Hello everyone!
I believe that a lot of people were able to upgrade their OS to ICS without rooting.
Now, I just got a factory unlocked phone thru Amazon and was excited to update it until... I found out that there's no update for my device. I had no idea that only *certain* Xperia S' will be upgradable!
Does anyone know if Sony will eventually release ICS for ALL Xperia S devices, or is it only for certain countries?
FYI, I believe my phone is a German release since it was set to German language as default. And the SI# is 1257-2737. I have T-Mobile USA.
Thanks in advance.

Eventually you will get as its rolled out globally.
Meantime you can also flash other region firmware. Just go to the general section of this forum and there is a sticky thread which consists of all the firmware related stuff.

So it's 100% confirmed that eventually, Sony will release ICS for the rest of the Xperia S devices from other regions? If so, that's really great news.
I don't want to root (or do anything) my phone just yet as I'm worried that I might get the yellow tint issue. I'll wait a while first.
Isn't the yellow tint a hardware issue?

If you don't have yellow tint now, it won't appear later. And yes, it's 100% confirmed that all devices will get the update eventually.
Yeah it would be a hardware issue for the yellow tint, but I've heard various stories where Sony refused to repair people's device because they have been modded in any way (sorry, lack of vocab here, I'm new to the rooting world). I just don't want to risk it yet.
Also, I thought the yellow tint can appear eventually?
Especially if your screen gets hot a lot or something? (I'm not too knowledgeable on this issue).

It appears immediately when the screen gets hot, to test it, just play some Dead Trigger or whatever other game has tons of HD graphics. Reparing rooted devices seems to be fine if you're not located in India...
I was playing Dead Trigger for 5 minutes. Turned it off and checked the temperature; it was at 38C.
Looked at my screen with the flashlight app thing, and I don't see a yellow tinge... however... I might be seeing things, but I think I see some slight yellow gradient near the bottom of the screen.
Some others say that the yellow tinge starts showing up later =s
I'll just wait and see.
Thanks for the replies by the way :good:
The best app for me to see my yellow tint is Adobe Reader as it has a white background. My tint only appeared a month after buying my phone and I used the phone many times over 40 degrees.
However upgrading to ICS using flashtool will not void your warranty. There will be a guide in the general forum somewhere. Sorry I can't give you a link as I'm on my Xperia S now.

I rooted my X10a to R2BA026 a while back using the main rooting method.
It looks like there's a possibility I may have to get my phone serviced or replaced by Rogers, as my screen has started to display yellow tint along the edges when viewing light/white backgrounds.
If I do end up needing to get it serviced/replaced, I figure it'll likely be best if I return the phone to a Rogers ROM in order to avoid any issues with it being rooted.
How would I go about doing so?
1. Download the flash/unbrick tool:
http://hotfile.com/dl/44983907/9d54b5e/XIOFUB.rar.html
2. Download the decrypted Rogers Rom (R1FA014)
http://hotfile.com/dl/43225669/598add6/a_WWE_R1FA014_DEK.zip.html
Follow the instructions in the Flash/unbrick HowTo file.
About the yellow tint, where exactly are you noticing it? Is it the top where the ear piece is? or the bottom where the keys are? Or the left side or right side?
If you are going to service it with Rogers, can you update the status for us? I'm on Rogers and i THINK i see some yellow tint issues as well.
I resurrected an old thread on the yellow tint on the X10 General forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718196.
As I stated there, the yellowing is most noticeable on the bottom of the screen, though I can also see it on the right side of the screen.
Alright.. when you take it in, please update the status for us!
Thanks!

I might hold off a bit, as the tint is less prominent now than it was a few hours ago. May become more visible as the phone warms up, as I was tethering with Barnacle when I noticed it, and then disabled Barnacle for a while before checking it just now.
If it's anything like my old iPAQ with Rogers last year, once you get an RMA number from Rogers, they send you a new unit, and give you a few weeks to ship the defective unit back. A good process, as you're not without phone for any period of time.
I'll keep you updated either way.
Thanks..
But don't they just ship your phone to repair rather than giving you a new unit?
When I dealt with Rogers Tech on my defective HTC Dream they sent out a refurb of the Dream with a UPS call tag to either take the defective phone (boxed and placed in the shipping bag) to a UPS store or have the UPS come pick it up.
Pretty simple really and you're not without a phone.

Yeah, that's what they did with my iPAQ when I reported to them that the USB connector had become so loose I could no longer charge the phone.
I have the same issue with my X10. Rogers sent me two replacements but they both had the yellow/white blotches along the bottom of the screen. Looks similar to when you apply pressure to an LCD screen. It's only visible on white backgrounds for the most part. I've just decided to live with it, although it certainly annoys me at times. Not to much else they were willing to do for me at that point.

