Android HDMI Dongle - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just cough wind of these little gadgets but seem that they are not being sold on any of the major sites.
Can anyone recommend one and maybe a place to purchase?
The more features the better
I do have my eye on this one.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/484889112/the-pocket-tv-makes-any-tv-a-smart-tv
But its not out yet.

Development Boards are (in my opinion) better than the dongles. Take a look to the PandaBoard (OMAP Dual Core 1.2Ghz + PowerVR SGX540, ~$180) or the ODroid-X (Exynos Quad Core 1.4Ghz + Mali400, ~$129). Origen Board is good also (Exynos Dual + Mali400).

Hahaha... yes. Unfortunately the boards are designed to developers, so there aren't accesories like the remote control to use it comfortabily
Yet, you can use a normal mouse/keyboard/gamepad connected by USB or Bluetooth
Oh! I forgot something: If you guys are looking for something compact and relatively powerful, take a look to the MK802: Dongle like style, AllWinner A10 1Ghz + Mali400 + 1GB DDR3, ICS, 2 usb ports, HDMI, WiFi... all for $76

I dunno. I recommend you to ask in any Youtube video (surely can do it, the chipset is perfectly capable, but is better to ask).

[Q] Eden on Archos 101?

Any possibility that we might see NotionInk's cool Eden UI on the Archos? I know the NotionInk Adam has Tegra, but I don't know if it's required for Eden...
Check out the NotionInk web site under the Software section if you don't know what I am talking about...
Moved to general as not android development
Probably not a good idea to try. Eden seems to be using nvidia's chip heavily. I wouldn't want to try that on our Archos'. Besisdes, let's see what honeycomb has for us as far as UI is concerned.
HoneyComb has many things to show us, a pre-release of the SDK is out and it's GREAT!

[COMPARISION] Vega vs. Touchpad

Hey guys.
Got a chance to buy an hp for £180. Would you say it was better than the vega? At the moment running vega comb I must admit I'm loving my vega! What are your thought please?
Much better mate....
The hardware of the tp is far superior to that of the Vega. Once Android is ported I'm sure we will have a honeycomb port in some fashion, and also ICS
Sent from my Samsung Galactic Superstar S II
I've got both and have handed the Vega to my wife now I am using the Touchpad pretty much full time.
i think vega's screen is pretty poor
Ok guys that's good.
What's the software like then? Is it as good as vegacomb?
Advent Vega
+1 Tegra SOC
+1 MicroSD Slot
+1 3G Sim
-1 512 ROM
-1 512 RAM
Hasn't the Vega got some limitation with wifi switching off when the screen is off?
Sent from my Samsung Galactic Superstar S II
Not with new vegacomb, still works.
Ok cool, will get the hp and sell the vega.
Prob silly q, assume you can get the android Market on it?

You can't get android anything on it just yet.
I have both a G-tablet & a Touchpad. While I expect the Touchpad to be my favorite device once a fully functional Android rom exists, the G-tablet is my 'Go-To' device today.
I would still suggest getting the HP, but don't sell your Vega just yet.

I had a Vega and it didn't have a 3G slot, but by far and away the biggest -1 is the screen, it was terrible.

I think sooner rather than later. There is a very crippled pre-alpha build available that shows that it at least runs/boot and has multi-touch support.
the CM7 team has made some more advancements and has mostly functioning WiFi. you can check @dalingrin twitter feed for updates.
Also vega has hdmi output.... No tv out on the hp touchpad..... but that screen is a good +10 on the touchpad compared to the vega....

cyanogenmod team made great progress with android being able to boot on touchpad as well as 10 pts multitouch and according to updates, made good progress on activating wifi on it but they also say there's still a lot to do... my advice too is to keep your vega if you really want android. I haven't received my touchpad yet.. but read webos is pretty neat and good but lacks apps

Anyone know anything about this tablet?

Hello, I bought a tablet off Ebay...I would link it but I noticed that I can't just of yet...I've googled and found out it has no name brand.
It's rooted, but I can't get the TWC app to work on it nor my daughters tablet which is an iview.

It's an Allwinner A10 cpu, I was able to get the Allwinner app on the market to work with my daughters, but I listed my tablet for sale and I'm sure it prob works with it as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am looking at getting the Ainol Novo 7 Elf, does anyone have any info on that if I'm lucky enough to get that?
Thanks in advance.
The ELF is a great Tablet for its price. I own one since a week. There are also some great ROMS out there. I flashed Feiyu Mod now i have full Market accses. And the touchscreen is also much more responsive.

