So after finding out about the OTA update to 4.0, I decided to get rid of my custom rom, de root, and try it out. Seems good so far, but I haven't seen any info on rooting this yet. Anyone know if there is a way to do this yet? Or even a crazy guess as to when this will happen?

why on earth would you "deroot" just wait 24 hours to flash the rooted version then you wouldn't have to worry about that. the bootloaded has changed... unlikely anyone will be able to root. unless the CD works on 4.0

Bummer. I de rooted because in order to run an ics Rom I needed a custom kernel, and either the kernel or the Rom made the phone freeze up one in ten times I turned off the screen. Wasn't worth it to me.
To root the ota all you have to do is apply a custom recovery .IMG file via fastboot or a pg86img.zip file in bootloader. Then install via the new recovery Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip (google it, easy to find). Boot into the system and download busybox via the playstore and then install busybox via the app. That's it. You will have full root with busybox.

Or if s-off just replace what's in an ruu with the recovery/hboot to what u want and boot into bootloader and happy flashing

I'm new to this phone, coming from an epic 4g, e s off and hboot was confusing at first, but from what I understand I'm s on hboot 1.5. I will have to see what I can do when I have my computer.

Already ppl asking for root on the new update smh it might take a long time just like s-off for 1.5 or no time at all but I would just wate for a stock rooted Rom of the ota update
Phone:HTC Evo 3D CMDA
HTC Sense:3.6
Software number:MeanROM ICS v2.0
Kernel version:?????
Baseband version:1.06.00.1216
Build number:1.13.662.2_RC
HBOOT:1.50 S-off (juopunutbear)
Recovery:4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC 5
Cant get root access.
So while browsing yesterday I came across the news that ICS ota update for Sprint EVO 3D has started rolling out.
I was on Mean ROM ICS 2.4.
I immediately went into recovery did a superwipe , relocked the bootloader using fastboot and started installing 2.17 ruu so as to get ICS update OTA.
I was successful in doing on what I had planned to . Booted up into system got OTA update and upgraded to ICS.
Played around with it for some time before I got bored and decided I need to root it.
So I then went into fastboot...... Unlocked the bootloader again ... flashed cwm touch recovery and installed SU 3.0.** .zip hoping that I would be able to install busybox and get root access.
Tadaaaa surprise surprise !!!!!!!
Latest superuser version installed there but it was not helping at all.
Downloaded busybox but it wont install and no matter what I tried I didnt get root access.
Above that my phone has gotten slow now and I no more get smooth transitions across while scrolling .
I find myself in trouble now.
Could any one suggest how I could get root or perform and fresh install again.
Also I was unlocked hboot 1.5 s-on which got updated to hboot 1.58 I guess.
So now its unlocked hboot 1.58 S-ON
I am not habitual to the spiking during transitions and it for some reason annoys me. I could really use some help here.
Rooting 101- never, ever, ever, ever, ever take any OTA. Simple. As others have said recently and since rooting android started, wait a day for the awesome devs to post the rooted rom.

cant manage to get root

Well I must have gotten lucky. I decided i'd rather run stock without any root instead of having to deal with pulling my battery 20 times a day. Tried several roms, custom kernels made it faster, but weren't very stable. Now on stock ics rooted, don't see the big deal. It was easy to root again, and everything I was doing before works just the same. The only problem I'm having is getting dsp manager to work, but it didn't work on my custom rom either.
Perfectly satisfied with the ota.

Superuser 3.0.7 did not work for me. I went to http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and got 3.1.3 and it worked just fine. So far flashed a few things, and used root explorer, and its all been working.

Same result with 3.0.7 but for some reason if you go to http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and download 3.1.3 it works just fine
Just sharing my upgrade/root experience - was running ICS Cool Sense v7, S-OFF, HBOOT 1.04 ENG. Downloaded 2.17 PG86IMG from goo-inside.me site. Flashed that and it automatically re-locked my phone but kept S-OFF. Booted up with HBOOT 1.5, downloaded OTA and installed it. Now on HBOOT 1.58, unlocked phone again with HTCDEV. Flashed CWM Touch Recovery via Fastboot then Superuser 3.1.3 in Recovery. Full root - no issues.

