Some questions regarding the different rooting methods for the galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok just to be clear: I am not asking what people think is the best method, please take a look at the questions
If nothing goes wrong with the delivery I will receive a Samsung galaxy s3 tomorrow . Since I want to root it I have been looking for available methods.
With some googling and looking around on xda I found several tutorials (of questionable quality I might add. Is it so hard to link to developer pages instead of a mediafire link that might be outdated a month later? ) and methods.
So far the most common methods I found are the following:
- The Samsung galaxy s3 toolkit
- Chainfire's CF-ROOT
At first glance cf-root seems the most straightforward method. I am however wondering if there are any drawbacks, for example; I see some issues with cwm listed and also no busybox(isn't this included in most roms and shouldn't I be able to install it from the market as well?)
The toolkit seems to be the most feature rich and to me it looks like the third rooting option is the most complete one. However I am not able to find a nice summary/manual for the toolkit, it might be so user friendly that such a thing is not needed but in my experience such a thing never is. It also seems that I end up with factory default phone with this method?
So my questions are basically as follows:
- Are there are big differences in the methods I found?
- Which method is preferable?
- Any drawbacks I should know about? (I know about the flash counter)
- Am I overlooking any better options?
P.S.
I am not new to rooting and custom roms. Just new to doing it with samsung phones a HTC Desire has a slightly different rooting process.

The rooting toolkit is so easy. Idiot proof

cf all the way, flash counter can be reset by using triangle away then flashing stock,

I repeat again...cf is the best method, safest, cwm issues are generally with 6.x.x.x, the whole #1 of the toolkit is one big instruction book....and all this can be found and deduced by searching and reading, I did...Why can't you?

I did gather indeed that the toolkit is indeed a....toolkit and can be used to flash cf-root as well if I wanted to. But the toolkit also includes a rooting method.I am having a hard time actually finding any factual data about the workings of the two methods and their differences.

by now you could have rooted and tried a couple of roms

Really tnx for reading... I am getting my phone tomorrow and I am doing some research in advance (like stated in the op) and make a educated decision. I do appreciate the help but I am really trying to find as much information as possible. And so far not a lot of people can give me any factual information about the differences and all I get is "method X is the best because it worked for me!" Which basically only answers the question what method prefer but not why they do so.
So for people overlooking it these are my questions regarding cf-root and the toolkit:
- Are there are big differences between the methods?
- Any drawbacks I should know about? (I know about the flash counter)
- Am I overlooking any better options?

Yeah it seems really easy to do, a lot easier than my desire 2 years ago
But the same goes for the toolkit, so I am still looking for someone who can explain the structural differences between the two methods of rooting and the results.

Buddy i just joined and from what i have been reading through out the many threads here it is all down to choice. if i was you i do a little research and read peoples opinions from the threads..for example you are looking for a modem. Go the modem thread and see what people are saying...I know it is a bit to much to read but that is how you will gain knowledge and that will help you to tweak your phone to your choosing..Hope this helps
Not really bcause i agree with you. I am just saying dont flame a person for asking a question. Because in your opinion the awnser can be clear, but for the person reading it it probaply isn't hence the question.

[Q] Unroot with Mac for Noobs

Noob here,
I've looked and looked and haven't seen anything definitive. I have a Samsung GS II (I-777). Someone had rooted my phone for me a while back but now I want to un-root it. I only have access to Mac and have NO idea how to. Everything on here seems to be written in a different language lol. What's the easiest and most simplest way to do this? Sorry if this is repetitive. Thanks in advance!
Rooting is such an easy proccess. Looking at you, I would not recommend it doing by yourself. Rooting will not get you on any legal issue other than warranty cancelation. If you still insist look at the stickied threads in this forum. I myself would like to explain it, but I can't explain it better.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Not sure if a virtual machine of Windows would work but I would give that a try if your hell bent on un-rooting.
My question is why do you want to reverse a good thing?

What I meant was that rooting is easy to do. And nothing negatives comes out of it unless you want to get the phone back to store... Since it's a mac and he doesn't have much knowledge of rooting, just let it be.

Well, "looking at you" made me go Whaaaat??? myself. Odd snap judgement from reading one post, which was pretty well phrased from what I saw.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434020 which should help - and this thread says it should work with MacOS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432. You'll need to do some more searching and learning (start with the sticky at the top of the general forum). If you don't feel confident doing this, then don't. You really aren't going to gain anything by it unless you have a specific need. Or expand on what you're looking for and maybe we can help.
BTW if you don't use it, the difference between root and unrooted is zero AFAIK. Root just lets you do more, but it's still stock i777 if that's all "someone" did.
Well, the thing is, the root that this person did (not me lol) has disabled my wifi. It's the ZedomaxStockKernel. I did some research on this and it seems that using this method renders the wifi useless. I clearly don't know what I'm doing but will read more in regards to this. Again, I've had the phone rooted for about a month now and I haven't done anything different. (Maybe because I don't know how) I wouldn't mind leaving it rooted but if I could fix the wifi issue, that would be great and then maybe I can learn further about this whole root thing. Reading through the forums though, most people rooting have Windows and not Macos. Which kind of leaves me feeling alone lol

Go into the siyah thread (you can do it on your phone). Download the ATT tar file. Open up mobile odin, select kernel. It will open a window to find your kernel. If you download from the xda app it will be in tapatalk_downloads I think. Select siyah_2.1.13 (or whatever it is). Go down to the bottom where it says flash firmware, hit it. If done correctly, the phone will reboot and everything will be awesome
I'll keep an eye on this thread tonight in case you have further questions.
Forgot to mention, the siyah thread is here in the i777 forum, more specifically look in the development section. The download link is in the first post.

