A quick question regarding ROMs... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey guys
I am going to be getting the Note sometime here within the next 2-3 weeks. As soon as I get it, I plan on rooting and roming it up a bit, mainly for fluidity and battery life. Now one of the biggest draws to the note is the inclusion of the S Pen. My question is, will that functionality be removed switching between roms since the rom has a different "formula" than say an S3 or stock android rom? Or is it cooked directly into the device and able to work with almost any rom?
Thanks!

There are several touchwiz based roms that still include full pen support. Any AOSP/CM9/AOKP will not have full support. It will still act like a finger touch on those roms, but you won't have the home/back/menu/screenshot/smemo shortcut functionality.

As of right now, are there any stable (VERY fluid) Touchwiz 5 roms?

Even if you are on a non touchwiz based from the s pen still works you just lose s-memo and the double click functionality to open a note pad. The pen itself still works.

Look into Gubment Cheeze. Awesome running stable rom. You use the above mentioned apps with it and all is fine.

Which rom should I flash my note?

Hi. first of all I just want to say that I'm a big admirer of XDA forums I've been following the forums for quite some time on various phones but I'm not very active in posts / replies due to my inexperience.
I'm sick of AT&T taking forever to give us ICS and I'm not willing to wait just to get a whole bunch of bloatware and the same old touchwiz. I've come across two good roms: Onlyone and Objection. I'm kind of leaning towards Objection because It's giving me two UI options: Android 4 and the new Touchwiz, but from the replies I got the impression that Onlyone is more stable. Are there any ROMS that use the official ICS code released by Samsung or not yet?
Here are my main concerns: battery life, ROM stability and speed, and of course the good additions like updated touchwiz, S-voice, etc.
Try them all and see which you like best. Nobody can tell you which is best, because that is purely opinion based. There aren't that many, so just learn how to use titanium backup so switching between roms doesn't take too long.

I am a power-user who hates lag. The collective Mesosphere is for you... then install NovA Launcher and zoom zoom... your on your way. Don't bother with other ****ty roms, i've tried them.
Thanks for the replies. I'll definately utilize titanium backup and I'll look into The collective Mesosphere with nova and zoom zoom =)
Mesosphere is rocking it! GB has to get gone, you'll be glad it did. I haven't tried other rooms yet, admittedly. So far I don't have a need to.

Are you running the rom standard or have you enabled tablet mode? I just flashed it, need to put it through its paces.

If you prefer the unmodified, pure Android experience that you would get on a Nexus device, you can come close with a CyanogenMod based ROM. These are my personal favorites as they are practically bloat-free and don't have any carrier/manufacturer customizations. The downside on the Note is that there is no S-Note/S-Memo. Hopefully the CM devs will get these apps to work eventually, but the S-Pen does work.
If you like the TouchWiz interface then try one of the TW/ICS leak based ROMs such as OnlyOne. That was the first ICS ROM I tried and I liked it, but overall I prefer CM9.
you can try those ROMs from this guy - flappjaxxx. They are the unofficial CM9 ROM and UCLE2 stock-base ROM. They are really solid, stable, daily drivers and supported well by the awesome developer. These roms get very good comments from XDA-users.
I've tried every single rom.
for CM9- I'd use Mesosphere the rest were pretty unstable.
For Ucle2 + S-pen functionality i'd use FJ's Build. Onlyone was laggy for me.

This is like asking what beer should I drink or who is the best Golden Girl. Everyone is going to have different answers and you really need to try some and find your favorite.
That being said I am a big fan of flappjaxxx's UCLE2 rom.
My recommendation is to go with the Unofficial build of CM9 by h0tw1r3.
Nothing beats the cleanliness of AOSP, and the added features that Cyanogen throws in are well worth it.
I have been running it since he released the first build and it is extremely stable. And thanks to CalcProgrammer1, it was just updated and we may even see nightly builds.
Thanks Calc!

Addicted to flashing ROMS

I love our somewhat reliable/stable JB ROMS (thank you, XDA Devs!!) But losing stock Note functionality with S-Pen (double-tap for S-Memo, press and hold for screen capture, Photo Editor) always kept me running back to stock Touch Wiz. I was a flash-ahloic til something I did broke GPS and made it unusable. So I Odin-ed back to stock and still couldn't get GPS working. Eventually, I took my Note to the AT&T Device Support Center and they flashed the most current Samsung Firmware and I'm good to go. I've been Stock, non-rooted for 28 days, 11 hours and minutes LOL.
So I've resisted even rooting my Note at this point. Just been playing around with different launchers and widgets. It's still fun just customizing the Note to my liking. But I found that lags and freezing still even happen on Stock non-rooted, things I used to blame on any particular ROM I'd flashed.
Now the flash addiction is creeping up on me...