Same here. Had all kinds of issues and tried 3.1.3 from Recovery about 30 minutes ago. Worked like a charm - full root.
P.S. I have always been stock with S-On so it works either way.
I did this with 1.5 hboot s off. Just unrooted and locked bootloader loaded up the 2.17 pg86img.zip and took the ota. Relocked bootloader and flashed cwm recovery and Su 2.3.6 (I think...) And I'm back in business with full root. works like a charm and very easy. Even for me and I'm a total noob. now I just gotta figure out how to add tweaks and remove bloatware.

You can unlock your htc legend at HTC DEV.
Once the new file is installed and the phone is s-off, how do I re-root the phone?
Exactly! Also my question! They want you to upgrade your Bootloader which will disable you from rooting (all methods I've heard of require old versions Bootloader).
Any solution before we dive into this WONDERFUL UNLOCKED REALM?
Hi, just signed up to HTC dev to see what's going on with bootloader unlock, I started the procedure but told me it wants to delete everything on my phone, bugger that.
This is HTC official root method, it says you can load custom rom's and change the recovery but it is still s-on to protect the radio and sim lock (network).
Now if u are not already rooted then its gonna make it hard, esspecialy to backup, however we still have revolutionary temp root to backup with titanium.
For those already rooted, I'm not sure if there is any advantage, except you can flash custom recovery, we have fakeflash so not much point IMO.
Oh, just realised it gives unrestricted access to /system folder so that might make it worth while after all..

Good question. I suspect it might only work with unrooted legends.
If that is the case its gonna be a big hassle, but not impossible.

wow wow wow WOOOW!!! I didn't expected this!!!!! I will unlock my bootloader and install the clockwork recovery ASAP!
For rooted legend you can make a nandroid, install the RUU, install a recovery (the .img recovery from the rom manager site) and restore the nandroid
Do you plan on doing it on yours?
I noticed that there is also a wifi security update out for the legend too,
The bootloader unlock is 3.15.405.5, and the wifi fix is 3.15.405.6, so I guess it has to be in that order or the bootloader unlock wont run.
Good,Now my phone has hboot unlocked, but is there a way to disable the security flag and finally get SOFF now ?
Stevenstrike,
Did you install that update on top of your cm custom rom?
Any problems at all?
No
Just find a HTC stock rom for your legend, then update the rom via OTA if needed, then try to apply the hboot update, after that use the htcsupertoolv3 to gain perm root, and if you want, flash cwm fastboot to access cwm as recovery.
Thanks,
Are you applying their Wifi security fix as well?

Never heard of that, besides my radio is already 7.13.35.05, so i think i dont have to apply this.
Edit : Link to gain Perm Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432074 (link is for wildfire S but also work for Legend)
and link to flash CWM : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244371&highlight=cwm ( then do a fastboot flash recovery <recoveryFile>.img )
Ah ok, I see that the Bootloader unlock is software version 3.15.405.5, security update is 3.15.405.6, does that make a difference or is it purely the radio that matters?

I still says S-ON but you can do anything that requires r/w permission on /system.
Tested with SU update, BusyBox installation, host write with AdAway.
Gees this is complicated, almost as hard and confusing as rooting hboot 1.01 in the first place.
I have downloaded the hboot 1.02 update, I'm wondering if you can just do that on its own on a rooted phone?
I just worry that it might do some real damage if you do, cause I don't think we can go back to 1.01 or other hboot later.

I have a completely stock 3D with hboot 1.5, s-on, software 2.17. I want to gain root access in order to flash custom roms and such.
I saw a walk through on how to do this via HTCdev bootloader. I've also read about downgrading to hboot 1.4 and achieving s-off.
What are the advantages of downgrading to 1.4 and achieving s-off vs. sticking with 1.5 and s-on by using the HTCdev method?
Well fort you want be registered as having messed with your device to prevent a void in your warranty. The others are you can flash without any programs needed to install a kernel also you can flash splash screens. Flashing radios is also a benefit of soff. But soff will allow you to actually brick your device vs having just bootloader unlocked.

Keep this in mind... S-off is great but you can fully permabrick your device with s-off, hard to do but it can be done. S-on blows but I'm pretty sure you can fix anything but a hardware failure with the unbrick method.

