[Q] Siyah 4.0.X - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I know this is a very basic question. But, it would be great if someone can answere this for me. I see a change log on Siyah Kernel 4.0.1 that reads like this "No Cap_Erase, No hardbrick". Does this mean ICS 4.0.4 is safe to use if I have Siyah Kernel 4.0.1 or above ? I think after reading a lot of hardbrick cases on XDA .. What I understood was most of the cases were because of the kernel that is being used rather than the firmware ... am I right on this ?
Thanks.

Every version of Siyah above 3.5.2 are safe.

I believe you are right. He only had one that was bad, but that was a long time ago. You just need to be aware of the version you download (only the s2 one) and if they are compatible with the version of android you're running (ICS/JB)

You can root without the need to insecure kernel. The method is available in the root guide in the official firmware thread in the dev forum.
If you want to use an insecure kernel then you can use anyone of them, doesn't need to match your current firmware... just chose the latest one.
Thanks for the fast reply this mean i can use Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3 = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274

I have no idea how you got to that from the above, but yes, I guess you could use Lite'ning ROM, but that's nothing to do with what you asked for. Do you understand the difference between kernel, ROM and root?

Which version Siyah, and which version VK?
Perhaps you were trying to install an S3 version of Siyah? Or an ICS version of Siyah to a Gingerbread version of VK? Or a GB version of Siyah to an ICS version of VK?
Can't answer the question without knowing versions. (or filenames of what you downloaded)

MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG Kernel?

Is there any way of finding out wether or not I have a kernel that is affected by the MMC-Superbrick-bug? I strongly believe I am not affected by this bug, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I have a Cyanogenmod Kernel which I flashed using the "noob-proof" guide for Cyanogenmod 9.

-Only original/stock kernels of ICS 4.0.4 firmwares are affected by the super brick bug.
Kernels based on the stock 4.0.4one may also contain the bug e.g insecure kernels for rooting or CF-ROOT.
-99.9% is the custom kernels however do not have this super brick bug. I can confirm these kernels don't have it:
-Siyah kernel
-Dorimanx kernel
-dream kernel
-Speedmod kernel
-Neak kernel
-Codeworkx kernel, shipped with CYANOGENMODs and AOKP Roms

Thanks a ton! You guys are the best :good:
Guys its only a suggestion.....
It will be good if some developer can make a windows based application or script that can check any kernel with "MMC_CAP_ERASE=1 or ENABLED"
So one will have to just select a kernel file (.zip or .tar or zimage) and the application will return with a message saying "This Kernel is SAFE to Flash !!!" or "Danger !!! This kernel has Brick bug. Install with extreme caution"
That will help people to check any kernel before flashing and without any fear of brick..
Add fluxi kernel to the safe kernels list.

Hi guys, I'm new here and I'm thinking about changing the ROM on my SGS2.
Searching around the internet I noticed the warning about this bug quite a few times. I didn't find a way to check if I got it though.
Here are the info from my phone:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: I9100XXLPQ
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505 [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.XXLPQ
I've updated from GB to ICS when it first came out through Odin. I didn't wait for the ROM from my provider, though, but just downloaded a rom from some Poland provider.
So, do I have this bug? If you can't help me, can you please tell me how I can find out?
Thanks
Theres a sticky in the general section listing the firmwares affected by the bug. But it only affects 4.0.4. You're on 4.0.3
So as long as you dont upgrade to 4.0.4 stock you're safe.

As of now, nobody seems to have reported the emmc bug on the leaked JB. So its probably safe. If you want to be 100% safe, you may want to use a custom kernel with the JB stock firmware.

How can I verify my phone is safe from brickbug issue ?

I am going to install custom JB and test a couple of custom kernels. But I'm not sure if all custom JB kernels are 100% safe ? I know Dorimanx, Siyah and Philz are safe.
Btw will that procedure be safe for me (I am on a stock GB 2.3.3 now) :
1. Root phone
2. Flash custom JB rom with CWM or ODIN.....or flash safe custom kernel first ? If so what custom kernel will fit stock GB 2.3.3

First You have to chceck if You have brick bug chip with "emmc brickbug check" from Play Store or with app from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27014974&postcount=1
And You need to know which kernels are safe but I don't have exact info. The kernels that I mentioned earlier are safe.

