SII Stuck at Boot Animation - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA Guys,
I have yesterday faced this serious issue, Unable to Boot off my SII - GT-I9100, when I installed a new Boot Animation with ROM Toolbox Pro.
Details: I am using 4.0.3 ICS Stock ROM I9100BVLPB baseband with Build Number IML74k.BVLPB with CF-rooted and CF-5.2 Kernel.
Once I installed a new Boot Animation with ROM Toolbox Pro, last night, it strangely not booting off from that boot animation and stuck at that animation, and is not responding, I tried rebooting several times, and taking off battery, But no luck in getting through with that new boot animation, so I had to Restore to my backed up Nandroid, from the CWM recovery Menu and proceed with the 2 days ago backed up, Working ROM.
So, I was just wondering, if this is a Bug in Rom Toolbox, or inconsistency between the kernel I used, or any other possibilities because of ROM Toolbox Pro Custom Boot Animations?
I have upgraded my kernel to Siyah 3.5.2 Kernel to isolate WIFI issues I am facing with the CF Kernel, whilst performing this Boot animation changes from my Device.
Any Ideas or Experiences?
Thanks
Chaladi

Reflash rom through CWM or Odin. ROM Manager is brick many devices here, don't use it.

I have Not flashed ROM, Just Installed Boot Animation

Didn't use Rom Manager before so can't help on that, plus you did see the animation so it was not permission issue. Perhaps you should try clear cache and dalvik when changing kernel to let it rebuild again. Booting will take a little longer after clear cache.
edit: oh, if i was not mistaken siyah is incompatible with rom manager. Try manually replace the bootanimation.zip in /system/media.

Look, there's plenty posts on here about ROM manager not working properly on s2.You tried to change your BA and you got no boot.
I've had that program give me plenty of work to restore my x10i and sg2.
I'm pretty sure my probs were booting to recovery from there-it wouldn't find recovery and throttle attempts to fix it.
Think I had to reinstall stock ROM,then reroot to get correct cwm to use my nand backup.
I don't know how its dodgy to use, just that it is is enough for me.

Hi, Thanks for the info. Here I am not trying to Flash Kernel, But I did that already; Flashed with Siyah kernel and did that 10 days ago. Now I installed ROM Toolbox Pro and Tried to change the BA, and rebooted my phone to see this new exciting BA... Lucky that I saw the BA, but cannot my Icons, Apps, games waiting there in Home screens.
Your information is accurate, Siyah is not compatible with CWM, I knew that, But donno, If ROM Toolbox too Not compatible; Correct me or guide me in this. Please. Thanks
Thanks

You will have to restore the nandroid backup or reflash your ROM in recovery mode

Hi, Thanks for your information, i will delete the Application right now, But Apologies that It is ROM Toolbox Pro that I used and caused me problems, not ROM Manger. Sincere Apologies and Sorry for this misconception. I unknowingly typed ROM Manager, since I managed it very often.
Any ideas about ROM Toolbox Issues? with BA?

ROM Toolbox Pro Bug, Not ROM Manager issue
Hi Guys, Apologies for the misconception I placed here. It is ROM Toolbox Pro, Not ROM Manager issue I have faced.
I installed new BA with ROM Toolbox Pro, and restarted and ka boom... Device stuck at BA . Gone into recovery mode and restored to working nandroid copy from CWM recovery mode boot options .
Sorry for the wrongly spelt ROM Manager Word. Now I am more that ever informed with this Buggy Applications...:highfive:
Thanks :good:

I got a friend he tried to change BA at his nexus ended up with bootloop as well, anyhow he was using jellybean so I just thought that's the case. Now it seem to have problem on S2 also.
Rom Toolbox was working well on my previous ICS rom, fonts, autorun, and battery icon all works as it should. I'll give BA a try, give me 10 mins :silly:

No problem mate, I always keep a nandroid handy. Currently using paranoid android rom v1.9.5, siyah kernel v3.5.2. Rom Toolbox v5.1.8
Good luck

I'm not sure why everyone is going on about ROM Manager lol
I have used ROM Toolbox many many times and had about a 98 percent success rate.
I've used it to change boot animations, icons and build prop.
The problem is that when you change anything like that you are messing with your phones framework files and errors can easily occur which result in boot loops.
Before making any changes like that always make a nandroid backup and at the very least backup your framework-res. Apk file.
Have fun