Sucks, but good to know.
In which case, I'll probably hold out for a bit.
I sent my rooted phone back to rogers and they didn't give me any problems. I asked one of the customer service guys and he said android phones are meant to be open source, so it it's fine if it is rooted. lol.
Good to know.
Just to let you guys know, my friend got a new white X10 from Rogers store a couple days ago. Her X10 already has the new R2BA020 firmware on it so it should be the new batches. The new X10 that she got also have the weird wavy pattern on the bottom or 'tint' issue.
So I am convinced that pretty much all X10 are like that..
or try this method its easier and it works. The flash tool bricked my phone.

I am curious to know why I don't encounter the issues/problems that are mentioned here, eg . wifi disconnection, screen flickering, long charging hours, etc. even before the ics upgrade.
The reason I'm asking is that my friend is coming to HK from the U.S. and wants to buy the Sony Tablet S. My concerns, apart from the region for future update, are the above issues associated with the Sony sold overseas (local forum here did mention these issues but not as often as here).
My tablet is made in China and is not rooted.
Would those who have issues with the tablets please advise where is your device made and whether it is rooted or not.
Appreciate that.
p.s. there is now promotion in HK when buying Sony tablets, US$40 supermarket voucher and free cover. I got a free cover when I bought my tablet s in Feb this year.
I got all those problems AFTER ICS upgrade. No issues before I upgraded.
Not rooted device.

Is yours made in China? It's shown on the lower left hand corner at the back. I don't know if all are made in China.
I havent experienced any software problem with this tab. Bought in India and still on Honeycomb (Latest Version).
Same
Hi, i got almost same problems.
I bought tablet in Malaysia and before upgrate it was awesome, i couldnt see any problems.
After update, i have wifi issue, screen cutting (when i use multitasking), it is very slow. browser always FC both chrome and stock
I guess it is related to software, ics is not ready for tablets i guess.
No root, everything stock.
i cant switch ON my tablet s ..press power button few times and screen still blank ..battery is fully charged.
Do reset. That helped me. (my table is made in China)
pin in the reset hole - it's like taking out the battery and re-inserting.
as the title says, somehow i have activated the scrolling news info on the lockscreen and want to turn it off.
how do i do it?
Hi there Hpsauce this is very simple
Settings > Security > Lock screen options > turn off information ticker > done
if you get any problems let me know.

hope i dont get in trouble for listing stuff here lol...but i really appreciate your help.
I have a gs3 that was supplied by orange uk. I dont know if it has orange specific software on it (the box and phone seem unbranded) but im having several issues with it.
I have been trying to ask the question if i have the latest firmware or if there is one i can update to in a bid to solve the issues i have.
It seems i dont have the option on the phone (under the about phone section) to manually check and kies says no update available however i would be happy to flash with odin if i knew there was something latter that i could use as im getting to the point where ive nearly had enough of the phone.
if there are options to sort it out then willing to try as there are things that i really like about it.
will post a screen shoot with the fimrware info etc and anything you know about it (dont worry if you dont) would be great.

regarding the branding when you boot your S3 is there an orange boot screen?
Ok so I looked over your screenshot and there are difference in are settings as you can see here, looks like are kernel versions are different.
And what are these problems you've been having, as that may be just down to the device.
sorry for answering your questions with more but it will help me answer your questions
SkillfulMmd said:

And if you could send a screen shot with your kernel number and stuff that would be great, I received a firmware update today but im un-branded so that may have something to do with it as branded devices are normally behind.

again thanks for the quick reply
does the screen shot i posted prior to your post not give that information or do i need to look elsware for it?
No my phone does not have any orange splashscreen or any branding on the phone itself (however it was supplied direct by orange). It came in a normall samsung box with no orange stuff all over it however it was sealed with orange sticker on it.
problems so far are:-
1) very laggy in and out of app to homescreen.
2) lots of 'sorry not responding' in various apps (video player, messaging etc)
3) inconsistant battery drain....yesterday i got through the whole day with 50% spare (unplugged at 6.30, charged at 10.45pm) today i was down to 25% by 2.00pm (unplugged at 6.30) nothing different done in usage.
there have been other things but these spring to mind at the moment.
Have to be honest and say its really ruining the exsperience at the moment. My htc one s is so smooth and quick. I had the gs3 on preorder and really looked forward to it (knowing how good sgs2 was) had high hopes for this phone. I really think lots of these problems are possibly down to being quad core as i owned the htc one x for a week and had similar issues.
I'm to sure about your handset it may be unbranded then, you will have to ring Ornage and find out though.
And yeah I updated my post as you posted your as I wasn't expecting you to post a screenshot so quick.
and as far as the issues go, I haven't heard of any of them in the S3 yet other than the UI redraw issue. The battery will need to be recalibrated by the sounds of it this is easy enough to do if you would like to do that?

