Can I install my own CWM over stock one? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not a developer but I know from previous roms I've used that there is a touch version of CWM. I'm on wanamlite ICS 12.2 which doesn't use the touch based version. I'm wondering if I can flash a CWM touch version over this existing one on a Phenomenal 5.5 Medium kernel?

No. Recovery is baked into the kernel. Any recovery you flash independently of the kernel will only persist until you reboot. Then it's gone & you're back to whatever recovery is supplied with the kernel.
If you really want touch recovery (why people get barred up over this I have no idea. I mean, how much time per week does one spend in recovery flashing/backing/up restoring...All of 20 minutes ?), use a kernel which has it.

Never knew that it was a part of the kernel, thanks!

If you want touch recovery, flash Siyah kernel.

[Q] ClockworkMod and CyanogenMod

I just got my ATT Galaxy S2 rooted with Method 1 (Flash flashing codeworkx CWM then Super One Click). Before I try to flash CyanogenMod. I'd like to have noob questions.
I'm told that CyanogenMod comes with it's own Kernel, does that mean the flashed codeworkx CWM kernel will be replaced with CM kernel after flashing CM? If so, do I still have ClockworkMod? Does CM kernel also comes with CWM? How could get ClockworkMod to upgrade new CM if I lose CWM?
you will still have cwm recovery once you flash cm7, it may be a slightly different version, but you will still have it.

I've never heard of a CM7 kernel for a Samsung device that didn't have CWM working.
In general, it's VERY rare for a custom kernel not to have CWM. CWM is usually one of the first orders of business for kernel developers on a new device.

My CMW Recovery was intact after the flash.

[Q] Touch Recovery for i777?

Is there a touch CWM available for our SGS II's? I know there's one for the international version at least. How hard would it be to get/port to our phones?
I'm not sure if a touch recovery would be practical but it would definitelybe cool

At this point there is no touch recovery available for our phone for ICS. There was at least one release of siyah kernel for gingerbread that had touch recovery included. I don't see touch recovery being added relatively soon but it is a possibility for the future. If we end up getting a port of the siyah ICS kernel it will come with touch recovery.

Maybe you know something I don't but if that has something to with ROM Manager it is NOT good to be used on our phone. There is a reason why it says to not use ROM manager in the FAQ thread. There are 2 main kernels for our phone that are for gingerbread, Entropy's DD and Siyah kernel. Only the latest Siyah kernel had touch recovery. As for ICS there is Fenny's kernel which doesn't have touch, Entropy's kernel which also doesn't have touch, and the CM9 official kernel that does not have touch. ROM manager's recovery does not work with our phone since it is part of the kernel.

It looks like me and patriot are both right.. if you flash it it works and you boot into touch cwm.. but after you turn your phone on and boot back into recovery its normal cwm.. so it works but it doesent fully work lol

This. Siyah 2.6.14.
from what i've read, the Siyah does indeed some with them!
ROM manager is usually advised to stay away from, but in the latest CM builds, it works beautifully
Works

I went ahead and gave this a shot, and all seems to be working well. Right now I've tested it on both the CM9 Kernel (AOKP 4.0.4) and Entropy’s #202 (Ultimatum 2.0 Beta 3). Basically all you need to do is download this zip and boot into CWM, when you flash the zip it knows how to handle it and instantly reboots itself into the touch version. The interface is the same but I have to admit having touch instead of mashing buttons is pretty slick. I imagine the reference to the "not sticking" is because you're flashing other ROM's, which will already have a version of CWM injected (probably non-touch) and you'll have to go flash this over it.
Edit: I should note that you want to be careful doing this, because if you mess it up you no longer have a way to restore a backup or install a new zip until you start over by flashing from ODIN or the like.

ClockWorkMod v6.0.3.x for i9100

Dear all,
The official latest CWM release for i9100 is v5.8.3.1 (see www.clockworkmod.com). Is there an official (or fully working version) of CWM 6.0.3.x for the i9100? For e.g. T-Mobile there is a release available. Can I use this as well?
for now, I can also flash Philz kernel to get CWM v6.0.3.2, but I first want to have a separate CWM version installed. Thanks for help.

I'm also trying to install/flash latest cwm without being part of any kernel / mod. Did you have any luck with that?
Philz IS stock kernel.....no tweaks, no mods......other than CWM and root.......afaik.....if you want a (cwm + root) stock phone, philz will give you that.......
My Wife says I'm a phone geek.....
I'd have to agree.....
I don't see why I should install a kernel, even stock, when only recovery partition needs changing. In most phones there are flashable files through adb, or similar ways, to install cwm. Will it work through rom manager app?
I'm not sure about just CWM on its own. It probably does exist. Just needed to jump in quick.... DO NOT use ROM manager on an i9100. Sure-fire way to screw things up /brick.
Ps. Keith is right, the only thing different about PhilZ kernel is recovery and it's rooted. Nothing else is changed.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
And when you add the fact that it can be flashed using the stock recovery.........
It doesn't get any easier, safer or straightforward than that. No disrespect intended, but I can't see the problem with doing it this way.......

You really are trying to make this as difficult as possible for yourself, aren't you ?
Take the good advice you've been given; particularly the bit about staying away from Rom Manager unless you want to find out why you don't use it with the SGS2 the hard way.
Will do that... however, I'll try to make a flashable zip (with stock recovery) of latest cwm alone, and will report back... just in case someone wants it in the future.

sorry im so noob on this devices, i've been flashing on nexus4, galaxy ace, etc but never needed a kernel for CWM

Hmm I think even though you have a galaxy ace, it seems that it's not the same thing as us. As you've seen with nexus devices, you've 1 separate partition for recovery, another one for kernel. Thing is with the original line of Galaxy S devices (maybe I9100 too i'm not sure), the recovery and the kernel are made into one single binary. So by that fact, if you flash a rom like PA, pacman or CM10.1-10.2, It will replace your current kernel and recovery like any other custom rom made for it. You can see daniel644's installation video to see how the process is done.
Hope this helps.

I would think twice about either leaving it stock or getting the power button fixed, because if you mess up and need to get into recovery or download mode(bootloop for example), you are going to have a **** of a time. At least get yourself a usb jig and also familiarize yourself with using adb. Anyways...
First you'll need to flash the modified philz kernel from HERE to get root access. Read carefully, especially the second and third posts. You will have to match the kernel to the stock rom version you are using. Depending on which custom rom you want to install, you'll probably need to then flash a newer recovery, but take your time and read up as much as you can on the steps to take in flashing etc from the OP's and other threads and you should be ok. Follow each step to the letter, as you don't want to mess anything up with no power button!!

Yes there is, but not a standalone zip. You need to flash a kernel that has twrp like apolo or gustavo kernel.

Gustavos doesn't work, only works on later android. I'm not 100% sure apolo will work on stock rom either, it might. It definately works on custom touchwiz 4.1.2 roms such as neatrom(from 4.x branch). The philz kernel from the link I posted earlier(XWLS8) has touch ui if that is your main need. Only it would need to be updated if you were to try flashing a 4.4 or 5.x rom later though.
Apolo thread
Apolo works on stock 4.1.2. You need apolo v4.15b
Even if everything goes ok, the OP might still end up with a boot loop......In which case he's still gonna need all the buttons to boot into recovery to wipe data........
I've lost count of the number of times I've advised getting hardware repaired BEFORE flashing stuff......I owned the S2 and flashed it to within an inch of it's life, but I wouldn't have even considered flashing with broken buttons........
Get it repaired, it really will stop you facing problems.......
