I don't think there is a best method. I quite often use CF-root kernels, if available. If not available for a device or a firmware I use the method I proposed in my previous post. Just give it a try

root for xxlqb

Posted on August 7, 2012
in Android Tips
Translate:
Android 4.0.4 XXLQB was released a few days ago for the Galaxy S2 I9100 and at that moment, it was not possible to root. But XXLQB root is now available with full instructions, thanks to a custom kernel. You can easily root XXLQB Android 4.0.4 ICS on Galaxy S2 I9100 using the tutorial given below. We will use SiyahKernel v4.0.
As you continue reading below, we will guide you through the entire process of how to root the official software update Android 4.0.4 XXLQB ICS on Galaxy S2 I9100 using ODIN. Remember, this tutorial is only for XXLQB Android 4.0.4. Go to Settings > About phone to verify what build you have. Please make sure you backup all your apps and personal data as this tutorial will wipe all your data. Let’s continue with the tutorial below.
Disclaimer: All the tools, mods or ROMs mentioned below belong to their respective owners/developers. We (TeamAndroid.com) or the developers are not to be held responsible if you damage or brick your device. We don’t have you on gun point to try out this tutorial
This root method tutorial is only for the official stock firmware. Custom firmwares are usually pre-rooted but even if you need to root any, flash SiyahKernel using ClockworkMod recovery.
Make sure you have installed all your USB drivers for the Samsung Galaxy S II to connect it with the computer. Download Samsung Galaxy S2 USB drivers! Apart from just the USB drivers, there are a few more things that you need to take care of.
1. You need to enable USB debugging mode. This helps to connect your Android phone with the PC. See here: How to Enable USB Debugging.
2. Your phone battery should be 80-85% charged. If your phone goes off suddenly because of battery, during flashing ROMs or installing mods and updates — your phone might go dead permanently. See here: How to Check Battery Percentage.
3. Backup all your important data that you might need as soon as your flash a new ROM, or make a backup for just in case, you never know when anything might go wrong. See below on how to backup data:
Backup your SMS messages. How? –> How to Backup/Restore SMS Messages.
Backup Contacts, Gmail and Google Data. How? –> Sync with Google Sync.
Backup Call History. How? –> How to Backup Call History.
Backup WhatsApp Messages. How? –> How to Backup/Restore WhatsApp Messages.
Backup APN Settings: GPRS, 3G, MMS Settings.
Data can also be backed up using Samsung KIES for their devices, but if you backup data manually, you get more options what top choose from and it is very easy to move data across Android devices from different manufacturers, i.e moving Samsung Galaxy Note backup data to HTC One X.
4. Your phone should be factory unlocked. Additional instructions for locked Android devices will be added in the tutorial for unlocking devices.
Now, let’s proceed with the tutorial on the next page and root Galaxy S2 I9100 on Android 4.0.4 XXLQB ICS official stock firmware.
How to Root Android 4.0.4 XXLQB ICS on Galaxy S2 I9100
We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to update Samsung Galaxy S II on Android 4.0.4 XXLQB ICS with full root access. If you are used to installing official updates through ODIN on Samsung Galaxy devices, then this should not be any different for you.
Please read every line carefully and make sure you read the entire tutorial once before actually performing it on your phone.
To Remember:
This Android 4.0.4 XXLQB root tutorial is only for Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100. Please don’t try this on any other variants of the phone.
This tutorial will wipe out all your data.
Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding.
Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:
Step 1 - Download SiyahKernel Root I9100XXLQB for Galaxy S2 to your computer and extract the zip file.
Step 2 - Download ODIN v1.85 which will help you to root Android 4.0.4 on Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100.
Step 3 - Switch off your phone. Now go to Download Mode. How? Press and hold the Volume Down + Home buttons together, and then press the Power button till you see the construction Android robot and a triangle. Press Power again to confirm to enter into Download Mode.
Step 4 - Make sure you have your Galaxy S2 USB drivers installed on your computer.
Step 5 - Open ODIN on your computer. Connect your phone to your computer while your phone is in the Download Mode.
Step 6 - If your phone is connected successfully, one of the ID:COM boxes will turn yellow with the COM port number. This step might take some time.
Step 7 - Now select the files that you have to flash/install on your phone. These files are to be found from the extracted files in Step 1.
Click on ‘PDA’ and select the file ‘Siyah-s2-v4.0.1.tar‘.
Step 8 - In ODIN, check the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options.
Step 9 - Now click on the Start button in ODIN. Installation process will start and would take a few minutes to complete.
Step 10 - After the installation is completed, your phone will restart. After you see the home screen, unplug your phone from the computer.
That’s it. Your Samsung Galaxy S II has now been rooted on Android 4.0.4 build XXLQB software update. Check for the Superuser app in your apps list to verify.
To make sure you have correctly installed the above root method and it’s working, verify with Root Checker as given in the link.
If you run into any problems, feel free to drop us a comment below and we will reply you back ASAP with the fix or the solution to your problem.

