So i looked up a few ROMS from the sticky'd post on this forum and I am trying to decide which one is for me. Some provide a better description than others but at the end of the day I cannot figure out what I am really gaining and what I am losing.
I have a basic understanding of ROMs (or firmware or whatever people want to call them), but what it comes down to is a new operating system. My biggest question is what will I be losing? Right now my Nexus 10 is rooted but running google's standard os.What if I were to install Cyanogenmod 10 or any of the other roms. How does this affect my apps.
I have titanium back up installed so I can just back up all my apps and settings, but what user experience do I lose versus what is pre installed? How does Titanium back up work?
I know for cyanogenmod it says that there is no pre installed google related things. So I am assuming you will not be asked to set up your google account/wifi/language all that usual stuff google asks of you when you newly flash the memory, but what else do I lose?
Do some apps not work?
Does it mean I just simply have to reinstall everything?
Sorry I know this is a lot, but I am just questioning whether flashing a new rom is really worth it or is it intended more for older devices that do not receive the support of new firmware updates.
Newer ROM's and Kernels usually have more updated fixes and performance increases in comparison to stock. For example, franco.Kernel has a different throttling code, which helps out very nicely (goes to 1GHz in 1 step if the device is hot, and then down to 700MHz if it gets even hotter; no memory downclocking). Stock would downclock the CPU in increments of 100MHz, then spike it back to 1.7GHz, on top of also downing the clocks for GPU and memory. The difference in throttling can easily be seen in some high-end games like NFS:MW, which would slideshow on stock because of the aggressive throttling. franco.Kernel also has some fixes for the graphics and an updated WiFi driver.
But then again, what I just mentioned is mostly in relation to the kernel lol... I currently use rasbeanjelly because I like the dark theming (other ROM's have theming support though), but mostly because it's a stripped down AOSP build, that is very responsive I used to use CM10.1 nightlies before mostly because I liked being up-to-date (and nightlies come once a day with updates).

1. Like you said you have titanium back up installed, so as long as you backup all your user apps before flashing your apps, they will not be effected. (I have no clue how titanium backup works but it does)
2.Because of (I think copy rights) no ASOP will come with google apps ( Like google maps) but each ROM thread will direct you to a GAPPS download (which stands for Goggle APPS). You will just need to flash that ZIP after you flash your rom and BOOM you have all your google apps. You can still log into your google account at the startup, which has all your saved wifi's all your apps that you purchased on the PLAY store, all info in the calendar, etc. All in all you will lose virtual nothing after you restore your apps via titanium backup
3. Will you have to re install everything. Short answer yes, long answer no. After you restore via titanium backup, your apps will be just like they were before you flashed your new shiny ROM. But you will have to reorganize your homescreen, and redo your settings.
4. What will you gain? Well that all depends on what ROM you decided to go with it. That's what so great about ROMS and the Developers here, they provide you with so many different features. Like the guy above said, a new kernel can help with lag issues, or a new ROM can actually give you a tablet UI. Some of the benefits will be "under the hood" and you might not even notice them. There are many different features ( I recommond trying all the ROMS!)
5. I never had an User app not work because of a ROM
If you have anymore questions just ask!
(If I got anything wrong on here please correct me!)
For homescreens

Or you could use Nova launcher and just restore your backed up homescreens and settings.
Paranoidandroid to fix the dumb center buttons and move it back to the sides
That alone is worth an aftermarket rom

I don't use a RAZR, a friend of mine does.
Since he updated this past fall OTA, some of his apps are hidden.
He's NOT a dev and not interested in rooting - so far.
Tried factory reset and the ROM still hides key apps from the app drawer AND from homescreen(s) i.e. no browser(!?!!) AND from app management list.
I installed for him MIUI home launcher so that we could verify that the apps are still there.
(MIUI launcher does not have an app drawer, and shows all apps that are available on the device within the homescreens.)
...and all the "hidden" apps are there, just not while using the stock "Android home" launcher.
He's had no luck with Fido on this and wondering whether anyone else has this phantom app issue.
I'm assuming it's a corrupt OTA download but why ONLY the stock launcher affected? (fluke)
Not expecting too many here to still be using the stock Fido ROM but just putting it out there to help shed some light on what's going on.
What I have to say about this ROM is not much good. LOL No disrespect intended towards anyone who may have worked on this.
Thanks in advance
Hangouts with sms is great along with the other updated apps, but damn I love the Google Experience launcher. Way less options than nova or apex, but the always-on hotword detection on homescreens is great. Just wondering if anyone else here is trying them out?

i think i installed 90% of them, so far so good. i cant wait for our phone to have it.
Apparently CM will continue to focus on 4.3 builds, so I don't expect a CM11 anytime soon. Knowing our luck with this device, we'll probably have issues with kit kat builds anyway. Still, the launcher and hangouts are pretty badass. It's just a shame there's no official support for icon packs with stock launchers. I have to use an xposed module to use my icon pack of choice on this new launcher and I sometimes feel like it slightly slows the device down.