Since my roommate is doing it for me (his computers and computer knowledge are way more capable than mine) I let him decide which way he was going to do it. We ended up going with the HTC bootloader unlock.
We got it successfully unlocked through the bootloader but it still doesn't have root access. Like, apps that require root won't work and he can't get anything to flash on it. Suggestions?

I finally have root access and am currently running infected rom eternity and am super stoked!
reaper24 - Thank you for your input as well. I got the cwm 4... my roommate just tried to do something by going to one of the newer versions... Whatever it was he was trying to do didn't work and he went back to 4, so I'll definitely be sticking with that for now.
Next order of business... unlocking my friends' phone. She got hers in January (preloaded with hboot1.5 and 2.17). Can't get it to unlock via HTC bootloader unlock. I did read that there is a problem getting the newer ones that shipped with the updated software to unlock. I understand you need the 2.08 RUU. I found an active link and downloaded the file... Now what do I do with the thing?
Where did you find the working ruu I need one. I honestly think you just rename it to pg86img put it on the root of your sd card and hold down vol down and power. Once it loads into bootloafer it will scan the file and ask you if you want to flash it over.

If her phone has 2.17 then you can't run the 2.08. You need to run the 2.17 and then you can unlock it. I had to do that too.

I too am new to rooting my device. I rooted with RegawMod and love it but I can't get the OTA update to even work. I tried to download the jewel update from this website
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766628
I couldn't figure out what to open to make it work. I am new to the rooting so I could use some help.
thanks

If you're S-Off with bootloader unlocked all you have to do is grab a custom recovery and flash a superuser package. Since you're green here are some links.

Thanks! This is great! Going to check it out now.
Same here. I am rooted running MeanRom and today when the ota started, I cancelled it thinking it might mess something up with my root. I went to do the update this evening because I read users were getting better 3g speeds and what not, but when I go to install, it just reboots into recovery and so I followed with a reboot system in twrp and when it fully reboots, I get nothing.

I would say to just wait until the devs update the roms we are using with the ota. It seems as though I'm reading its doing something with the bootloader and installing a stock rom?

I'm thinking if I lock and unroot, I should be able to get update? I tried just going ahead with update but it keeps booting to twrp. I can reunlock and root after right? Im too novice to use s-off method.

I'm actually not on S-OFF and its doing the same. I would say unroot and then try updating. Once you unroot, it should go back to stock automatically

S-Off is something you guys will want eventually and updating the Hboot will more than likely keep you away from that. Just sit tight and wait on the Rom of your choice to be updated or download the rooted update within the development forum.
That's what I was trying to suggest doing. I'm not really interested in the update as of right now.... Sitting tight! Lol

Not Happy....post 1.22.651.3
Guess this is what I get for not understanding the update before I installed it. Used Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, thought I was good to go. I should have known something was amiss when the update was a HTC software update and not a Firmware update. Not only did it nix my root, I can't even get to recovery, it blocked it.
My current configuration is:
TAMPERED
LOCKED
Jewel PVT SHIP S-ON RL
So I am thinking I am pretty much toast. Not real interested if flashing ROMs at this point, just wanted Root.
This totally s__ks. And 3 days before they light up LTE in my area, ugh.
i unrooted and relocked phone by installing ruu in order to get ota update. i received update just fine. problem is ive tried to root again using regaw root and the other root method. regaw got me unlocked and recovery but when it got to installing root files said error cannot mount system as rw. hope this helps cause i am one who di try it by goin back stock. and thanks to all you devs. this is the GREATEST place to learn anything about any android phone. i just hopw you guys come up with a way foe me to root my phone soon. and oh yeah my phgone did accept the twrp recovery, i was wonderin if i could install some type of zip file thru twrp to regain root. no i do not have su, never got it when i tried to root

im also s-on
root
hey guys,
very similar situation -
my phone never got 'auto updates' turned off, so on saturday it accepted the update and installed over my rooted evo lte. i have no custom recovery or unlocked bootloader. the phone now does not receive calls/texts (can send/call out fine) i cannot get it to flash back tothe stock RUU b/c i keep getting 171 usb errors. Is there a way to reroot it on the 1.22 software? i figure if i can root it, i can then unlock the bootloader and install a previous version on it to get it back to OEM settings. if it doesnt fix my communication errors, i can at least take it to sprint to get a new unit.
thanks
Can someone help me root this phone?
I unlocked it via HTC method and I even flashed a recovery. But when the phone boots up, I am unable to use any super user permissions. So, I download root check and it says I am not rooted. What am I doing wrong?
I didn't have this pain on HB 1.5

I had also did that. Thing is, when I booted back up, my phone was in the state of not being rooted. Even after flashing the superuser zip.
So, what I did was flash the boot.img from the rom I wanted to flash, through fastboot.
Thank you for the help though. It's really appreciated.

