I went to Cyanogen RC2 from RC1 and after it hanging in the OS I decided to reinstall the RC2. That managed to stuck the phone on the boot screen (triangle), got into recovery mode and had plans on deleting cache and factory reset but the phone hung again on deleting the cache so took out the battery and now its not even starting up at all. Left the battery out over night and didn't do any difference to me trying to get any life out of the phone.
I decided to attack this problem starting at the lowest cost lowest impact way possible. I got a USB JIG, recently got it and while I was waiting the more I read online made me thing that this JIG wouldn't work on my brick. Correct it didn't work, tried it for about 1 hour yesterday with lots of different approaches. SO now what's my options?
Have looked at different ways of doing a JTAG repair, solder lots of tiny cables onto the mobo and run them to a RIFF box and resurrect from the computer or solder a little chip onto the phone and stick a PCB ontop of it and then use the RIFF box to resurrect the phone. Is there any way possible that I can go down the route of getting the PCB + Chip together but NOT get a RIFF box? (some other way of communicating to the phone via my computer) ?
Don't have funds to go out and spend monies on a new phone and can't send the phone off for repairs. I'm ok with soldering but would rather not have to go down that route...
Help!
Why can't you send it for repairs?
If it is HBricked then nothing will get it back to life, needs a new mobo!

i would try another battery first, or get an external battery charger. I had a similar problem turned out i had drained the battery that much it wouldnt charge by phone alone, and hence wouldnt turn on and showed all the signes of a brick.

Hmm It's hard bricked almost 99% sure of it, isn't that what the JTAG repair is for?
<google jtag repair and click the second youtube video>, can't paste it.
^ something like that?
CM kernels are safe and don't have the hardbrick bug.
Which kernel did you have ?

Can't send phone off for repairs, if I can't fix it alone I need to break it for parts maybe.

I tried with a spare battery that 100% worked before I bricked it, same problem. I tried a charger in and tried the +/home/power no result. Tried -/home/power no detection on computer. Tried charger, jig, jig charger. You name it I've probably tried it.

I'm not 100% sure as far as I'm aware I started of with the OEM kernel, followed below link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
(it's been updated since I did mine so not on the latest...)
After that (once clockwork was there I've used that to boot into recovery and flashing with latest nightlies for a while until I went into RC1 to RC2)
Does your Pc recognise the fone at all? Have you tried diff USB leads etc, diff ports on the pc?

Tried one usb lead into the computer that my HTC DESIRE HD worked with (on the same port on the computer) tried different ports on the computer when it did not work, also tried to get the phone into download mode with -/home/power. I'm currently trying to see if I can confirm this is bricked and not in download mode (gone in there automatically) by following a guide on here, just tried to find it there but wasn't able to. Don't have linux on my laptops so decided to go down the route of installing virtualbox and a slimmed down version of ubuntu server. (had other issues with that yesterday with a dodgy battery in the laptop and power plug falling out... :cyclops
Found this just now so see it's supposed to work under Windows so might give that a try now on my other laptop?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
Tried the Heimdall stuff and that didn't work, didn't think it would since there is nothing happening when I stick the usb cable in
Will a JTAG repair work? As in get the JTAG box, get the pcb and the little socket to fit on the mobo
Just a quick addon, I left it plugged into the computer and noticed that the top part of the phone (not the battery but from the top of the battery upwards) gets pretty warm borderline to hot. Not sure why the battery itself isn't heating up. Might take it in and try a 3rd battery from a working S2 in work tomorrow.
Personally I'd take it to a local shop that has exp & knows what he's doing, fair enough you say you can solder- but have you seen a SGS2 mobo? I wouldn't take the chance

when I install a new motherboard for my pc I reverse the USB cable into the motherboard.
when I turn off the phone( galaxy s2 ) it does not go out really, there are two alternates image, one with a battery and an empty battery with a yellow triangle and a thermometer.
And to restart I have to remove the battery and once I remove it several times!
Now I have MTP application all the time when I have unlocked a few seconds to go in the menu or I'm stuck on that. What is this madness!

probably over heating or something. 1st time I ever saw that too.
OP, does the phone seem hot to you? To turn off MTP, you have to turn on USB Debugging.
Settings > Apps > Development then reconnect the USB cable
there are few people on the net seeing that warning image..
if you google "Samsung Galaxy S2 battery thermometer warning" you will see few forums regarding this problem pop up..
some people apparently reset the phone and the warning page disappeared.. Some used different battery.. but some people still had the problem even with a different battery..
by reading few forums, i think it's a random warning (if your phone is not physically overheating). may be just turn it off, take the battery out and start it again in few minutes and see how that goes...
or you can always take it back to the shop under warranty.
good luck mate
It could have something to do with the battery or the heat sensor. Either could be malfunctioning. If i were you i'd go back to the shop with the warranty.
you can get a replacement usb board part of the phone. could be a easy fix, but only if it really is that part which damaged.

