Huge spike in data usage after moving to AOKP. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

In the past four days or so, I've gone from 2GB to 3GB of data usage and gone over my limit.
I have rarely left the house in the past four days, and I've been connected to wi-fi the entire time.
Data usage was left on, but doesn't the system prioritize wi-fi, anyways?
I've gone ahead and installed Onavo to find out what's going on once my data cycle restarts, but I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas as to what might've happened.

No. I streamed with Pandora, and might've accidentally left it running in the background because I'm not used to the AOKP interface yet, but my phone was on the wi-fi network the whole time.

I'd think so too. Better title would've been after performing factory reset.

May as well have blamed the Reagan administration as well... post hoc ergo propter hoc

I've not noticed any data spikes although I haven't been closely monitoring or testing with various roms. If you think it's related to the rom somehow you'll have to test it on your own.
Over the next couple days, when you go to sleep or are on wifi, keep a log of your data usage. First day keep wifi and data on. Next day keep only wifi on. Record the hours of which wifi was on and see if there is any significant data usage during those hours. If you have a backup with your previous rom then perform the same steps. Compare results.

After my plan resets, I'll go ahead and do that.

Just remember if yer wifi goes out and yer screens off you may not notice it switching to data.

Battery life...WTF google

My phone started dieing overnight and I was really confused because I could've sworn I had a lot of like left when I went to bed. So I did a test tonight...
Charged to 100% at 10:30pm
All background application closed, ram cleared
Wifi and GPS off
Results: after 8.5 hours of doing nothing, I lost over 75% battery.
Screenshots are below...WTF is happening with my phone?
Looks like something is keeping it from deep sleep. Download cpuspy and see if that is the case. When you click on phone stand by what does it say?

It just says Time on 8h XXm XXs
Looks like Google talk is keeping it awake. Never used GT before so not sure if that is normal. I am having similar (but not as drastic) with ms exchange keeping mine in awake state. I am using ics alpha 2 Rom and did not have this issue on stock GB. What Rom are you using?

It also looks like your cell signal isn't all that great so it's constantly pinging. Not sure about that though. Do you need data all the time? I use 2x battery so it severs data. Saves a **** ton of battery life.

I noticed the Google Talk but I never use it, and it's installed on my phone, but I can find a way to uninstall it anywhere. It also doesn't give me an option to log out either.
Oh and I'm running the ICS alpha 2 ROM. I don't recall having this problem with GB.
I use the ICS -1 Click Odin leak (In progress of getting a better ICS loaded) but I have noticed that I run into a lot of Battery life problems when I am sleeping... If I leave my phone unplugged overnight it always dies, I have to charge it. It's weird... Because I can be on it all day with amazing Battery life, then it just dies over night with a full charge of not even being in use...
I probably need to run some analytics to see what is killing it in the first place... I always force close my apps though...
This happens on any OS, GB, or ICS...

I had the same problem which is why I went back to GB. Remember this is an ATT leak of an unfinished ROM. they have all sorts of unfinished code and debugging running that it's bound to cause these issues.

BINGO!!! Just checked some screen capture from battery stats from GB and my cell strength was no ways near as bad as it is on ICS. Need to see if any fixes are out there. It almost all tan for signal strength on ICS vs all green in GB. Same locales for both samples.
by the way, i was getting between 1 day to 1.5 days on rooted GB oc'd to 1.84 with 4 hours screen time. Did not ever see exchange using any noticeable % of battery. Now getting 15 hours with 2 hours screen time and exchange using 6% of the battery. Not going back yet because the pro's out weigh the con's.

Well that would suck if the ICS radio is a step backwards over the GB radio....

Yep, it seems like the partial wakelocks are getting you.
It will go into deep sleep but then go up to 384 off and on.
Gtalk looks like the biggest culprit.
Like I said if data is off it shouldn't have wakelocks.
Another test you could do tonight is the exact same but put it in airplane mode.
It shouldn't budge much.....
I managed to find a way to log out of google talk, so I'll test it under the same conditions tonight to see if that changes anything.
Airplane mode overnight is not an option for me since I need cell service in case of emergency calls. Generally, I do notice slightly worse reception of the previous GB ROM, so the modem might be questionable.