Months ago I used HTCDev to unlock and flashed TWRP recovery and su-2.3.6.3.zip from this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I was underwhelmed with the MIUI ROM and got curious about Sprint's ICS update, so I relocked the bootloader and ran the 2.17 RUU.exe, then updated to 2.89 OTA. After that I could use my original HTCDev Unlock_code.bin to unlock the bootloader, but su-2.3.6.3 would not give me proper root access (verified with Root Checker app). Thankfully downloading Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and flashing it through recovery worked.
I now have root with the stock Sprint ICS. Why? Because I wanted to keep the 3D and Wimax functionality (i know, i know) while still being able to run TiBackup to freeze the goddamned pre-installed apps that everyone hates. I'm sure this is stated elsewhere in the forums, but I read your post before I resolved my issue so I thought I'd come back and reply just in case you or anyone else were still grappling with it.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me to root a brand new stok rom on the Sprint evo 3d!
Just for future reference when you download a super user zip, notice the letters next to superuser efghi those letters represent the past android os's (e)clair, (f)royo, (g)ingerbread, (h)oneycomb, and (I)cecream sandwhich. Always look for that if you plan to root a stock Rom.
Hi guys.
It's 2 days already I am trying to do s-off for my evo 3d. Maybe anyone got "up to date" thread where I can do this? My hboot is 1.49.0018, and GSM phone.
Because thread using hex and revolutionary method is out of date, and the main file PG86IMG.zip is no longer uploaded there.
Juopunutbear method requires stock RUU, but when I download from http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?developer=Shooter this version: RUU_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.28.401.1_Radio_11.77.3504.00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_262714_signed.zip I get wrong zip file when flashing. Name was too big for 4ext, but when I shorten name it's gives error.
Any ideas? :crying: Thanks..
EDIT: Got S-off, but have no root now..
You can't flash that through 4ext. You need to rename to PG86IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card. Then reboot into the bootloader and when it asks to update, hit volume up to say yes.
Make sure when you boot back up to delete the file from the sd card.
I believe your bootloader needs to be relocked before running the ruu as well.
fastboot oem lock
Personally I have seen many evo V users get s-off just by being on a stock based rom. Because there was no ruu available to them they went as close to stock as possible. Probably best to just follow the instructions though if you have that option.
Thanks Brian. Actually I did just like you said, but apparently that RUU version had 1.53.0007 hboot, so now I am on stock RUU with 1.53.0007 hboot.
Gonna try juopunutbear method first if I manage to install linux first haha.
Good luck! It's not too hard to make the live dvd/usb. There is a program you can download that will set it all up for you if you go to the ubuntu website. They have all the instructions for a live ubuntu dvd/usb.
So I finally made S-off using wire trick But got new problem so gonna ask here..
I am still on stock RUU, and I installed 4ext using Play store, but it's not working cause it says I need root. I installed busybox and SuperSu, but SuperSu won't work, it says: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU can not install it, This is a problem!
I had root before I know for sure.. Also I can't go into recovery from bootloader because recovery does not exist. Can I flash 4ext through the bootloader renaming it PG86IMG.zip or it's not how it works?
Just downloaded several "root checker" apps, and all of them says I have no root access.
Thanks!
Edit: my hboot is 1.53.7777 now if that matters.
Edit2. I am on stock ROM, maybe that's why it does not work..?
EDIT: I've fixed everything, thanks.
Sorry, was asleep but glad to see you got it! I'm assuming you had to flash Super user to get the binaries installed? The app is just an interface.

Yes I flashed recovery using adb and then SuperSU using recovery And my root access came back.
