I have a GT I9100 with Android 4.0.4, the last English firmware.
If i set the Sleep Policy to turn off WIFI when screen goes off, I have no result: WIFI still goes on & on also when screen is locked. I tryed several official ROM, and to resolve this bug I tryed also CustomROM like CM...but no result. It seems like there is an Hardware problem.
I also tryed to edit "com.android.providers.settins" by creating inside the database, the string "wifi_idle_ms" (because i haven't this string by default) with a custom value.
After reading other posts, I decide to ask you, so, anyone has more informations?I don't want to install third part apps even if I know they exist...
It doesn't turn off with the screen, it turns off after several minutes. Not sure exactly what the time-out period is, but is well in to double figures.
Since WiFi is the least of your battery drains, don't worry about it.
Mmm the setting I use is wifi off when phone in sleep state. Not sure how long it takes for the phone to enter into a sleep state.

Have you tried completing full wipes and formating system in cwm then installing your chosen rom. This will be a clean start for your phone, if it persists perhaps it is an hardware issue.

Umm... no. Its not. For it to happen to a lot of people on different roms and kernels? You really think its a kernel issue?
It's probably an issue with cwm and it's also probably related to the type of kernel. To say the truth, I don't think it's that big a deal. It has posed no real problems to me when flashing, and if anything, removing the battery will do the trick. A minor inconvenience in an otherwise perfect tool.

Its not a big deal, but its annoying. You'll have to wait till your phone boots to be able to turn it off. Taking off the case, then taking off the battery cover and taking out the battery is a lot of work to just turn your phone off.

You are completely right. However, it's a free tool.
I mean, even the stock Samsung firmware gives Fc and issues every now and then and they do get paid by us users (both on acquisition and through Google adds, and free marketing data)

Try flashing a different kernel. If you are using the zedomax kernel form galaxys2root.com that is your problem.
I had the same problem just do a wipe and redo the flash. Try aokp ROM I moved from shostock to aokp.

Even if other devices work on your router, you shouldn't count that out. I had a ton of wifi problems on my dinc2 but my desktop and laptop connected to my wifi just fine. I finally rebooted it and it fixed the wifi issues on my phone. Another time all it took was changing the broadcast channel on my router. It's worth a shot since it's easier than sending the phone back.

Good point there. My router is actually on its way out and requires rebooting every now and then for certain devices to connect. I have my phone, laptop, kindle, and a PS3. randomly they will have trouble connecting, but wifi will never turn itself off on my phone
Check this post out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731802
The guy used some app from the play store to fix his WiFi.
ok..im still tryimg to figure out what is causing this issue..
After installing stock 2.3.4 my wifi turns on.Scans for few seconds and turns off by itself. If i enter the menu i get when i dial *#*#4636#*#* during this period and check status
wi-fi state shows enabled
but
Supplicant status shows nothing.
So i thought this issue is probably due to an error in wpa_supplicant file and i replaced it.But still wifi will turn on for a few seconds and turns off by itself.
Also if i enter stock 3e recovery it shows this message.
--Appling Multi-csc...
Installig Multi-csc
can't access to '/system/csc/ATT/system/'.
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
is it due to a problem in a currupted partition..or something like that?if so how can i correct it?i have read that if i flash stock with pit with repartition enabled it will repartition. But also read that it is quite dangerous.
can somebody help me with this...

