Music lags and stutters frequently while "multitasking" - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my phone's music lags and stutters very frequently when I multitask. For example, if I am playing some music while I am downloading an app from the market or surfing the web, my music tends to start stuttering. It is quite annoying. I am guessing it is due to the lack of RAM but I am not 100% sure. Also, if I multitask, sometimes my entire phone starts to lag too. I have had this issue on Gingerbread, ICS and now Jellybean too. I think I may have had it on Froyo as well. Can anyone help me in solving this problem? Thanks.

What app? Which jb ROM ( just curious).
sent from my magic box to yours

I have tried a whole bunch of music players, but my fav is Google Play Music. I was on SlimBean, which was really good, but I cant handle the music lag issue. (Im almost certain that issue has been on every rom ive tried.) Im back to stock eclair now, and the music lag issue is gone. I think the music lag issue is not on google stock updates. But now on stock, the phone itself gets quite laggy. -.- I think Ive also had the music lag issue on GB and Froyo, but less. GB and Froyo were also a lot more laggy on the whole for me compared to ICS and JB. Any ideas about what I can do?

I usually get 150-200 Mb of free ram maybe because of this my phone never lags ......not even once btw I use google music along with beats audio ......I use only ics roms as these are better than froyo

I'd like to know how you get that. Tell me your settings please? And I have also gotten the music lag issue on ICS too. And I also usually use Google play music. I use an apk of course because I don't live in the states.

There are no setting actually I never use the apps which run in the background like google maps ...............I use iczen which has 380 mb of available ram and always use go taskmanager it uses very less ram and is very effective in clearing running apps ...........I usually have 10 apps installed in my phone .....other apps which I require I will do a backup of its apk and install it whenever required and after using I will remove it .....use apex launcher consumes less ram ......I always keep my data connection on and rest I will switch off including vibrations and keysounds.......... Whichever stock apps I dont use I will delete it off using titanium backup.......since we use ics on our old 512 mb ram vibrant these are must to experience no lag

Hmm I'm on jellybean and I have about 390 mb RAM but when I download on Google store the available ram is very low. I have to keep clearing my running apps. I did try go task manager but that thing takes up 30 mb of ram itself so I found it useless. Now I just use the manage apps in settings and I fc any running apps I don't need. I dunno if it'll help but I'm trying right now

go task manager uses 10 MB. On my phone that's all .........switch off all animations ...I have tried nearly 6 ics roms in all roms I get more than 150 MB available ram! !!!...btw I never use Google maps as I have sygic navigation .......Google maps all the time will be running in background..............u can also use ram booster looks awsome and even this consumes 15 MB of ram that's it ......here is the link .... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.rambooster&hl=en

I used to use that but it took up over 20 mb of RAM for me. GO Task manager used even more, at 30 MB for me lol. I just dont use any task managers. I go manually close apps when I hit Manage Apps > Running. FB is annoying because it takes up about 10 - 15, and you are correct, Google Maps takes up a lot of RAM (for me sometimes over 30 MB, tho normally is around 14 MB) Anyway, I like Google Maps so I just stick with it. Ive tried going into dev options and setting the min background process to 2, and kill when leaving the app, as well as kill app with back button. Im getting 180 MB now, but as soon as I use the browser with music or download apps with music (DL apps with music sucks up wayyy too much RAM and then my phone starts getting choppy), it starts to laaaaagggg. oh well. Funny, this never happened to me on stock lol. stock homescreen lagged like hell, but no lag anywhere else haha. stock is just ugly though, which is why im on JB.

among all the roms i have used remics ux and iczen uses least ram .......try these ics roms and u dont have any options other than that:laugh:

Is your music on an sd card or on the phone? it used to stutter a lot when I had it on the sd but when I moved it all to the phone it was perfectly fine.
just something that sounds like my issue before.

I was on ICSzen, however, i extremely disliked the new green theme. it was good on battery life, like SlimICS, but ICS roms all lagged, so Im on JB now. Also that Encryption Unsuccessful bug has made me wary of ICS. If I do get on ICS, I will not be able to get to JB (from what I've heard), so that is kind of an issue for me. I'm on SlimBean v2.1 right now with Semaphore v2.0.7sv, and my phone runs like the wind. RAM is better, thanks to the kernel and with SlimBean's BigMem configuration. The music lag issue is a bit better, although I haven't tried anything too crazy yet LOL. Gonna use for a while and see.

[Q] Laggy rom after freezing bloatware

Hi,
Has anyone else noticed this? When I freeze bloatware in Titanium Backup on a stock Sammy rom, my device begins te lag a lot more than usual. But when I leave all of the bloatware, it's way smoother, is this even possible?

