IS the Nook Tablet worthwhile - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hello folks,
I have a question regarding the Nook tablet. I was making a delivery to a customer this morning and he has a Nook 16GBTablet. We got to talking and he indicated that he was going to sell it since his wife didn't use it. It looks like new physically and I am considering obtaining it for one of my grandsons, basically so I can get my Nook Color with CM7.2 on it back from him. Is the Nook Tablet a worthwhile barter or would something else be better? I bought a Samsung Tab2 7" tablet for a younger grandson a couple of weeks ago and he really likes it, But I don't think I can get a deal like I got for the Samsung. I only gave $169 for it new, still sealed in the box and I doubt I will find another deal like that as I'm pretty sure the fella sold it to me for less than he paid for it. I'm getting off track here, what I need to know is if the Nook Tablet is even a worthwhile Andriod tablet or would I be better off waiting a bit for the new, different brand tablets to come out?

Check swappa.com and see the prices for the tablets. Maybe you get to catch a good deal, I bought my Samsung captivate there and loving it. The nook is worth it in my opinion and the deal breaker is the sdcard slot . Nexus 7 temps me but no sdcard slot no way I buy it, anyways for what I do the nook tablet is enough. Tho I know kids love games and probably that is what they do in their tablets more than anything and the nook does a decent job with kids games, heavy games not that good.
Tablets with Tegra 2 chip is gamers glory and with dual/quad cores is a dream but your budget is not enough.
Good luck!

The nexus 7 is ( in my humble opinion ) the product of the year. The other major producers were surprised and knocked back on their butt. Now they have to answer back with something equal or better. Then there is the argument that it is 'not' just the product but the 'exosphere' along with the product. Lastly, the Nook is a fine performing tablet.

The Nook Tablet, was made to be a reader, but the xda community saw it to having more potential then BN wanted it to. The Nook Tablet has gone far from becoming a full-fledged reader into a usable, 7-inch Android tablet wonder. The Nook was at the bottom along with it's brother in technology, the Kindle Fire, as it was a reader, but it has pushed to the top, and now is one of the most popular tablets out there. I have a Nexus 7 myself, and it is amazing, but was at the top from when it was born. The Nook, and the great devs of this forum, had to work it up there, while BN did not help even once, except for the kernel. We even have our own nearly working kernel, thanks to Rebellos, Chris, and Kuzma. We have succeeded in reaching the latest Google experience, Jelly Bean AKA Android 4.1, and the devs hope to keep working and catching up with Google. As the problems slide off the radar, more devs have appeared. The Nook may not be a Nexus 7, but it sure damn does the job like it.

From what I've heard/read/seen I could make such list of tablets in this class, from best to slighty worse
1) Nexus7
2) Nook Tablet
3) Kindle Fire (note this has got better Android support than NookTab for now <points at Hashcode>)
4) Nook Color
There are for sure others, but I don't know others.
Also, if you want to use it as overpowered Android device someday - get 16GB version, it has got 1GB of RAM, while 8GB ver got 512MB of RAM and it might be not enough for some games, more browser tabs, etc.

Thanks for the opinions.
If I and the owner decide to work out a barter I may do the deal. Cash purchases are not many, but I do quite a bit of bartering and it is a 16GB Tablet. Have a 14 almost 15 year old grandson that could make good use of it I believe. Don't know how savvy he would be to rooting the Nook though he is really good with computers, he fixes all my messups.

When the reboot bug gets squashed expect lovely things coming along.
I get 1.9Mpixel/sec on this test on default clocks.
http://www.ziilabs.com/products/software/mandelmark.php
0.1Mpixel/sec more than Galaxy nexus o.o
Imagine 2x1.2ghz and gpu from 308mhz to 384mhz that can be easily be achieved without any problems as our platform 2.3ES defaults to 1.2ghz.
Is not implemented yet because of the 1st priority is to fix that reboot bug!
Also new drivers for graphic card are release from ti DDK1.9 i guess more speed will be possible also with them implemented
http://www.omapzoom.org/?p=device/t...it;h=ad17249821001789f159a5d5c542302e5f38cd2e
When our developers finish with this board you will have nothing to be jealous from Nexus7.
You would be able to play anything you throw at it
Edit: 2.2 Mpixels/sec on DDK1.9

[Q] Touchpad still a good choice now?

