Yeah but it uses the HTC unlock, so...

Root will always be available.
HTC gave us a root method
But the annoying thing is that HTC gave us a root method that wipes your phone first.
I'm still waiting for a new temp root exploit so that I can run Titanium Backup first before I do the dev unlock.
I wonder if anybody is actually working on one, or if everybody just takes it on faith that *somebody* must be.
I bet if the HTC method wasn't there, people would be trying harder to find one.
</rant>
This tool works like a charm, and HTC has no idea you are rooted. I used it last night - took about 10 min. You pretty much download drivers and this app, and run the app. Very easy.

What's wrong with HTC Unlock?
I used HTC Unlock and it was a breeze. Given being a noob since this is my first HTC device i've tinkered with, it was quite painless
The only things wrong with it are that:
1. It wipes all your customizations so you have to start over from scratch, or from what some non-root backup app can restore which isn't much.
2. It doesn't give you S-Off, so you can't flash radio updates, but to me that's no big deal.
The biggest issue with HTC dev on the newest H-boot is that you cannot flash kernels normally through recovery
Never accept an OTA. S-Off is soooooo convenient

I thought TWRP / HTC Dumlock could now flash kernels with S-OFF:
http://www.pocketables.com/2012/07/team-win-recovery-project-2-2-1-adds-dumlock-for-boot-flashing-on-latest-evo-4g-lte-firmware.html
Regaw uses minimal user information in the unlocking process.
With that said, you can never be sure HTC doesn't know you unlocked it. Frankly, Its not going to matter if they know or know when your boot loader says relocked.

Not through the normal channels with the new H-boot
Sorry, I meant to say S-ON.
(So are there abnormal channels for flashing a kernel then?)
Do I have this all wrong, or isn't it true that a ROM includes a kernel, and you can flash a ROM with S-ON, but not a kernel by itself?

The kernel in the ROM doesnt get flashed. When going from sense to sense it isnt an issue because its still the stock HTC kernel
If you try flashing cm10 without pushing the boot.img the phone wont boot because it has an AOSP ROM and sense kernel
Abnormal channels would be your fastboot flash, htc dumlock, or flashgui
What's the problem.with not being able to flash the kernal thur recovery? You can still push it via fastboot. It not so much of an inconvenience that you would want to not have root and do tons of cool **** to your phone. Who cares if HTC knows you are unlocked? BFD!
Unlock your phone and enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed except flashing radios and kernal via recovery.

I unlocked the bootloader and rooted yesterday, because as a Mac owner, I got tired of there being few rooting solutions for the platform (didnt want to install Linux, or Bootcamp/Parallels for Windows, etc.).
Now, I really like a few of the roms that I got a chance to download and play with, but realized 4g, Wifi, and camera aren't working. I need to find a solution but it seems like flashing the appropriate kernels would be the only one.
Im just trying to start a discussion to remedy this problem because I'm sure I'm no the only one having it.

No, you cannot. I has been proved by him, me and others. Even using a modified 2.3.4 original from the OTA (just the sprint spyware removed) it won't flash at all. Look at his post. I tried that too and samething. Only thing that the official HTC unlock (with S-ON) is letting us do is flash a recovery and flash roms. thats it.

You're saying a modified stock kernel to remove the spyware will not flash correct?
Sorry but why would you want to root using their method? I rooted my 3d, in 15 min, a month before they released their method (which requires a contract be signed.)
I have to admit that I rushed a bit. I also got the phone the day that HTC released their method. I thought to myself - well this is supported by the manufacturer, so it must be legit, and relatively safe, (even with the void your warranty warnings - that's standard issue when you're fiddling with your stuff), because who wants the backlash of thousands of pissed off customers?

wow, two confirmations kernels can be flashed using the official htc unlock method via the bootloader and fastboot! looks like with the official htc unlock method, write access to the boot partition (where kernel is stored) is only granted while the bootloader is in fastboot usb mode, not in normal or recovery android mode?
interesting ....

I know, i know...probably sick of these questions by now...
So i typically went the s-off un-official root methods with evo/3vo. Im thinking this time around i want to take a different approach as my needs have changed.
Im much more interested in keeping stock rom/kernel for the time being and being able to use root apps (like tether).
The grey area for me is exactly what does the HTC method of unlock allow me to do? I understand its not S-off.
Is it possible to root my phone and still take OTA's? (via HTC unlock or other methods)
Lastly what is the downside to HTC dev unlock? i understand it marks the phone in some way as unlocked and voids the warranty?
thanks
I know for a fact you could have root and not have to do the HTC unlock.