I, myself, have fallen in love with jellybam on the note. it has treated me quite nicely. no forcecloses. only one reboot but i dropped my phone so i think that was just from the battery popping out and in. other than that this rom is near perfect. its the best of all worlds. amazing battery life. hopefully we will be getting all those extra features soon when the official jb comes out.

Addiction is what I have, I downloaded everything I needed to root and flash a custom Rom before I received my note. The minute I received it, i rooted it and flash a custom rom. That's addiction.

Just an update:
So I ended up flashing Jellybam and what a joy that ROM was! So many customization options and it just ran smooth. That is until I got a Random Reboot.
So then I flashed Paranoidandroid, put on LMT and found that it didn't work as well as I'd hoped as a replacement for Swipe Pad. Anyway, I proceeded to customize it to make it my daily driver when RR strikes 4xs in an hour.
At this point, I go running back to ICS: Novena. I dig the boot animation and that ROM has always been solid for me. And of course everything performs flawlessly: no RRs and great battery life.
But am I content? LOL
Lurking in the Blackstar Dev thread, I read about the combination of X and Flappjaxx ICS 3.0.2 kernel.
Getting to the point of this post:
That combination is AMAZING! And not in the hyperbolic sense. TRULY AMAZING!
This feels as fast as any JB ROM I've tried. Tho I'm not OC/UV, I'm only using Wheatley and battery life is PHENOMENAL!
So I'm still enjoying my "OG" Note and glad that we have a sharing community in XDA forums and gifted dev support, but if we never get any new ROMS for the lack of a source JB kernel from Samsung, I'm now on my Daily Driver.
Holla back if this combo works for you too.

Sammy roms vs aosp speed

Hi guys just wondering is there any way to make pure Samsung roms as fast as aosp roms are such as cm 10.1 because even when I've frozen all the bloatware on any Sammy based rom it never seems to be anywhere near as fast or as smooth as a aosp rom, any ideas guys to get this kind of speed?

Well I certainly don't have lag opening apps, lag does appear after I've installed a few new apps or app updates but thats a rare and my recent apps menu is smooth.
The issue is not very related to the kernel, imho, because I tried dual booting with Siyah kernel between Sammy rom and CM10.1, and with CM rom I felt everything WAY more smooth, also in terms of free memory and multitasking:
I use Titanium very frequently, and with Samsung roms 90% of the time when I open it (even after a quick app switch) it has to reload the app list (because it was killed), while on CM10 it remains in memory much more, even with the same installed apps on both ROMs...
I disabled around 50 system apps in the samsung rom, still not enough to free the memory.
Yeah but I don't understand what is on cyanogen mod that makes it so much faster and what is on Samsung roms that is slowing them down so much?

please, me too.
also other thing i read people are doing is using another launcher, like nova launcher. for me changing the kernel did the difference, i use boeffla kernel now.
Samsung stock roms are bloated as hell whereas CyanogenMod is pure aosp with just basic android system and important components to run it smoothly. Also CM feels more smoother because of various system tweaks and performance optimizations by the awesome devs whereas the samsung roms don't even implement the very basic of Google's Project Butter.
I've used Omega rom and damn that was fast for a stock rom. It is tweaked very well, I suggest you try that out too. I use Omega and CM dual boot with Siyah kernel. Curretly i'm only running Cm10.1 coz Siyah kernel hasn't been updated to support dual booting of jb 4.2.2
Is there not a way to strip samsung roms down so they're as fast as cm by removing all the crap you're talking about?

Most roms like the Omega rom remove unecessary bloatware. But the basic issue lies within the touchwiz design itself. The sammy rom is entirely a resource hog and the system is basically bloated with unecessary crap.
The most you could do at a user level is to remove useless apps, disabling unused services and most of all NOT use Touchwiz.. Instead use something like Nova launcher which gives you a more stock feel and is relatively low on system resources.
Personally I'll mention that Omega rom is pretty smooth when it comes to overall system performance. But again its just a modified version of the crap sammy rom.
PS: If you hate the fact that normal system apps like the dialer and call log take way too long to load on ur sammy rom..Use exDialer and exContacts.. A very very good alternative to the native apps..Loads extremely fast and has waaay better UI than sammy.
My primary rom is CM 10.1 for obvious reasons. But I'll keep Sammy rom on dual boot until they fix the Camera issue with AOSP based roms..
I think I'm genuinely going to consider just switching to aosp because it's just pissing me off how much slower it is the only thing keeping me from switching is probably the battery life and the crappy camera you get on aosp roms.. But to me it doesn't look there's a way to fix the ****ty Samsung roms and I don't understsnd how they are getting away with shipping this crappy bloatwiz on probably the best phone out at the moment..

