EVO LTE top cover - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Finally took my LTE out of the crappy cover I bought due to its brittleness, and realize that I had forgotten how slick the top SD card cover is.
Has anyone seen an aftermarket replacement top cover yet? I can't seem to find any...
Sent from my EVO LTE via Tapatalk 2

Probably not due to the antennas in the cover. I would like to see one with better antennas integrated.

I rubberized mine with Plastidip. Totally stock feeling and has way more grip now.

Plastidip... Ingeresting. I've used it for low wear automotive applications, and it IS awesome. I am not sure how it would hold up in this case. Worth a shot though!

Yep planning on doing whole rear of phone when I get around do it. Top cover, middle, and bottom. Totally uniform look with the gripyness it provides
Plus if you add a little fine sand to it, it'll make it that much better to hold. I thought up of all kinds of idears when I read that on the tips section on the can.

Update on my plasti-dip work I did on my phone:
I'm actually quite experienced with using plasti-dip for many applications on many surfaces.
I dismantled my phone and cleaned everything with alcohol and wiped it down and then applied Plasti-dip.
It looked and felt great for a few days.
Then the corners started to peal up. Once that begins, it's done for.
It seems the constant friction to the edges of the applied areas with your dirty/oily fingers will break it down quick enough to not make Plasti-Dip worth doing.
It was worth a shot.

Carbon Fiber It!!!! see my thread and let me know!!

I don't see how the plastidip is peeling off so quickly for people... I've seen people plastidip entire cars and have it last longer than a week. You might want to try to tape off all the tabs and spray a little under to seal the edge.

[Q] Metal Bezel Already Showing Wear?

I've been a (very) proud 3VO owner since July 2nd. I can be rough on my gadgets / phones, but i've been treating this one well. I have started to notice some of the black paint wearing off around the top of the metal bezel (specifically between the light sensor and the headphone plug). It is mainly on the sharp edge / corner, but is also showing in a few other places. I'm assuming it is from the phone being in my pocket rubbing on coins. Keys are always on a carabiner, knife is in other pocket, and don't carry a lighter.
My question is this: Has anyone actually sanded that piece down and polished it? I know it is not going to be a high grade metal, but I'd imagine if the phone was tore down that piece could be precisely sanded and buffed. Even if it was a little rough, a brushed metal look would be pretty slick looking around the phone. That bezel does have some printing on it around the camera button for "2D 3D Camera Mode", but who cares. We know what it does.
I'm afraid after a few months of use this thing will look like it's been through hell and back.
Get a case.

A high gloss polish would look too iphoney (2g/3g variants.)
And a brushed metal style would look too similar to LG line of current phones. In my opinion.
But.. To me. I like how roughed up metal looks. So, some worn paint, maybe some rust spots would look kinda bad ass to me. Lol.

Well thats the thing I have NEVER dropped my E3D and it has been in a Otterbox Defender since the day I bought it. I pulled it out to clean it and make sure there was no dust in there and I noticed the paint chips.

I just bought mine this past weekend but if this is a wide spread problem it'll suck. I wonder if a fine grain would remove the black paint without roughing up the medal. If I were to do this will it void the terms of the sprint protection plan? Heck I wonder if they will fix this problem under the TEP program.

Answer: No, it's not a problem, it's normal wear and tear.
OP, you could definitely try your idea. But in addition to that, I put any coins I have in my other pocket. Nothing goes in the same pocket as my 3D except maybe a piece of paper on occasion.

I've dropped my phone where the metal bezel has a scratch and now is bare. Using a sharpie marker works but the marker wears off after a while. I used a sharpie marker and then used a tpu case. The problem solved.....for now.

I do have OCD and I have had a Otterbox Defender on my phone since the day I bought it! So I think its gonna keep happening no matter what I do!
I'm still in my 30 days and I also have dust under the screen so I might get a replacement anyway.
This aluminum frame that is on the front and sides of this phone is a really bad move by HTC... ive been xtra careful especially for my thirty day period... and rite ontop of front speaker there is a little white spec, it isnt a dent or scratch but a white small mark.. I see more problems to come with this aluminum front... And im not the one who likes wearing rubbers for protection i like my phone naked and just wear a phone holder on belt.. this is just another problem for the evo3d.... this along with the signal.,heat issues maybe because of radio, stupid sensative cheap power button.. all making me go back to my e4g... never had any of those issues i just mentoned.
I've got a small dot exposing the metal on mine. Its not that noticeable but just in case I now have a case on it.
Well as luck would have it I noticed something white on one of the corners of the phone do I rubbed it with my thumb and some of the black paint came off, same thing happened with the bottom corner. This phone is just 5 days old! I haven't had many of the problems manifest as discussed in other threads so I wouldn't want to return it but I am certainly contemplating it.

