Hey guys,
Got a weird problem that just cropped up and need help. I was trying out a new email app - Moxier Mail yesterday and it completely hosed my contacts/People stock app. I've deleted Moxier, and cleared data from my People app and let it resync, but for the vast majority of my contacts, the 'Edit Contact' button from the menu is now gone.
The only options showing from the menu are:
-Link
-Set Speed Dial
-Save to SIM
-Print
-Set default action
-Edit tabs
I've cleared data on the Contacts, on Facebook for HTC sense, on Touchdown contacts, even cleared Dalvik, etc and nothing is working to bring the 'edit' back.
What can i do?

It seems like I have to manually sync both gmail and calendars. Is any one else experiencing this?
Running latest update with launcher pro and rooted
i had the same problem, but dont quite remember solution, had to enable background data, and clear the cache on the gmail, thats all i can remember for now
i had this issue, when i accidentally disabled sync in the power control widget, then removed the widget. added the widget back, turned sync back on, removed the widget again.
I'll give that a shot.

Thanks so much! I was going through the exact same problem and going crazy!! Then I read your post and realized I played with (and uninstalled) SuperPower control widget yesterday also ... same deal, I guess I messed with the settings and somehow disabled syncing .. I now re-installed, turned syncing back on and removed program.. whew!!
I use the default android widget and turn on the sync option(the one with two arrow), it works for me.
Try it again by sending a email to yourself. See if it syncs
How do you clear the cache on Gmail? I have a bug where it still shows a mail count and deleting the message doesn't delete from my account so I have to use the web interface to actually delete messages. Hoping this would help?!

I've been racking my mind for 4 days now! Thanks sooo much for jogging my memory!
Hey Everyone,
I'm having the same issue with Gmail not syncing properly.
w/ Bell Mobility, rooted
The syncing icon is persistent in the status bar and nothing is happening. In the gmail app itself I will get proper unread message counts but the messages will not display. I have had to change my google password twice because it's getting "suspicious activity". I'm assuming this is being caused by the app. Everything was working fine up until a couple days ago.
I've tried clearing the cache and it will load it fine, once. After that same issue. I'm going to try clearing the cache and reinstalling the app to see if that makes a difference.
I've also tried disabling/enabled auto-sync and it hasn't made a difference either.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
UPDATE:
-- removed gmail updates from the market **No change**
-- it's still retrieving new e-mails but the sync icon in the status bar stays the same.. I have no idea what's going on now.
Hey! I have a rooted Thunderbolt (Das BAMF Remix 1.6.3, using Imo's 2.7.0 leanKernel), but I have the LauncherPro app and I have my dock display my calls, messages, GMail, as well as a shortcut to the browser.
When I installed this about three weeks ago, my SMS notifications used to work (when I get a notification, a little red notification bubble came up next to my message icon, which was customized, and so are the rest of my dock icons), and then it stopped working - once I installed SMS Go, it started to work again for a bit, and then stopped.
So for two weeks I sort of just accepted that, and then for some odd reason my GMail notifications stopped working... I would get e-mail, and it would say "Inbox (1)" when I click on the GMail icon to open it up, but to see it I would have to refresh and then it would pop up and then if I went to the home screen, the notification bubble would return. These notifications used to be instantaneous; I sent myself a test e-mail and waited for hours, and after doing several test e-mails, I realized sometimes (not all the time though) the application, even after an hour, was not recognizing I got mail until I refreshed.
I tried changing setting to check mail often, made sure on LauncherPro's preferences I set the notifications to be on... I am just unsure why my notifications would stop working (and my GMail is slowly going to crap - I even uninstalled and reinstalled, did not help).
Does anyone have any advice, opinions, or suggestions for this weird problem? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Bump - does anyone have any suggestions? I just tried uninstalling and reinstalling GMail again with no success.

Check under accounts to make sure that sync is still on for your Gmail account.

Go into Settings > manage apps > all. Open the Gmail icon. Click on "clear cache " and "clear data ". Ignore the warnings. Return to home page, and open Gmail. It will resync, and your problem should be solved.

I've had gmail bug out on me about three times total dating all the way back to my OG droid. It always happened after flashing a new ROM even with full wipes. My situation was a little different (basically if I "deleted" a email in the gmail app it wouldn't actually delete. It would never resync to my phone but I still would get a x amount of new messages. I would then log into my gmail on the pc and there are all the messages that I had "deleted") I solved this once by just clearing data and cache, but the other two times I had to do a wipe and reinstall. What was interesting though is each time I back upd my current Rom and used that on the restore and bam it was fixed.
Is there any way I can change the frequency of when the GMail app checks mail/forwards them to my phone?
through the gmail app itself no. You could use the "mail" provider on the phone and receive gmail that way. In that program you (i think) can set up the frequency that it syncs. A couple of downsides to this though:
1. unless it has changed since I haven't tried it since the OG droid, it won't delete emails off your web based account only your phone.
2. you would need to delete the gmail app on your phone.
Hi,
I stupidely cleaned some Android's apps cache and I forced them to close; but I lost my contacts and it seems that I can't get mails (maybe some settings have been erased). Anybody has an idea to restart these app, even without widget?
Thanks by avance for your answer.
Regards
Just launch that app in app drawer or reboot