You're on GB so none of those kernels will work for you.
You'd need to first flash stock 4.0.3 and then you can flash one of those kernels.
Or directly flash the leaked 4.1 stock JB. Like I said, AFAIK nobody has found it to be affected by the emmc bug so you should be safe flashing it. Else if you don't feel it safe, use the procedure I mentioned to install siyah, dori, etc.

This may be a bit of a n00b question, but I want to make sure I don't risk bricking my phone...
I have Android stock 4.0.4 on a non-rooted phone with the superbrick bug (damn!).
(Network unlocked Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 Android 4.0.4 stock image (downloaded via mobile internet),
Baseband I9100XXLQ6,
Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 22 22:58:24 KST 2012,
Build number IMM76D.XWLPW.)
If I only want superuser access on the phone, what is the safest way of going about it? And is there a way of backing up absolutely everything on the phone including the hidden folders like /EFS etc in case I want to go back to the non-rooted version, or in case something goes wrong and I can still flash the phone?
I found a tutorial on teamandroid that looks the easiest to follow, it states to install Odin, then Download SiyahKernel Root I9100XWLPW, then flash/install, does this sound safe, or is there a risk of bricking my phone as I have 4.0.4 with the superbrick bug. (It's a simplified version of the tutorial as I cannot post links yet!)
PS I won't be updating the firmware after this.
Thanks in advance guys.
PS If I do need to flash the 4.0.3 or earlier, where can I find the official ROM's?

[Q] Can I flash a custom ROM ?

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum.
Currently I'm using my SGS II with ICS Stock (4.0.4) upgraded through Samsung Kies (hope it clears that I've stock ROM).
My Baseband version : I9100DDLPB
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT
Build Number : IMM76D.XWLPW
I've recently rooted my phone to flash the custom ROM.
But today i checked some posts from this forum that, flashing a SGS II running on Stock 4.0.4 may brick the handset here.
I read the complete post and got very much disappointed that I couldn't flash any custom ROM from my Stock ROM, but lastly I looked over the firmwares which have these emmc bug and found that my device is not in the list.
So with this information can anybody tell me whether I can go for flash the custom ROM ? or do I need to flash a new Kernel ?
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
If it's not listed as an 'insane chip' (affected by the emmc bug then it should be safe to wipe. But if you're gonna be flashing a custom ROM eventually, you may as well flash a custom kernel now itself. Just to be completely safe, ya know?

Just now checked with an app available on Google Play, eMMC Brickbug Check and got the result as "Insane Chip".
Also tried with Got Brick bug found in this forum. It also said the same like DANGER !!! :crying: :crying:
So I think, customization is over for me !!!! I should stay out from flashing ROMs.
And HAXTREME, Thanks for the reply.
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
Flash a safe kernel which has MMC_CAP_DISABLED (e.g. siyah kernel) on your rom with odin. You will get yellow triangle but you can remove it later with triangle away if you want to
From that point on you can flash any custom rom you want or or do a wipe from cwm...
Key is making sure you're running a safe kernel all the time, then you should have no problems, as long as you flash roms which are compatible with I9100 international version

Correct.
I would not wait for Samsung fixing anything in regards of this matter. The community has brought this huge issue to their attention long time ago and nontheless they released / keep releasing (?) dangerous updates to their customers!
Elite Recognized Developer "Entropy512" has written a very interesting (and long!) story of his experiences with Samsung:

No problems flashing siyah because emmc bug is disabled.
AS to an update from Samsung I do not believe there will be one as they are releasing Jellybean by the endof the year,

AFAIK the brick bug is non-deterministic. So you could wipe data several times without a problem n suddenly one time you try it n your phone is a rather expensive paperweight. If your phone indeed has an 'insane chip' count yourself lucky and don't risk it too often.

you will never be totally free of the brick bug, since it is embedded in the kernal. Developers of Philz, Dorimanx and others have edit the code that cause the brick bug to disable it.
When flashing avoid using any stock kernal from 4.0.4 and above to avoid the embedded brick bug software.