I am reading this as you have blown /fried the USB connection by wiring the connector from the PC wrongly .That could be and or further components like battery charging blown components .
You wont fix that without a service centre as its blown electronic components by shoving voltage down the wrong path .

Ok I'm really bitter right now. My wife and I each have an S2. Mine has been fine for the last 2 months and hers recently starting having problems. It keeps thinking that a USB cable is plugged in.
A Google search reveals that this is indeed a common hardware problem.
When you do a restart, you get the battery icon and flashing yellow triangle with the thermometer symbol. And the only way to get it to boot up is to plug it in.
The device functions fine other than that, but other than connecting to Kies via USB, there is no other USB related functions that is working.
Gonna give Samsung support a call and see how I can warranty this. Hoping it's not going to be a painful process.
Anyone else having the same problem? How did you resolve it? New replacement? Did they repair? How long did it take? What did you do?
Thanks.
I have the same problem, started with me recently, I had my phone with USB debugging mode on.
Can't confirm when it started for sure, but it may have been because I disconnected it from my computer once, before ejecting the device through windows explorer.
In any case, I can't turn on the phone now without removing the battery or having it plugged in.
I received the battery at 100% notification and it doesn't leave when I unplug the device.
It's become very flaky, and I don't like it. Did you have any luck with Samsung support?
Anyone have any information on this or another link to how to fix this? I'm getting the temperature gauge and can't figure out how to fix it!!

Brother had the same problem. Try adjusting the piece in the USB port of the phone either up or down. I used a small flat head screwdriver. Make sure the phone is off and battery out.

Yeah - get a replacement.
I had similar issues with mine. Took it to Carphone warehouse in uk. And they replaced usb port within 30 mins. Its a common fault.
Try to clean USB port.
This morning I just noticed this problem with my phone and I also noticed that under the battery stats it shows that the phone is always charging.
If I reboot the phone sometimes I lose about 20% from the battery, but then it starts to recharge although the phone is not plugged in.
I will try to change the battery with a friend of mine, maybe it's battery related, I will report back.
I suppose that the problem of discharging is:
A) when connected it can't enter in deep sleep mode
B) vbus_present eating battery

Hey,
Major issue I'm facing today. I first noticed this about 2 days ago, I'm currently running Resurrection Remix 2.0 and has been installed for about a week? with no issues.
Two days ago, I put my phone on to charge at night, as usual. Woke up the next morning and by mid morning Noticed my battery was at 15%, When I checked the battery stats, It looked as If the battery had not charged ( I'm pretty sure it had been on charge, but put it down to the fact that It wasnt plugged in correctly)
Next Day, (last night) I put it on charge, and checked it was definitely on charge, which it was. I woke up this morning to find the exact problem, this time at 50%, When I remove the power cable the charging animation still continues.
I turn the power off, Remove the battery and wipe battery stats and start back up, over the next 20 minutes the battery stats increase my battery percentage (not charging) and then continue to drop later on.
Tonight my phone had drained its battery, thought it would be best to drain it, leave it off on charge and turn it back on. I've come to turn it back on removed the power cable and now it will not turn on but constantly loop through the Charging animation icons..
Does anyone know the fault for this or even a fix? I cant boot into my rom, or even CWM
urgent help needed!! thanks in advance

may be a kernel change would also help u ...
Pretty straightforward really. Either a battery problem (less likely) or a problem with the USB/charging circuitry (more likely; we see it on here all the time).
Try another battery & see if you can get the phone to boot. Otherwise, service centre.
As KMs said, you might as well clean the USB port while you're at it, and then try a new battery (at least you'll have a spare when you get it back from repair).

Okay tried cleaning it with a tooth brush but no luck, the phones been playing up all day, still saying its charging even though Its not plugged in lol. Just got back home to back everything up do a full wipe and update the rom to the latest version+ kernel and its not even being recognised by USB, it'll charge, but not recognise
Is this a common problem with the S2 then? that the usb fails/malfunctions?
Think I'm gonna have to take it back to three on Monday, hopefully get it repaired/replaced asap ( but will need to flash back to original stock ROM + Kernel first!)
We've seen our share (I've seen at least a couple of dozen) of these in Q&A over the time I've been here (~8 mths), yeah.

Here, Samfirmware.com or you can get the latest firmware for phone model/country/carrier that you'd normally get via OTA update with the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google).
Thanks again for all your help.

Downloaded the firmware, however I cant seem to find how to update OTA, Its given me a .tar which I could use Odin to upgrade, However as I cant get it to read from USB I cannot get Odin to detect my device
That's probably due to the USB circuitry problems you seem to be having. Might want to use Mobile Odin (get it from Google Play) to flash the firmware. If it's an ICS stock rom, you should be able to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.
Hey guys..im also experiencing the same problem.....sometimes charging stopped halfway....when i check with the "battery widget" it says overvoltage (with " ! " symbol)....
is it because the firmware problem or usb port or charger problem ? any solution? Tq in advance guys !
Did you even bother to read the thread ? Go back to stock & see if this resolves the problem. Then clean the USB port with an unused toothbrush or similar. Try a new battery. Try a new charger. And if none of these fixes things, service centre.