Hi everyone!
I'm reading lots of good things about the HP Touchpad, and I'm planning to take a tablet just these days.
I was comparing the new Amazon Kindle Fire and the new Nook Tablet (aka. Nook Color 2) which are about to come out this month.
Unfortunately I'm from Italy so Amazon will not be a good option for me at last...
Suddenly I stumbled upon this HP Touchpad: lots of good reviews, lots of happy feedbacks, 9.7'' (which would be awesome for me as I'm gonna study on it lots of university pdf lessons too), good development community (Dual Boot WebOS and Android? Awesome!), CM support, all made me think it should be my best choice, but...
I'm just recently aware of the fact that HP Touchpad production is discontinued now, and so I'm really worried about HP's warranty/support of the product if I'd buy it now.
Also I'm worried about future updates (from development community mainly), I'd really like to develop for Android OS on this tablet if I'm gonna buy it.
I'm not a big fun of cameras and gps (I have another smartphone and real camera for those), so the lack of those is not a problem for me.
Also, my budget is ONLY around 200-230 bucks, not even near 300 bucks.
Finally, would you suggest this HP Touchpad to someone that's gonna buy a tablet NOW, is it still a good choice?
If the answer is yes, could you please explain why and suggest where to buy for worldwide delivery?
If not, could you please explain why in details and what would you suggest instead?
Thanks in advance!
It's funny how nobody actually answered this topic
At last, I managed to get a Touchpad for myself, spent around € 170 (yeah I'm talking in my own currency), which is totally worth it!
First day I updated WebOS to version 3.0.4, installed Preware with new kernel and governor at 1,5 Ghz.
Later on the same day, I installed the last CyanogenMod alpha release with SOD fix.
Guys, what can I say...this device is totally awesome!
I've tried lots of times the iPad 2, and also the new Galaxy Tab 10.1, and this Touchpad really is on the SAME level of experience (especially once you "unlock" the 1,5 processors).
I must say, WebOS for multi tasking and productivity, is far more professional and has really better performance than Android (and potentially could have been on same level of iOS if other nice updates would have come along), it's a real pleasure to use it.
Not to mention that the CyanogenMod is actually feeling as a real Beta, and Android on this Tablet is awesome too.
For ~ $200 this is a real bargain.
I don't even worry about WebOS future nor HP future anymore, as ICS has come out now and CyanogenMod's team will surely surprise us with a cool Alpha release the next 1-2 months or so (hoping).
And if anything goes wrong, the WebOS Doctor is the key for not breaking your warranty almost 99% of the times.
It's really difficult to break this Tablet from what I've seen.
I just hope, if anything really goes wrong on hardware side, that HP support for warranty will be good enough, hoping it will be available here in EU aswell.
If any of you knows anything about it, please share!
Final words: if you don't have it, take it!

Current WebOS works well in multitasking, but the original one was really slow. Few cards opened and you literrally had issues with typing on virtual keyboard, really annoying stuff, even on overclocked (1.5GHz) version. Android was working way better then, felt perfectly smooth and so on, but for now, since it drains battery more and has some WiFi connectivity issues WebOS is just fine ;-)
Looking forward to ICS to get it's full potential.
I'm very pleased with the support of HP for TouchPad. I live in France and I'm a very lucky man because I could buy 4 TP in fire sale: 1 16GB, 1 32GB and 2 64GB. I have 1 64GB sent to repair center in Hungary because of the cracks, after 1,5 month I haven't yet seen any cracks, 1 16GB sent 2 times to repair center because of the touch screen (after the first repair, the problem couldn't be solved). Normally the tablet returns back in 10 days (by UPS), and totally free