thanks again for your help
a guy on another thread has said that i have orange branded firmware on it and thats why i dont have the option to manually check for update. He has said i need to flash to the latest uk generic branded firmware.
I am going to give this a try (downloading at the moment) just hope i dont have problems with the radios etc.
thanks for the help with the battery issue however i am assuming that this will all be reset when i flash?
Yeah then you can re-calibrate it and it should all be good.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help mate,
good luck
thanks mate.
I was just wondering how many of you have this issue
I bought a Z2 tablet having these issues and returned it. After some waiting I got a new one but with same problems.
So I went to the store again to get a new one and it is the same as the other two.
Only the one you can try out in the store is working ok, as you can see in the pictures
and here is a link for touch screen issue.
it seems like its gone now, but maybe it will come back, who knows
www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4yn745_1lM
Yeah, that sucks.
We here at xda are an obsessive bunch. Don't feel bad. There are batches, and they must've received a crappy bunch. Happy I am not suffering from this. But always raises eyebrows.
Yeah, I got a Galaxy Tab S now and I think I'm going to keep it.
After the update to the latest firmware and a repair through Sony PC companion nothing changed.
I could not turn off the alarm the other morning.
Very frustrating!
So I returned my Sony Z2. Even my Chinese Catee CT100 can handle alarms and touch screen, although it costs 45$.
Very disappointing Sony.
Customer care doesn't even answer to my mails, even thought they said they would.
I live in Croatia. So if you are buying Z2 tablet there, beware.
The providers VIP and T-mobile have good Z2s that you can try out at shops, but thats the first batch that came.
If you buy one, you will get these ones with yellow/red tint and touchscreen problems.
Also the one I tried yesterday at Sony centar in Zagreb (Arena centar) is yellow/red, so I gave up.
Goodbye Sony!
Maybe till Z3 10"... we'll se...
We got the information by early November, but still nothing happened. Anyone with some information when this is gonna be released?
There was new update for japanese version 2 days ago...not sure if its patch or new version https://xpericheck.com/SOG09/24936126
I ve got US 62 model and the only thing i ve got so far is security update.
Hope they fix wifi because its awfull at least on mine.
nope not even a new security patch
that's Sony guy's
I have the Xperia 5 IV XQ-CQ72 and i got update notification but still on Android 12. no 13 yet.
I have Xperia 5 IV XQ-CQ72 too. No 13 either, but I just bought the phone (Black Friday acquisition). I'm new to Sony family, previously I had a few Vivo phones. So far I'm impressed. It's amazing how Japanese squeeze such a lot of electronics into a small phone, even a 5Ah battery, and everything works flawlessly.
I'm glad that I don't experience two issues usually mentioned in phone reviews - overheating and unreliable fingerprint.
I don't have a chance to really test the camera, though. But on the first sight it looks more promising than I expected. After all, I came from Vivo.

The phone is great, except it kills apps from background too fast. That's a software issue thankfully and can be resolved with a software update.

I've been chatting with Sony support about this and providing whatever videos they ask for as evidence. Hopefully they address the problem since I've given them logcat dumps demonstrating the issue.
I just got info from Sony support today that one of the issues I've reported should be fixed in the Android 13 release due by the end of next week (Dec 23). I'm in the US with the 62 model.
I just flashed the 64.1.A.0.857 via newflasher ...
Downloaded the firmware via XperiFirm.

For that matter - since Sony openly lets us unlock the bootloader, OFW updates are a full-go for us and won't impede rooting ability, right?

1.- Only for international devices. Sony doesn't allow bootloader unlock for US devices.
2.- As far I know, modified devices (unlocked bootloader) lose OTA. I had to manually update using Xperiafirm and newflasher

By the way, I'm infinitely glad I picked one up in Japan over the US because this scrutiny is ridiculous! That said, I'm not rooted just yet and I'd have to prep a full file (mostly in-phone backup of pics) backup first, so I'm not rooted yet and seems like jumping to 13 first makes the most sense.
That said, I seriously gotta tip my hat to Sony for just allowing us to do entirely as we please with their phones while literally every other brand is cockblocking our freedom. Over the years, I missed having a task killer soooo much to save random background apps slowly tugging at the battery and then all the magisk plugins like ad blockers.