U might have frozen them but the phone still tries to activate them through startup.
Download ES task manager and remove the start up of the bloat you froze and then reboot the phone.
What apps have you frozen?

You catch my drift, I guess. Just basic stuff I don't ever use. I've got the same effect when I just disable them in Applications manager.
Also, I flashed LL5 recently and I didn't disable anything at all, runs smoother now but I do notice some lags sometimes as I run out of ram.
Picture attached is with just th XDA app, mail and pocket open. When I press 'clear memory' it jumps to 692.

Added it now, XDA-app was acting funky.
Hmmmm I'd suggest downloading one of the de-bloat mods or using a custom rom such as WanamLite or Omega with bloatware removed or Foxhound Essentials (Skinny rom) or Hyperlight. Any rom can be stripped of fat but some do it easier. Hyperlight is only 230mb in size where as most roms are around 800mb although I found this version of hyperlight to be a bit laggy at times. I used to find WanamLite laggy at times but this current version (in my sig) and without all the crapsung apps runs so smooth. .
If you want to squeeze in a bit more ram, use Perseus kernel which raises the limit to 856mb of ram compared to your 832. Don't worry if you get to down to around 120mb free, just means apps you use are in ram. If you see apps you never use being cached in ram then use an app like Autostarts to disable them from loading at boot or just freeze them totally

No offence to the hard working developers and all, but I've tried about 2 dozen of 3rd party roms / custom roms so far and yet, I haven't seen any rom that doesn't lag at all and I always keep getting back to stock Sammy rom.
Right now I'm on stock 4.1.2 with stock everything and no apps disabled or whatsoever and it runs like a motherf*cking train.
Okay, ram usage is at ~100-150 MBs free, but seems to be waaaay smoother than stock rom with disabled apps or debloated. Don't know why though.
Anyways, thanks for your help and for the replies!

[Q] Galaxy player 4.0 randomly has crash and reboots after heavy usage.

The way my GP 4.0 works is odd...It's as if after every reboot, the player has a certain amount of fuel (and no I'm not referring to the battery). After usage, that fuel gets burned down and the player starts running sluggishly and eventually either freezes up and forces me to do a forced shut down or it reboots itself. I usually can't keep the thing on without a reboot for longer than 3 days. It's not a major issue, but it makes playing games rough because sometimes in the middle of a game, the player just freezes up and reboots. The battery typically never goes beyond 100 degrees F, unless I'm in a hot car or something.
Anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions? I've heard of something called Lagfix that does something like trimming or something of the sort...Yeah, noob here. Would that fix me up? Running gingerbread 2.3.5 stock rom and kernel.

I have a lot installed. Not many are running in the background...I mean I froze the maps app so that it can't run. I have lookout, a CPU status widget, yahoo mail, textplus, adwlauncher, rootdim, and my battery indicator. That is, according to the running services in the settings. Any ideas?

Well according to the running services tab in the settings, it's lookout and adwlauncher. I had the problem before adelauncher though....Is my device just faulty? :/
try a factory reset and dont install anything after.
if it doesnt seem to hang, reinstall your apps slowly, one by one to see which one is causing the problem
Your player is using to much ram so it's going to restart. Use the task manager to kill any app you aren't using.

2 problems with that. 1. in the task manager, no tasks are seen running. I almost always have around 70 mb of ram free no matter what. 2. if I use a task killer (such as advanced task killer), I can kill apps that are running (such as the ebay app...Not sure why that even runs in background), but they come back on within seconds....do I just need to uninstall apps?
I will suggest you try using advance task manager to monitor your applications, rather then the system's task manager.

But when I kill a task in advanced task killer to kill unwanted running apps, they come back on after like 5 seconds. However, these are apps that I'd like to have installed, such as ebay, weather, and youtube. Do you suggest just uninstalling as many as possible?
I would do a complete reset and then slowly install your apps. This way u can see what is causing the problem.
And don't install unecassary apps

Are you using a custom rom? You shouldn't have 70mb all the time. You should have at least 162mb when it just starts booting up, and then 100mb- 120mb when using it. ADW Launcher is kinda heavy on memory. Try Holo Launcher or one that doesn't use a ton of ram. I remember on mine it was Go Launcher using too much ram, and it was causing it to stutter. Also I suggest uninstall (or just doing a complete restore) some of the apps. Our players suck with managing ram imo lol.