Yep it doesn't matter how careful you its gonna happen! Even with a case it happened to me then I took my case off for 3 days and another one showed up and I treat my phone like gold I am actually way over protective with it. I'm thinking of taking it back and getting the NS4G! I have dust under my screen now the paint is chipping and my rear speaker sounds like ****, I'm just scared the problems I have now are only gonna get worse.
Wow another problem. I too have paint chipping on the left side on the lower part by the screen. I rubbed it thinking it was dust and now it's silver. It also looks like the plating is slightly bent. And I also have a small white dot right under the sense on the metal part. Looked at my Shift and 4G and I see nothing like this and I used the hell out of those. As opposed this one, which is already a replacement for other issues.
Its 3 days old ffs. I've barely used it. Exchanging it is useless, its the build quality. It's going to happen to all EVO 3Ds sooner or later, even with a case and super care. Within a few months it will look like crap.
Oh well, I'm definitely returning this, but I'll do it after I have some fun with it. I hope the SGS2 has superior build quality, I think I can live without Sense from now on.
My wife has never dropped hers. But its bad. I dropped my phone once on some rocks. Small silver scratch on the face.

[HOW TO] Sanding Top Cover to Matte Black - DIY Instructions

[HOW TO] Sanding Top Cover to Matte Black - DIY Instructions
Attempt this physical modification at your own risk. None of the individuals mentioned in this post, nor those who offer advice and opinions outside of this post, are responsible for any success/failure you may experience during your attempt.
Credit for this idea goes to boonxeven
Credit for this How-to write up goes to mrnamster. I simply made a standalone thread for it, added some process modifications, and added some pictures of the sanding job I did on my LTEvo.
**CLICK HERE** to view the original thread and please make sure to click the thanks button on boonxeven (OP) and mrnamster's (p. 4) posts.
Materials
600 grit or finer wet/dry sandpaper, cut and folded
1000 grit wet sandpaper, cut and folded (optional)
Water to unclog sandpaper. I used a spray bottle.
Lint-free cloth (for wiping)
Evo LTE cover, removed from phone
Knife, flathead screwdriver, or flat safepry tool. (optional Step)
Superglue(Optional step)
Procedure
Remove Camera lens from rear cover by breaking soft welds in the areas indicated in the pictures below. (optional step)
Pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/Concordium/IMAG0108B.jpg
Wet sandpaper
Lightly sand the cover using a small symmetrical circular motion. Start with the difficult areas first (around lens cover and on rounded edges). Do the sharp edges last as those sand quickly.
Use the folded end to sand around the lens cover. You can opt to press the lens cover off or tape it. It's metal so it's not likely to scratch.
Pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/Concordium/IMG_1123.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/Concordium/IMG_1120.jpg
Wipe with damp lint-free cloth, let dry and resand any spots if necessary.
Pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/Concordium/IMG_1119.jpg
***Remember, your cover is going to look horrible until you finish the job. So if you start getting nervous halfway through when your cover looks like the picture above then don't worry. It's normal until everything gets evened out.
Pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/Concordium/IMG_1128.jpg
Periodically dip the sandpaper in water if it starts to get clogged (usually turns white as it builds up).
(Optional Step) Use 1000 grit wet sandpaper to even up stroke marks and bring the entire rear cover to a nice, clean and even finish.
Rinse, clean, and dry rear cover before reinstalling.
Using superglue, reinstall camera lens cover onto phone rear cover. Superglue is used to ensure a solid fit. (optional step)
Notes
Take your time to lightly sand away the gloss finish of the paint by applying minimal pressure to the sandpaper. Periodically wipe, let dry and sand some more. If you sand too much it will dig into the plastic and turn light black/gray.
Do not try to rush this job. Using large strokes or trying to sand using rapid strokes will not make the job go any faster. If anything it will make it take longer due to the uneven and sloppy results such a method will yield. Patience is the key here. Slow and steady will yield the best results.
Avoid getting the inside of the cover wet. If you do happen to get it wet make sure to dry the entire inside, especially the metal contacts, thoroughly before reinstalling onto your phone.
A soft brush helps clean the nooks and crannies when done.

Nice info. I was about to do this but then I bought a TPU case instead.
I didn't think the matte and glossy finish was a big deal before, but now that I've seen this, the dual finish really looks odd. It's like someone broke the top part of the phone and then salvaged part of a case from a different phone.
The back should have been all matte.