If u use siyah kernel on xxlqb 4.0.4
1: u will lose real time camera display (camera works, but u will be clicking blind photos and will need to check what u clicked after ur done)
2; youtube and video player will not display content. (hardware decoder doesnt work,. u can use software decoder as an alternative)
The siyah kernel doesnt support 4.0.4 XXLQB
Need to wait for a patch from the dev team who are now working on kernel releases for galaxy s3...

No odin it is a flash tool to flash entire rom or kernel.
Kernel are normally rooted so you can flash a tar file in pda and obtain root and cmw to flash custom rom.
To flash you have to put phone in download mode.
Custom rom have different graphics and some feature but battery life is same.
I suggest you cf root kernel to root and gain cmw.
Also to know your firmware version dial *#1234* and check pda

Please read the Quick Root Guide in Intratech's first post of this thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
He describes two rooting method, but as you are running a relatively new ROM, the zergRush exploit method won't work for your phone. (The other rooting method will work fine.)
The easiest rooting method is to flash a rooted kernel, such as CF-Root.
Here is Chainfire's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
Stick to his description.
There are a lot of other "good" kernels which will root your phone, increase performance and extend battery life (e.g. SpeedMod, Siyah, NEAK and RedPill).
You will have to search a little bit and then make your own decision.
P.S.: After flashing an insecure/custom kernel, you will get a yellow triangle at boot and the binary counter will be increased.
That's why Intratech and Chainfire also describe how to get rid of the yellow triangle. Or you buy a USB Jig to remove the yellow triangle and reset the counter.

[Q] SGS II Not showing as rooted?? ICS issue?

Hi Guys
first things first - i am really new to android development so apologies if i am not making any sense...
Device
I have a Samsung Galaxy 2 in the UK on o2
background
I wanted to play with new roms so i rooted the phone and downloaded clockwork rom manager, but could never get it to work, it would always come up with an error screen when i tried to flash a rom using it or ender recovery mode using it.
i used Odin and that works, so after a brief, accidental stint on a US At&T rom that (obviously) didnt work i downloded lite'ning rom and installed it. and that worked fine.
current problem
I recently downloaded an ICS Samsung rom and have installed it using Odin, apart from the occasional glitch it works fine, i cant seem to screenshot so the details are below
Model
GT-19100
Android Version
4.0.3
Baseband version
19100XXLPB
Kernel Version
3.0.15-19100XXLPB-CL99600

i wanted to flash Resurrection Remix ICS ROM v9.6 for Galaxy S2 i9100 but when i go into CWM it is saying i am not rooted, so i ran DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit but is still showing as non-rooted
it seems like my phone isnt allowing the installation of Busybox etc.. on the device, it's saying the folders are read only?
i have the correct drivers, and have selected USB debugging and unknown sources.
any help gratefully received.
many thanks

zergRush isn't for ICS ROMs. You just need CF-root flashed from Odin.
did u try to flash cf root in odin??

CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5-PROPER.zip ***
download this, unzip, put in odin in pda and flash it.
think this will help
this appears to have worked! - will try to flash Resurrection Remix ICS ROM v9.6 and feedback
thanks!
flash worked fine - all seems good.
Apart from some of my previously downloaded apps are not showing up in the 'my apps' section of the google play store for re-download.
any ideas why this might be? - incompatible with ICS maybe?
thanks all

How to Root the device and install a Rom?

