Hey, I have just rooted my Galaxy S2 via flashing superuser and cwm recovery via stock recovery. When I boot back into recovery, CWM isn't there. It simply won't stick. Is there any way to permanently install cwm. I am on ICS 4.0.3, with stock kernel with root access. I would appreciate your help as I want to try some custom roms. Cheers and Thanks!

Welcome to the cwm sgs2 world you will need to flash a kernel that has cwm included as its builtin. In other words the recovery shairs its partition with the boot.img that contains the kernel. Its not separate like HTC etc.

Can I do this through stock recovery by flashing the temporary CWM again and flashing the kernel? I would like to make a backup of my stock firmware and kernel. How would I do that? Or do I need Odin? Sorry I am new to this. All help is appreciated? Thanks!
Flash CF-Root/Siyah or other already rooted kernel through Odin. Then use Triangle Away app and enjoy

Yes, with CF-Root you will have permanent CWM. Search forum for proper file for your model.

Is there any way to get a custom recovery installed on the LQ5 ICS 4.0.4 without flashing a custom kernel?
Related to that, all I'm looking for is a way to make a nandroid backup with restore option, so if there's a third-party way of doing it, I'd appreciate any suggestions.
I've always used CF-Root Kernels, but I just Mobile Odin flashed this ROM and I have stock recovery, so the backup/restore features are gone.
Just flash the latest CF-Root kernel via Odin in the PDA section and you will obtain your custom recovery. No other way for it.

I'll be extra cautious, as what I'm seeing here is it might have the emmc brick bug in kernel.
So what ever you do do not wipe using stock recovery.
I'm using the save ROM and loving it. But will wait for any more news.
Though I have wiped multiple times using the dial code.
Yes I believe you just flash the latest CF-Root either via Mobile Odin or normal Odin. As atifsh said, don't wipe anything in the stock recovery as the MMC_CAP_ERASE seems to still be present and will eMMC brick your device, which is a real pain considering Samsung know about this. But it is still only a leaked ROM, so be very cautious.

When I flashed the Stock_LQ5-CWM.zip above, I lost custom recovery and went back to stock recovery.
Chainfire has released CF-Root for LQ5, so problem solved.
Thanks for the input.

Android Version : 2.3.6
Baseband vesion: I9100GXXKL4
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2

If you can enter download mode you have to try flash the phone by old stock rom gingerbread in 3 files version. If it doesnt work you have to use jitag than flash by 3 files rom. By odin ofcourse. Jitag fix triangle.

Since you have the G version, follow the guide

And ensure you flash a custom ROM specific to G version and not I9100 International version.

Can you please confirm if you followed the guide I posted in my first post to resolve the soft brick issue? Before you flash any custom ROM, make sure that you have a working stock 4.0.3 ROM. From the symptoms it seems the kernel is not loading as it should. So first follow that guide to flash a stock ROM.
Once the stock is up and running, you can flash custom ROM and/or kernel.

Nope 2.3.6 should be fine as long as it loads properly and not gets stuck on the yellow triangle.
So next step would be to flash CWM recovery. You will get the detailed steps from second link under custom kernels. Flash it from odin. Once done take a backup from custom recovery and flash any GB or ICS rom from the recovery.

Okk when i flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery 5 from odin , i got stuck with the yellow triangle. i think the problem is in the CWM recovery flashing ! but i can take off the battery and put it on again to go ONLY to the download mode or recovery mode.
i had to re-flash a stock kernel i found on the same thread
The steps on the CWMR 5 thread should not cause any issues.
Just to confirm:
- You are using GB kernel with filename as GT-I9100G_GB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.8.tar
- In odin keep all as default. Do not select partition.
- The kernel tar file is selected in pda.
- No other file is selected in any of other sections.

Hi
I'm have "[I9100][ROM 4.1.2] Stock 4.1.2 JB - real deal" installed to my device now. But I want to get back to custom roms.
Is it possible to root this and flash CWM using Odin? Or do I need first to flash stock ICS/GB using Odin?

I guess the best thing is to check the main features of latest stable roms (based on stock firmware if you want all samsung features) and then try the ones you like the most..
I wanted to try android 4.3 and eliminate all the samsung (mostly useless for me) stuff, so i checked some threads in the forum and now i'm trying the supernexus 3 rom, it's pretty good, with not many customizations, but very lightweight..
