Should I root??? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been using s3 fr past 2weeks. It performs awesomely... super fast and all.. should I root? I know abt the warranty problem. But still, wot r the benefits on rooting s3? Is it worth? I know rooting gives us root privileges. But, is rooting s3 really worth or at all needed?

The accepted opinion is that if you have to ask then don't root .
Root when you require root or decide to join XDA Developers forum to flash mods and custom roms etc .

+1 Read about rooting, roms, kernels, apps and then decide. Rooting has many advantages but if you don`t need/miss them don`t.

Well of you have to ask about the advantages than you will be better off without rooting your phone..
But the once you get root priviledges..you can modify the device to your liking ..you dont have you follow your devicemaker's configurations...biggest advantages is that you can change your operating system to something different which suits your needs ..

If you don't know any of the benefits, and you have to ask other people whether to root or not, you either should read up or not root.

Can u give some specific advantages? I'm not so ignorant of rooting. But I just don't know in much detail about it. last time I rooted was my old xperia x10 mini pro. I rooted coz it dint support app2sd. And that was a terrible problem. Used an xperia mini pro sk17i till now for about a year. Though it was 1ghz, I wanted ta over clock it. For good performances in games and all but was waiting to buy a new phone. Now gte an s3 and I don't plan ta change it fr a while.. so...

So what do you want that requires root.
Root and its uses are plastered all over this forum .
Start here read this then decide .

Follow ups are going to be which root shall i use . what about warranty what about the custom rom counter my update has failed due to root how do i remove root .

I googled it for you and can gladly announce that googling "android root advantages" gives good results. I just don't want to copy the text and don't want to post external links but the first results shall help.
Cheers.

can you give me some link of those games?
Sorry that would be Warez and thus illegal and not tolerated on Xda.
Furthermore these modified Apk's often include other enhancements such as Trojans or Adware.
Any particular reason you cannot root?
Warranty is not a reason, thanks to Chainfire =)

What f888 nonsense posted above .
That is clean unroot process .
Alternative is to format via recovery cache system data preload result no root no OS no firmware no boot .

Of course Samsung gives updates to rooted devices... your friend may have a completely custom ROM (e.g. Omega or Wanamlite) which, of course, has it's own updates and no longer uses Samsung update service.
OTA Updates require a recent version of CWM and CF-Root, but are supposed to work in these.
Kies (tethered to the computer) updates work regardless of which Root-method is used.
Odin (manual updates) with a firmware from samfirmware.com will work in any condition
Clean unrooting is only required when you want to send it in for warranty and the phone still works.
Of course you'll have to re-root after updates unless there is a RootKeeper app (I dont use stock, so I don't know about that)
What are you guys talking about? Chainfire 3d was able to make tegra2 games work but tegra 3 is not possible on an s3.

Yes you do void the warranty and it is Sony. Sony are not so willing on the open source... You could get caught by their naughty firmware update or I dunno.. Have the whole Anonymous crew in your phone.... Seriously, if you ask yourself if you should root then you shouldn't. You will know when you will want to root if you need to.

We don't know yet how Sony will manage this phone. You better wait some time to see problems other people are gonna e patience modifying Sony's new phone. This is Sony after all, they always hated mods on their products.

With rooting you can run LuckyPatcher and to remove the Google ads or to review the license. Of course is better to root your phone,:good:
Just so u know, i'm from india Hyderabad 2 b exact. I rooted my Neo V and Pro both. I took my Neo V 2 times for warranty and Pro once. I just unrooted them and gave it to them. No probs at all. And in here they dont even check. The worker told that to me himself. Just make sure u have original Bill of purchase.

hahaha I love that bit of your signature .... you know what Its funny how some of i9300 users hate us talking about how the i9305 is better then the i9300 in a few different ways, they get so angry and envious it makes me laugh. Idiots
The only thing they can come up with is ohh ohh well that device doesnt have as much support! well i guess they are right for now but Id really like to prove them wrong so come on guys lets try port as much as we can over haha and the more users we have the more support will get, so if more people get enticed to get this device because they starting to see the dev support is growing... well the quicker the support will grow
But anyway like you said my stock rom runs smoother then my favourite tweaked up nandroid i had on my I9300, which was Foxhound rom haha.
And right now I am close to tweaking my rom as close to that... so just imagine how smooth its running now
Do you guys have your devices rooted sucessfully w CF root? bc all i really need is root. we are working on porting a (edit) heavily tweaked v of cm10 currently

Rooting a Galaxy SIII is MUCH easier than rooting a phone with their 190 step htc-ish root...i bought my siii 7 months ago and was my first android phone, and read 2 or 3 tutorials and rooted it, easier than a jailbreak
Best regards

If you don't know what you're doing, then no.
Well, ask yourself what you would need root for. If you root, you will be sucked into the depths of the rom flashing vortex, and that's a one-way journey. Trust me on that one, mate. I tried rolling unrooted stock and lasted but a few hours of that eternal torment.
Thanks

Yeah, rooting takes literally only 3 seconds once you've set up working drivers, and have odin up and running.
Make sure you read the instructions carefully when rooting so you won't make any mistakes

Root it, overclock CPU to 3GHz, undervolt it to 0.1V and then cry here that phone became unstable.
RLY?
If you are even asking the question if you should root - DO NOT DO IT as it is OBVIOUS that you do NOT know WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

Galaxy Star Trios?

While looking up Android phones for a friend living in Brazil (land of the eternal Galaxy Y) to buy, I ran into what seems to be a rather unique variant of the Star Duos.
I don't have enough posts to give a link to their website, but it appears to be a triple-SIM(!) version of the S5282 Galaxy Star Duos, the S5283 Galaxy Star Trios. Runs JB 4.1 with Samsung's app to automatically route calls through the right carrier's SIM.
I'm curious as to whether it exists somewhere else, like, say, India? Did somebody here ever manage to get one? I wonder if it uses the same Mediatek hardware GooPhone/LG used in their triple-SIM phones?
It does indeed exists in India as well. I am currently looking for a solution to root this particular phone. No luck yet. It does have a serious problem regarding the internal memory, I mean, It runs out of space very quick and doesn't give you an option to move apps to external sdcard. Please, if you bump into something, let me know.
Many thanks,
Tirso - from Brazil