Understood about the calls. You can get calls and texts without data though. That's why I was recommending 2x battery which is like juice defender I think. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.aDataOnOff&hl=en
I realized I really don't need data unless I 'want' data. I do push my emails but they won't push until I turn on data. Saves a lot of battery, especially when on LTE.....
It works well for me because you can set a delay for the data. So you can turn on your screen (not unlock) and see if you got any new texts. If not, put it back in my pocket. All without data coming on. I do these quick checks all time...
Then there is a delay time you can set after you unlock.
I have mine set to 3 min. If I do get a text, I will unlock, read it and maybe respond quickly, then put it back in my pocket. As long as its not mms that's all done without data.
If I need to get data prior to the 3min there is a notification to connect the data.
I'm coming from the thunderbolt and we had to REALLY find all the tricks to save battery life. As it given to us by HTC and Verizon it was unacceptable.
At any rate, sorry for the wind there. If you're wondering, I have no association with 2X battery. I just like to spread the word when I find an app that is useful and has helped me out.

I used to use juice defender but a couple things were a deal breaker for me:
1) First was that it rendered Cerberus almost completely useless. I could not get the phone to connect using the web interface at cerberusapp.com since the phone had no data with the screen off. Sure I could have used the SMS method of activation, but I don't have another phone to text from and it just isn't as flexible as the website.
2) Every time I unlocked the phone, I had to wait 10+ seconds for data to fully reconnect before I can start using stuff. When I unlock the phone, it's usually to check something very quick, and if I'm stuck waiting, I'd rather suffer the battery loss than to wait a bunch of times.
I suspect every battery saver app has this issue, and they can probably be configured to work to my needs, but I just don't have the time and patience to be tinkering with stuff like that.

JD Ultimate has an option that allows foreground apps to force enable/disable data, which is an easy thing to set. Also, my experience with JD is that data reconnects as soon as I unlock the phone and before I can launch an app. Battery saver apps are definitely frustrating, but I find that the correct settings fix 95% of the annoyances.
I hear ya on the time thing. Just thought I'd over up that tidbit. I don't seem to have much of a delay. 2x does allow for whitelisting apps you want to run like Pandora.

Yup, that's exactly why I don't want it. If I rarely/never use the app, I don't want it constantly connected wasting my battery and data. I wish there was an easy way to turn that off. I've been reading on Google and there were posts from 1-2 years ago that said signing out of gtalk doesn't help with the wakelock, so we shall see tonight when I test it again.

Actually, there is (sort of). Purchase an app called Autostarts on the market. Open it, wait for it to finish loading, hit the menu button, then tap the 'group by application' option.
Then, scroll thru the list to Google Talk and tap it. This will expand a bunch of different conditions that Google Talk automatically starts under. Disabling every condition will cause the app to never automatically start in the background (but the app will still launch if you manually launch it). Since I dont currently have root, I cant see what the conditions are, but you might need to leave one or two enabled if you need to receive incoming calls.
Reboot your phone after making any changes.
I should also mention that if you manually launch the app, you need to remember to manually close the app if this is what you assume is causing the battery drain.
If nothing else, you can use Autostarts to help determine if Gtalk is what is causing the issue by just disabling everything for it and watching battery drain rate.
I also use another app called Battery Widget Pro by 3c which will tell you everything about the battery and what exactly is causing it to drain.
What I would do is disable everything unless it looks like its something for receiving calls (if you need to receive calls that is) and reboot the phone, then test it by using another phone to call your Google # and make sure it works.
The point is tho to disable everything you can. I personally use Autostarts to disable every user app that doesnt either have a widget or a scheduled process that needs to run in the background to perform its task. Helps a crap ton with battery life.
So looks like signing out of google talk did not help anything looking at more detail in the better battery stats it might be google maps that's causing all the wakeups

Batteryife on MeanROM

I need some assistance, I just flashed MeanROM 5.7 this morning and seem to be experiencing the same issue, a draining battery. It's like 8:30am and I unplugged about 6:30am. I'm currently at 77% with very light usage. I've sent maybe 20 text messages and spent maybe 10 minutes in various apps. My on screen time is currently 29 minutes. I have email set to sync every 4 hours, weather syncs every three hours, I created the MeanRom.opt file and set parameters for battery. Is there anything I can do to increase my battery life as I hear about others getting at least a full day out of their battery.

