Read through a bunch of threads on S-OFF and still somewhat confused.
I'm running stock GB right now - 2.01.665. I'm rooted and unlocked, but S-ON.
If I S-OFF now and install whatever patched hboot unlimited.io recommends with their install guide, can I receive the OTA by going to Settings->Check Update or whatever the usual menu is and:
-retain S-OFF?
-retain unlocked bootloader?
-retain root?
When I do S-OFF I'll be taking my 16gb sd card out and temporarily replacing it with a 2gb sd card. I'll put the 16gb back in when S-OFF completes.
Thanks in advance! I want to do the check update method so I don't lose any data.
-retain S-OFF? === yes bc you are s-off they cant change that.
-retain unlocked bootloader? yes bc you are s-off you dont have to unlock the bootloader
-retain root? === yes flash su if not

Thanks.
Ok, so there's basically no point at all in unlocking bootloader once you have S-OFF? Can I simply relock the bootloader with S-OFF and still be able to do whatever I want in terms of flashing?
Do I need to flash stock recovery before installing OTA, and if so, where can I get it? I searched but only found old RUU's.
The S-OFF process relocks the bootloader already. There's no reason to unlock it again after that.
I don't think you'll have any issues. I RUU'd back to 2.01.605.11 so I had stock 2.11 hboot and it OTA updated without any problems. I doubt JB hboot will affect it either.
Thanks for the help guys. Can anyone comment about the recovery issue? Do I need to have stock recovery/where can I find it? I'm on Amon Ra right now.
We could s-off after the ota right?

I notice going to Revolutionary the Hboot I have its not selected I have 1.50 I think I have updated software like a dummy through sprint OTA I seen their was and RUU file to downgrade back to 1.40 is it safe to do so.
Go here: LINK
Downgrade your HBoot and get back to 1.40.
Why don't you just root without downgrading?

After a while of having to use the flash image gui app, it gets pretty annoying not being able to use Nandroid backups. That is why i am trying to downgrade myself.
Makes sense. Then check out the link vdubtx posted.
I would like to have S-Off instead of s-On

You can root, but you also forfeit your warranty to HTC by doing HTC Unlock, that code that you use to unlock it, gives them your device info, including serial number and when you bring it to sprint for repair, they can just look it up and see that you've rooted and voided your warranty.
Any files will work what is the latest 1
none of the RUU working do I have to format my SD card and I am trying to downgrade back to 1.40 which RUU file is i am clueless please help thanks I want S-off
I notice i have 2.17.651.5 already I seen that in the file which RUU file I need to downgrade to HBoot 1.40 please _2.08.651.2 i rem seeing that before my phone got that OTA by mistake.
Hello all.
I was wondering if one had s-off on the phone and would you be able to flash the ruu without loosing s-off again or having to relock?

nope, once you have s-off, flashing the ruu will not return you to s-on. that may change in a future ota, but as of right now it wont do anything
I'm currently s-offed and running 2.01.605.11 gb ruu.
Now I need to use the warranty so I need to change the status s-off/unlocked
to s-on/locked not s-on/re-locked.
How can I do that?
the fact that you are S-off doesnt matter as some devices shipped are s-off but to get to locked run the same gb ruu again but dont unlock.
but if you really care about it saying s-on follow the instructions in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612937
since you are on stock hboot you'll be fine with these instructions

by doing this, I can get the s-on, but still I can't get locked.
I need to know how to get locked on the bootloader to use the warranty.
Find a thread that has the correct hboot for your firmware then go to fastboot and type
Code:
fastboot clear cache
fastboot oem reboot ruu
fastboot flash zip (zipnamehere).zip
Then wait a little then do
Code:
fastboot reboot bootloader
That should do it and also I'm not sure it there's a space between reboot and ruu so try both

1. do the s-on process
2. re s-off (this will give you locked bootloader)
3. s-on again (to get rid of s-off)
4. ruu to latest offical release

Follow Scotty123 guide to s on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25165453
Then do the jouponut s off method. Flash files as ph98img after if you choose not to change to a eng hboot.
I had to find this out the hard way since was one of the release day 1 s off users an unlocked thinking a ruu would revert back to locked.

All of this going back to s-on is not necessary at all. Just flash the same hboot like I said before and you'll be fine

So if I'm unlocked only, no s-off, just find my hboot somewhere, rename it, flash it, reboot and I'm factory stock?

my first post is the only way to get to 100% stock that i am aware of ... if he is unlocked he will have to s-off to get it to say locked and then s-on to get it back.
if he locks it with the fastboot command it will say lock and if he is s-on not sure but i know if you are s-off you will stay unlocked or relocked even if you flash new hboot's
Thanks if i helped
So i used the Viper Ruu to get back to stock and now my bootloader is locked, but I am still s-off. My question is how do I go about this to unlock my bootloader and flash twrp? Just want to be sure and not mess anything up.
Thanks

Use the VipeRUU to toggle S-OFF back to S-ON if you're looking to go S-ON again. Use VipeRUU to unlock bootloader and flash recovery.

Hi all,
I have installed a custom recovery on my ATT HTC One M8. It is rooted and I am trying to install an OTA update. I am fairly new to this and I need help. I can try provide any information necessary. I am currently on 4.28.502.1 and the OTA update is 4.28.502.2. I keep getting ERROR 155 and I don't know what I am doing wrong. Thank you
Not for the M8.....it might help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655832
I downloaded MyAndroidTools and actually shut down my HTC DM service. There are 2 of them. I went into HTCDM and unchecked DmService . I no longer see the update prompt.
I am waiting a few days to see how this pans out.... I really don't feel like unrooting and relocking.

I need to have S-OFF to relock my bootloader, but I can't find a program to help me achieve that. There was firewater and that has become discontinued. There is SunShine ( I think that is what its called ) which you have to pay $25 for. I don't know if it's worth it.
Error 155 is because of unlocked bootloader. Only way to have unlocked and run an ruu successful is with s-off. Just relock and ruu you can always unlock again via HTCdev. Type the command below to relock when s-on.
Fastboot oem lock
It will show relocked, so it won't help with warranty, but if you are planning to unlock again, it will work.

Are you sure I can relock my bootloader with S-ON? I've looked all around and it says I need to be S-OFF.
Give it a shot. If the ruu is the same version or higher, you can ruu easily with s-on

Ok, so new to HTC and all this s-off/on stuff....If I have my bootloader unlocked now and am stock rooted, all I need to do is buy Sunshine, s-off and I can install the OTA update without losing my apps and homescreen setting etc...?

/system has to be unmodified. This means most things that require root to change (E.G. removing system apps, changing build.prop, xposed, etc) have to be reverted to stock for an ota to work. You do not need s-off to take an ota. Just uproot, put /system back to stock and flash the stock recovery.

You need s-off to make it say LOCKED. With s-on, you can only make it RELOCKED.
The only reason to make it LOCKED is for warranty purposes through HTC (AT&T warranty actually doesn't care of the phone is modded).