Hi, I want to use MIUI on Samsung Galaxy S2, but I have troubles on it.
In this guide, it explains how to install MIUI: dialandroid.com/2012/01/install-miui-v4-ics-rom-on-galaxy-s2.html
However, it also notes that requires rooted phone.
I've searched rooting process around the web. The source I found tells me to use a CF-Root version according to my phone's firmware. I also looked for CF-Root versions. but none of them were seem suitable with my phone's version. (Phone settings shows my baseband version as I9100XWKE1 and Kernel version as 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE3-CL200134 [email protected]#2 )
CF-Root sites I mentioned:
jayceooi.com/2011/08/03/download-cf-root-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/
cepyazilim.com/forum/Samsung-Galaxy-S-2-i9100-Nas%C4%B1l-Root-Yap%C4%B1l%C4%B1r.html
When I *#1234#, I see my PDA: I9100XWKE3, Phone: I9100XWKE1, CSC: I9100OJVKD2.
and when I *2767*4387264636#, I see my Pcode: is GT-I9100LKATUR
I searched samfirmware.com/ but the search didn't returned any firmware.
Then I found an information tells that I may require update my phone via Kies and then my baseband version might be suitable to find a CF-Root version.
But Samsung Kies caused me a lot of problems. In my main PC, I could install the program but it didn't work. I searched internet and found an answer that Kies is a crappy program and the <supportedRuntime version="v4.0" /> lines in config files cause malfunction and need to be deleted.
OK, I deleted them, program seems starting normally. However then I've again encountered a problem, when I press "update firmware" button, Kies behaves like starting the update, but then locks up.
I've searched this problem also, and I saw that problem can change from computer to computer, so if Kies freezes up in a computer, we must try it in another computer.
OK, I installed the program in my netbook, programs seems update normally. However now I encounter weird error messages during update process.
"Timeout error"
"Failed to run firmware upgrade. Unknown error occurred."
Kies shows my Current firmware version as PDA:KE3 / PHONE:KE1 / CSC:KD2 (TUR)
and latest firmware version as PDA:LP7 / PHONE:LPS / CSC:LPB (TUR)
I really bored from all this trouble. Is there any easier way to root the phone and install MIUI?
Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

the nearest Cf-root available for ur Kernel XWKE3 is this 'CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEU_KE2-v4.0-CWM4.zip'
find the same in the link below, dwnld and flash the same thro ODIN to root ur phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283383&postcount=3
since some times exact matching Cf- root will not be available, hence we have to use the closet available one

[Q] stuck on samsung s3 i9300 logo

Hi everyone,
I am having issues with my Samsung S3 i9300. I rooted the phone while using ICS OS, then updated to jelly bean today, via official update. Then unfortunately tried to install chainfire 3D and my phone is now stuck on the samsung sIII i9300 logo.
I have tried to wipe all the data by using volume up + home + power, but still no success.
Furthermore, I was trying to do a fresh install from a downloaded stock firmware from samsung website, but I do not know the exact model number/code for my device as I really did not pay attention before. How can I check the firmware version if the phone does not start?
Please really need your help, as I am new to android and Samsung S3 and I am stuck.
Please any other suggestions?? I have not made any backup (neither with CWM) of the phone, but it does not matter, phone was almost clean.
Thanks in advance!!
Flash a .pda file with Odin.

Any firmware version will work?
Will the firmware version on that link work on my device?
Are there any other special procedures to flash the firmware of my phone (besides the instructions on that link) that I need to be aware of, or just by using the pda with Odin it will work fine? Since my phone was already rooted and so on....
thanks
Might be a kernel so just flash something new.

[Q] Installing a Jelly Bean ROM on an unrooted ICS Galaxy S2 device

Hi everyone : )
I have an unrooted ICS galaxy s2 device and I wanted to install a Jelly Bean ROM similar to the stock. After a little bit of search I think SuperNexus 2.0 is a suitable one, however I'm open to other recommendations.
I did a little googling but I am still confused, as I am new to this whole process and I fear bricking my device.
My inquiry is: If you could provide me with detailed steps, or point me out to useful links that are targeting my problem and would show me how to carry out this operation, that'd be great : )
Device Info:
Device type: Samsung Galaxy S2
My model number is GT-I9100
I've updated my OS to Android 4.0.3 using Kies.
With kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100JPLPF-CL644992
Build number: IML74LJPLPF
Update:
gatsonw suggestion was right on the spot (Y)
The steps I carried out, for others who had my issue:
1. I rooted my device using Odin to flash Siyah v5 Kernel
2. As a precaution I downloaded Titanium backup and made a full backup
3. Also, I made a nandroid backup of the device as well and copied it to my PC
4. I downloaded SuperNexus ROM from the thread I already pointed out above + google apps for Jelly Bean and stored both of them on my internal SD card
5. I made a wipe/factory reset of the device from recovery mode
6. I installed the SuperNexus ROM then the Google Apps from the internal SD card, also through recovery mode
7. Rebooted my device and enjoyed the new ROM

Don't worry, follow the steps on that thread and you'll be alright.
The only thing you have to do is to root your device and flash CWM, your best choice is flashing siyah kernel (it'll get you rooted & you'll have CWM).
Where can you find siyah v5? gokhanmoral.com
