesn't work for me.
Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

I don't understand how this can work - if apps aren't showing up in the Market on your tablet, surely that's because Market thinks they're not compatible with your NT. And if that's the case, when you sign into your account in the browser, the same thing would happen of not letting you send the app to devices it doesn't think are compatible?
In browser, the Market doesn't even list my NT as one of my devices, even though I'm signed into the Market app on my NT. Any thoughts on this?
I've had this method work twice and fail a couple times. At step 5 when it opens up the market the app still shows as incompatible but it downloads it anyway.
Torrential91, can you give me an example of an app that this worked correctly for you?
rodorr
I just had it work for Real Racing 2 free version.
I tried it with facebook, but there was no download option, just a note saying it was not compatible with my device.
This method was successful in getting to the app page where i could not before.
I tried "Real Racing 2" and it did indeed work for me. It gave me the message "Your device isn't compatible with this item" but it went ahead and downloaded it anyway. So it does work with some items. Maybe it just doesn't work if there is a cost associated with the item.

I know Google maps worked for me. I believe Tumblr also worked this way.
Seems like this method is hit or miss. Can't really say why =/ I'm not a dev in any way, just a guy that experiments with trial and error haha.
Maybe a dev can chime in on this?

Not to sound ignorant, but is this on a rooted nt? I put the android market on here and it wouldn't even start up, so i'm assuming this is the case.

Yes you need root access in order to run the Market.

I followed all the steps but when I choose market for the prompt it pops up and says your device isnt compatible with this item. Any ideas?
Hi,
Is there a way to block purchase from within the phone? However, leave it possible to buy app from the Desktop (using Firefox & sign in to Playstore) and have the app pushed to the device.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Play always asks me for a password when purchasing an app, and you could set up a PIN too if you want.
You could install from a browser, but I'd recommend log in via computer and install apps that way.

Is it the same thing? When I buy an app using Firefox on my desktop, here is what I do:
1. Log in to my Desktop computer
2. Open Firefox
3. Sign in to Play store and buy the app
4. The app is then pushed automatically to my phone.
Can you show me how you did with "log in via computer and install apps that way" rather than using a browser?
Thanks
Has anyone gotten google play store working? I tried following the steps from android cowboy but I get back to back errors for google services no matter what.
On a different note, is there a way to remove the ads/special offers for free?
Thanks,
Sean

Google play is a system apps so it's gonna need a rooted or modified rom with bootloader cracked. Same is needed to disable kindle offers.
So is there any good way of getting apps beyond side loading?

Only the second part is true. You can get the Google play store apk on any device, regardless of root or not.

You can get it on the device, but it won't work. ... from experience. If you know how, ... do tell!

Try this link.
Although it says Kindle Fire HD, ignore that. Ignore step 3. Also ignore anything that says about copying to /system/app.
Just install the apps in the order he has listed then install the "Vending.apk" (That is the Google Play Store). Please also note that you will most likely not be able to install apps from it. :/

Did you ever try 1mobile market?

One way to get a lot of Android apps onto Kindle, until we get root.

Seems to me like there should be some kind of app you can run on your rooted android device to pull the apk. Then install the full version on the Kindle via sideloading.

Better results
You'll get better results in the interim from installing:
a) 1MobileMarket
or
b) Aptoide
or
c) BlackMart Alpha (shh..)
Tinkering with Google Play Store components before we have root may be an exercise in futility.
The content of the link is quiet useful to me. Thank you for sharing. I decide to buy a licence. :good:
Anyone tried SNAPPEA TO passthru GooglePlay?
I saw a utility SnapPea that seems to allow a pass thru from a PC to Kindle Fire HDX for accessing GooglePlay. As I still have not ordered my HDX I was wondering if anyone has tried this.
Thanks in advance;

The SnapPea app that I just tested is a way to control your android device from a browser on your computer, similar to AirDroid. It does not allow access to Google Play for the Kindle. What it does do is help you to install an .apk file through the browser, but then we can do that already by allowing sideload anyway. So maybe you were thinking about something else?

Same here.. Just bought a Kindle Fire HD 2013 and tried every possible attempt described on many how-to to get it rooted for Google Play. Nothing worked. Device current version is 11.3.0.5.
Tried the side load as well described for HDX. Gmail app works but that's about it.
Anyone succeeded on this version?
Thanks

I basically got pretty much every app to work except for Hangouts and Play Store. This includes everything from Voice to Gmail to Map to Google Earth to Google Plus to whatever. The key for me was to start with base configs that Android Cowboy posted, but then add bunch of dependencies from android 4.2.2 and update with latest version of backed up apps. For example, I have had to install Google Play Services 3.2.66 first and then was able to update to 4.0.31 after reboot. That version was required for Youtube to work properly (i.e. allow account sign-in). Things still crash sometimes, but it's not a huge deal.
Main thing is Youtube, Music, Gmail and Calendar are all working more or less ok. Chrome signed into my google account, but its not pulling down settings (bookmarks, open tabs from other computers, etc...). Google Plus crashes sometimes but works. Hangouts is clearly missing a dependency of some sort. I installed most things I could thing of from default Android 4.2.2 CM10.1 apps package and from backing up my phone (galaxy s4), but it's still no go. It would be nice to get that going as well. Oh well, Skype can cover most things there.

Wanted to confirm that I also have Google Voice working on the HDX 7 (since I rarely see people mentioning it as a Google App). Interestingly, I also got Talkatone working on the HDX with my Google Voice number, even though the app's FAQ plainly says that Google Voice will NOT work with it. As a result, as long as I have wifi, I can now easily use my Google Voice number to make and receive calls.
When I download apps from other sources (1mobile) they don't show up in the multi tasking bar. Anyone know of a multitasking app to fix this?

I'm using the paid version of floating toucher to access recent apps.
To get apps to show up on the stock multi tasking bar you have to open them from the stock home launcher.

Correct. The multitasking feature on the HDX is basically just the Carousel, with exactly the same shortcuts in exactly the same order. The only difference is it's hidden on the edge of the screen until you pull it up. So, just as apps launched from alternative launchers won't show up on the Carousel, they also won't show up on the HDX multitasking bar.
