Hi,
Brought a new phone for my wife and now need to install custom ROM on it.
To do this, I have already rooted the device using PetesMotorolaRootTools. Now i need to know how to go about unlocking the bootloader.
All the info i have found is for AT&T Users. Therefore can someone please advise on how do i go about unlocking the bootloader?
Also which is the best ROM for Atrix? Are there any good ICS4 ROMS around?
Model = MB860
Andriod 2.3.4
System = 45.31.0.MB860.Retail.en.GB
Thanks
Irfan
Hi,
I have unlocked the boot loader using thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219753
And have installed recovery image using steps mentioned in thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
But the problem is that now when the phone boots, the only option that's working is emergency call. I cannot nothing else including the button responds.
Any ideas what's gone wrong?
Thanks

Follow the steps in my 2nd post. Once you have unlocked the BL & installed CWN, you can download any rom and flash it with CWM.
In regards to which ROM is better, To be frank, i did not have time to mess around with it. So you will have to give it a try yourself.
hi
I just bought a sprint photon 4g and i am in India. its unlocked
how do I upgrade it to ics 4?? and after upgrade will it stay unlocked???
thanks.
I take it you mean carrier unlocked. In which case youll need to unlock the bootloader and install cwm. Then youll be able to flash one of the ics roms. To do all this, search the photon android development forum for a thread started by qbking77. He makes videos showing you how to do all this. If you cant find the thread just find qbking77 on youtube and follow his videos.

Hi,
I rooted the phone and installed ClockWork thorugh Rom Manager.
Can you please tell me what do you mean by: Unlock the bootloader ?
Thanks.
The official ICS upgrade for Photon is not out yet. You need to install developer rom to get ICS (I am using unofficial CM9 by jokersax). Now, to install this rom, you need to unlock the bootloader (qbking77 has video for that). Without unlocking the bootloader, you won't be able to install these roms. Caution: Unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty and 4G won't work.

Hi,
Thanks for the information. I really apperciated it. I just have 1 more concern before i proceed. I don't worry about warranty and 4G as I bought the set in India. And India does'nt have 4G so no worries on that either! Only edge should work and wifi!
Ok, my main concern is, my phone is unlocked, will it get locked if I upgrade ?
Thanks.
Again, by unlocked, do you mean carrier unlocked? If yes, then it will remain unlocked. Don't worry, I am from India too and my phone is working fine with the Airtel sim card.
Hi,
I am not sure if its called carrier unlock. The phone is from US and I am using it in India with Indian operator. I just want to confirm that if I upgrade then I will still be able to use my Docomo simcard or it will ask me to put in Sprint simcard ?
Thanks.
You can unlock bootloader and flash any custom Rom and still use in India.
I am using mine in India with bootloader unlocked and custom Rom. Both CDMA and GSM is working fine.

Hi,
I followed qbking77's unlock video and when i ran the fastbook oem command it says: ... INFOOEM unlock is not implemented.
Also earlier my phone was carrier unlocked and working, but now when i turn it on, the issues:
1. It shows: Contacting Netwoking for 5-10 mins or so
2. Finally when it starts it shows that i am in International Roaming
3. It opens a wizard which says that the phone is not activated and I have to activate it.
4. Wifi is not working
5. Can't make / recieve calls anymore.
What to do ?
Seems my phone is now back to Sprint and not working as it was earlier.
How to fix ?
Thanks.
Installing cwm through rom manager was your mistake, rom manager version of cwm doesn't work well on the photon. The activation is irrelevant if you arnt using sprints network. Don't worry about it as once you're unlocked and have flashed a different rom the roaming and such will be handled differently. I suggest starting over and watching the corresponding videos in this order...
- Take the phone back to stock 2.3.4
- Rooting and installing bootstrap recovery
- Unlocking bootloader and installing cwm
Be careful not to miss even a single step. They are all important.

I just performed this on my Atrix 4G that was running 2.3.6 Stock exactly 7 days ago. It was the first time I had ever done anything to my phone since the last AT&T update. I had root before the update, but it was taken away when I applied the update. Since Motorola doesn't want to do a major update for my phone (Boo to them!), I decided to try flashing CM7 Olympus, and now I wish I had done it sooner!
I didn't check the links above, but I followed these instructions to the letter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
The process made me nervous, but it worked perfectly!
EDIT: Those are the closest instructions I could find to the original ones I had. I found the ones I actually used on Atrix Forums' website. The article is called "[TUT]Unlocking Bootloader and Installing Custom ROMs" (I'm too new to link to an external site due to forum regulations.)
Unlocked same version from ATT
I had to flash 4.1.83 sbf. The regular unlock process. But be careful as it could brick your phone. I experimented and luck was on my side.
Thanks,
Jinesh

