The not wiping anything part is probably your problem. You should always at least wipe cache and dalvik. Data and system can stay intact. Make sure you downloaded the right version aswell. (Cdma/gsm) wipe those and try again. If that doesn't work, perhaps try those fixes youre refering to and if that doesn't work, full wipe.

Which rom are you referring to? cm10 is his latest i believe? Is your photon unlocked & rooted? What Recovery did you flash? (joker has A CWM specially made for his roms) Unless you are upgrading a rom to a newer version of it, or you are using aroma installer, it is always important to wipe your phone prior to flashing. Im a wee bit OCD about it, so i
1) Wipe data/factory reset
2) Wipe Cache Partition
3) Format System
4) Format Data
5) Format Cache
6) Wipe Dalvic Cache
Then begin flashing. For safe measures always flash your rom twice to ensure it has been properly flashed
*edit*
Did you flash from a stock rom? If so, which gingerbread version was it running? and did you ensure to update it before you flashed?

[Q] Switching between ROMS?

Hey guys, quick question. I am currently running CM7 on my V but it is to unstable for me, too many FC's and reboots. I would like to flash That Ain't Sense ROM, found here:
http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/312747-rom-theme-wait-aint-sense-4-6-2011-a.html
Under the directions, it says:
how to flash:
put gapps and rom on sdcard
wipe the hell out of your phone
flash both and reboot
enjoy

When it says, wipe the hell out of the phone, what specifically do I have to wipe, and at what time during the process? Since I am moving to an entirely new ROM, what do I need to wipe?
P.S. I am running thunderc recovery.
Data, cache, system, dalvik cache and something else i can't remember. If am i not wrong, ROMManager doesn't work on the V, so you can't switch back and forth freely, unless there is another method.

Okay do I wipe all of that before flashing or after or what? Its been a while since my last flash.

You wanna wipe before flashing a new ROM. I wipe data/cache, then Dalvik cache then flash ROM, then gapps file

Is that all I have to wipe? I made a nandroid backup but I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

This should be in Q&A
That's all I wipe. Wiping everything won't hurt though. Just don't do a factory reset through the settings with the phone booted up. Do it through the recovery.

Updating to new firmware/kernel

Hey all so after I update my firmware to XWKK5 do I have to wipe everything while in recovery mode is it really necessary?
What do you want to achieve with deleting all from recovery?
If you've upgraded, then the phone is in the version upgraded. If you delete all from recovery, you have to reinstall the entire ROM or the phone wont boot...

Instructions are to be followed .
Custom roms usually ask for wipe but not stock roms .

You don't need to do that if you are upgrading from a Stock ROM. If you chose the wipe version of ROM for flashing then it'll automatically wipe you device. If you use non-wipe it'll upgrade and everything remains same.
Wipe is only recommended when you are switchin from Custom to Stock or vice-versa else after a version downgrade say KK5 to KJ3.
Hope it helped.

[Q] Twrp recovery -- do I also wipe system before flashing new rom?

Hello. I have backed up my stock rom and would like to flash a new custom rom. Team Win Recovery is all new to me as I used clockwork recovery and Amon RA on my old evo 4g. Before I flash a new rom, I know I'm supposed to wipe cache and dalvik, but do I also wipe system? Thank you for your help in advance.
If you're flashing a different ROM all together, then I usually do Factory Reset, Cache, Dalvik Cache. (in that order)
I don't know that the order matters, it's just my way of doing it, and I've never had any problems.

Thanks for your quick response. Gladly appreciate it! But there's also an option in the wipe menu to wipe "system". In the wipe menu, there's: cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, battery stats, rotation, system. I wiped cache, dalvik and battery, anything else I neeed to wipe before I install a custom rom? In clockwork recovery, all I used to do is wipe data, cache and dalvik.

