Camera screen turns black after siyah kernel flash - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I'm in a rooted phone, used Liquid Perfection way, flashed insecure kernel and then secure back, then i found siyah kernel, it looks cool!!! So i did flash it, everything works OK, but when you try to use the camera it will take the photo but you can't see where you are shoting, cause the screen truns black!
So I did flash back the secure kernel and camera work OK, takes photos and you can see in the screen.
It's a bug in the siyah kernel (flashed the last release) or it's because my rom? (Russian LP8 LQ6 Samsung stock 4.0.4) Or becuse i'm too noob?
Thanks!

I don't know about the method you used, flashing Siyah gives you root also. If you could flash back your stock kernel and remove the Superuser application (really I'd remove the binary but I haven't a clue how to do that) then flash Siyah Kernel so you'll gain back root access.
Thinking now it maybe a firmware issue, it just may affect 4.0.4.

It's FW bug. Flash 4.0.3.

It's a bug with siyah on 4.0.4 stock ROMs. I had same issue there is an easy fix which is a simple zip flash in this forum which I can confirm works. I think it's in the original development thread. Next siyah update will fix this bug. I also tried Galaxian kernel which is a 4.0.4 kernel and it never had the camera bug.

siyah + ICS 4.0.4 problems help needed

Hi all, and thanks for reading this tread,
I have some issues and I'm hoping someone here could help shed some light on.
I was on ICS 4.0.3 and avoiding 4.0.4 due to brickbug issues. but I guess I couln't resist anymore and decided to give it a try. I tried to stay far away from buggy kernel so I used mobile odin to flash I9100XWLPT plus siyah 3.5.2 on one go
the result was a failure however, kernel flashed but firmware wiped (S2 logo was appearing but nothing else / softbrick ?).
Then I said oh well its not (hard)bricked or anything so I decided to use odin to flash I9100XWLPT, than siyah. It went ok but I lost mtp connectivity, tried s3 ported ui... didn't fly as well . Maybe something wrong with siyah 3.5.2 I thought, so tried an older siyah which I did not have an issue with h4.0.3. Situation did not improve however.
Then I flashed my old 4.0.3 and wiped, all ok mtp ok, upgraded to 4.0.4, all go, mtp ok.
Flashed siyah 3.5.2, mtp fails again. Tried android's own factory reset (not the on the boot menu, one on the personalization menu). Ended up with soft brick again (no boot only charging animation and odin mode). Flashed 4.0.4 again.
But this trial and eror process is going more dangerous by the minute I guess, so I decided to ask for support.
Do I do anything wrong? I want to upgrade to 4.0.4 everything as close as possible to stock, plus root and tocuhwiz from s3. its not too much to ask I guess.
Any suggestions and any explanations are very welcome also,
I'll thank any useful comments
kind regards,
I have 4.0.4 since 4th July with its stock kernel and it works perfectly well, I upgraded from 4.0.3 but I never did any wipes just updated on top of 4.0.3 and booted the phone, rooted from chainfires CF root thread, try it that way, worked for me and still is working.

Thanks If all else fails I'll try that, but siyah is a good kernel and it seems to be more battery efficient too.
If its a problem I failed to check with siyah I can go 4.0.4 kernel way but it makes me nervous to run a buggy kernel.

Totally agree Siyah is good I used it on 4.0.3 but it seems to fail on 4.0.4 at the moment I have not actually tried the latest one so it may well be good but I am looking to upgrade to SG3 next week so just want to keep my phone going for the time being no more playing around with this one until I have my new one.
I am using LQ5 which is reported as the buggiest but I can honestly say I have not had any problems at all, battery life appears good enough to me, depends how much you use it I guess.
Try speedmod k30 kernel, completely safe, fast and battery efficient

Thanks, pardon me if I'm being paranoid but I just read a tread about nand corruption so, this isn't something like that I assume. (Odin flash failed and left me with soft brick out of the blue). Did not notice anything about siyah 3.5.2 either so the problem may be with my phone memory.
P.S Prior sentence reads as "Please prove me wrong"
I switched to speedmod kernel, and figured siyah had MTP problems with either 4.0.4 ics or 3.5.2
I asked same questions to those kernels' respective topics & thus this tread fulled it's purpose. Thanks kindly for anyone who read & replied

Little question about Siyah kernel 3.4.1

Is it safe from 'brick-bug'? (The CAP_ERASE, hardbrick when wipe data or restore from backup with 4.0.4)
Thanks
yes, siyah has disabled it in all his kernals.
good to know, thanks!
WOW
Nice bro, thank you for the straight answer. Man I been searching and studying this thing forever and finally found a person who gave a direct answer. Much respect from my side. I have flashed my phone hundreds of times with siyah kernel, the only kernel I ever use but the got brick bug app says I have an insane kernel. And so my never ending mission for a simple answer began. I use the xxlpq modem and yet some places suggest the xxlpq 'FIRMWARE' has the brick bug for sure. This whole kernel modem leaked official story confused the heck out of me. But now thankfully I have an answer but am still confused as a duck in a waterfall. If I am getting it correctly, a modem is different from a firmware when using siyah kernel and a custom rom, not an officially released rom? So when I use, let say PFittech 4.04 rom and xxlpq modem with siyah kernel, then I am safe because the creator of the awesome siyah kernel has not included the cap_erase robocop destroyer thingy?
However, if I had to try flash to stock and used cf root/odin and then flashed the xxlpq firmware(leaked or not), then it is relatively certain I will get hard bricked and ruine my year? Anyways, this flashaholic feels more at ease now. Thanks for your simple reply, it is rare these days.