have you tried a reboot? usually starts services again.
if not a reboot do you have titanium backups of the apps data? try restore them.
hope it helps!
thanks for your answers, but the reboot did not helped; the following apps are still dead (impossible to click on "force to stop" button):
com.samsung.app.playerready
com.samsung.InputEventApp
com.sec.android.app.lcdtest
Erreur
EncryptApp
etc.
and for example:
com.sec.android.daemonapp
crashNotifier
DataCreate
etc.
has the button "force to stop" ok, but with 0 in App and data, meanning that it's certainly not running.
I lost all my contacts and phone numbers, I still have the sms but without any link with any contact, all disappeared...
Apparently other apps kept their settings.
How stupid am I!
Any new idea will be the wellcome to recover the contacts and phones numbers (+900), I tried to re synchronize with android-sync, and nothing happened.
are your contacts not backed up to google servers? i always keep mine there. either way download supernbackup, see if you can save your contacts and sms. then i would restore a previous backup!
EDIT via nandroid btw
Factory reset will restore apps but not data.
Question = Q&A .
jje
thanks all for your answers; no backup, all data are in Outlook, that's not the biggest problem: when all the other apps still get their own settings and run well (IP camera, ChecmarkCaledrier, etc.), the contacts are not synchronized and I don't know where it's located by the app (named DW Dialer, payed version) to check if the data are effectively lost or if it's just the link to the data..
to Emofishcake: what do you mean by "edit via nandroid by the way"?

oh i meant EDIT: (as in i edited my post) and then restore backup from nandroid (not titanium backup) lol
Well, that's really odd: I still have my sms, all my calls history, all the categories/groups I created under DW Dialer for my contacts, but not the favoris, and not any contact even if I can see the name of the contacts I imported or created before even if I click on the contact button.... Impossible to make any synchronization between my Outlook PC and my S2..
Hi, all,
I recovered all my contacts!!! After many trials of many different kinds, I found that the settings of the Android Sync have been modified: I put again the righ tsetting (from where to where, etc.), and everything went back right! Many thanks for your help anyway, and the moral philosophy is that you must never clean the cache of apps you don't know what they are designed for!
Regards
Well-well-well... I recovered all my contacts because I changed the setting from Outlook to Outlook by default in the Android Sync settings; it means that actually I put all my Outlook contacts into my S2, but I still have lost the Android ones: and it's still impossible to stop Android Sync with the button "force to stop" in Application/manage your services, meanning that the app is still down.
I kept the categories I created, but they are now affected to the google account, not to the android sync account; impossible to reactivate the android sync account. This drives me crazy!
Background: I noticed that Motorola Services was eating a bunch of my battery, so I froze it with TiBu. Blur account disappeared, taking with it my phone contacts (not Gmail or Corporate Sync).
- Thawed the program, still gone.
- Wiped cache, still gone.
- Used Mybackup Root to restore all of my contacts (Gmail, Corporate, Moto services), which involves overwriting the old ones: nope. The contact app doesn't see the phone contacts thru Moto Services because it doesn't see my blur account.
Funny story: Airdroid still sees the phone contacts. They're hiding somewhere. Just not showing up in the contacts app, and I can't seem to download the contact list to my computer.
Does anyone have any ideas before I do a factory reset? I don't flash new roms often for a reason: setting everything back up is a PAIN, dammit.
Contacts > menu > display options
Make sure groups are selected to be displayed by selecting accounts, e.g. Google to expand it and ensure there are checks in groups you want to show up.

Yeah, the problem is I've been storing phone contacts under my Blur account which is what went missing thanks to me screwing around. The only groups available to check are my Gmail and work email, both of which were added by me after the initial setup procedure (and don't have phone numbers associated).
I did some more searching and it looks like others ran into the same problem, which isn't fixed by "thawing" the app. And, it looks like the only solution involves a factory reset. Maybe I'll upgrade my rom version while I'm at it... ah well.
marshmallow contacts app won't start, "require this permission" message displayed
Hi all, hoping some kind soul can help me. My girlfriend has a ZTE Zmax running Android 6.0.1, not rooted.
She can't get into her Contacts app (stock android contacts app). When she taps the Contacts app icon on the home screen, the message "Require this permission" appears. is displayed and the Contacts app does not open. I've searched but haven't found a fix yet.
Things I have tried, didn't help:
- checked permissions for the contacts app. all the following permissions are granted Calendar, Contacts, Location, Phone, SMS, Storage.
- checked permissions for the launcher app.
- tried launching Contacts from the App Drawer instead of Home Screen
- tried a different launcher (Google Now launcher)
- cleared data and cache for the Contacts app
- Force Close and Reboot
- wiped the Cache partition from Recovery
- Disable button for Contacts app is greyed out.
Any ideas? The "Require this Permission" message is strange. Maybe the intended meaning is "This requires permission", but I can't figure out where to grant the permission.
Same exact issue
I found this same exact issue on my mother's phone. Same model phone and version of Android. I searched and could only find this post. Any assistance would be appreciated.