Thanks a lot man!
This is the answer I was looking for since I bought the TP
If I wasn't before, now I'm totally convinced I've done the best choice
I've just bought a Belkin case for iPad, and not so surprisingly it fits perfectly for Touchpad!
Even the holes for ports/buttons are at same positions
Sooooo happy with my touchpad. I was going to buy a Kindle fire, but when I saw the touchpads going for the same price on Ebay, I knew this would be the better deal.
Plus,I really like webOS. It works flawlessly on my work's wifi. Android devices trend to drop connection fairly often.

the touchpads in raw bang per buck is better than the fire and nook combined. you're looking at a 1.5ghz dual core processor that was underclocked to 1.2ghz for marketting purposes.
the IPS screen alone is worth 100 bucks in supply costs
and 32gb of space? for 150bucks? done deal imo.
as it is so cheap now nothing will stop me to buy it!

I am running dual boot webos and cm7. I will never be more happy. My sister has nook color, and I have used it. My tp beats it to dust becoz of the speed and screen to name a few things. I have heard good reviews about kindle fire but still its e reader with customized and limited version of android which again will have to cracked to get full android experience. Nook tablet seems to be good but its still 7 inch screen.
I know u can run Ubuntu and android on tp right now. It looks like tp hardware is like hd2, means we will b able to run many different OS on it.

[Q] Need help deciding on NT purchase

Hi, everyone,
So I was SO close to buying the NT yesterday. Almost pulled the trigger, then my friend started mentioning other comparable tablets for slightly higher prices, and I decided to wait a week or two and mull it over first.
Basically, what I'm looking for is a tablet that has to be under $320, and it has to be AT LEAST as powerful (CPU/RAM-wise) as the Nook Tablet. I'd like it to be pretty customizable (the NT isn't very good at this, yet). I'd like to be able to get as close to stock-UI as I can, and ICS would be AWESOME eventually.
So I've started looking into the HTC Flyer 16gb wifi. However, for some reason today it seems it's not being sold on Amazon anymore. Interesting.
My friend is kinda... not very techy, but he follows tech rumors like crazy (he thought the iPhone 4s would be the iPhone 5 and have a 3D screen or some stupid sh*t, haha), so I can't really trust him, but he says that the Asus Transformer Prime is coming out on the 8th, so the current Transformer will drop down to $300. That seems like an amazing deal, too good to be true. Also, 10 inches might be a little big for me... I actually REALLY like 7 inches. It's the perfect size: not too small but not too big.
Anyway, if it comes down to it, the NT is just fine. However, to me it seems that the Nook Tablet is 50% Nook and 50% tablet right now. I want 100% tablet. Of course, if the bootloader is ever bypassed, that's all you need, and that'd be awesome.
But if I had to buy a tablet tomorrow based on those specifications, do you have any recommendations? Nothing wrong with NT, just thought I'd explore options so I don't feel consumer's remorse.
(if this thread somehow goes against rules, I'm very very sorry. if it does, report the hell out of it, and I'll take my noob question elsewhere )
Your name fits your post. Best choice for ICS 7" tablets are the acer and samsung and even the kindle fire. I'm willing to stick it out with the Nook Tablet.
Based on your specs: do NOT get the nook TABLET.
It is unlikely to ever get ICS/Honeycomb at this point (which means NO tablet apps ever) and even CM7 is a big questionmark.
Kindle Fire and Nook COLOR are your cheap alternatives.
Otherwise, you should look at the Asus, Acer, HTC, ... tablets. (though they obviously are more expensive than the Fire or the Nook COLOR)

Cheap tablet

I'm going to buy one... Thinking about the n5zero (5inch) or the nova 7 paladin (7inch), I'm buying just for playing some games, read some book, and flash a lot of roms.... I'll have any problem to flash roms or root? These things came with the boatloader locked or not? I'll have any problem with this? Or it's going to be normal and easy as a normal device? (I'm not a noob, I know how to root, flash roms... I have same experience... But just to be sure...)
Ah, if you have another idea for a nice tablet in the same price (60- 120 dollars) it will be welcome...
Thanks a lot and sorry for the bad english...