That would be CyanogenMod. That is by far the closest you will ever get to a Nexus device, but you will be giving up a bit of battery life, many of the SPen functions, and MultiWindow.
What you will be getting in return, is the beautiful stock look, being on the latest android version, and having a completely "Debloated" ROM.
Ok, I've heard a lot about cyan, but never gave it a shot. Where do I get it from and is it easy to install. Do I do it through tw recovery like any other Rom?

That's the link to the official nightlies for CM 10.1, installation instructions are in the OP of course. Yes you do use TWRP recovery and install it just like any touchwiz rom. Personally AOSP roms always end up getting buggy on my device, YMMV.
If I were you I would look into TW roms that can give you an AOSP look. I'll edit in some links.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274197 this is the novella Alliance rom that has an aosp theme option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207854 this is the miui rom and I believe with the miui theme engine you can an aosp look.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2154420 this is tweaked vzw remix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055170 this is cleanrom ace.

Normally I would say CyanogenMod or a Rom close to it. For this phone the S-pen is affected by the Rom you choose. A few of the Touchwiz Roms are pretty stable and the AOSP Roms removes most of the S-pen functionality. You should try a couple since everyone's experience is different. I'm running Beans Rom and it's pretty fast without changing any voltages.
I've used clean rom a few times and have always been happy. I usually use nova as well. I'm just liking for something that's fast, stable and doesn't have overwhelming options. Does any roms out there have the on screen keys like the nexus devices do?

Only AOSP roms do, and moonrom or minitab when in phablet/tablet modes.

I was hoping you guys could direct me. I'm looking for a Rom that is the fastest, cleanest room with the closest experience to a nexus device. What would you recommend?

For a good aosp rom, I would recommend a few of these.
1. ParanoidAndroid (my favorite)
2. AOKP
3. Cyanogen Mod (obvious good one)
4. LiquidSmooth
You will lose some nice tw features but there are some apps on the playstore that can give you similar spen features on aosp (don't want to post links as I don't own the rights). I myself would go for a tw ROM and just put nova launcher on there, but I love a great stock phone as much as the next guy. Hope I can help in some way but most Roms are just all opinion based. I would try around and post back your favorite.

De-TW ROM.

So long story short I came from a long line of HTC phones and one of the big things I miss about the ROMs is when the developers would take a stock OTA and debloat everything down to just the basic elements and throw a launcher on it. You would get all of the benefits of the OTA (better camera, better reception, etc) but still have the slimmed down fast OS. AI still have not seen that here. I was wondering if any dev would mind stripping a ROM down or if anyone just feels like I do?

Why not aosp or cm or any of the other source built roms? Seems like a waste to de touch wiz a rom when those are available. .

I just want the better camera and reception really.

I know what you're talking about. Its not quite the same, but you could take one of the already debloated ROMs and go through and remove as many system apps as possible before affecting stability and performance.

Just pick a nicely debloated ROM and then use a launcher like Holo HD. You can customize the heck out of it...you will never know TW is even there.
I found a really good debloat script for the Note 2. Worked like a dream. I took a debloat ROM and stripped it down even more. I love it. Here is the link for anyone else like me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932202

The reception is up to the radio which we can flash separately from any of the roms if we like. Camera I belive you could just pull the app from the new image of the update. Glad the script got you the right set up.

Not sure how exactly the note 2 is compared to the S3 that I had, but this isn't necessarily true. CM based roms have to reverse engineer the radio resulting in worse signal and data handoffs relative to touchwiz. As far as I know, there has never been a fully functioning touchwiz camera ported to CM. Correct me if I am wrong.
If you want better signal and camera, touchwiz is your only option. I've flashed dozens of CM based roms, and all have the similar data and csmera issues. Remember, your experience may vary, but this is all relative to touchwiz, which has the proprietary drivers.

I used a flashable zip. And I also came from a samsung galaxy s 3 and I assume that the camera and radios like you said are reverse engineered. I have a four month old baby so to me I need the camera or my wife will kill me
