Lots of people claim their roms as "buttery" smooth. Even the JB is referred to as Project Butter.
I am just a bit confused here. How is "butterness" of a rom measured? What are the metrics used other than the user's perception?
To me, it's like a person driving a new car saying "Wow this is fast" but when compared to his old car, everything else is the same (horsepower, 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc).
So my question is:
What is the basis of a rom being "buttery" smooth other than pure perception?
Is this something that is measured (such as benchmark, etc).
Please note that performance != butter.
Just because you have a HIGH benchmark result does not necessarily mean it's buttery smooth.
Is the "buttery" smooth definition belongs in the same category as the "butt dyno?"
thanks

JB on my buddys nexus is the smoothest and most responsive experience I have had with a phone, and I say this as an iOS fanboy. I considered the iPhone 4/4S to be the smoothest experience I have had with a mobile device to date, closely followed by my iPad2.
JB on the note so far is disappointing compared to the nexus.
I think by buttery smooth they mean it runs very smooth....not it being actually buttery...and smoothness and speed are hand in hand...also if you disagree with the Devs make a better ROM than they can and run it yourself. Because we have some of the best DEVs around... All this thread is doing is somewhat insulting them and their hard work they do for FREE....it is pointless

Uhhhh. He didn't bash any ROM/dev. He asked how people define smoothness...? Only thing he was negative about was benchmarks, which is pretty justified.

Overall, I would define buttery smoothness as a higher and consistent frame rate for operations and animations within the UI. Whether it's the "zoom" animation you see when an app is opened, or the sliding between home pages in your launcher, or pulling down the notification drawer on top of an already graphically intensive process, in a buttery smooth experience, all of those operations and motions would feel and appear extremely fluid as though they are natural motions, rather than a skippy, stuttering arrangement of frames to create an animation. It's the difference between turning through the pages of a flip book slowly, and flipping through it quickly.
I'm actually kind of glad you started a thread like this because Project Butter in Jelly Bean is my most anticipated feature, however for some reason, while everyone else is cheering about how smooth it is, mine is very non-smooth, worse than ICS in CM9 (which I would consider an overall smooth experience). The ROM I've been using is h0tw1r3's CM10 ROM and not matter how I try installing it (wiping all data and system and Dalvik first, or trying to install over CM9), I am getting a sluggish and non-buttery smooth experience. I hope it's just a bug that can be fixed along the way and not my device but because so many people are having success with it, I can't help but to believe that it IS in fact my device. The developer does however mention that broken hardware acceleration in the ROM is a possible bug. I hope he's right!
If anyone has any insight and can help me, your assistance will certainly be worthy of a liberal donation!

When you say that JB on the Note is disappointing, is this because you have noticed the UI experience not to be smooth and very poor and laggy? Also, if you do find the experience to be poor, would you say that ICS on the Note seemed to perform better than JB does? I ask because I'm having this very same experience and am trying to make sure it's not just me.

Oh, I don't by any means desire to belittle the hard work of the developers. I can't believe that they released a Jelly Bean ROM this quickly with the stability that this one has. And I'm fully aware that this is alpha/beta. The reason I have a concern though is that everyone else that using the same alpha/beta software is claiming that it's the smoothest experience they've ever had and my experience is poorer than ICS. Do you see my issue?
You will know what buttery smooth is when you experience it.

Us Note users (SGH-i717) don't have the Darkside kernel nor the S2 port so I can't get the same results as you. I know the CM10 ROM we have available is only in alpha stage but it seems like everyone aside from me and a select few others are getting buttery smoothness with it. I'm not sure what the deal is since we all have the same device and have used the EXACT same process to flash the ROM. Frustrating...

My experience with JB on the note is the same as yours, its sluggish and choppy compared to ICS or CM9. One thing that I noticed is that I have the same experiences in CM9 and ICS if I use any of h0tw1re's kernels. I have to OC to 1.8ghz and even then I usually end up reloading a backup within an hour out of frustration.
I guess I'm one of the users on the other end of the spectrum. Cm10 is amazingly smooth! Most noticeably with recent apps and switching between apps, amongst other things. Seriously impressed so far. Night and day vs ICS.