Wait until later on in the year, around April - May. nVidia and ASUS are releasing a tablet for $249 with Tegra 3 (Quad-Core, of course), 1GB of RAM, and it's got a nice resolution of 1280x800.
The idea of cheap tablet may sound tempting, but there wont be developing community backing it up. So in the end you have a device with same android version forever.
Go for big manufacturers like asus, samsung, motorola.
Refurb Nook Color can be had for $129 and makes for a nice little tablet, I'm running CM9 nightlies on one as we speak, it's got a really good dev support / following.
I'll second the nook color. If you can get a refurbished one for under $150, it will beat the pants off of anything else in that price range. The display is one of the best at any price, and the build quality is exponentially better than any of the Chinese tablets.
You mention flashing custom roms - the cheap Chinese tablets don't usually have any. If you are really lucky, the manufacturer might put out an update or two. The nook color, on the other hand, has dozens of custom roms and tweaks already and plenty of people still working on more. Check the nook color development section yourself and see what I mean.
I have a arnova 10 G2 , I brought from carphone werehouse for 135 pounds.
I have added all the google staff to it ( archos hate google ) its fab .
Is it a cheep tablet , yes.
Do i look at Emails etc only on it , yes
Does it have the same power as my Desire...a wee bit less!!
Wil I put ICS on it.. one day !!
You should consider the Kindle fire. I'd also suggest looking at the htc flyer. Its a little above your price range but I think it's a great tablet. At $120 your goIng to get what you pay for, a really lousy tablet that will be a waste of money because it sucks so much. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get a useable tablet.
You should save your money, at that price point you will get an unusable POS that no custom ROM can fix.
If you can find an BNIB HP Touchpad for $100-$200, then I would grab that sucker. It runs 1.2 ghz by default, and can be overclocked to 1.7 (1.9 works too, but its unstable), and it's dual core! It's super fast with android on it, and currently has a couple unofficial builds of cm9 running smoothly on it. If you don't want to wait, the hp touchpad is a great choice. Gotta get it brand new though, as they've been discontinued and "repaired" units often involve cracks next to the speaker.
Some no name tablets will see little to no developer support so watch out for that. For your budget I would consider a Nook Color refurb. It has pretty decent dev support.
I have a no-name tablet with nice specifications for the price (Cortex A9), but it doesn't have community support. It's a pity because you can get bored easily.
kindle fire can be rooted and use android
Yeah.. I'm getting the kindle fire... The touchpad is to big for me..

Nook Tablet, imo.
I have one. $250, double the specs of Kindle Fire.
It's fully cracked now, I'm running a fully-working CM7 on it.
Also, I think ASUS' $250 Tegra 3 tablet is a myth. They just teased it to stop people from spending money on Nook and KF.
And if it ever gets released, that price won't be awesome at that point anymore. By that time those specs won't be anything special.

Nook Tablet for 199$ @ebay

Guys there a deal for today at ebay.com for Nook Tablet from B&N that gives it for only 199$
yep.. couldnt refuse at that price point.. they got rid of the coupon.. so just $199 outright.. so saves on taxes if your state requires collecting it.. debated.. but i just cant say no to a deal like that.. loved the original NC.. was a solid piece of kit.. so i know i'll love the tablet..
I would get it as well but I live outside USA so.... :/
I jumped on this too. I've been following various websites for a better price and this is by far the best I've found (without having to do any pricematch/coupon shenanegans).
And the offer runs to Feb 23, apparently. Hope this establishes the new price point !
B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