Ok so I so I have suffered from authentication errors and ridiculously poor WiFi range since I rooted my phone. Or most probably since I flashed a custom Rom (omega) for the first time..
Now, after endless research and lots of trial and error (or as I say, terror) I have finally found a solution. Although this is NOT and ideal solution, it solved my problem. Not being able to use WiFi at work when I'm only around 7 meters from the server is an absolute no no for me! Especially twinned with the frustration of 30 attempts to authenticate and still having 70 odd % signal and yet no connectivity.
So here goes..
For me.. disabling power saving mode via *#0011# did NOT work.
Nor did flashing back to stock without root.
Flashing cm9 did NOT work.
Flashing stock did Not work. And full cwm wipe didn't work either. And all other combinations.
So by hard work, research into other threads, Lots of terror and pure luck. I fixed my problem.
Apologies if this does not work for you.. but if u Have simular problems to me. I'm sure it will work. So follow these steps
1. back up via android. Copy backup to pc if u try this and it doesn't work u cant go back to before. Also backup and apps or pics music etc to pc.
2. Download latest stock Rom with root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704185
Thanks to wanam!
3. full Wipe, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache. Flash latest wanam stock Rom. And repeat the wiping in recovery again. Full, cache and dalvik. Fix permissions.
4. Now reboot. And test if u still have the problem. As I did still. If not... yay you!
5. Do a hard reset. Yes a factory reset. NOT a full wipe via recovery. A reset via settings/backup and wipe/factory personal data reset. WARNING by doing this you will lose all app settings. All android backups and all data on internal storage. I believe this will also leave your ext sd contents unusable so ALWAYS backup to pc!
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 again. This made my WiFi range and connectivity problems
Disappear! Although I still had authentication errors
7.Then repeat step 5 and see your outcome. It's seems for me atleast, that a double wipe was necessary. I'm not sure about you guys.
I hope this works for you all!
Thank me if it did or If I've helped in anyway!
Happy to answer questions! Noob or not.

I have an old Galaxy S and I run Wifi Analyzer on both (CM9.1 on S and CF rooted stock JB on S III) and boy.... there are more available networks
on S then on new brand super-duper flagship. Is my new phone faulty?
I am seriously pissed.
i have tried the above methods in vain -.- still not resolved
-------------------
what causes this problem anyway? it just all happened randomly
Has anyone found a fix for this yet???
I'm pretty convinced this is to do with router settings personally, but I don't know much about them so.....
The settings for my wifi were already in there from when I was on ACE 4.2.5. I wiped cache, dalvik cache AND did a factory reset. The settings were still there. They are the same settings that worked before. Also, I went to client's offices that have wifi and I got the same problem there too. If it's something to do with the routers, I know a lot of routers that all of the sudden have issues that didn't before THIS ROM update...
Finally fixed my error on the 4th Step.
I though I would never made it , but I did
I had the authentication Wi-Fi error.
Thanks for the Guide.
(I used Omega ROM 50.1 v for this Guide quite same as the Wanam ROM.)

Hi.
I had the same problem with one SGS3 from two I bought.
The one worked fine, but the second restart twice and more a day. I changed it in the shop. But the problem was still there. The akku was hot and after 2 hours without any input the akku was 0%.
I changed the phone the second time in the shop.
But also this device had the problems, sometimes the phone doesn't see the akku.
Then I had the idea, I looked into the device pressed the akku with my thumbnail and the akku worked.
With a little paper I fix the akku and everything is fine until today.

No, rooting won't change anything, so no use in this case. You're completely stock, so it MAY be a hardware issue. Did it work when you bought it initially? Or has it been like that since you unpacked it?
Also, you're on 4.0.3. Upgrade to 4.0.4 and see if the problem persists. Update via KIES and do nothing else after upgrading (don't do a data wipe or anything else).

Hi,
I noticed the same behavior if I am turning on the WiFi, while data communication over 3G is done at that moment. The WiFi freezes, the phone starts to heat and if to turn on the screen lock after sometime the phone will not be turned on until the battery is removed. If to look at battery usage statistic after the battery removal you will see the gap in it.
It does not happen if the WiFi is turned on while the communication over 3G is not done.
Tried to search for solutions, but unfortunately it was not successful.
So decided to keep the WiFi turned on constantly, just to avoid this issue.

Workaround I found is when you try turning on wifi and if it doesn't turn on immediately ... Just restart your phone, the wifi will be turned on, instead of removing the battery and putting it back.

@OP: If you recently purchased it go back and they'll give you another one that will not have that issue. If you bought it from someone else, well, there we can start talking about flashing and what not.