Stock rom and stock kernel. Would custom ones be better?
I do get the around 160 mb of ram when booting up. Actually, I do have around 90 mb of ram available after the boot up. Well, the thing is, is that adwlauncher has almost made it all better. It just runs so much smoother than touchwiz and i like it a lot. However, I can try another I suppose. Well that sucks. Should I start using a task killer and having it auto kill or something? I mean I don't really wanna uninstall youtube, or ebay, but I guess I could uninstall some other stuff.
Okay, so last night I uninstalled some apps that according to advanced task killer were running in the background. I've also uninstalled Lookout just to free up some more ram. now I get about 90-100 mb of ram when idle, and things are working all right for now. I'll report how it performs after a day or two...It's just a shame that the galaxy player has so little ram that I'm forced to uninstall some apps that won't even give me the option to stop them from running the background.

Custom Kernels, and roms help the player a lot imo. I would at least flash a custom kernel, because it boots the total ram from 342 to 352mb. Yeah I think that since you have a lot of apps installed it is bogging down the player. Uninstall the apps you don't need, or rarely use. I know I wished samsung would have properly upgraded our players. Instead we got the 3.6, and 4.2 which do some things better, but other things worse. They made the 5.8 but to me it's not worth the money.

Okay so unfortunately, I just got another crash/reboot. I was playing Draw something with my sister when suddenly it began to hang for about 4 seconds and then just reboot. This is the normal crash I used to get, and always get after about 3 days of having the thing on and using it. I had plenty of open ram when this happened. before I opened draw something, I had about 100 mb of ram.
Uninstalling apps has cut down on the amount of lag and hangs I get, but I still get this stupid reboot deal after a while...Is there any way to make this stop? I mean I could just do a factory reset, but I almost don't even think it's worth having to redo everything just to fix rebooting once every 2 or 3 days.

If your galaxy player is rooted I would try installing a custom kernel and see what happens. Because 1) It gives you the ability to overclock to 1.2 ghz (If you buy tegrak or set cpu you can overclock to 1.3 or even 1.5ghz). This helps with lag and memory issues from my experience, and 2) You can make a backup of your files on your device using ClockWorkMod, so you don't have to redo everything if factory resetting doesn't work.
But most likely I think you are going to have to just do a factory reset. Usually that fixes the memory problem since it resets everything on the player. But be warned flashing kernels and roms does void your warranty and can mess up your player if not done right. However, there's tons of tutorials on how to do it. If you like it stock, , iJimaniac has made a custom rom called R.E.D.D it uses the stock kernel with a modified version of the stock rom.
Also do you mind taking a screenshot or picture of your taskmanger and apps?

It is indeed rooted. However, can't I already overclock to 1.2 ghz? I mean I have tegrak and it lets me overclock to that already. I don't even mind the CPU speed now, it's just the random reboots I get that bother me. And if it needs to be said, I really cannot remember if my player has always done this...
So unless flashing a kernel or rom is actually gonna make my player run smoother (I've heard that stock stuff runs smoothest because it's made for that specific device), I don't really see a need to do it. I'm perfectly fine with the way it is stock...Just not fine with the occasional bits of lag I get (temple run is basically not playable on my player, because even the slightest hang will screw you up) and the stupid reboots.
Sure. You want a screenshot of advanced task killer open (showing all the apps that are currently running)? As for apps, how do you want me to get a picture of all those? It'd take several pictures because I'd have to scroll through the apps list and take multiple pictures.

Galaxy S3-Hopeless multitasking?