I get 30+ hours with almost 4 hours of screen on try turning off auto sync and whatever else is not neccesary such as GPS and IMHO changing to battery I tried it once and got horrible battery life you can also check Better Battery Stats and see if some rouge programs are running I know GN is a big battery killer also I always heard having wifi on as much as possible was supposed to save battery but.. I had mine on and it kicked the crap out of my battery I saw in BBS that wifi had almost 6000 wakelocks so I turned it off until I needed it then back off when done no more battery problems.
It's not uncommon to have mediocre battery life immediately after flashing a ROM...give it a day or two to settle and it should improve. That's typically been the case for me.

Yeah, that would help...wifi uses less battery than 3g too, so use that whenever you can. Just make sure the "Best WiFi Performance" option is disabled in wifi settings (it drains battery pretty aggressively).
You really shouldn't have to disable your data connection to get decent battery life though. Have you let the battery run all the way down? How many hours do you get on a full charge? Do you have the same problem with other roms?

I never turn off my 3g. It seems that if it doesn't need data, that it isn't using the 3g. It's on but in a standby mode.
When I'm at home, it's connected to WiFi. Which will help some.
I do have my auto sync turned off too. If stops pinging for messages all the time.

[Q] Battery Help needed - Moving form the Beanstown Post

Coming from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032447&page=835
I have been having battery drain issues on beans town ROM ever since i loaded Build 7 (currently on build 10). 20% battery drop in 4 hours of sleep (even with the Wifi and 4G off)
I am trying to determine what is causing it. I have screen capture of the warnings below and the alarm screen is blank in Better Battery Stats- The other 2 attachments are from yesterday
I have Google location off.
I am strongly considering just going back to stock at this point- the drain is not acceptable.
Stock got 2 days with normal use (I have responded to other posts where they say it depends etc etc- understand that but- big but- normal use on stock for 24 hours took it down to maybe 55%- i can drop to 55% in 8-9 hours with the phone unused in sleep on this ROM )
You may not want to come off with attitude of you want people to help. It sounds like that in op.
Two things I notice. First your wifi is on in those shots. Service to be honest nothing seems abnormal

Hi- no attitude but I am wondering if I am the only one seeing this or not. I realize this is "for free" support and people help here because they love the technology or just want to help- so i appreciate that- sorry if I gave that impression.
I live in a heavy populated area in Atlanta with strong signal, even in the house (at least 3bars). the calls i think were 1 min 47 seconds if i recall correctly. regarding Wifi- i may have turned it back on right before the screen shot as I saw the battery still going down at pretty much the same rate)
I am wondering if it is an inherent HW problem with either the battery or something with the air interface- motherboard
Based on the screenshots, your phone was on for just under 5 hours, and wifi was on for 4.5 hrs of that time, so 90% of the time. If wifi was on, but not connected and was scanning, I could see that causing significant drain. Also, do you have any theme installed? Any other changes made to the ROM itself?

I have wifi set to turn off when phone is asleep- when i wake the phone, I see that wifi is off and it will reconnect to the AP at my house.
I lost some train of thought when switching threads but i believe Wifi was off (I know it shows on in the screenshot)- which makes me think something is amiss here in HW. that is why i am pretty sure i turned off all interfaces last night and left them off.
I also have power saving mode on for the phone.
The phone is at 51% currently- I will place it back on charger to take it to 100% then turn off all air interfaces and see what happens
That a good plan?
Go into your apps and clear the data on wifi share... why if your phone is sleeping it needs to be using wifi 58 percent of the time? ...this tells me an app is waking the phone...so look and see what is causing the most wake locks...once you find the app causing the most wake locks... Delete it and reinstall... Then go into the settings of that app and set your sync to a reasonable interval... Last of all go have three hours of coffee at star bucks and use their wifi to check and see if your modem is causing the problem...
Other solutions....use sd maid and clean all system, apps, and ghost files..
Do a davlik and cache wipe in recovery
And last effort do a davlik and cache wipe with a reinstall of your rom...
Keep in mind after each step your phone will use excessive battery because it will be adding files and moving things around... SO patience is important when cleaning and installing because it may take a few full discharges and charges before it settles down and gives you a good idea of what your battery life will be like
Also I am wondering... Two days with your phone on stock... But a whole day while rom'd...i am wondering...did you play with you phone as much when stock?... I know I didn't...:thumbup::thumbup:

Quick thing have you wiped both caches and fixed permissions? Sometimes that will do wonders when the phone is acting up.
Also I was just pointing out it sounded like you were giving attitude. I actually figured you were just frustrated at this point. I've seen the posts in beans thread. So I wanted you to clarify before getting flamed.
The community will get this fixed. Beans had great battery life when I ran it before switching back to Eclipse so it's something going in on your phone.

I have a great idea, get rid of the task killer or set it to manual. Task killers will destroy your battery life if set to auto kill.
Also do you have an SD card? Take it out for a few hours and see what the battery life is like. If it gets better then copy everything to your computer and format the card and copy it back.

Thanks for the pointers. I will respond to all the questions ( I think) here
I have done this previously (did not help)- suggested also by another response
1. Wiped Davlik cache and fix permissions
2. upgraded to 2.4.3 TWRP from 2.3.2
3. Wiped Davlik cache and fix permissions again (twice on 2.4.3)
4. I have not done anything with regard to the SD card- I will look at that after looking at the Wifi closer
In Wifi- I can see wifi direct share process in all in one toolbox but do not see an app- I would assume wifi is part of the kernel. I am not sure how to clean the cache or delete/reinstall the wifi direct share unless it's a .apk hanging around outside the /system/apps folder-update- i found it- cleared data and will let rthe phone run for a few hours
I did not play around with the Stock build from VZW- it was 2 days right out of the box with "normal" call use.
The reason I think it's a HW issue is that this si a replacement phone for the one the girlfriend cracked after having a new one from VZW for 20 days. That was the phone that could go 2 days on stock unaltered VZW. This I am sure is a refurb from the repair depot. I placed Beanstown 7 on it right after I got it (I practiced unlocking on the cracked original phone)

I have a great idea, get rid of the task killer or set it to manual. Task killers will destroy your battery life if set to auto kill.
Also do you have an SD card? Take it out for a few hours and see what the battery life is like. If it gets better then copy everything to your computer and format the card and copy it back.

Thanks for suggestion- Advanced Task Killer is set to disable (no auto kill already). I will look at SD card once i look at Wifi
Update this morning
Girlfriend used phone for maybe 30 minutes or so this morning. I have attached the better battery Stats
I noticed that Wifi is on and running most of the time- even though it is set to turn off when phone sleeps. Is the next step then to Starbucks or can I simply turn Wifi off
When i loaded Build10, I followed the instructions.
1. Wipe Data- I did not format data
2. Factory reset
3. Wipe Davlivk Cache and cache
4. Installed ROM
Manually turn off wifi. Also do you have another battery monitor app besides bbs? Ultimately though your phone is going into deep sleep so I'm not sure what going on

Ok will do- I do not have another app but happy to buy/try another one. I do have another battery as well.
She's out with the phone for a bit- do I need to fully charge and then turn off wifi or can I reset the battery stats (assume I can) and just turn off wifi?

Is that better? Bbs should tell you what's keeping it awake. I asked about sket monitor because I was wondering what your 1 partial wake locks was.

Just my two cents...i always use titanium or romtoolbox to delete maps as google maps was draining my battery.. Also kernel can make a difference..location servives and maps keeps wifi searching and almost constantly in use and if services on and wifi off they will keep trying to reconnect. I feel running maps is a battery waste. If i need directions i will google address. Call me old fashioned but ill read, read, understand the set my path..i prefer battery life
I get almost 48 hrs out of battery with 5hrs screen...only 24 with closer to 9hrs sscreen on, was half that with locations and maps running

[Q] GlanceViewMk using 723 MBs background data??

