Changing the mode from gsm to umts doesn't matter. Your sms function should still work. You can change this mode by going to system setting press more than mobile network.
Just factory restore your phone from settings. Make sure you backup your data first.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick answer,
unfortunate it did not work. I tried the sim card in an other phone and it did not work there either so it´s the sim card that´s the problem, apparently very unusual according to my service provider. Thy will send me a new sim card and that will take care of the problem.
Thank you

I have now tested the sim card in another phone and it did not work to send sms only recive.
Got a reply from Sammy. They said go to message settings and input the carrier SMS number which they provided to me. Did so and everything now works.

So the problem is either the sim card or your network provider.

I've had this issue on SGS (going back to GB) and SG3 with 2 different providers Vodafone sand Orange and different roms. No one was able to fix it, not their service, not XDA. My fix Go SMS Pro. Something about having a higher priority.

My mom has a Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. It's not rooted. From this afternoon I'm not able to send any SMS, but I can receive them. Incoming and outgoing calls are fine. I tried in both stock messaging app and also in Go SMS. It will say it's sending and after a while it gets failed. The network customer care people told to add the messaging center but I'm not able to find such settings in messaging app.
Also the call logs are messed up. If I call someone now it shows as "tomorrow" and not the current time. System time is proper.
Can someone please tell how to fix this?
Thank you.

That option would be in the PC suite in PC right? Never had looked into that software. I'll try and report back. Thank you.

No, Update Service is another application from Sony Mobile.
It is different from PC Companion.
Try the Update Service, link http://www-support-downloads.sonymobile.com/Software%20Downloads/Update_Service_Setup-2.11.12.5.exe
Thank you for the speedy reply. I tried with different sim card now and the messages are going in that. So its an network issue. I shall follow up with the network operator.
Regarding the call log issue a restart fixed it I guess. If it still persist then I shall try the update service.
Thank you again
PS. Feeling like an idiot now for opening a thread for a simple problem. Actually the call log made me desperate

I play around with settings in phone information in *#*#4636#*#*
now my phone can't send sms, but still can receive sms from other ppl. The weird thing is,i can make a call.
just Can't send sms
So.... any ways to repair this problem?
Thx

Yeay!!! Fixed now. Thx you all.
Woohoo!!
here's what happened.
I found out that my smsc number in phone information is 00. So that's wrong. Then i go Googling for my service provider's smsc number on the net and found this
+60193900000
So I've copied to phone info, but it turns out that it can't be updated. So i use my friends number, which have the service, did the 4636 thingy, go to his phone info, updated his smsc and copied the numbers appeared to my phone info. The number is different from what i found in google even though it's smsc. I don't understand a hell about it.
But the number appeared on my friend's can be updated.
So that a good news. Next i went to Go Sms's settings -> send settings, paste the number i found in Google earlier to the custom smsc number. And valla, now it works! Im back to my sms-ing life! woohoooo! Thx a lot!!! Love xda family. Hehehee
thx for hearing me out.
peace yo

Let me guess. You messed or pressed refresh on phone information>smsc right? Made that mistake and went to my service provider and they just gave me the right code
Edit: using stock rom i've input the code to 'message centre' in message>menu>settings

If i beckup my current rom, go back to stock, change the settings, then restore my current rom back, so, it'll be back to my unchanged settings right?
I've searched my service provider's smsc. +60193900000
But when i put it in the phone info in *#*#4636#*#*, and update it, it shows update error...

I've been having two major problems with my S3. Aside from the unstable data, now the sms stopped working, I can no longer send/receive text messages. I checked the settings and found out my message center number is blank, not sure if it has something to do with it, if so does anyone know the message center number for straight Talk at&t sim? Thanks for all the help!
Ps. I am on the wanamlite rom v2.2
Call customer care of atnt and ask them for sms service center num. Its a must. It shoudnt be blank. As for data it can be a network problem or software or hw related. You have to check wether cnctn is stable on other atnt phn. If yes then flash a stock rom see if that solve prob. If no goto service center and ask them to look through

Hi
I updated my s3 a week ago to 4.3 and now i can't call. I have no problems with SMS, everything is OK only when i try to call, i lose the signal for 10 sec. I tried lower versions but without luck. I also tried EZ unlock but it doesn't work.
Anyone any idea please ?
Thanks a lot in advance
Factory reset and flash the latest 4.3 with odin, if still the same then probably a hardware fault.

Sorry, let me explain it again. So, if i try to call someone, i hear nothing, and my signal is gone for 10 sec. My when i send an sms to someone, it's working fine. I can send and receive messages. Skype is working perfectly. So it's not a voice hardware problem

I think the problem is that you keep losing signal. That is why you can't make voice calls, but SMS can be sent and received whenever the signal is back up again.
But the solution remains the same as @JellyYogurt said: flash stock 4.3 via Odin.
PS: Voice calls and skype calls are different since most people use skype on wifi, not their data plan.