Thank you so much for letting me know!! I have received much criticism for posting about this issue in the h0tw1r3 CM10 thread because people think that my definition of smoothness is off. I realize that most Note users are having a good experience but there are definitely a few who aren't and its not related to user error! I'm using CM9 still because its much more smooth and responsive but I have no issue with h0tw1r3's kernel in CM9 as it's rubbing very well. Does using the custom kernel in CM9 cause it to perform like it does in CM10? Seriously bro, thank you so much for letting me know that you're having an issue too. Its great not to be alone. Even if it only takes the two of us, we WILL get buttery smoothness on our Notes!!
And again I reiterate, anyone who experiences the current CM10 build to have more lag than CM9, please post here to let us know! I'll keep everyone posted on my experiences or any more solutions or information that I encounter.
I just want to say that I have used h0tkernel for a few weeks now. I have used Black*STAR IV & V and FJ's UCLF6 b4 and both Roms running smooth with it. I'm sorry you didn't have the same experience I have. OC'd and running like movie theater popcorn.... Buttery.

Thanks!! I have actually had excellent success with all of the ICS ROMs and CM9. They run like a dream even without the h0tkernel. My only problem begins when I'm on Jelly Bean (specifically being the current CM10 ROM we have). It would be much appreciated friend if you could report back here when you get a chance to try a Jelly Beam ROM and share your experiences. Project Butter is my most anticipated feature of Jelly bean. Its quite disheartening for it to be the one feature that doesn't work for me lol. Let's fix this issue together!

I prefer not to compare a fully stable release build against an alpha build ...
With alpha ...you are lucky to get a "favorable " running experience.
JB is bleeding edge for this device, and to date , the note wasn't even designed for it. That being said , I know that JB will improve greatly and function well , but comparison for "buttery" operation can not be fairly made at this point .
But since the question of buttery was asked ....I'll answer like this..
Buttery is the point where no obvious improvement can be made, an no obvious error can be found ...I.E. stable ...
Speed etc ....is finite ....as many changes are made to these roms by endless users under endless conditions. And there is no way to determine a best , other than the stable base on a base device without modification. And even then ...the device variables exist from the factory...g

Any recommendations on a smooth rom?

Remember OP, this is a thread asking for opinions and on a smooth ROM. I am going to have to disagree with Joe with how smooth MeanROM is. Your best bet is just to flash different ROMS and see which one you think is the best.
MeanROM has been the smoothest ROM I have used that is sense based with everything working
I have been using CleanROM for the past 6 or so months and it has been great. Always get great battery life and stability with Scott's ROM's.
You will have to play around with things stock builds work well with bloat removed . Oc kernels roms can be fast doesn't help battery life out tho. But its what you prefer and want outta things.

Lol everything is smooth just depends on what the OP has in mind that he wants outta a rom the looks, battery life,stock,stable...
I'm running MikRunny v1.11 right now and I think its pretty smooth.
The first rom I tried was Leedroid which is also very good, but its an optimized and tweaked stock rom.
And I was looking for something newer, an rom which contained atleast Sense 3.5 and had no serious issues.
And well you have many roms and you just can look in the threads that list these roms. Because I came from DHD I already knew what I wanted an stable rom with all phone features working and newer software like sense 3.5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458032
These threads are super subjective.
Any launcher that is not android native will typically be "laggy". This can be fixed by increasing scrolling speed and turning off fancy animations.
I can tell you from years of doing this any rom that is a stock rom will be the same, unless they use a different launcher and or mod the animation speed.
Just use them all, use what you think is best. I have an Epic Touch the hardware acceleration on it doesn't make that big of a difference.
You should sometimes ad somethings yourself. Like the oc deamon and controller and there are scripts that improve the performance.