Yes, when flashing a fresh ROM wipe EVERYTHING, including system. I usually wipe a few times just to make sure I'm starting fresh. I haven't used this super wipe but you can also check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700211
Edit: I don't usually worry with wiping battery stats or rotation

Thank you. I wiped everything and performed a factory reset.
You don't need to wipe system. Any decent rom out there will wipe the system for you before the rom flashes.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the factory reset wipes system anyway.
No factory reset does not wipe system. Also do not use super wipe zips. They are bad for you

Factory reset wipes the data partition. It does the same thing as the factory reset within the phone settings. If you wipe system, it completely wipes out the OS, and there will be nothing to boot. Of course you can still get back to recovery. When you flash a rom, by default it should wipe the system for you and replace the system with the rom you are flashing. There may be a case where you are flashing an incremental upgrade, which will not wipe the system.
The reason you do a factory reset (data wipe) when flashing between roms is because settings and other stuff that was saved on the data partition may not be compatible with the rom and cause issues.

Based on what?
Based on what developers have said. Super wipe originated from a CWM issue back on the EVO 4G and people never seemed to of forgotten.

The issue was with cwm not superwipe. The superwipe created for this device works fine.
the issue was with cwm, the superwipe was made to combat that issue. a good dev will set his rom to wipe system. all a user has to do is factory reset in recovery. Superwipe is a unnecessary step and could be bad for the phone if its corrupted or the person who made it did it wrong.
really great info, thanks guys!

Yes. A system wipe doesn't affect recovery. It just wipes the system partition on your phone. The recovery partition remains unaffected.

[Q] TWRP and flashing roms

Just curious about whether I am wiping and flashing correctly.
I currently have TWRP 2.2.2.0 installed.
I am presently on the Viper sense based rom for the HOX+. I assume I must be wiping and flashing correctly as the rom works!!
Wipe cache, wipe davlik cache, factory reset and system? Then flash rom?
Doing this, does it completely remove the previous rom, audio drivers etc so that I have a clean slate so to speak for flashing the new rom?
That's what I'm after, wiping the previous rom completely, drivers, everything so that I can flash an aosp based rom.
Thanks.
First off, I would advice you to flash the latest version of TWRP before doing anything. Now, having said that, yeah, essentially press all buttons in the wipe Menu (I frankly don't know if the "Format" button would be overkill). However, be aware that in doing so, you're going to wipe all the data in the partition, including any zip files you may want to flash afterwards. If you end up doing this, you're going to need to sideload the rom into your phone in order for you to be able to install it.
You only lose stuff in data by wiping data partition
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
If he is wanting to use the Viper rom it is best to flash the version that is on the Viper thread. This has some minor changes in it to allow the install of OTA's and zip files from the hub.
If he uses the latest version it may cause issues trying to install OTA's.

Exactly, so long as he doesn't touch the data partition he should loose nothing. I did recommend the whole "Nuke it" approach because of the whole "Clean Slate" thing the OP wanted though...
Nuke it? Wipe everything, including data partition then sideload a rom?
Thanks.

Yeah, although it's not necessary most of the times, at least that's what I personally do when I want a 100% clean install (Short of re-locking the bootloader and running a RUU of course).

While installing Viper you can choose to wipe the phone for a clean installation. So basically it's not necessary to do anything than install recovery for Viper and then install Viper ROM and choose the correct option in AROMA installer...

hi .am using xperia u,and have installed kernel phantom.while installing firebean i had a problem.1ly the boot animation is visible and not able to enter into the menu.pls give me some suggetions to over come this problem..

Enter in to recovery, wipe cache/dalvik and reboot system, if it don't works then reflash the ROM.
If you are installing the ROM by flashing from CWM Recovery, wipe cache/dalvik before flashing.
If you are installing a custom ROM over another ROM might also cause this problem. so clear data also..

try flashing another custom kernel, and try to enter into recovery.. if you can enter clear cache, data, dalvik and try booting system.
If this doesn't works you might be doing something wrong. please re do the things which I told you in the previous post. It seems you are skipping some parts.
Flashing Stock FW for Xperia U must bring you out of this. Have you tried out finding the correct FirmWare for your device. I think the latest FW is based on jelly bean and build version is 6.2.A.x.xx....