The elf doesn't have full market access right out of box? I plan on getting mine off eBay once I get rid of this no namer I have. Glad to hear there are some roms for it.

Specs sound good
I don't know how much developer attention this is going to see. Less popular tablets don't get the mods & roms the touchpad, xoom, galaxy, transformer & all get.
It looks like a real sweet tablet for the price. My ballpark number is under 190 bucks and all the ones you listed below I've done searches on and I can't see paying pass 200 dollars for I would love the galaxy 2, that seems nice as well but it's over how much I'm willing to spend.
Maybe one day something will be out for it. I can buy an elf for 164.95 which isn't bad with the 1024x600 screen and 1gb of ram..
Is there other tablets out there I am missing under 190 dollars that I am not seeing which would be better than the Elf?

Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus + Arduino

Is there ANY way of communicating between my newly purchased arduino and my Galaxy Ace Plus?
It does not support USB Host Mode. Can this be changed some how?
I really need the 2 to communicate for a personal project. I've ordered lots of stuff on the basis that this would work. And now I've discovered it doesn't...
I'm not sure if bluetooth is stable enough - there needs to be a stable communication between each device. Ethernet is not possible because it needs to work outside of a network, out in the open.
Help!
Ideas?
USB host is a hardware supported thing.
Check if your phone's chipset supports USB host in Google.
If it can, someone might need to make a custom kernel to support it if Samsung hasn't enabled it by default.
I don't know why you say Bluetooth is not stable.
Arduino and your phone shouldn't have a problem on Bluetooth

I bought a very cheap BT module from china - £3.99!
Hopefully that should do the trick.. but it means the arduino needs a power supply, which requires either a **** load of AAs or a ****ty 9v battery.
The Ace Plus's chipset is "Qualcomm MSM7227A"
I've tried googling it with USB Host but I get nothing relevant to the problem.
Is Qualcomm MSM7227A with USB Host enabled possible? Could someone find out?
If it is, great! How do I enable it in a kernel?

Qualcomm says that usb host is possible.

It was supported by the Original Ace's chipset too! But Samsung disabled it for some reasons.
Who knows if Samsung did the same to you...

Some of the other chipsets in the USB column say: USB 2.0 High Speed OTG (480Mbps)
What's the diff?
Alright, how do I enable it on my GT S7500?
Please don't direct me into bricking my phone again. It was a total nightmare. Took over a month to be repaired...

Im not sure how to do it.
There are no methods to enable the usb host for the Ace Plus till now.
Maybe Samsung has done something to the motherboard to remove host compatibility like it did to the original Ace.
I would suggest you to stick with the cheap chinese bluetooth for now!
bah. I must bear the idea of using a power supply for my arduino instead of my trusty ace plus.
oh well, hope the bluetooth works!
I'd get a RasPi and a Gertboard. It's more suited to this kind of stuff.

WHAT! The Pi is only $25! Compare that to something similar and you'd end up paying $150. Technically you wouldn't even need the Gertboard, as you can get a breadboard and hook it up to the GPIO ports.

Thank you sir! I was beginning to wonder if there was anyone else who had been waiting for this functionality. Between this and working with other Androids via OTG the controller has become a pretty useful thing indeed.
Thanks for sharing. Btw so lame you need nvidia graphics card to get it work!

Some guy on reddit posted this: "You do not need an Nvidia GPU to use the controller. You only need it to upgrade the controller's firmware. I had my friend who has an Nvidia GPU and Windows, (I run Linux) plug in my controllers and update them. I think it takes about five minutes. If you can find someone who has Windows, an Nvidia GPU and GeForce Experience you'll be good to go. The controllers also don't seem to be "linked" to that specific PC; they work okay on my Linux boxes"
I'm not sure if I believe this guy, but it might be worth a try.
I had the firmware update via the tablet itself after going back to Stock, so there's that
Not sure if this helps, but I USED to have an nvidia card, and used the shield controller with it. I have an r9 380x now, and it still works 100%
Holy necro batman this thread gets like 1 post a year...
cliff notes for new visitors
back in 2014 nvidia released a firmware update that allowed limited functionality to non shield devices
some controls such as volume and the android nav buttons only work under android the headphone jack only works on shield and for anything not shield you need a otg or usb cord... as far as i have read lately this has not changed wireless and headphone jack are shield only and the nav and volume control is android only.
Thanks, FYI I use an XBOX360 controller via USB OTG and works well!
It should be noted it seems like the controllers are getting difficult to acquire now and have gone up in price lowest I found was 79.