I did use the search function. There was a similar thread posted a day ago but I'd like to do a more in-depth query here. The more extensive one has been dormant since April so I figure that I might as well open a new one.
I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I want to do a serious investigation of the multitasking woes in the S3.
Just some background of my experiences:
Having flashed the latest official (ending with MF6), I must say that multitasking is just atrocious and my apps close for every 3rd one I open. RAM is always full, and once cleared it is bogged down again. And again. And again. The iPhone 4, with 512 MB RAM, can manage better than this. The RAM heavy ones (Facebook, Chrome, YT, etc.) are the worst of all-as they close down even when you don't touch the phone for a period of time.
What exactly is using up my RAM? Please don't come back to me with the Free RAM=Wasted RAM argument. I have seen no speed improvement of apps "cached in memory" compared to those that I just opened up.
I remembered back in the days of the S2 release people called 1 GB RAM unnecessary, and to an extent this is true, as the S2 was able to do some serious multitasking of 8-9+ apps without having to close any of them. Other flagships (HTC Sensation) did fine with 768 MB RAM. Heck, the Galaxy S1 seemed fine with 512 MB RAM. The OS can run, camera works fine, I can play videos fine. So where exactly did this 512 MB of extra RAM go, when the Galaxy S3 is upped to 1 GB of RAM?
I have tried zRAM 300 MB, 400 MB, 600 MB. They all make the phone remarkably slow. Initially it does prove to be somewhat useful, but over time multitasking becomes completely hopeless again.
Is there ever going to be a solution to this, or do I really have to get a 2 GB RAM phone to actually be able to use it?
Well, mate, this has been discussed over and over as you may be aware. Honestly, i've lost hope for stock firmwares on multitasking. Some people swear by zram or even swap and while it does work i didn't find the results very good. Someone may come up with a more thorough explanation on how all the ram is being actually used (and it has been written already, i've seen it around) but at this point i just don't really care much.
Bottomline, you have 3 options:
- install some aosp rom and never see this problem again (some others may come up due to lack of sources for exynos)
- compromising speed for multitasking purposes with zram, swap and there were some atempts at plain better multitask management with supercharger and others
- ignore and live with it and try to change your phone for anything else asap - samsung botched this and is making no effort i can see for a fix. If they don't care about you it's only fair you don't care about them either.
I'm aiming for a nexus4 when i find one cheap around. Plenty of power, 2Gb, fastest updates in the business. Should come down in price even more when any new phones hit the market.
This is a really big issue with this phone.
First of all, don't compare it to the iphone, cause the iphone doesn't actually multitask as it freezes apps in the background.
Start downloading something with safari and open another app in iphone. Then the download stops until you switch back to safari.
iOs multitasking philosophie is completely different to android.
Now, having paid 600euros and being unable to multitask is really frustrating. I've tried several things like different roms, external swap, internal swap, zram blah blah.
The truth is that although the stock touchwiz roms offer stuff like multi-window, they are really REALLY laggy in my opinion. I once decided to flash a cm10.1 (aosp) based rom. I haven't regretted since. I felt as if i had a completely new phone. I suggest you try such a rom. you wont regret it.
Also, there are some apps that allow you to freeze background processes. I use Rom Toolbox pro for example and i have frozen many background apps so I've reduced the amount of ram being used. Search on xda, there is a thread about which backgroung services are safe to be frozen.
Also, use greenify. Greenify stops apps from running in the background when you dont need them. Maps for example keep running in the background consuming 20mb for no reason. Greenify such apps so that they consume your ram only when you need them to do so.
Plus, change your LMK settings. The Low Memory Killer is an android service that kills apps when the amount of ram falls beneath a limit. Use an app such as Rom Toolbox to lower your limits so that apps don't get closed so often.
Finally, try zram with the appropriate settings. I use Googy-Max kernel which has bult-in zram support. I use 600mb of zram with 80% swappiness.
Having these things altered i can run at least 5 apps simultaneously without any problems. For example i run facebook and messenger along with whatsapp and skype. When i open the browser to search for something, none of the other apps gets closed.
Ofcourse if you try to run many apps, you may experience app-closing or lags. But remember, the key, is to close apps that you dont need.
Also, if your phone feels laggy just reboot it. For the next 24 hours you ll be fine without any lags.
Hopeless multitasking continues even on CM11 4.4.4. I don't understand what the reason for bad multitasking. When I switch from Dolphin browser to any other app and come just after 5 seconds I find it killed. Even I can't upload a photo to a browser. While I am selecting the, browser page was shut down.

I noticed that my RAZR XT910 had become very slow after some time. I am using the UK jellybean firmware. Recently I had a problem that was only resolved after reflashing the phone. After the flash i noticed how smooth the phone was again. Installed many of my apps again (Nova Launcher / Widget Locker / Beautiful & HD Widgets and a ton other). The phone is still smooth and usable at the moment. I have not yet rerooted the phone, but will get to that very soon. My fear is the phone will probably start becoming slow again over time. What should i do? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Oh, and clearing cache also never sped the phone up again.. Just wish it would stay smooth like it is now.

For running it smoothly you need more RAM free for tasks. So, if you open a Browser, then PlayStore and Music App your phone will tend to get slower (Sadly, Droid Razr only has 1GB unlike few other new phones). Also, putting many apps on your phone that remain open in background unnecessarily does not help (Some Apps use your phone even when you havent even opened them).
You can use the "Advanced Task Manager" or other task managers to monitor, how much RAM is being used, which tasks/Apps are using it and probably uninstall some of the garbage Apps. Also, you can kill the processes to free up RAM space, that will make your phone instantly fast, in case it tends to slow down.
I used the Cache clearing from Boot Menu, it did not help me out as well. So I finally had to put this task manager and use it to control my Apps whenever my phone slows down.
I noticed a little lag on the 4.2 kernel but it seems to be running smoother on the 4.3. I am using cyanogen mod 10.2 but just remember to flash the correct gapps if you go this route.