EVO Brushed Metal Mod

I'm working on a theory, please correct me if Im off base.
So, the brushed metal band around the side... appears to simply be a brushed portion of a larger piece of metal that represents the non-glass parts of the front and the lower half of the back.
I remember hearing that the Evo would have a uni-body design, but the all everyone talked about was how there were "soo many different kinds of plastic" and I just figured that the uni-body was just a rumor.
Many have seen this, but here is the tear-down video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiKpHr8RLBs
It certainly looks like it does in fact have a single piece of metal making up a majority of the chassis. If thats true, then couldnt the same finishing technique be applied to the entire piece of metal? I havent looked to far into the actual brushing process, but at the very least, it would seem that someone could (again, in theory) sand off the powder coat black.
Here is a quick photoshop of what such a creature might look like: (attached)
Someone here has already sanded the soft touch finish of and he left it shiny. You could easily brush it from there.
i'll wait until lte backing parts show up on ebay, just in case i fugg up lol, or it looks ugly

New Custom Aluminum Case

Just getting a feel for who would be interested in a case like this for our beloved eVo's? I'm currently in the design stages yet but open to suggestions on changes! Let me know what you guys think! Custom engraving on the back will be available in time....also color options are also still up in the air.
will most definitely take one if you get them produced. are you milling them out on a cnc?
Black and Im in.
Yes they will be machined on a cnc and will be produced by myself.
SteelH,
I'm a fan of black so most likely I will probably do the first run in black.
also here are pics of it in black.
Awesome, unique design man.
My only thing is, if it is dropped it appears the only contact the case has on the outer rim of the phone are the posts in each corner...
Would dropping on a corner or edge focus too much force through that small area and cause screen cracks, cosmetic damage to the phone itself?
Just an observation I had. Hope it helps!
I plan to use rubber corner posts to help prevent some damage to the phone hopefully!
I would probably get one. Any ideas on cost?
Those are pretty sweet.
Either black or a brushed aluminum and i'm totally in.
I haven't figured up a price yet....still need to get some quotes for anodizing.
Some kind of card slot for credit cards pin the back would be amazing! I'm really interested in this, you've got sat least one buyer
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
if the price is right them im definitely in. curious, will it be straight aluminum or will the outside be a soft rubber almost like the back of the original evo? if not then i could always coat it in some platidip (basically liquid rubber spray paint) looks very nice on everything haha and it peels off.
curious tho, where did you get the dimensions from? did you measure them or is there a 3d cad model floating around of the evo it self. im currently in a cad class and would love to see what things i could stir up based off of a model wouldn't produce anything tho since the only way we have is a 3d printer that uses a brittle plastic
I second the suggestion to add card slots! maybe 2 or 3? I would DEFINITELY buy one if there were card slots. I have been searching for a case for our EVOLTE that has this feature.

I got the dimensions of my eVo just measured it up with my caliper!
As for the coating I have thought about getting some sort of liquid rubber to dip them in but would like to know what others think of this?
Also as for card slots I will try to come up with something after this work week as I will be on the road all week for work.
Keep the suggestions coming!!
Also just was thinking about the card slots......to do a card slot you would have to sacrifce the kickstand....If you guys are fine with that then I will put the time into designing one with a slot in it.
The other option would be to put a external kickstand on it but would require more designing and more money to build it.
Just some options to think about!
Won't this block the antennae? Cell reception is already weak enough on ltevo. I would think the entire plastic cover area would need to be either exposed or only covered with plastic or wood or glass.

When you take the cover off there is actually a plastic piece on the top of the cover where the IR sensor would be. Take that piece out before you do anything and then just put it back when you are done. Will not effect IR Blaster.

It really looks good in person. The grip is great. It wont slide around if it was on a smooth surface. It really feels like a really high end battery cover.
Ummm...I still prefer the stock look since that material doesn't look like it would be as comfortable.
May I know why ya had to paint and plasti-Dip?
Is plasti-Dip enough?
Also, is removing the back cover that easy? I'm having doubts on my international set..
Btw, thanks for posting the pics!

I plasti dip first so if I decided to take it off it would come off easy since the first layer is plasti dip and not just paint. You can definitely just use plasti dip but be aware that it might not last as long since you are constantly putting it you pocket. The edges might start to come off. After I painted the cover with a couple of coats, I also did a couple of coats of clear finish on it just to make sure.
Removing the back cover on my Verizon LG G2 was very easy. I picked a corner and was able to pull away the corner just enough to slide a plastic wedge in, and then i slowly and patiently moved it along the sides separating the cover from the phone. Just be careful and go slow and you shouldnt have any problems.
I wish I had the testicular fortitude to even think about trying it. Glad it worked out for you as that back has to be my one and only annoyance with the phone (other than the small buttons - but wireless charging is a nice trade off if that's what it took).

Should have taken during pictures..!
Awesome. I did the same thing on my old GS3 but it ended up peeling off in a week from going in and out of my pocket. Other than that it was sweet.