Unlock allows you to flash custom roms, like the Viper Rom.
Direct form HTC's bootloader unlock FAQ guide
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.

s-off allows you to flash radio's and kernels. Unlocking only allows you to flash Roms, and other things that don't effect the kernel or radio images.
IE, none of the aosp roms would be able to be flashed without s-off, because they use different kernels than the stock one.
Root works, and I have installed viperRom and it works well with a few mods that the stock rom doesnt have.
oh crap!! I didn't even think about not being able to flash AOSP without S-off. My only intention buying this phone was to be able to run AOSP ASAP.
But wait, are you sure about not flashing kernels? I thought people with the Evo 3d and S-on were able to flash kernels via flash_image GUI?

So i rooted using the script...painless.
Just what i wanted, root but stock everything. Also picked up a app i saw in the apps section called voodoo something or other, that lets u temp unroot for updates/backup root. Sounds cool, hope it works. SU, wireless tether, and titanium all seem to work fine.
Maybe its just me, but i did notice the phone has some stutters now during startup and shortly after...prob just me

HTc DEV unlock = root for all practical purposes. You just slap on Twrp and flash a rooted ROM.
However, since you accepted the OTA you are now severly limited even with an unlocked bootloader. See the first part of my post.
I actually wasn't rooted or unlocked when i took the ota. I was happy with the speed of the new evo so i didn't think i would need to overclock it like every other device i owned thus no need to root. I took the ota cuz i had major issues with my wifi and that's a huge deal to me since 3g blows so bad in my area that my browser times out..... long story. Sorry. Now i just want to customize. So sorry if this is a repetitive question, but can i use adb shell to flash a rom? If so, does anybody have a step by step? I've always just used clockwork mod in the past so i am new to adb.
Recap:

not rooted
HTC DEV unlocked.

Sounds like regawmod, you need to reboot manually as aoo as it says rebooting. It would probably be easier to unlock manually.a lot of people seem to have trouble. It will probably be updated soon but its been a problem for the last two updates.
I have Hboot 1.15, Fresh EVO OS. And used the Regaw Autoroot following the OTA Update. I heard you can do this using fastboot or HTCdev, but I'm not sure how to do this... And could not find any answers (My concern is that the new FRESH updates use the new radios, and I updated to it, but can't flash the new radios)
If this has already been answered I apologize, but I couldn't find it.
Thank you for the help!
Dude there's threads all over the forum about this issue. Just spend 2minutes looking and you'll be all set
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
You can't update radios if you are s-on hboot 1.15. Your only option to update the radios is to relock and take the ota or install the new ruu. Then unlock again, install twrp, and then install your favorite rom. As many will state, never take the ota because you may loose ability to get s-off in the future. This may be true, but there is no s-off solution for your hboot anyway so you might as well bite the bullet now and live in the present instead of waiting for something that may never happen in the future.
Interesting. All right Thanks for your help. And as for there being threads "all over" I was getting conflicting reports, since I saw on one page where it was possible to flash using HTCdev with S-on, but there was no link or instructions given.
To address ur main concern, there is no need to update your radios. If you want to run a rom that is based off the latest update all u need to do is make sure your kernel matches the kernel in the rom. You can update your kernel with Flash img GUI, found in the app store. Just download the rom u want open flash img GUI select the rom and choose to flash kernel img. Once complete, wipe and flash rom. Njoy!

I'm a little bit hesitant to do that since I've read it can go crazy wrong and I'm not as savvy with the phones as the folks on the forums. Do I have to though in order to update my PRI?
I'm not sure, I've been s-off since I got the phone.

I am S-ON HBoot 1.15. Is it possible to flash HTC Stock recovery, go to stock rooted rom, use OTA root Keeper and take the new OTA?
You don't need OTA root keeper because your going to have to do HTC dev to unlock the device again.
With that being said I wouldnt recommend taking the OTA or running the ruu to update because you'll be on the new hboot

Not to mention the new base for stock has introduced a few of its own issues that the new firmware/hboot can not fix. Several people have attempted to downgrade thinking its the best alternative and brick their phones in doing so. The new firmware doesn't change much anyway
I'm not new to rooting, I've rooted Samsung phones, Motorola and nexus. This is my first HTC phone and man is everything different. Could some one please explain to me what S-off is using dummy terms lol. I mean if I root but stay s-on can you still flash Roms?

Getting Soff can unlock you boot loader and if u do it through htc devs it unlocks your our boot loader but keeps Son but it's you use revone , it would unlock Son to soff and you are able to change CID and flash radios thru hboot but you can flash any rom that is compatible to the htc one but just unlocking the bootloader. You don't necessary need soff to flash Roma but it's good to have off thru if u want to return you phone back to the carrier and remove Tampered and return done back to stock !!!!

I'm not sure the last post was clear for a NOOB. S-On / Off refers to the security of the device. With S-On, the phone will only allow you to flash things built for your device. This prevents you from messing up the phone by flashing the wrong stuff or wrong area of the memory.
You can unlock your phone without S-Off, root it, and flash any ROMs you like, so long as they are for your particular phone model.
