Help a noob - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm new with the galaxy s2 I had a Xperia play and it was more simple but with this device I had some questions so if you can help me I will appreciate that
I had my games sd data in my external sd card but I don't want to move all the files to the phone to play them, so how I access the game with the sd data in the external sd card?
What does lpm and lpg means?
How do I flash a new Rom and kernel? Only with cwm right?
I'm from Costa Rica if I use a Rom that uses another apn settings how can I use the mobile data of my country?
I have a backup with titanium backup of all the apps that I had on my xplay is there a way of restore all those apps to this new phone?
What is the function of the flash counter? What would happen if it gets very high number?
Thanks for your support

well i dunno the answers to all the questions..but here they go..
flashing ron and kernel can be done through cwm..i find it the easiest way..another way is using odin
flash counter will only be increased if u use odin..it is not affected by CWM
LPG,lpm etc. are just different samsung stock rom versions like xwlp7,xwlpd etc.
u can easily choose your apn settings as they were in the rom u have installed...i have had no problems with apn settings in samsung based custom roms..dunno about the aosp/aokp roms..However, if u a flash a rom without wipe..your settings should be as it is..the only difference you could have is that your modem might change and you might get low speeds with 2g/3g etc.. But in that case, you can flash your original modem version
about titanium backup..just copy the files in the titanium bakup folder and restore them..But i am not so sure whether it will work for different devices..you can easily find it out by doing a google search

Thanks

Yes, you can. The APN settings are retrieved from your SIM, if not, you can ask them from your carrier.

The flash counter was introduced by Samsung in this device to monitor whether you had rooted your device or not, and whether you had flashed stuff or not. You already should know rooting voids the warranty of your device, each time you flash (except for flashing a stock Samsung ROM), via Odin only though, your flash counter is raised by one. There is no limit up to which it goes. This is how Samsung monitors it. However, since they say nothing is impossible, there IS a way to reset that counter, and a simple app called Triangle Away has been developed by Chainfire to reset it, along with removing the yellow triangle that comes up while booting the phone after flashing anything via Odin.

You could root your phone and use titanium backup to back up your apps. You can root and unroot using gingerbreak. After the factory restore, you can re-download Titanium from the market and restore your apps from the backup you made previously(I am not sure what limitations are placed on the free version of Titanium)
If you are worried about a factory reset wiping out your microsd, take it out of your phone. While you have it out, it is not a bad idea to copy the info on your microsd to a computer or dropbox. Microsd cards fail.
Of course, if you have your phone rooted you could install a custom ROM. A custom ROM would be unlikely to have the same problem that you are experiencing now. The custom ROM would have different problems!
PS You could also make a recovery file of your current setup before you did a factory reset or flashed a recovery application. Think of it as an image backup. It restores both your phones operating system and programs to where they were when you created it. Of course, if you used the recovery, you would have your phone as it is now. A phone that will not connect to the university's network.

[Q] APN Backup/Restore on ICS

Why does every new android release have to take away freedom and feel less and less 'open'?
In any case, I just flashed the experimental CM9 and I was greeted with an inability to restore my APNs from my usual app (APN Backup & Restore from Ritesh Sahu) because apps are no longer allowed to modify APN files on 4.0.
I would like to know what the simplest way to backup and restore my APNs is in this situation. Is there some simple way to create a flashable ZIP or something similar to restore them with?
I usually don't backup and restore my APNs just hit reset to default and they are restored ....... i believe you've tried that if not give it a shot
Yeah I've tried that, I need to backup and restore because I'm on a relatively small Canadian carrier (sasktel).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
If you have a Nandroid backup you could restore that, then write down your APN and save it some where.

Exactly Aaron. Why people don't write these things down before they go messing around with things is beyond me

Well I have only one APN in the settings and I did copy it, works fine and gets data. But when I back up using that app it says it backs up 2000 something APNs and my carrier on my phone actually shows up upon restore, unlike now when it's just 6 digits.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I would also like to restore my APN's instead of always typing them in when changing Roms.
How can I create a script, overwrite a sys-file or elselike to prevent me from reytyping apn's, when they aren't implemtented in let's say a custom rom ?
me too any ideas please

You can use HiApn on market to restore your apn that you backed up from another rom.
However for it to work on ICS you need to make it a system app. You can do so in TiBu options.
Works for me no problem.
The app can also set some automatic ones based on your carrier which worked for me but looked a little different than the ones on my other phones.

A simple App to backup and restore APNs (Settings to connect to the internet with the mobile connection). The backup is stored in the /sdcard/APNBackupRestore folder.
NOTE: Starting with Android 4.0/ICS, 3rd Party apps don't have access to write APN settings, hence this app no longer works for restoring APN backups. Some users have reported that it can be used on ICS if its set to run as a System app (using Titanium for example)

Device Status: Modified

Hi guys, need a bit of help.
I have rooted my phone previously but did not like it so I flashed the stock rom with Odin. This left my device status as modified. Since it is modified I cannot get software updates.
Recently, I had to flash jellybean for my phone as it would not update ota or through kies. Now when pressing check for update in settings, it sais "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available".
Is there anyway to change the device status back to normal without wiping data? If not, how can I backup all my data so it can be restored? Samsung kies crashes when trying to backup apps and I'm not sure if mobile go backs up app data.
I am using the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S3, if that helps.
Thanks in advance

Root again, and run triangle away, then flash stock again via Odin and wipe data from recovery.
This removes all evidence of root and you will be completely stock with a binary counter of 0.

Update by flashing any stock rom or custom rom .

Dude, i dont know if sdk is a good/easy option. But try Nandroid Backup on play store.
But the problem is that all these apps from the play store that backup your device require root and I want my phone unrooted after restoring it. Those apps do require root to restore data right? If not then I am willing to use them.

i've used very simple method.
1) connect usb to pc - then select internal memory copy to sd card.
2) for some data will not show any items if connect via usb.But you still can move via file manager such as "solid explorer".Just select file and copy to sd card.It might take a little bit longer.
..i'm already done more than 20 times chg status modified to normal.Just ensure you use proper step as adviced by Xda senior..

I have now found Holo Backup (Simple ADB Backup) to backup my phone without any rooting or complicated stuff. I wanna know that if I backup my device with its device status modified, will it still show modified when I restore it?
Also has anyone with an S3 successfully backed up and restored their phone using holo backup and if so what was the size of backup file. When I tried mine it came up with a file slightly over 1gb which doesn't seem right seeing as I have about 10gb internal data and 10gb of data on my micro sd.

Use Framaroot to root your phone (!!with SuperSU!!) after reflasing, use Titanium Backup to restore the apps and systemapp-data....
After you did it, go to SuperSU, go to settings and tap on Unroot.... Your device state will be NORMAL after that!

Don't understand your question.
If you are asking if you can have another custom rom besides your stock, yes you can via dual boot in siyah kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Bit confusing, your question....but here goes......you can keep as many Roms as you like on you internal/external sd card, but you can only have one at a time as a working system....(you can dual boot 2 systems with siyah kernel, but I advise you to stay away until you are far more experienced)
If you want to change Roms,a format system/data in generally recommended for a clean install. You can back up all your apps and data with Titanium, but I advise against restoring system data in general.
I do however use titanium to restore messages and call logs using the .xml method.
