Do you guys know anything about fast dormancy. Is it good or bad about it?
it depends on your network, if your network support it and if you keep it enabled then its good. any other scenario might cause battery drain. install fast dormancy toggle app from market to check whether it is enabled or disabled

Hi all
Not a power user's dilemma I'm afraid but I hope someone can help me out...
What's bugging me is that my wife's LG-P500 incurs a small charge every day because, despite all the settings telling me it should NOT connect to the internet via the mobile network at any time, it somehow still connects - even when wifi is available like at home.
This wouldn't be a big deal normally but because she's on a pre-pay txt only plan her credit gets used up quickly.
My HTC Wildfire uses NO mobile connection at all when I have wifi available. Any ideas why this should be happening with our LG-P500?
Great forums by the way and I'm slightly embarrassed to be raising this probably noob topic here but I can't find an answer anywhere else...
Thanks in advance!
I haven't seen that problem on my P500, with the void echo ROM (the stock firmware didn't stay on the phone long enough for me to try that).
The option to disable it is in:
Settings -> Wireless and network settings -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled (should be unchecked)
Or in the drop-down menu of the notification bar.
I'm not sure about the stock ROM, but on void, an additional icon appears on the notification bar whenever the mobile network is active.
You could also try disabling the option:
Settings -> Accounts & sync settings -> Background data (should be unchecked)
Thanks. I already did all the obvious stuff you mention, having seen it work fine on my Wildfire... Any other ideas out there?
Might this be related to Location Services using Cell tower information ?
Could try turning that off anyway.
If you don't want to use the mobile network for internet access, than go to Settings > Wireless & network settings > Mobile networks > Uncheck Data enabled .
If the network allows you, you can also select Network mode > GSM only, this will also save you some battery. For example, I only use wifi to connect to Internet on my phone, and I also checked the option "Use only 2G networks" (also saves battery), I'm connecting to my operator only for phone calls
What is your Wi-Fi sleep policy settings? Try setting it to Never.
When the phone goes into sleep mode, wifi is turned off to save on battery. May be that's the reason mobile network is getting connected in sleep mode. If u enable wifi policy to never sleep that will drain the battery. You can disable the mobile network from th3 notification bar that should help.
Many thanks for the help guys!
Wifi sleep: good idea, I'll look at that!
Location services: good idea, I'll look at that!
Data enabled: unchecked already.
The problem still strikes me as odd because although I have ALL the same apps (and quite a few more...), I don't have this problem with my little HTC Wildfire...
Update: the only way I could find to resove the issue was to invent and use a nonsense APN...
Wifi sleep was already ticked as "never" by the way.
Thanks again everyone who gave advice.
Yeah, I've also had reason to use an APN named "fake" with a proxy named 'fake", although i use "Z" now to save typing, LOL.
This is one of many things i would do when changing SIMs. I have had one SIM and phone that always set a new APN and this ended up costing me a few bucks in data fees before I re-changed the APN info.
I would also disable the data services, make sure WiFi was on (to provide priority data access) AND enable airplane mode.
Anyway, your experience has inspired me to check more deeply about my data usage. I don't like the idea of my phone doing data without my knowledge while it's in standy.
I prefer to manually choose which connection I would like to use, so if I'm using my data plan such as when I'm out, I go to notification and enable data. I only get 200mb a month so its easier for me than to always keep networks on even when I'm not using them. It also saves on the battery as well.
EDIT: you can check your data usage using 3g watchdog app, find it in android market
It easy to solve. Just install APNdroid
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.code.apndroid
It also has a widget. Works very well.
I decided to try a speed test using my 3g connection.
My upload speed is faster than my download speed, it's double the speed.
Why is this happening?
Anyone had similar results when running a speed test?
Make sure H+ is enabled. Enable Fast Dormancy if you have disabled it.
Regards.

Fast dormancy is enabled, how do I enable H+?
Try inputting this in keypad,

Regards.
Thanks, still the same result.
Upload speed much faster than download speed, it's fine through wifi though.
edit: I've solved the problem by changing the apn. Now downloads much faster than upload
I'm trying monitor fast dormancy(FD). I'm testing it on my Samsung Galaxy s2. I had rooted my phone and installed samsung kernel back.(Android 2.3.4-kernel 2.6.35.7-Carrier:AT&T)
First doubt is, after monitoring the tcp packets, and logcat, there is no sign of FD getting activated (Although i have added entries in nwk_info.db for my carrier, also build.prop doesn't have any entries related to FD). So i think this kernel doesnt support it although my network does. Is there a way to invoke FD in my current OS? Are there any particular custom ROMs tat might support FD (AT&T carrier)?
Second doubt is tat we created a simple app to send and receive(client, server) a single udp packet(full internet access permission given). It works on the emulator(eclipse), but on the phone its working only with wifi, doesn't work with my 4g/3g data connection when wifi is turned off. Is there a fix for this issue?!
Thanks in advance.

1) Where is the confirmation that AT&T supports FD? Everywhere I have ever looked on this subject I've seen conflicting information.
2) FD changes would be in the RIL and modem, not the kernel - don't confuse the svnet-dormancy wakelock with radio fast dormancy. The svnet-dormancy wakelock is just Samsung being lazy and inhibiting CPU suspend for a fixed amount of time after doing anything with the radio rather than determining when it's safe to suspend and destroying the wakelock immediately. (In general, wake_lock_timeouts that ALWAYs expire are a sign of bad coding.) I'm fairly certain it's disabled by default in the stock I777 firmware. (There's a "secret code" in the dialer that you can use to see what it is set to - however last time I tried changing it, it did nothing, and I forget what the code was.)
3) How are you monitoring FD behavior?
4) As to the UDP issue, have you confirmed that it isn't just AT&T's NAT implementation blackholing something? What happens if you run the same app on a wifi device that is tethered to the GS2?
How do i give proxy authentication details when i connect to a wifi network?

Hello,
Sorry, but I don't know how to answer your first question regarding the proxy authentication, but regarding the battery usage... which version on the ROM are you using? Have you already done the update?
My 920 used batteries REALLY fast until I flashed the portico updated rom using Nokia Care Suite.
Now, the battery life is quite good. It isn't fantastic, but it is certainly good enough for my purposes.
For proxy settings, go to wi-fi settings and tap on your wifi connection. It will bring up another screen where you can turn on and configure proxy.
As for battery, if you have already disabled background tasks, check your cell signal strength. Battery runs out fast when you are in a weak signal spot.
So I've seen a few posts about slow wifi on the G5 here on XDA but can't remember there was any solutions really.
Has there been any progress regarding to this?
Seems like my wifi suddenly drops from time to time (like every 2-3min or something), the "wifi bar" doesn't drop for even a second though so I guess it stays connected but isn't able to pull/send requests.
Getting quite annoyed with this since it's faster with my 4G network on than 100mbit wifi.
Also, might be a coincidence but overall I feel like my wifi got slower when I got the G5, on my Macbooks etc that is. Could of course be some router issues but not likely.
Any ideas? Kinda bummed out since I love the phone.
Might be a ip6 issue it is on my g4 use an app called disable ipv6 and it helps. Dont know if g5 suffers from the incompatability either
I would replace the phone. I get no wifi drop out and wifi is blazing fast when my internet connection at work and home isn't playing up.
If you can, disable IPv6 on your router, or if you have the European Varient and have root, there is a script to disable it on your device. I had the same issue and that was the trick. Get an app to test for an ipv6 leak before-hand, just to be sure.

ALSO, If you head into your developer settings, you can enable "Legacy DCHP" I have found this useful on a number of devices that were having issues with WiFi.