Why scrolling on ICS roms (sammy and aosp) are worse than on Gingerbread? It really sucks. I just don't get it since ICS is supposed to have hardware acceleration and all. It stutters a lot and is not as smooth as gb. I've been using paranoid rom for some time now and I've tried almost everything available on xda and while ICS has clear advantages over gb, scrolling is not one of them. I just went back to cm7 just to make sure (it'd been a long time since I'd used it and I didn't remember very well) and scrolling is waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better. Isn't it possible to make ics scrolling better? Am I missing some config or tweak that fixes this?
ICS has only recently been shipped out, give Samsung some time and they'll iron out these things

I can only agree. The scrolling in ICS on Galaxy S2 is poor. It is stuttering and this makes it unpredictable and very unpleasant to look at. The latest (XWLPG) firmware doesn't help at all. In my view, ICS is a beta product due to this single flaw. It may be functional, but not as good as GB good.
I am therefore running GB again.

As they said - "TO EACH IS OWN". it really is a preference for the user if they want ICS or GB. Feature wise, ICS offers a lot more than GB. Stability wise, yes its GB. Just my two cents
Agreed. The scrolling sucks. Stutter, stu stu stutter...
I never knew how bad scrolling could be until these stock-based Samsung ICS ROMs came out. As you lift your finger off the screen, the tracking is way too sensitive and sometimes this causes the scrolling to go flinging off into the opposite direction, or too far in the same direction you were traveling before you lifted your finger. This isn't necessarily an ICS problem, because CM9 and AOKP based ROMs on the SGS2 don't suffer from this issue, so it's obviously something Samsung is doing. Changing kernels and playing around with different touch sensitivity / vitalij settings doesn't really help. I'll be curious to see if the stock-based ROMs on the SGS3 do the same thing.
I'm having the exact same problem. Tried everything from pure stripped down ICS ROMS to heavily customized ones and the scrolling sucks as compared to GB. It's a shame the UI experience is worse on ICS when it is the biggest factor in user experience. The SGS2 has very powerful hardware (even by today's standards) and shouldn't stutter while simply scrolling between homescreens or app menus. It really just ruins the experience for me.
Any new on the next android update? I hope they're not stopping at 4.0.4 cus there's a lot more to be done.

I'm using XX series of ROMs and with exception of the first one (LPQ) scrolling is perfect, especially on XXLPW. I read somewhere on this forum that Samsung implemented different scrolling engine on ICS ROMs so actually we shouldn't much compare these two stock ROMs families. ICS was supposed to behave a little different from the beginning. Anyway, I've noticed the differences in scrolling mechanism on ICS but cannot say single bad word about its fluency nor speed.

I have only used official samsung roms and ICS stutters a lot. Use GB and ICS next to each other and you can't help thinking ICS is a step back when it comes to scrolling.
I have been trying out several different ICS ROMs on my phone for the last few months. Never had a GB custom ROM. I was on stock UCKK6 which came with my phone and then went on to the ICS roms.
I have tried almost all of the SGH-i777 custom ROMS - and MIUI as well.
Out of curiosity I decided to go back to Gingerbread so flashed UnOriginal ROM.
First thing I noticed - Damn this is smooth. Everything - browser, launcher, touch response - everything is smooth like a baby's butt.
So whats going on with ICS? why dont we have the same smooth experience on any of the ICS roms. Is it because the official source code has not been released yet? or is it resource heavy compared to GB?
Do not want to start a ROM comparison but just curious. Having moved back to GB I am not sure I am missing anything critical from ICS. Others might not share this opinion but this is what it is for me and the things I use my phone for.
I am still bitten by the flash bug - so will continue to try out the ICS ROMs.
What do all of you think about moving back to GB and the pros/cons? What ICS feature will you miss the most? Please share your thoughts!
<puts flame suit on>
I'm about ready to go that route myself... Becoming frustrated when I find a "perfect" ROM, only to have the wlan_rx wakelock come back and drain my battery into nothingness. My favorite GB is Shishir's - Fairly stock, but with some nice tweakability, and have never run into the same battery probs.