Hi!
I met the same problem too. The interface was very slowly.
My solution was to increase more space on internal memory. I was almost full because I downloaded offline map files - a lot of small files in complicated folder hyerarhy (2 Gb).
Flash memory like SSD-disk needs free space for quick work.
I deleted offline files and reboot and miracle! My phone XT910 became as young dummy phone even on stock 4.0.4.
After that I started playing with custom firmware and now I am on 4.3.1 SlimBean and it is more smoothy and more free RAM without moto-soft.

Stock 5.0.1: Looks like we got the well-known massive memory leak :/

I've noticed that Chrome dies every few minutes, (sometimes it can go 30+ minutes depending on what I'm doing.) Just yesterday when I was on KK, Chrome NEVER lost the tabs, even when I had 20+ of them.
I tend to stream talk radio/pod casts from websites, and up until now, it hasn't been a problem. This is actually a really big problem in the base Lollipop code. Is anyone else noticing this?

I've rebooted my phone several times today, yet I'm at 1.2GB+ system usage, and 850MB+ app usage. I can't compare this to KK directly because I never once cared to check those metrics. This is making the phone quite unusable. I'm using the odexed stock ROM. This is fairly disappointing.
What android version is the LG update? Was the memory leak fixed in 5.0.2? Cuz I'm running bliss ROM, which I believe is 5.0.2, and don't seem to have memory leak issues.
Haven't noticed anything like what you're describing, but battery life is taking a major hit on 5.0.1. Eight hours at work on KK and the battery still had around ninety percent. The same thing on Lollipop and it's around sixty percent. This is just sitting in my pocket for all but 15 minutes or so during lunch.

From what I understand the bug persists in 5.0.2 but the ROM developer might have made some tweaks to mitigate the problem. Stock/OEM versions of 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 have this issue. My brother with a Sprint S5 is having the same problem. After a few hours of runtime, then you'll notice the home screen redrawing when you hit home... you'll notice your tabs in Chrome re-drawing as well. If you were streaming something like audio or video, then it dies in the background. People are also complaining that this happens with Google Music, and things of that nature. I haven't played around enough to see what all will close.
With bumped stock ROM, I never once had Chrome close in the background. At this point, I'm having a hard time seeing the benefits of LP over KK. A few fun things like unlock w/ BT connection, but what else? I see that framerate improved by about 20%, but didn't eliminate stutter completely from this phone. That's likely never going to be fixed, as it's a result of the 2K screen.
I also find it bizarre that I can CAUSE Chrome to die on-demand. If I'm listening to this particular podcast, and Chrome is the only app running in the background, then I go to Setttings > Apps > Running, within 5 seconds, the audio stops. Chrome dies. I see the System RAM usage drop from 1.5GB to 1.0GB. App usage stays around 800MB.
Rebooting the phone seems to help a bit, but it comes right back after I go through a few apps in normal use. On KK, I almost NEVER swiped away apps, or closed Chrome tabs. I only did that if I had clutter and I wanted things to be more neatly organized in the recent apps dialog.
Can anyone else try loading up a podcast like thebiggestproblemintheuniverse.com in Chrome/Chrome Beta, then using their phone like normal with this all in the background for a bit. Try going to Running apps and see if it kills/freezes the Chrome process.

So I went ahead and tried the above on my non-rooted / stock KK and as soon as I went into the Apps settings Chrome stopped playing the podcast and closed. I tried this multiple time and it happened each time. FYI - Am on Chrome V.40.0.2214.109.

I'm rooted, L odexed, and on the latest Chrome beta and can confirm this happened exactly as you described. Within 2-3 seconds of going to running apps, the podcast died. When I opened chrome again, it came back to that web page but had to reload it.
Forgive me if I am entirely off base here as I am not a dev,
It was noted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-watch/development/android-5-0-lollipop-memory-leak-fix-lg-t3030871
that the LG G watch suffered from the same thing, and from this git hub: https://github.com/temasek/android_...services/core/java/com/android/server/display
The dev made a patched services.jar, could this point in the right direction
To be fair, I never tried to go to the 'Running' apps while streaming on KK, because I never had a problem with the podcast stopping. It's possible that Android 'cheats' by clearing up RAM when you visit this page to make things look more efficient. That's actually kinda shady.