Okay I understood almost everything you wrote! Let me start by saying thank you! Couple of questions so I don't screw something up!
1. Should I download the .tar file directly to my phone? Would that be easiest?
2. I can't seem to find the thread in the development section, care to spoon feed me?
Lastly, when I googled Siyah it gave my a website but I don't know if that's reliable or not.
Thanks!!
Found it!! Will try today and update!
Did everything exactly to the T. Worked but wifi is still not accessible. It scans for wifi but before anything happens, wifi turns off and then nothing. Any other thoughts on this? This is tough...

Do a factory reset in cwm recovery. You will lose your installed apps and home screen setup, so if you are partial to them, make a backup first.

Sorry to say it, but nobody is going to hold your hand like that on xda. That being said, like the guy before me said, it is very easy to learn the process as we have all had to. The best, I repeat, best thing you can do is read read read and search search search. Two years ago, I too did not know how to root or do anything else related to romming my phones, but learned through reading. Everything you need to know and much more is carefully laid out for you already, you just have to read it yourself.

I used the above website to root and it worked flawlessly. Rooted and installed ClockworkMod in minutes. This website also has a bunch of other tips, tricks, apps, ROMs, etc, all centered around the Galaxy Note. Just make sure when you root, flash ROMs, etc, you use the correct stuff. There are two Galaxy Notes. They have different processors and, therefore, have different root methods, ROMs, etc. On RootGalaxyNote, there is a section for both.
BTW, I am also running OnlyOne ICS ROM and its awesome!
/facepalm
Im ALMOST surprised the flaming hasn't started already.
First thing that comes to mind.. if you can't be bothered to search, and read the HUGE POSTS stickied to the tops of the forum labeled "ROOTING FOR DUMMIES" and "HOW TO ROOT" - why do you want your Note rooted? What is it going to do for you?
Read, Read, Read. I read the forums for a week before even thinking about beginning a root.
What I do is open the xda app and spend many sleepless hours reading. Alot. My wife knows that at 2am she can roll over and see me reading, reading, reading xda. Just long press your device and subscribe. Makes it show under the favorites tab.

Dumb rooting question

I am familiar with rooting HTC's. However I have only rooted one Samsung device. So forgive my noob question.
When rooting the GS3 can I obtain root without having to reinstall a new OS/ROM? Meaning, if I have my current system customized the way I want it and want to just flash root and a custom recovery to my device can I do so without losing any of the set customizations that I have already done to my system? Again, I know the answer to this for HTC devices.....but I am unsure as to whether this holds true for Samsung as well. Thanks.

Yeah, I read the stickies before creating this thread. However, none of them definitively answered the question I am asking here with a sufficient level of unambiguous detail. Thus the reason I created this thread. I am a noob to rooting a Samsung device. I'm not a noob to xda. But thanks anyway for your post. I found it extremely helpful.
If you root an s3, you won't lose your files. It seems you don't on any Samsung devices. HTC decides cause the phone to wipe once you unlock the bootloader. Hope this helps

When I rooted my Epic I didn't lose anything at all. But I know the platform setup has evolved quite a bit since then so I was not 100% sure if this was still the case with the SGS3. Thank you for your clarification on this matter.

Better off to say Touchwiz sucks as opposed to 4.1.2 sucks. There are 2 developers that still work 4.1.2 and your going to come off real ungrateful for their efforts. There is not a thing wrong with their ROMs. You just have to know how to fine tune them to your needs. Don't bash them if you can't do it. Just don't run them.

I wasn't the one who recently posted about running a Note 2 ROM on our device. No wonder you bricked yours.
Look at my post count, look at yours.
Look at my thanks count, look at yours.
You are everywhere posting about same issues, multiple times and in multiple threads. Issues that only you seem to have.
I have even PM'd you and tried to help, but you only read what you want to read and question more experienced members who have solid practices. Don't want my help fine, don't post without researching your personel issues. You won't believe anybody anyway.
Good luck..........geeeeezzzzz.
Yes I edited this, as I went on a tangent regarding this, but common decency got the better of me. I hope the other one was read though.

Ok. Don`t know about unlocking stuff. Here is a thread where you can find some stock Roms. The first one is 4.0.3.

Just flash the J2 modem and follow the steps.
I had to replace my main board, so I took the ota update, then rooted, then realized I didn't unlock. So I flashed the J2 modem, unlocked, and kept that modem. It didn't do any better than the new modem that came with the update.
This thread turned pretty nasty for such a basic question.
Yeah it did. I flipped my ignore button to the on position and I'm goooood