It is a personal choice.
In here, in this world, whole universe, no one forces you to do what you don't want to.
Once in a while, I still heard some people saying "Windows 3.1 is so much better than Windows 7".
It is purely your choice so no need to put the flame on.
It's good that seeing you in fact trying out a few different ROMs and finally made the decision on your own.
That's a good sign for all of us.
I've had the same experience as well. I'm not so sure if it's issues with the roms but more with the Kernels. There is a lot involved to tune the kernels just right. I'm no developer but I believe ICS may just be a little more complex this GB.... or at lease ICS is not so forgiving.... I'm not developer so who knows.
On a side note, I just tried the PARANOIDANDROID v1.1 port so far this has been on the same level as smoothness as any GB rom I've ran. Link below:

Agreed. I've been running AOKP/Fluxi combo since I decided to jump into the world of ICS ROMs, and it's the best one I've used so far. I will definitely agree about the smoothness of UnNamed, though. I've got a backup saved just in case

I have tried AOKP with Siyah and Neak but not with Fluxi. I will give it a shot.
Of all the ICS ROMs I have tried - I thought Shishir ICS and Serendipity 9 were the smoothest - however that might be partly due to the SGS3 launcher.

I need to give this ROM a shot as well. Looks pretty interesting.
GB > ICS.

Binnacle is also damn smooth. That was my personal favorite GB rom.
Every time I flash an ICS rom, I immediately go running back to GB. Maybe it's just me being impatient and not letting things "settle in", but most ICS roms I've tried aren't as quick and smooth, and that just gives me an anxiety attack

I had not even heard of this one. But saw LilChris's index post and found it. I will definitely try this one. A ROM that PirateGhost and Red5 worked on - has to be great
It shows Beta7 as the latest version. Is this stable enough to be a daily driver?
Binnacle is hands down the best gb rom for this phone. It is wicked fast and epic battery life. Its more than enough for a dd

The only thing that doesn't work on Binnacle is the strippers. Pirate took them out of the last beta build, said they were too "lulzactive" for him.

MikeyMikes Serendipity 9 is the smoothest thing I've run. Especially with the stock Sammy launcher available during Aroma install.

+1. The new Touchwiz UX is really smooth. Trebuchet does not feel as smooth on the same ROM

I did try Binnacle Beta 7 yesterday. I did not realize it had android 2.3.6. I somehow like the bounce effect in 2.3.4 that the UnOriginal ROM offers. Hate the glow effect in 2.3.6. Also, personally I felt UnOriginal was smoother than Binnacle (no offense) - just my opinion.
I did not leave it on long enough to comment about battery life. I flashed a different ROM. Seems like I am turning into a Flashaholic (need to restrain)
My progression:
Unnamed, then MIUI then CM7 then CM9. Doubt I'll ever leave CM9.

Hi. first of all I just want to say that I'm a big admirer of XDA forums I've been following the forums for quite some time on various phones but I'm not very active in posts / replies due to my inexperience.
I'm sick of AT&T taking forever to give us ICS and I'm not willing to wait just to get a whole bunch of bloatware and the same old touchwiz. I've come across two good roms: Onlyone and Objection. I'm kind of leaning towards Objection because It's giving me two UI options: Android 4 and the new Touchwiz, but from the replies I got the impression that Onlyone is more stable. Are there any ROMS that use the official ICS code released by Samsung or not yet?
Here are my main concerns: battery life, ROM stability and speed, and of course the good additions like updated touchwiz, S-voice, etc.
Try them all and see which you like best. Nobody can tell you which is best, because that is purely opinion based. There aren't that many, so just learn how to use titanium backup so switching between roms doesn't take too long.

I am a power-user who hates lag. The collective Mesosphere is for you... then install NovA Launcher and zoom zoom... your on your way. Don't bother with other ****ty roms, i've tried them.
Thanks for the replies. I'll definately utilize titanium backup and I'll look into The collective Mesosphere with nova and zoom zoom =)
Mesosphere is rocking it! GB has to get gone, you'll be glad it did. I haven't tried other rooms yet, admittedly. So far I don't have a need to.

I don't believe their are any ****ty ROMs. These devs create awesome roms. I haven't tried them all yet but I haven't found one I didn't like. The hybrid is what I'm rocking now.