Issue with ROM Manager

Hi everyone.
I'm pretty new to android, but I'm quite good at following instructions. Basically I've tried doing a nandroid backup with ROM Manager and everytime it reboots to make a backup it goes to a black screen with a phone in the middle of the screen with a red warning sign next to it. I've always tried booting into recovery and I get the same result. I first found this out while trying to follow the instructions for replacing the status and battery icons. Has anyone else had this issue?
I'm using ROM Manager v3.0.0.1 on a stock HTC MySense ROM from TMO running Android v2.2.1.
Thanks in advance for anyone that knows what I'm apparently doing wrong.
when you opened ROM Manager did you select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"? if not try that, it's the only time mine has what your's is doing. I got a little excited to flash Iced-Glacier when I first got the phone and accidentally skipped that step and had same issue
Yeah I first clicked on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it currently says Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2. I just redid the flash and tried to boot into recovery mode and I'm still getting that error picture upon reboot.
Is there a setting on the phone somewhere that would cause this?
I am not positive 100% but I think I know what you mean; and I had it once due to very low battery charge. See if it is the problem or not.

The phone with the triangle is the stock recovery image. Others have had to try flash the ClockworkMod Recovery several times. You may need to as well.
this is what i did, not sure if your doing the same thing or not. i clicked on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, MY4G came up and i clicked that and then clicked on backup current rom.
Alright so I've tried it with a full battery and I had the same result. I also tried reflashing several times with the current version and rebooting. I even tried to load some of the older versions of clockwork through ROM Manager and everytime I tried it spits out an error. I don't understand how I could be having such a hard time with something everyone seems to be able to do effortlessly.

R u sure u r rooted with S-off? If u r then u may have to flash recovery from ADB. Some people have not been able to get recovery to stick through ROM manager. There is a thread in the development section that explains how to do this.

Really? I have not heard that...I'll have to check up on that. It seems that this problem would be more common, but I guess not as I have had little luck in finding information on my own about this problem.
Just in case anyone is following this thread with the same problem as me, this is the post that the previous poster was referring to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905&highlight=recovery
UPDATE:
Ok I figured out what was wrong. Apparently although I had root access on my phone and able to run things like Titanium Pro and Adfree and others with root privileges it wasn't good enough.
I followed the instructions here on how to permaroot your phone by pushing gfree to it. Once I did that I attempted to manually flash clockworkmod, which I ended up running into other issues. On a lark I tried installing clockworkmod through ROM Manager after permarooting and it finally installed it properly!
I love doing stuff like this, thanks to everyone for their input as it guided me to finally solving this. I'm off to do a nandroid backup now.

IIRC the security protocol doesn't have to be off to flash clockwork ROM you do have to be rooted, VISONary.apk of course. I've turned my S=on just to make sure and it [clockworkROM] works pretty flawlessly.
Hey hey, it's great to see infraled out here! I am rooted/S=Off via the first VISIONary thread that was posted...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
I installed Clockwork, flashed Clockwork Recovery and was expecting to have to do it twice, as outlined in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021
It only took one shot for me and it worked perfectly. The very first try, I powered off, powered on w/ vol down, went into Recovery and wham, there was Clockwork in its green glory. I figured I was just lucky and that once I rebooted, it would be lost and I'd have to flash again. Not so. Did a backup right away, worked flawlessly.

Cyanogen Gets my vote... But i've always loved T/DB's ROMS.
Recently rooted My new MyTouch 4G, downloaded the paid version of rom manager. I didn't understand why there are none of the current roms like the iced glacier, roms made by evil and several others listed as possible roms for flashing. The only roms are the cyanogenmod nightly builds. The cyanogenmod 6.1.2 RC2 isn't listed either. Do I need to do anything to get those listed or is that just the way it is???
Thank you,
Vinny

Help. My galaxy ace keeps restarting itself.

