Hello, Just Picked up my S2 I900m today. I am on the Bell Canada network. My previous phone is the I9000m (still love it) which was Rooted using Slim ICS and the Semaphore kernel using the KG3 Modem.
I've spent a few hours reading/research and for some reason the 9100 seems a little more complicated. I basically want a smiliar setup as I had with the i9000.
I think once I get the recovery figured out, I can start by flashing CM9 and then SLIM ICS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Edit: I forgot to mention I bought the phone used so it has been upgraded to 4.03 MUGLD3
well, the great thing with i9100 is that you can basically match anything up (considering of what OS you're in: GB or ICS) unlike that of i9000's, you have to be on that firmware so you can flash that something and etc.
if you have a good background in flashing things in i9000, then you're good to go in the i9100 world

Hi everyone! I've had for an year an amazing Nexus S (aw.. so google..) and now I'm a very happy owner of a GSII (so freakin' fast!). I thouhgt to keep the telephone with the original rom waiting for ICS but... when I saw the so HEAVY personalization by samsung! Sigh... it's so Gingerbread! it even seems ICS!
Now the question.. I've seen so many acronyms near the roms. What they stand for? I mean like XXLPQ, LPQ, LPE, XXLPH or stuff like that.
And what if I would put on a rom that is PURE GOOGLE? I saw the WanamLite, is it stable/fast/daily-use? Do you suggest this or other roms?
How to install cooked roms? With the NS you have to unlock the bootloader, install the cwm and you're done. Do you have to unlock the bl with the GSII? Can I install the cwm with rom manager and then I'm done?
THANKS A LOT!

That is the firmware version and/or region. Latest is ICS XXLPQ.
I suggest you Checkrom v6 (soon ICS!) is the most stable popular and stable rom around.
Thanks, but how? xD
As I said I don't have idea. Any bootloader to unlock? Just download rom manager and install the cwm?
Start with the faqs guides and other stuff all sticked at the top of the page .

galaxy phones can be tricky if you came from a nexus. Basically you have to read the FAQs, but in terms of flashing stuff the biggest difference is that the recovery and kernel are linked. You can't flash a separate recovery, and that's why you can't use clockworkmod.
There is no bootloader unlock thingy also. But you'll need Odin instead.
Keeps these points on mind and then read the FAQs again. And good luck!

Check out galaxys2root.com. It has detailed video tutorials on everything you need.
I bought my GS2 only 5 days ago and already went through installing Resurection remix 9.4, 9.6 and 9.7 and loving it
I've just installed the Omega V5.0 ICS ROM and its awesome, and is based off the XXLPQ firmware
Method,
I started from a 2.3.5 firmware, rooted it using a cf-root-sgs2_xx_oxa_ki3-v4.1-cwm4.zip and odin.
I copied the Omega zip rom to my sd card, rebooted into clock work recovery (the chainfire kernel installed clockwork automatically)
Followed the instructions for doing the thee wipes on the Omega home page.
and did the install from the sd card.
Hope that helps some...
Obivously every custom rom has its own instructions.

how to do a full back up - i saw a guide for the 4.0 but not applicable for the 5.0
upgrading from froyo to ginger bread is it possible to revert back to froyo if anything goes wrong?
is there a cwm that works with the stock 2.2.2? i did search and came up with nothing

Please read here... This thread should answer most of your questions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457
If you are wanting to upgrade to Froyo but are not sure about playing with custom roms, due to fear of bricking, etc... just do a factory upgrade to GB via Kies... no risk in doing so... and if anything was to go wrong, it's Samsung factory upgrade so you should be covered via warranty.
If you are brave enough to venture into custom roms, there are few options available for you. GB roms are pretty safe... no need for pre work... just download the custom GB roms and flash using Odin3... most of these roms will work for both US & INT versions of the players, provided that you flash the right kernel. Anyway... do some reading. Good luck...
Also, if you flash a kernel first, you can make a nandroid backup which can take you back to froyo.

Not really afraid of trying out custom roms i just feel the need to do a full backup before diving in in case something screw up but cant find any guide for doing so
i tried kies but it seems like mea models are not having GB updates from sammy
Flashing the kernel seems like a good idea but is it rom dependent let say rj custom kernel for intl version will it work on froyo assuming it is from GB (not sure)
Again i want to do a full backup before trying things up
Sent from my YP-G70 using XDA
Kernel version is independent of android version. I believe both yp-g70 kernels are based on the source thar Samsung released with froyo anyways.

If you want to install a different kernal, I recommend u to use Entropy512's kernal and when you flash, use an older version of super one click because you need to root it.

No, just flash Siyah v4 (.tar version) via ODIN. v5 also supports ICS but as far as I remember it had some issues.
ok well the kernel I want to flash is the newest for the galaxy s 2 (siyah v5.0.1) so am I ready to flash or is there anything I need to check or do first? BTW is there a possibility I can brick my phone because my mum won't be happy if I brick it
So what bugs does this kernel have that effects ics because im planning to do a nandroid backup then install cyanogen mod 10.1 jellybean?

You can flash it with Odin. Read about it first, so you won't end up bricking it because you've missed something. But if you follow the correct steps you won't brick it.

You can do a Nandroid back up after flashing Siyah. There won't be anything wrong with this back up.

Make sure you dont perform and wipes or cleans before flashing siyaah kernal. Your on 4.0.4 ics which the stock kernal that has the brickbug. I repeat be careful not to wipe, clean or backup anything before you install siyaah kernal. After you have, then its all good mate. Good luck.

I recommend int'l stock. It works great on US devices with a US kernel.
Do I flash this in CWM for the us model ? or something else , becasue it downloaded as .rar. not a .zip

First of all thanks for your effort on this great post. Indeed very useful.
I wish there would be a full recovery for 5.0 like there is for the 4.0 and the 5.0 INTL (I use the 5.0 US).
Anyway here are some helpful things you could expand your post with:

2) Kernels
3) CWMs
4) Full recovery haha
Some reference to how to use it with Odin etc. for noobs.
Thanks again!

Well it's not that hard if toy don't want to go through Odin ABMs all that, you can just flash back to a stock based ROM, not necessarily going all the way back to stock