Siyah kernel has disabled the cap_erase command, Yes.
If you are on stock ICS 4.0.4, then flash Siyah 3.5.2 and above.
3.4.x and below are not 100% compatible with 4.0.4. If you flash it, your camera app will be displaying just black screen.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
All the latest Siyah Kernel has no brickbug on it. Currently using 4.0.2

[Q] About which kernel to use

howdy,
I just got this i9100 with the kernel : 2.6.35.7-i9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] #2.
I'd like to put cfroot and clockword etc.. on it but I got a little bit confused.
From what I understand I have to put a newer version kernel on it with similar name "XWKDD".
I tried to find a similar one in the chainfire thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 but i couldnt manage.
So basically my question is which kernel do I use if I want to put a miui or resurrection remix or any 4.1 ROM on it?
Can i just put this Dorimanx one on it via Odin? That seems to work with everything?!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617219
Also the phone is running stock 2.3.3, rooted but it doesnt have custom recovery.
One more thing if I put another another kernel on it, the I mentioned for example, will it still run the stock Gingerbread?
Thank you in advance
I recommend you to upgrade your phone to ICS, then flash custom kernel and ROM.

Well I tried to update it with Kies, but the bloody thing just crashed on me so I'm pretty afraid of that evil program.
Can I upgrade the official ICS with Odin too?
Also if I do it with Odin is it enough if I only put the ROM on it? Does that update the kernel too (same for the kies if i try again with that, that updates the kernel too?)?
Btw i couldnt find a stock kernel with this code that mine has

Siyah won't work on GB. you can upgrade to stock ICS via Odin. Download a 4.0.3 firmware for your device from sammobile.com and install via Odin. Then flash a custom kernel. For the ROMs you mentioned, siyah is preferable simply since dorimanx has a couple of versions. And determining which version will support which ROM might get a little confusing if you're just starting out. Just my opinion, start off wit siyah, then can switch over to dorimanx later when you figure out which versions support which ROMs.
Good luck.
EDIT: yes, just installing the ROM (firmware) is enough. It'll include the stock ICS kernel along with it.

I found the Siyah 4.1.5 kernel I assume this is it, http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/09/08/siyahkernel-s2-v4-1/, does it put custom recovery and root on it automatically?
Yes.but first you'll have to be on ICS.

does it matter which regional ICS i download? I mean, the guy i bought it from said its originally unlocked, but at boot UK O2 pops up /im not using O2 tho so it seems to be true, im just sayin .
Not so much. The only difference between firmwares for different regions is the modem. If after rooting you find your signal isn't as good as it was earlier, you can always flash a different modem at a later stage.

Right Kernel for Build IML74K.XWLP7 for root

Hello.
This is the first time I try to root an Android device (Samsung Galaxy SII, Andoird 4.0.3, Kernel 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected] #3, Buildnumber IML74K.XWLP7)
I've tried to figure out which kernel I have to use and I think found the right one but I'm not 100% sure.
So, can anybody tell me if this is really the right kernel:
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip: download.chainfire.eu/154/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_DX_XTC_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Many thanks in advance!
By the way: What would happen if I choose the wrong kernel?

Siyah v3.x should work fine, not sure about 4.x and later because some were made for 4.0.4 where were changes according to camera and issues backwards for 4.0.3.

Should be fine, anyway any kernel from 4.0.3 ROM would fit, I was using XXLP7 with XXLPG kernel and no problems at all. They will work unless not different codes ex UHLPZ with XWLPW ROM.

Device won't boot, recovery will be available (stock e3 or if available cwm), some features won't work, as camera described above... nothing that can harm your device, just keep in mind some kernels are unsafe to wipe via cwm recovery, everything can be reflashed back with odin.
Thank you very much for your quick reply!
I would recommend starting with Chainfire's LP7 kernel. It's safe and you'll get root. From there you can research into and try other kernels.

Issues with ShoStock3 ROM + Siyah Kernel

Just want to check if anyone here has come across with the following issues...
I recently flashed my SGS2 with ShoStock3 ROM (big thanks to shoman94) + Siyah kernel (big thanks to gokhanmoral). It runs smoothly and seems to have no noticeable issues. However, I noticed these three issues after some go through:
1. Shostock custom boot animation doesn't run at start up. I tried to change the bootanimation.zip using the Root Explorer, but nothing happened.
2. Microphone (when using Google Now voice and Viber) doesn't work. I looked through every settings and found nothing's wrong except that.
3. I can't take a video using the video feature in Instagram, which I didn't bother to check how come.
What I did was reboot my phone into recovery and re-flashed only the ShoStock3 ROM. After I restarted the phone, shostock boot animation showed up and I tested voice feature in Google Now and it worked. Then, I tried the video feature in Instagram and voila, it worked too.
I'm not really sure if they are directly caused by Siyah kernel, therefore, I ask if anybody here has come across with these similar issues. I really like the Siyah kernel coz of CWM and STweaks and I'm wanting to revert to that if I find a resolution to the above issues.
My hardware details:
Samsung Galaxy S II AT&T SGH-i777
Version 4.1.2
Baseband i777UCLK3
ROM ShoStock3 XWLSD v2.5.1
Kernel (Present) Jeboo