Recently my phone has just been restarting itself allot and it is getting very annoying. The phone would just be sitting beside me and the next thing I see is the Samsung boot screen. It never restarts when I'm using the phone. Just when it's standing by.
I was thinking an emergency firmware recovery through Samsung kies might work. But I'm afraid of losing my apps. If I do this will the apps be removed or will they be there just as usual?
Current android version that i have is gingerbread 2.3.3
Thanks for any help or advice in advance
For me i would back up all my app to the computer (music, videos, pics, apps etc.) and then update.

i doubt there would be firmware recovery available from kies [who uses kies this days].. as your last firmware installation was total there wont be recovery....
if you choose to root [your choice]... you can backup your apps and then try to do anything.... if you just need to backup apks then use AppMonster.. this will just backup apks not whole data with them
try to flash stock firmware with odin again
This hasnt been brought up recently since a lot of the active users here uses CM7 nowadays, so I'm guess that this is simply SOD(sleep of death) caused by wifi.
You might resolve this by turning off the wifi when ure not using it.

Phone restarting with cyanogen mod
I flashed cyanogen mod on my phone and there were no problems until last week. The phone hasn't been restarting just not waking up. Then I have to pull the battery out to get it to go again. My phone can't go 24 hours without we having to restart it once or twice .
Is there any way to fix this. Thanks

sorry for your problem man, but i didn't face such problem.. i'm flash and using almost all of custom ROMs available from various devs.. use them at least a week and its nice..
try flashing it again using cwm 5, may be it will solve your prob.. currently i'm using nims11 infinity v2..
CWM5
Where do you get cwm for galaxy ace. I have version 4 and that might be causing problems with the updated cyanogenmod.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
Is the installation just the same as other versions?
boot in recovery mode and install update from sd?
If I can get cwm 5 from somewhere, I'll give it a go!
If I have cyanogenmod already installed with cwm 4 can I install cwm 5 and not worry about it, or will I need to reflash cyanogen again?
try flashing cwm 5, n then, flash cm7 again..

You flashed cm7.2 with cwm4??Flash cwm5 and then try a reflash of cm7
I've flashed cwm5 then wiped the phone using it then I flashed cyanogenmod, (the one from the xda forums at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292 )
There was no problems, I restored all my apps using titanium backup. Then just a few minutes before this post I came to my phone and it wouldn't light up. (Sleep of death I think you call it?) I had to pull the battery out to get it to go again.
It was plugged into the charger at the time
Bluetooth was on
Wifi was off
Mobile internet was on
Before I locked the screen it was syncing gmail. (This probably isn't a problem)
I have the 'all apps movable to sd card' thing checked in cyanogenmod settings to.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chris.

gotcha. i wish koush would do something about rom manager because the atrix also had a wipping issues on roms and he never fixed it
From my recent experience with the SGSII, the recovery is integrated into the kernel (unlike HTC devices which have a dedicated partition for it). My guess is ROM Manager can't flash it, since it doesn't have the kernel image.

It breaks and does weird crap - I've heard it works OK if (and only if) you are currently on CM7.
But since you're most likely using it to move to/from another ROM... Just three-finger into recovery or if the ROM has an extended power menu use that for recovery.
Its best to just use three-finger or the extend menu power menu like Entropy said. I've seen Rom manager mess up leading to a semi-brick phone.
Hey all,
First time poster and new to rooting.
I ended up attempting to use rom manager to load CWM right after root, but I think that borked my wifi.
What can I do if I've already used it? I did it because I hadn't yet seen all the xda threads on NOT using it, and the place I was was not as well informed as you folks.
Also, how do I get CWM if not via ROM Manager?
My brothers EVO was royally effed up from using ROM Manager. Became a paperweight until Sprint authorized a replacement.

I ended up figuring most of this out so I wanted to close this out (for anyone that stumbles past my original post).
Here's what I did:
I uninstalled ROM Manager - but this didn't get the wifi going.
I reflashed with the stock ROM and unrooted kernel - this still didn't help.
I did a factory reset - this did manage to get it going.
I was able to track down a CWM standalone that I flashed it with (using Odin).
I followed that up with a root, a wipe, and then a fresh flash of UnNamed.
Phone seems to be working fine.

When I first rooted my phone I installed rom manager because it looked easier to just pick the file that u wanted flashed and it would do it for u, so u wouldn't have to play with the volume keys. But every time I tried to do anything with it, it just said certificate not found. Aborting. So u shouldn't use rom manager. I think it works with the roms that u download of the app but not ones from XDA.

If you're on CM7, ROM Manager can be used to install gapps - that's about the only thing it doesn't seem to choke on.