I was checking my data usage today and noticed that over the weekend I used ~750 MB of data. Looking closer, my phone says it was mainly due to GlanceViewMk. GlanceViewMk used 723MB of background data and almost 40 MB of foreground data. Over the weekend, I was out shopping and let my son use my phone. He was playing Dr Panda's airport, Temple Run, and Cut the Rope. In the 45 or so minutes he used it, my battery went from ~85% to basically dead. I thought it was a little odd at the time, but I think thats when it happened. He was right in front of me in the cart so I know he wasn't doing anything out the ordinary.
Any ideas why GlanceViewMk would use so much data? Luckily I still have unlimited data otherwise that would have been an overage. Some screenshots are attached.
Using HyperDrive ROM. Have not installed many apps lately or anything crazy.
Anyone have any thoughts?
That's weird I thought glance view was the feature where you wave your hand in front of the proximity sensor when the screen's off and it displays the time plus missed notifications. How could that use 700mb of data?

Thats what gets me. Did I have some spyware app or something? I actually loaded a new version of Hyperdrive since then and no more problems, but still worries me.

I doubt it but I really couldn't tell you what went on with that so weird.
Have you backed up and restored your data usage in the past?

No I try to only restore the basics when I put a new ROM on.

Hit data cap in just over a week...?

Hey all. Recently switched to T-Mobile and got the g2. I immediately rooted it to customize things how I wanted them. Everything I have been doing has been with WiFi enabled. I never turn it off, honestly. In just about 10 days, I hit my 3 gig data cap, and have no idea how. I was rooted, and thought my Rom could be part of the reason, so I KDZ flashed back to stock. Now all my data usage is wiped, but obviously still at data cap. Is there anyway I could take it into the store? It's going to look really bad on my end when I tell them I factory reset my phone because I hit data cap, but it just doesn't make sense. I never came anywhere close to 3 gigs of data on Verizon, and that was a whole months use with not much WiFi involved. A bit irritated right now.... any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your rom is indeed part of the reason you hit the cap so quickly. I've only got 2gb of data myself so I understand. I'd try a different rom, I wouldn't bother bringing it into a store as they will know your rooted unless of course your out of warranty but either way don't give them the benefit of them even knowing

Did you check to see what was using all your data before doing a reset?

You could try re-flashing the ROM and take a look at what's draining your data. I'm sure the ROM's creator(s) would like to know if there's a bug that is causing excess bandwidth usage.
This thread is worth looking at. It might be a setting you made or app you installed, or some setting/app in the particular ROM you installed that you enabled or is enabled by default. ghling's issue was that certain services were constantly trying to sync, but syncing was disabled because of something he installed because he didn't want those services, so it just kept trying to sync over and over and over, causing massive bandwidth usage.

This is his last post on that thread...
Well, it seems the denied access rights were the problem, after reverting them (or better: disable app ops for the play services) everything is back to normal. It's a bit strange that it took some days until the problem occurred, but that's how it sometimes is.
Thank you again for your help.

What does he mean by denied access rights? Thanks!
Not sure if this helps or not but I've noticed the rom I am currently running all of the sudden shows 4G and WiFi running at the same exact time. That seems to be a possible issue I think... I have to check my usage to be sure

You don't happen to be running SlimRom are you? I think that was the issue most likely. I was downloading a large KDZ, while on wifi, and all of a sudden my browser data usage jumped to 1.5 gig's out of no where. This was actual data usage, not wifi usage.
It might be worth to double-check with T-Mobile if you really actually hit your data limit. I heard some bad news about their business practices and I could imagine them trying to skim off some data bandwidth from people that would not hit their data limit. Just a thought ... I might be wrong, though

He used an app to deny access rights to certain Google services. Permissions is a better word, since that's what Android uses. He didn't want them to connect to the internet for syncing, but the app he used to deny permissions didn't stop the services from trying, which caused it to be constantly trying/failing, which used up his data allotment.
It's entirely possible that the ROM you flashed has some sort of syncing or updating issue with some app or service and is doing the same thing. You should have checked to see what was using all your data before doing a reset.