Hi couple of questions before i decide to take the plunge
1)Have the devs found out how to use the 12GB space that BN owns
2)How easy is this to root?
thanks!
I ordered it two days ago, can't wait to get it in the mail now.
The B&N - not a good deal at $250?
Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

1) yes
2) very easy...check put the development forum and you'll see the one click root. In a few days CM7 will be released in greater fashion than previously. In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).
Trust your gut. In the long run, I think if you choose the nook tablet, you'll be extremely happy.

though as ever as soon as I buy something they announce the next version
I wonder if this deal involves the new model of NT with only 8G of internal memory (instead of 16G)? This model can also be purchased from the BN website:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-tablet-barnes-noble/1104687969?ean=9781400501779
take note of the 512mb ram as well so not only is the 8 gig model less storage space...but also down to 512mb system ram. I was hoping they'd keep the 1 gig ram but just lower the 'hdd' shame not :/

[Q] Anyone regret buying the Nook Tablet?

I have been using the NT for about a month and a half, and honestly I think I should have gotten something better.
It does have its problems such as the wifi connection drops a lot and I have to restart the tablet. This is not the fault of the devs, but of B&N. I don't understand why we should have to hack and find workarounds just to get the full use of the NT.
Does anyone else feel that they should have gotten a different tablet? Perhaps an actual tablet?
I am considering selling the NT. I don't think I would have had the amount of issues with an actual tablet and one that is not so locked down.
Although I'm really satisfied with the capabilities of even just a regular root, the only time I've regretted buying an NT was when I heard Asus was coming out with a new 7 inch tablet later this year. That makes me want to sell this thing instantly, haha.
To be honest with you i bought my NT as a stop gap between selling my iPad2 and waiting for the iPad3.. with the intent to sell this once i picked up the new iPad..
and for the first week or two i did regret buying it but then.. Considering what i use it for
1.Watch movies (netflix, hulu, and divx on the SD card),
2 Browse the internet and 3. Actually read a book or two.. it's actually perfect for all that.
Used the SD card method to root (Thanks Albert) and then side loaded all the apps that i needed. Never had Wifi or reboot issues, the screen is actually brighter and clearer than the iPad 2 i had and the battery life is above average for a 7 inch
I will be holding on to this for a while.. and i think once they perfect the other rom's and get the bluetooth working it's actually a keeper.. especially if ICS gets ported.
But as always you have to ask yourself does it do what i need?.. the only reason to get a different tablet would be if you needed GPS, Camera's, bigger screen, 3G, a different app store, video out etc....
if none of that is the reason.. then whatever tablet you buy will fill you with the same... should i have really bought this feeling..
I am comparing the NT with the $199 refurbished 16Gb HTC Flyer. I find that I miss CM7 on the Flyer... and the Flyer somehow seems harder to hold. I guess I got used to both CM7 and the bezel on the Nook Color and now the Nook Tablet. I haven't decided which I will keep yet, but I am leaning towards keeping the NT.
Heck no ... I've had 250.00 dollars worth of hacking fun with mine I have a feeling there is a lot more coming. Just wish I knew how to code to help out
Basically it boils down to what you want to do with it. Technically, you bought an e-reader. If you wanted more, you should have bought more. Myself personally, I came to XDA before I made up my mind between various tablets. I settled on the NT because I could see there was a bright future for it. The hardware bugs will be worked out eventually. Blame B&N for the hold-ups thus far. Give it a while. If you sell now, in 6 months, you will regret buying something else and will be looking to get another NT.
Understandably, there are limitations to this device. It's half the price of an iPad. You don't get any of the fancy things like GPS, 3G/LTE, camera, etc. But it is a great tablet for the money.
I bought this because my cheap e-reader broke. It was mainly to read with. That said, since I bought it 2 months ago, I haven't read more than a page of a book!
I've had tons of fun putting Android on, customizing it, and getting it how I like it. I'll be 10 times happier when a fully functional port of ICS is released for it. Netflix and videos look amazing on its screen, indisputably better than the supposedly identical screen on the Kindle Fire (just read ANY review).
I've never had an issue with the WIFI dropping or restarting. There are a few issues that the great devs and contributors here have helped me to conquer.
There are still a couple things I'd like to see get done to this device though, other than the glorious port of ICS. I'd love to be able to use ALL of the 16 GB of data on board. That was one top reason I chose it over the Fire, but I'm confident the great people here will solve that in time. Another is that, despite there not being onboard GPS, I'd still like location-based tools to work, like they do on any other WIFI device like my phone.
Other than that, I'm really happy with what I bought. I may not use it for what I initially intended, but hey, who has time to read when you're busy installing your favourite apps, customizing widgets, and making your home page perfect?
And on the issue of buyer's regret, when it comes to tablets and smartphones, there will ALWAYS be something better within 3-6 months!
You can use your 16Gb, just repartition it, it is very easy.
My only regret so far is that I got the 8gb NT. It is actually my father-in-law's device, but I told him I would configure it to have better access to the Android market. I had read several posts about rooting and installing Go launcher (or equivalent) and was excited to do this. For the time being at least, it doesn't look like this is an option, and the 512k RAM looks to be an issue. I may try to convince him to return it and get the 16GB version. Since it's not mine, I guess I need to let him see if he is happy with it, but I'm chomping at the bit to put some of the great work from this forum to good use on his system!
Maybe I will have to just get my own. I have been talking about getting some kind of tablet with my wife, and will likely get something in the next couple months. Since I am used to a smartphone, it's hard not being able to install any app that I am familiar with, and I will likely go for something with more features.
As others have said, it's all about what you actually need/expect. And there will always be times when you second-guess what you do purchase... Buyer's remorse is just part of being human, IMO!