Followed those instructions as well. I feel like I am very close to having my phone back to where it needs to be for me to consider the mission a success I am only experiencing an issue adding Google accounts and getting into the android Market. I did a titanium backup restore and got all of my apps back and restored system settings, but Gmail crashes every time I try to open it and the Market opens a white window then goes away without any warning or error info.
I haven't flashed a custom rom so I am still in the stock Gingerbread ROM.
Trying to add a Google account gives me the message "Can't Establish a reliable connection..." If I followed this guide, am I fine to do a hard reset, as that is the only solution I have found online to the Can't Establish connection error?
Original Post Deleted: Oops moment
If your intentions were to flash a custom rom, I would perform a nandroid backup and then flash away following the instructions you've been using.
If you unlocked the bootloader, your phone was probably returned to stock just like performing a hard reset. Google Play (or Market) usually needs a very good connection to run its first update, so if you're not on wifi, connect to that first. If you still have that problem, try clearing the data for that app (from the home screen > Menu > Manage Applications > "Market" > Clear Data)
If you were trying to flash a fruitcake (to return it to stock after flashing a custom ROM), still try clearing the app data and, if that doesn't work, try flashing the fruitcake again.
Hi All,
First of all I would like to thank everyone at XDA who has invested their lives to make our phones look and work better day by day...
I am very confused right now and have been searching the whole internet for three weeks now but didn't got any solution as yet.
I have got a Motorola Atrix 4G from Korea that has the following information:
Model : MB860
S/W Version : 4.5.2A- SKT-167
Android Version : 2.3.5
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9- 00004-gfbc 746e
My problem is that the stock rom currently installed is flooded with Korean language. I want to put a pure english stock rom into my Atrix that has all the stock options enabled. Which rom is suitable for this purpose and also as Korean SKT version doesn't have SBF files over the internet, therefore how can I restore to stock if things went into the wrong direction. BTW I have already rooted my phone.
While searching, found some files at "main.develoid.com:81/%40%20MOTOROLA/Atrix/" that I am not sure helpful for any thing or not.
Thanks in advance for all your help and support.
Ignore this and search for "how to know if my atrix is bell or ATT", then flash the proper sbf

Thanks for ur reply but I am already aware of this fact that my Atrix is not from any of these two i.e. ATT or Bell. My phone is from Korea and is from SK Telecom South Korea. It is a MB860 with SKT software version.
The SKT is the version of the rom. There are only 2 atrix models: ATT and Bell. It doesnt matter where are you from, my Atrix is Bell and we dont even have it in Brazil...

ATT Atrix 4G FCC ID: IHDP56LS1

I am not sure as if this has something to do but I considered it worth sharing...

Please remember that questions go in the Q&A section.
Contrary to what was posted earlier, there are three Atrix models (MB860, MB861, and ME860). But you seem to know which one you have already. Also, never flash an SBF unless you have no other choice.
Did you try going to Settings, Language & keyboard, Select locale and see if you can choose English? Might not work because I think that is the Korean GB235 software.
Is the device rooted with an unlocked bootloader? If so, you should be able to flash a AT&T stock fruit cake.

Thanks for your reply. My apologies for posting into the wrong section.
Right now my phone is rooted but not unlocked yet. I wanted to be safe before I can actually modify it. Least I could have a restore point to return. Thats why asking the experts for an advice.
My only issue is not the language but most of english characters are shown wrong whenever I receive a SMS. Can only have caller ID for SMS (contact numbers with +) or for the call (removing the + sign from all contact numbers). Can only send SMS with 80 characters otherwise it is converted into a MMS.
Instead of solving all these issues one by one, I believe installing a stock english rom would solve my problem. The only problem is that I am not sure which ROM can I use and what can I do if I end up into a soft brick phone.
Thanks again for taking the time to look into my problem.

Text information will probably never display properly with the Korean OS. Probably a combination of language and carrier differences.
Flashing an English ROM will solve your problems. Be sure to follow instructions for unlocking the bootloader for the Korean Atrix in the dev section. You can install any custom ROM. You can also install a stock ROM, but may have to make changes to locale and APN settings - no biggie.

Just to be clear, when I say stock ROM I mean a fruit cake. Some associate stock with sbf. As I said before, never flash an sbf (OK, only once when unlocking your bootloader). I recommend flashing this fruit cake to get you started. If you are not on AT&T, look here for changing your APN. But the very next step you take will be to unlock your bootloader. Worry about the rest later.
Thx for everything
I will unlock the bootloader tomorrow.
For the ROM, are u advising me to flash stock ATT fruitcake. Would ATT software be compatible with my phone's hardware?
Plz accept my apologies for bring unnecessarily demanding but I am very cautioned about flashing my Atrix mainly as it lacks support from Motorola.

Yes, AT&T fruit cakes will be compatible You can flash any fruit cake you want, you will just need to makes the changes I posted earlier.
The one thing I forgot to mention before: depending on your country and carrier, you may need to flash a different radio. Those are available at the Atrix Reboot Project.
Once your bootloader is unlocked you can flash or restore anything want. Your phone will be free!

Please advise if my backup is accurate. Also direct me to the place where can I drop these files to help other users with a similar phone.

Backup strategy is correct. The fruit cake won't work as is. Upload workdir or the zip to the Atrix Reboot Project and I'll fix it and put it back.
Edit: You can also post a dropbox link. Whatever works.

Can anyone please help me get me the SBF noted in the below post? Since all the links are dead I googled it and found it on US Cellular's site. I had some error upon flashing but, the phone boots! F***in cool! But, it reboots when I use the dialer and other apps and...I cannot get connected to Sprint so, I'm thinking this SBF was for the Electrify radio???? My Photon 4G is alive again though! You devs on here are freaking amazing!

root, recovery and flash a locked rom
Hi,
from what i got seeing ur post is that u r stuck in the other sibling's rom ( electrify).
thr s a simple solution though. just root the device and get the bootstrap recovery installed. then flash peetr's locked rom for the deivce. by far the best. do that and it will b back to working, locked bootloader though. enjoy !!!!!