They're over seas right now at the Oppo factory. Steve is normally the one that merges the new source. Give it a few months, well see test builds.

I had most of the 4.4 .APKs (including the launcher and Google Now) installed on my cm10.2 build for the past day or so, but today I experienced the crash/bootloop scenario that's been plaguing the nightly builds lately; after a forced reboot, all the 4.4 apps were gone, and since I had frozen Trebuchet in TiBU, I was without a launcher and had to restore a NAND backup. Was I supposed to lock all the 4.4 apps into the system folder or something?

I don't know why they would disappear but you could have enabled trebuchet without restoring. You could have accessed the settings through quick settings, went to the apps section, found trebuchet and hit enable. Also, there's no reason to freeze it. Once you switch to a different launcher and reboot, none of your other installed launchers will run. Just for future reference.

Settings was even crashing upon opening; it was incredibly odd. As for the freezing, I and many others who installed the 4.4 launcher were experiencing the default launcher setting not sticking even after setting it to the 4.4 launcher; freezing Trebuchet (the only other one I had installed) fixed this. But that obviously didn't work out so well for me...
Which thread are you getting the apk files from?
Anyone installed the new launcher from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2506488

I browse /r/Android on reddit often, and people were going nuts posting links to all the apks. I'm sure they're all over the internet by now.
But yes, that's the launcher I'm running. It's so limited in features compared to others, but it really does everything I need. Some people don't seem to like the google now to the left of the main homescreen, but I'm digging it.
I'm really hoping for kit kat to make it's way to our device though. I saw there's a CM11 branch, but who knows what kind of code needs updating and/or compatibility issues.
Do you need to be rooted to do this I keep getting a parsing error

Checking it out myself, thanks to your thread, however after installing the apks I somehow seem to have broken the "okay Google" feature. Google search updated itself and all after installation but even if I choose search manually now it still won't respond to the command.
Your right tho, the launcher is simple but works well. The only thing I don't care for is the constant Google search box on the home screen especially when all you have to do is say the command and it goes straight there.

CM11 Alpha for the INC4G
You've got to check out Cyanogenmod 11 for our device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552150 I had to flash the updated Recovery but I have had no issues so far. There's a fair bit in 4.4 that you don't get from the base Kit Kat apps that you can install for 4.1 and up.
CM 11 nightly
I've been using the nightly from 12-26 and it is 4.4.2 I have had no issues at all, and it seems to be running smooth. Battery is draining pretty well, but it does in any rom due to the lack of signal from my house. I'm at the office now, running wifi and it seems to be draining less.
Hello,
I have been using Touchwiz for quite a while now, but the lag and stuttering are completely annoying. I want to try CyanogenMod 10.2 but I am concerned about its security? Does it have any security issues which might cause data stealing?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
CyanogenMod is as secure as the official firmware and may even have better/faster security updates. It is rooted which means apps can have more access to the system files than your current firmware with touchwiz, which is why they say rooted phones can be less secure. When any program asks for root/better access to your phone a superuser program comes up where you can allow or deny access, so the reality is it it not really insecure,
that cbsesa
I'd say its safe haven't had any problems as of yet. Add that to the fact of better performance I'd say go for it. The only two things I miss on a Sammy ROM is the camera application and the FM radio
Since this is brand new device and most of us were hoping for it to have Marshmallow (I know I was) we are lucky that we can root because there are super folks on XDA. I personally root so I can change permissions for stuff (like why does my calculator app need access to my contacts) and minimize apps which boot at startup without my permission; something that Marshmallow promises to correct. That being said apps sometimes don't like that we root the phone. So I was wondering what apps (stock included) that everyone has come across not working once your phone was rooted. If we see what's an issue there might be a solution out there. Last I heard Android M won't be out for our phone till some time in 2016