Hi guys.
Just now I was trying to use my phone and suddenly it couldn't turn on anymore. I searched around in the internet and found out that it might be the problem of motherboard.
It doesn't turn on at all. So I am wondering if I change my motherboard, will the data inside be wiped too?
I am okay with the apps and stuff but I don't want to lose the pictures, contacts and my texts.
Any idea on what I can do ?
I really really really don't want to lose those 3 things mentioned.
Thank you a lot for any replies
What (if anything) did you do to resurrect your phone?
Did you remove the battery for some minutes?
Did you try turning it on with the help of a USB Jig?
Does the phone charge?

As far as I know the memory is part of the MBO so if it gets replaced the memory gets replaced too, hence all data not on external SD will be lost.

What I was trying to say is: does the battery get charged, i.e. if you connect the AC adapter to your phone (which is turned off and has the battery inserted) do hear a sound and do you see the battery charging symbol? If not, how can you tell that the battery is charged at all? First of all you should make absolutely sure your battery is fully charged, for instance by putting it in an other phone.
Once you know the battery is fully charged the Jig might help. You should also try getting into download mode by using Volume Down + Home + Power button. But again: first make sure the battery is charged.

And i am repair man, so i focused on the repair tools, search it in amazon, in google, in yahoo,
There still the product you need forever only you can find.
Hey guys, last night something happened to my good old S2, i had problems about it's battery before so when it's battery suddenly dropped down from %20 to %0, i wasn't surprised. So i went and put it to charge (i don't use the original charger, i found a huawei charger and it gets the job done) and after a moment it showed that it is at %50 battery (like i said my battery has some problems), so i tried to turn on my phone. Then it went in a boot loop on the Samsung logo, i was going to turn off the phone so i can clear the cache partition so i unplugged the charger cable and it suddenly went dark, no power, no nothing. I tried to put it on charger again but it didn't help. I let it charge there overnight but it didn't help either. Then i borrowed my friend's S2 battery and it didn't work while my battery powered up his phone so i think problem is not on the battery. What do you think, is my phone bricked/fried? I had a photo archive in my usb storage(not in the SD storage) so i really wantt to recover it if its possible in anyway. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks..
Thats wierd , try with another charger and the original battery and let us know how it went.
PS:That phone is a though piece of hardware mine is still runing (of course after a lot of repairings and software changes) after 5 years , finally swtiched for lg g3 used from ebay , best deal ever

I tried another charger adapter (not original, my original charger is not working properly) with different cables and it didn't work. And for the battery, i have an original battery and it didn't work, then i used my friend's non-original battery and it didn't work either like i said before. But my messed up battery turned on his S2. So the problem is probably not on the battery.

No, pc doesn't indicate anything that my phone is connected nor the phone shows "charging" indicator.

Is there a way i can be sure it is a dead motherboard? And even if it's dead is there a chance i can recover my photos?

Hi there. I has a similar problem, the phone was working but even with the orginal charger plugged in was not charging at all (connection to PC didn't help either).
There is a procedure to "retrigger" a stuck charger IC.. I lost a link to it and I'm looking.
Had something to do like:
_ remove battery
_ plug phone to charger
_ insert battery
_ turn on
After that I'm not sure anymore.. maybe again "remove battery" step. After that put everything to rest, insert battery and then the charger and see if it works.
I'm googling, someone made a post on XDA with the full instructions.

Ok thanks please let me know if you find the full procedure and I'll try it
Hi, I found the procedue, it's exacly how I described the 4 steps above (the source it's on a external forum, I'm not sure if I can link it here - I'll send you a PM if you like).
SO, if the phone was stuck just like mine, working until the battery discharged even if plugged-in, that will solve it quickly (mine did precisely).
Otherwise.. there could be several reasons why the phone is not recognized anymore, some point out a faulty cap around the charging IC (if the phone is totally dead):

This cap, if faulty, is actively shorting "Vbat - Gnd" line thus prventing any operation of the phone. Could be water damage o defective charger. It depends how much you want to dig to repair your phone (there could be 1000s other reasons - this is the most HW one).
From what you described the problem in your post.. this defective Cap would/could explain many things.
How are your soldering skills? First thing I'll do is to open the phone and inspect, possibily with the help of a multimeter, next desolder the cap and power the phone back with a charged battery (don't connect the external charger, there might be burned pcb traces - but that's anohter story).

Sadly the first procedure didn't work. My soldering skills are not that good but i might know someone who can open up the phone and do things properly Do you know any detailed instructions for the second method you mentioned? Thanks..
I've no other details other that the picture. Before tearing the phone apart, you should try to test "continuity" beteween the "+" and "-" metal contacts of the battery holder. If you have a friends with a multimeter he will know how/what to look for (tell him about the short).