Well, I was able to get my Nook Tablet much more easily than a Kindle Fire because my University has a deal with Barnes & Noble; my school bookstore is basically a small B&N store full of textbooks. If I had the choice, I would have chosen the Kindle Fire, but I still like my Nook Tablet, especially now that CM7 is running on it.
I don't regret it, but let me say - I never liked my device hacks to be easy! Sounds masochistic, yes, but I've always enjoyed installing custom firmware on stuff that, until some hackers got a hold of it, was never able to run anything other than what the manufacturers intended. I'm talking about Wii, PSP, PDAs, etc.
If you think development for the Nook Tab is rough, think about how slow and brutal it was getting the PSP to run custom software. I suffered at least one electrocution modding the thing's battery because I didn't have much experience with moving pins on a chipset. It was worth it to get homebrew stuff running on there though.
My point is, while the Kindle Fire owners do have it a lot easier than us, I enjoy witnessing the development process first-hand; it's oddly satisfying. I understand some people around these forums are only here because they wanted a cheap CyanogenMod 7 Tablet and want to see the Nook Tablet become that - but I'll be lurking around here long after the Nook Tablet devs reach their goals because I'm fascinated by hacking and modifying devices.

I just realized that after my post. Haven't checked the posts here lately. It seems a little complicated for a noob like me. Plus, don't I have to install CM7 also to do it?
No you don't need to run CM7 to repartition, I am noob as well, it is very easy, it just looks hard.
Just follow this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22157605&postcount=25
Partition 10 is where you would put you own data
Partition 11 is where all apps go, when you install them.
on mine i did half half because a lot of games are pretty big and need space, but you can change it to you own need.
just do the commands in bold black, the rest that you see is what your nook outputs.
Update after using the HTC Flyer for a bit more. I think I will sell my 2 Nook Tablets and keep the HTC Flyers. At $199 they just offer so much more.... GPS, front and back cameras, working bluetooth, working skype, dual speakers that are loud, HDMI out via MHL (adapter on the way). The built-in 16gb is partitioned so there is 8+ GB for media stuff. And for my almost 7 year old, he loves that Talking Tomcat and Talking Ben work, and Galaxy on Fire 2 runs fast on the Flyer as well since there is a native adreno version. It is only single core but runs at 1.5ghz and has 1gb ram so it feels as fast at the NT if not faster in some cases. The Adreno 205 gpu is not rated quite as good as the Powervr SGX540 but seems to be well supported for gaming. Not to say that there are not some annoyances with the Flyer. I can't seem to turn off the lock screen. There is no CM7 though there are custom roms for both Gingerbread and Honeycomb for the Flyer (need to root and unlock the device first). And I need to find better cases for them. Anyway I think the refurbished HTC Flyer is a keeper at $199 from buy.com And of course I can read on them with Moon+ Reader Pro, Kindle App, Nook App, etc.

So far no regrets. Just installed cm7 and happy.
Plus I only paid $175 for my 16gb tablet on Craigslist.
