I'm currently on GB, do I need to install an ICS rom before I install a ported JB rom? Or can I go straight from GB (with doing a full wipe before hand of course)?

ics bootloader is reqd for aokp roms 4.0.4 and jb 4.1.1
there are users who flash jb directly from gb roms and gb roms have gb bootloader so they went into semi brick and had to flash back to stock rom

You are probably confusing the OP. DO NOT listen to this guy.
Thanks a lot for the answers guys. Just out of curiosity, why is neerajganga saying an ics boot loader is needed? That doesn't make sense to me because I've gone from GB to ICS without ever having to touch the boot loader.

I think you are confusing bootloaders for kernels. But by calling it a bootloader you will confuse the OP into possibly screwing up their phone. I don't know if you need an ics kernel for jb. I'm just trying to clear up the misnomer.

Being what I just went through with my phone... I assured I was flashing an ICS ROM with a proper kernel. Then move up into JB. I had flashed a wrong kernel and wound up having to back track and redo allot.
May seem like more work yet taking it step by step sometimes in the end is easier. Just a word of thought from a noob who twice thought he bricked his phone. Yet now works great on CM9 thinking of moving up into CM10 soon.
The new versions of siyah and dream kernel are both ics and jb friendly may be more but these are what I use

neerajganga, I think you're in the wrong forum. This is for the ATT SGSII model I777, your sig indicates you've got an I9100 (though that confuses me because even I9100 users never need to flash bootloaders except in softbrick recoveries, just like I777).

Roms have to be specific to our device to work. There are plenty of roms running right now on our phone. More are, I'm sure, being ported over. You just need to give it a while. I'm sure we'll have plenty more roms coming this way, just need to be patient.
i got my repaired gs2 back now want to try a good aosp ics rom??

ICS roms are beta at best, I wouldn't advise flashing one.
There is CM9 which is AOSP and there is Samsung leaks, all need ICS bootloaders, search and read before you even consider flashing any of the ICS roms.
how to get ics bootloader?? will it be automatically there if i flash a ics leaked rom??

Depends on the rom, stock ones will come with ICS bootloaders, you *may* need them first for CM9. Also if you want to go back to gingerbread from ICS you will most than likely need to flash back to the old bootloaders from this thread.
Hi guys
I have seen some roms requiring installing new ics bootloader, and have seen some problems with it etc etc, so could anyone please tell me some info about the new ics bootloader, whats the difference to the old one, is it better? can it be downgraded? will we have to install it later on anyway?
using wanamlite lpq does this one have the new bootloader?
thank you
You don't need to know .
ICS does not need you to mess with bootloaders.
Its only a possible downgrade problem.

I never flashed any bootloaders on my phone before installing cm9.
First time installing CyanogenMod 9 to your Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM:
- READ FAQs: http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.p...sked_Questions
- Make sure you're running ICS bootloaders (but not LPH or LPQ, use this Download) and a proper working CWM like the one from CM7
And
Using the noob-proof ODIN method:
- Make sure you're running ICS bootloaders (but not LPH or LPQ, use this Download)
- Download CM9 Resurrection Edition

Should I flash the bootloader ?
You don't need to. There are currently no reports of issues having not flashed the bootloader. However, if you flash the ICS bootloaders, you can't reset the download count with a JIG any more.

Well I downgraded my bootloader, so that I can use USB JIG to reset binary counter of my S II. So far I have no problem.
I think the new bootloader prohibits the binary counter reset and other than that no fancy thing on it.

or you can use triangleaway
never had a jig, and got rid of my triangle thanks to that
A JIG is always handy if for some reason you can't enter download mode using the keys (even with the new bootloader and even if you don't have to clear the counter or triangle). Plus, it's pretty cheap so it's worth having one IMO.
As for the bootloaders, I've flashed several stock GB versions in the past, always ignoring the new SBLs with the new behavior (not clearing the counter and triangle), and did the same when flashing the LP3 ICS stock version. Working fine with the old bootloader.

From i can read, all the new bootloader does is restrict you from using a USB JIG to reset the flash counter. Basicly thats not an upgrade, its a downgrade.

And for the thread starter, search the forums. It's not hard to find how to root and start flashing your phone.

He didnt say it was. Even so, the rom was "released" to testers, and "leaked" to public. Only final is released to public.

This to me seems that Ben101 says "Stock jelly bean is still not released", which krayndr then declares "False!"
I work in software; I differentiate between a leak and a release. "Released to testers" is not a release. We send many builds to testers before we have a release candidate.

Not sure why you're directing this question to me; is it because I said I work in software? That doesn't mean I work in developing software specifically for this device, or even for Samsung devices in general...
But if you're having issue with a leaked firmware, doesn't it make sense to go back to a released firmware?

yes, u can do So ma8
but why we prefer GB > ICS > JB is that ur installation goes smooth without any issue and also rooting ICS is much easier (since lot of option's to do so) rather with GB.
but the choice is urs
PS- regarding EMMC bug it comes only with the stock kernel of ICS 4.0.4, while ICS 4.0.3 is safe from the same(EMMC bug)

Hi
First of all you need to root the phone. The best way to do that would be to flash cf-root compatible with your rom version. You can find exactly what your build is by checking settings > about phone
Find compatible cf-root kernel and put it in PDA in odin and flash... there are lot's of guides out there - won't be hard to find
Second, before you go further you need yoo updete your bootloader. So either flash ICS stock through odin (not recommended cause will unroot again) or flash bootloader through odin. Again there are proper guides for that...
Then you can upgrade to whatever you want...
Keep in mind that emmc cap bug does not exist in GB kernels. so you can use the CWM recovery in cf-root kernels for GB rather safely.
If you update to stock ICS then you need to keep an eye what kernel you're using to wipe data. Siyah and dorimanx are safe and I always use them.
Loads of roms out there, pure aosp, cm based, aokp based and the leaked sammy rom. Personally checked alot of each first three and also several versions of the leaked one... All good.
Word of edvice - do read more on those things. No matter how much expirience people who answer threads like that have, you'll never substitute your own knowledge and expirience.
Go on and root and enjoy the android world, mate. Best of luck
Guys I'm fairly new to all the flashing and stuff but have come a long way with my several xperiments :victory:. I've a Xperia Neo L and with the stock ROM (locked BL) I had made a Nandroid backup. Today I unlocked my Bootloader and installed MIUI 2.11.30 from MIUI Australia.
1) I'm just curious will my previous backup can be used to restore my old stock ROM considering the BL status is changed now?
2) Stock ROM is backed up with CWM Recovery ver 5.5 and I'm currently running CWM Recovery ver 6.0.1.2. Will this have any impact?
Please forgive me for the noobish questions...
BL unlock status shouldn't make a difference. Different CWM version can give problems afaik, but chances are it works fine because of backward compatibility in restoring.

Hmmm Now I'm running a MIUI ROM based on 4.04 and I'm curious to try Turbo UI r4 based on JB 4.1. For that i need to first flash a JB kernel. Will my nandroid backups still be working as I'm changing kernels?
One more time..
GB kernel GB ROM
ICS kernel ICS ROM
JB kernel JB ROM
Any other combination MAY work, but they are looking for trouble.
Right Thankyou!