Are you running the rom standard or have you enabled tablet mode? I just flashed it, need to put it through its paces.

Are you running tablet or phone mode?
If you prefer the unmodified, pure Android experience that you would get on a Nexus device, you can come close with a CyanogenMod based ROM. These are my personal favorites as they are practically bloat-free and don't have any carrier/manufacturer customizations. The downside on the Note is that there is no S-Note/S-Memo. Hopefully the CM devs will get these apps to work eventually, but the S-Pen does work.
If you like the TouchWiz interface then try one of the TW/ICS leak based ROMs such as OnlyOne. That was the first ICS ROM I tried and I liked it, but overall I prefer CM9.
you can try those ROMs from this guy - flappjaxxx. They are the unofficial CM9 ROM and UCLE2 stock-base ROM. They are really solid, stable, daily drivers and supported well by the awesome developer. These roms get very good comments from XDA-users.
I've tried every single rom.
for CM9- I'd use Mesosphere the rest were pretty unstable.
For Ucle2 + S-pen functionality i'd use FJ's Build. Onlyone was laggy for me.

I run tablet mode most of the time. I don't have everything set up the way I want it just yet.

This is like asking what beer should I drink or who is the best Golden Girl. Everyone is going to have different answers and you really need to try some and find your favorite.
That being said I am a big fan of flappjaxxx's UCLE2 rom.
My recommendation is to go with the Unofficial build of CM9 by h0tw1r3.
Nothing beats the cleanliness of AOSP, and the added features that Cyanogen throws in are well worth it.
I have been running it since he released the first build and it is extremely stable. And thanks to CalcProgrammer1, it was just updated and we may even see nightly builds.
Thanks Calc!

Ive been a day one Note user and loved the work of all the devs here. I absolutely hate that the stock jb (specifically the debloated stock) is so Damn sluggish. I love the aokp/cm/aosp roms for speed but the random reboots and in some cases lack of stability are problematic. As are the battery life issues.
I've tried the other stock based roms and not sure if it's my device or what but they all get significantly more sluggish with time/usage. If anyone has a stable aosp/aokp /pure Android ROM to suggest I'd be happy to give it a spin. I still love the device just wish it was more smooth.
In any event I greatly appreciate the work of the devs that are still around. Please keep up the good work.

Well black jelly and fuze kernel may help or what I run is rootbox4/20 build and 4aces kernel build 4/21...I had sluggish issues as well with 4.1.2 .....but I have been more drawn to certain 4.2.2 builds as well as ICS builds due to then fact that 4.1.2 just doesn't like to work properly with my i717....

So you understand what I'm saying. I'll check out and pay more attention to the 4.2.2 roms and give those another spin. I'll try that combo you mentioned. Thanks much for the suggestion.

Also try the CyanogenMod April M3 or "snapshot" from the get.cm download site. This is one of the last 4.2.2 builds that were stable before the random reboots plague came.
Thanks very much for the suggestions I'll give those a try.

+1. For what you seem to want. Definitely try that CM9 rom. Its a good mix of jellybean + ICS like its title says.
However the other ROMS mentioned are definitely the most stable builds of non-touchwiz jellybean that you could get

So far the 8/28 Unofficial AOKP from BlownFuze has been very good. Looks like it may work out. I tried an earlier version of this and got the SOD and hand't been back in a while. If I have any issues in the future, i'll try the other recommendations.
Thanks!
Man I have went from the note 2 to this which is a long story but damn. Jb is almost non bearable to use. Laggy and even using cm10.1 stable and rc3 it would not even play angry birds friends correctly.
So went to stock 4.04 and removed all that att stuff since I am in Germany on o2 and I have to say its been pretty good to me.
I run nova launcher and so far battery has been good, angry birds friends play great and not an issue.
I really think Samsung just gave us jb to shut us up about it and forgot to check to see how it ran.
My next phone will be the nexus 5 or whatever it will be called.
Tired of this flashing 50 Roms to get my device to run the way it was meant to be