Hopefully cm9 makes it's way to the tablet.
My only regrets are the possibility of what the Asus tablet might offer and that the NT can be had for $175 now. Those aren't really fair reasons though since there will always be price drops and always be new options if you wait. I wanted it for Christmas and it's been everything I expected. I'm rooted at 1.4.0, zero WiFi issues and it's never rebooted (I did have a frozen screen once). I plan on staying on this platform until the fine developers on this forum give me the option of ICS for my NT!
I have no regrets at all. It let me do everything I really cared about right out of the box for a price I didn't mind paying. Any additional functionality after ebooks, videos, music and some light web browsing is just so much gravy as far as I'm concerned.
I love it, but primarily because I bought into the B&N ecosystem years ago (I have about 400 books and magazine subscriptions). It's much more pleasant to read on the NT than it is on my iPad, due to weight and size. Movies are great, except for the below-average speaker. I don't surf the Internet on my NT; if I have to do it mobile, I prefer to leave that to my phone since I can do it one-handed. My only qualms:
1. There needs to be an Economist magazine app, built for the Nook. You can't install the one from Android Market, even after rooting.
2. The speaker, as mentioned above.
3. The little hook in the bottom corner is kinda annoying. Yes, I know it makes the design unique, but it gets in the way. It also makes accessing the MicroSD card a pain.
4. At $250, GPS would've been nice. Not that I expect to carry it around for turn-by-turn, but I'd like to access the map and Yelp for places to eat while in my hotel room.
I don't regret getting the NT16 at all. But then again my uses for the device are:
1. Reading. I read a LOT.
2. Playing games
3. Surfing the internet
4. Study device (read pdfs/powerpoints/word docs for school)
I also have music and movies stored on the device for the day when I need to entertain myself outside reading/games and off a wifi network. It's small and light enough to carry at all times in my purse or backpack and zippy enough to do what I need it to do.
Once CM9 is released I'll have to debate a lot on whether or not I want to keep my simple root with the BN eReader or upgrade to ICS for full tablet capabilities (like all those excellent note taking apps compatible with Honeycomb/ICS)
No regrets at all.
Initially when it appeared that B&N was going to hound us endlessly trying to disable root and return everyone's NT to 'jail', I was a bit resentful. I still don't recommend the NT to others because I don't trust them.
But I should have known the dimbulbs in B&N management are no match for the talented devs here. I've got no worries that my device can be ruined with an underhanded update- and I haven't done much of anything to secure it since I first rooted it back in December or so. (Still running rooted 1.4.0 with no problems). The fact that it can now run CM7 (which I haven't tried yet) is just icing on the cake. I'm guessing I'll love it even more once I get around to trying that.
The tablet does everything I need it to and more, and was a good deal for the price.
Next tablet I own probably won't be a locked device, but as for the NT itself, no regrets. That's 100% thanks to the devs here.