You cannot get CWM via ROM Manager - that is the point. It comes with certain custom kernels such as Entropy's DD kernel. If you do not have a CWM kernel - you will more than likly need to use Odin to get a kernel with CWM.
If you have totally screwed things up - look in the dev thread for "the return to stock" section and start over doing it the right way

Hi first post as well XDA forums so in depth and helpful decided I wanted to be apart of it. Still a noob though ill work my way up.
I am trying acheive the same goal he is, that is to say Instal the UnNamed (it is exactly what I want) Rom on my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
Keep it brief: Rooted my phone using root exploit:
it will not let me post link. the zergrush one
and bellow flashed clockwork mode using stand alone not ROM because of this forum. Model 5.0.2.6
I wipe catch, battery, then format everything. Then I start to flash the ROM. The installation begins. It cleans and formats everything again, then sais that there was an error in the file and it fails. After this if I dont restore my phone will not start. Ive tried it several times being even more thorough on procedure and its the exact same error every time.
Im just wondering if its the way I rooted it is incorrect, The CWM Im using is not the correct one, or if Im doing something wrong entirely. I think it might be CWM but I have not been able to locate one like he did that worked.
Any help, suggestions, criticism or advice would be very helpful. I just thought Id ask. thanks in advance ^^

Bootlooping

When i bought the player which is the 4.0 us player i rooted it and put steves kernel on it thats it. Today my wife said it was bootlooping so i looked at it and sure enough it is. Checked the memory and there is nothing on it. So i download a new rom put it on and wipe then install and it is still bootlooping the original logo even though the new rom has a different boot screen.

Yes people were experiencing bootloops with steve's 3.0. Try installing the klin's R3 custom kernel or Dark_balor's terra silent.
When i installed the kernel it was back in December and it has been working just fine untill today. Still think it is kernel?
You didn't make a cwm nandroid backup, did you? Because that is what bootlooped mine using Steve's. All I did to solve it is: flashed my own backup, that turned out to be no good, and ended in a full brick (epic facepalm, I know!). Then I flashed kwipper's recovery rom found in the development. After a data/cache wipe, it worked fine. Hope you figure it out!

Well you can always use the full recovery method to get back to normal (note that you will lose all your data. Not on the sdcard though but all of your settings and apps.)
well iv already wiped so everything is gone anyway im not sure how you do the full recovery? I have no nand so if that is what your talking about that is out of the question. Found fixing bootloop which has recovery file so im gonna try that.

It seems that you already have an android device before however samsung devices are different from other android devices (or maybe you did have a samsung device too.). They use odin/heimdall flashing with .tar/.img/.rfs files. The recovery method I talk about is at that link:

No problem. Also I recommend using either klin's kernel or terra silent.
ya just did a nand and flashed new kernel and now changing roms.

[Q] SGS2 Noob - Possibly Bricked it??

I have a i9100M that I got recently.
I've been flashing a few different ICS ROMS to try with 100% success and the phone has been awesome.
Then I decided it was getting annoying installing and setting up all of my applications every time I switched to a new ROM so I figured I'd try using the Titanium Backup "All System Data and User Apps" backup and restore.
So I did that, after the restore was done (I went from CM9 to Resurrection Remix 2.5) Everything was working fine for a few minutes but when I was going through some of the RR2.5 settings, the phone suddenly reboot and is now stuck at the boot screen.
It will show the boot animation forever, I've left it for up to about an hour trying to boot.
I can get in to download mode and I've successfully flashed other mods, including a stock ICS image I found somewhere (it was a UK one but I figure that probably doesn't matter?) and they all will just get stuck at the boot animation forever.
Where do I go from here?? Thanks in advance!
If you can't get into recovery to do a factory reset, you only option is to flash something in download mode. If you want to use CM9, use the 'n00b proof' method on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread & flash the Resurrection edition, then the latest nightly & Gapps.
Or flash a stock rom in download mode with Odin, root your phone then restore a backup. Or you could also do a clean install of whatever custom rom you want once you've rooted your phone.

Hi MistahBungle, thanks for the quick response.
Is there by chance a stock rom that you can suggest? I tried one that I found through google and it flashed fine, but it still won't finish booting.
I've tried flashing Resurrection again as well and still had no luck :-/

Try XWLPG. Although there are new roms uploaded by sammobile awhile ago. One thibg you did erong was you restored a system app. You shouldn't have done that.
Edit: Just to make sure, look at sammobile.com for the latest firmware for your phone. Although i9100 and i9100M is similar in hardware, better flash one that is specifically for your device
