Is CyanogenMod 10.2 safe ? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have been using Touchwiz for quite a while now, but the lag and stuttering are completely annoying. I want to try CyanogenMod 10.2 but I am concerned about its security? Does it have any security issues which might cause data stealing?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

CyanogenMod is as secure as the official firmware and may even have better/faster security updates. It is rooted which means apps can have more access to the system files than your current firmware with touchwiz, which is why they say rooted phones can be less secure. When any program asks for root/better access to your phone a superuser program comes up where you can allow or deny access, so the reality is it it not really insecure,

that cbsesa
I'd say its safe haven't had any problems as of yet. Add that to the fact of better performance I'd say go for it. The only two things I miss on a Sammy ROM is the camera application and the FM radio

My SG2 constantly freezes with 'the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped'

I have been using Android phones for three years.

I hope that is all the model information needed. I am afraid i can't answer the questions....
- What rom you are using? -and- What kernel are you using?
- Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
- Have you changed DPI? If yes, to what?
Because I dont understand them. I am no geek and just expect to turn a phone on use it and then off.
Now for my problem:
This problem seemed to start, or certainly got worse, after doing the update to ICS about 4 weeks ago. Now no process can be done smoothly on my phone without a temporary freeze and the phrase, 'Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped' appearing and the screen freezing until I press OK.
I have trawled this site and others to find a solution and although I see it probably has something to do with google syncronisation I don't understand the solutions as explained. I have a very low level, functional, understanding of my phone and no real knowledge of its OpSys. I certainly DONT want to Root it. Sounds scary.
Simple 123 step guide to a solution in none geekish language would be enormously helpful.
Hi,its as simple as this
1.go back to gb
2.stay where you are
3.root the phone
I would say that my phone and my wifes worked better on gb.
Unfortunately you cant do all that much if you arent rooted.

You may try wipe cache / factory reset. Usually helps with problems caused by upgrade from GB to ICS.

After update from gingerbread to ICS the following steps are very important:
1. Factory reset your phone (if you have already done this once, you can skip this step)
2. Open settings, go to apps, then all applications tab.
3. force stop then disable every system app you don't use.
If you are not sure about any of them, ask me, I will guide you.
* don't disable message app, contacts and market.
4. Open market, now called Google play, update all your apps.
This step is necessary to ensure proper app compatibility.
Good luck

Last time you updated your ROM, did you access Recovery Mode and do a Full Wipe by "Clear Data/Factory Reset > Wipe Cache > Reboot"
Regardless of what your told or what you read.. you should do this for every update or flash.. whether its 236 to 403 or even 404 to 404 bug fixes.. its the only way to be sure.. then install/update your apps again from Market.
Try the above first, Make sure you back up all your data first.. SMS, Call Logs, Photos.. but if the above doesnt work.. Ide go back to GB and start smiling again .
My 2 cents ....
Like those here, I got sucked into the newer is better trap and settled for 404 because I just got used to it, but, like you, I was having crashes and issues to the point of annoyance so Ive recently went back to 236 GB from LPT and what a difference, faster, more responsive, slicker, screen is brighter on 20% than it is on 40% under ICS and battery lasts an extra 4 - 6 hours. Im currently on XWLA4 and its great.
But the worst of it all for me, under ICS, when you access Task Manager under TouchWiz or Go Launcher, its running about 25 apps in the background that you dont even know about or have ever used.. whereas, GB runs about 12, talk about battery drain.
Ive flashed about 6 ICS builds and none of them have been as goiod as GB, so IMO, I think Samsung just botched up a workable ICS, so we S2 users wouldnt feel left out when the S3 arrived, but IMO its one of the most buggy, bloat filled messy OS's I ever used, I reckon thats why theres dozens of Custom ROMs built on ICS, because the default Stock ones are a a mess and uncle Sammy cant be bothered to fix it because the S2 is obselete now, samsung only have eyes for the S3 now..
Im not holding my breath for a decent working JB either. Like all devs.. once they move on, thats it.. but for me, my next phone will be an HTC.
Anyway, Theres tons of posts on XDA to help you go back to GB or clear the data through Recovery,
Good luck.
Jokesy
Have gone through my Apps as suggested disabling all the programme I do not use - a bit of guess work as so many are not ones I recognise. Now when i try to use google play store - nothing happens.......I must have disabled something vital. I suppose I need to start going back through the applications and enabling them until the google play store works?
OK been through and started enabling disabled apps and slowly functionality is coming back. As yet not nasty message telling me "the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped". Will continue and report back.
As for rooting and going back to GB seems to me to be something Samsung should not be expecting its customers to do. Why can't the phone work as promised on sale?
Thanks for all those who have given advice - just not clear to me what the advantages of rooting a phone are?

Lemme try to put this as simple as possible (I'm a layman too )
When you purchase an android smartphone, no matter what brand, the company puts certain restrictions to its functionality. They restrict the hardware capabilities and stuff in a bunch of bloatware apps that most of us find useless. These bloatware apps can also slow down our phones. So basically if you take a broad look at the scenario, the company restricts (owns) our phones even after we've paid top dollar for them.
Now coming to the pros of rooting.
1. You become the master of your phone. As soon as you root you get "Super User" access. ( just the term makes you feel a lil more special )
2. You can remove all the bloatware that comes pre installed with your phone.
3. You can use a custom ROM and kernel that are for certain much more efficient than the stock ROM and kernel.
4. You get to decide how your hardware should work- overclock the CPU to squeeze out more performance from the beast or underclock it so that the battery lasts longer.
So that should give you a brief idea on why you should root.
I too had the same problem you are facing right now when I moved from GB to ICS. Cursed Samsung in so many tongues! I then rooted my phone, put in a custom ROM and kernel and I've been a happy man since. I too was apprehensive about rooting but now I'm certain whatever phone I buy next, its gonna be rooted as soon as its outta the box

Thanks a lot for the more simple explanation. I haven't gone down the rooted toot as yet but am now sorely tempted. In fact since following Jessie adice the freezing has stopped. I already use two batteries which get me through the average day of use........
When one 'roots' do you re-instal ICS and get the same access to stuff like Swype?

Rooting doesn't reinstall ICS, rooting just gives you the privilege to install a custom ICS ROM thereby replacing your stock ICS ROM. I don't know if all ICS ROMs support stuff like Swype but most do. Even if it doesn't come bundled with the ROM you can just download and install the app.
If you are looking for a ICS ROM with most of the Samsung apps like Email, Social Hub, Swype etc all bundled with ROM then you could try out the ROM that I'm using right now ( refer to my signature). It's basically the stock ROM look and feel with even most of the Samsung apps present minus the bloatware.

[help/question] JB security apps

Hi all,
I am using one of the Alpha JB builds on my phone (fantastic btw), but I am not seeing any security software that seems to work on JB yet. I have in the past used LBE Guard to stop apps that want access to stuff I don't want them to access, but this wont run on JB. Droidwall seems to be working but would like something that deals with permissions as well.
Has anybody found security apps working on JB or have any info on apps that are being developed for JB.
Yes I know I must wait for developers to get these apps on to JB or I should move back to ICS. But if anybody has any info on this I would be very interested.
Thanks to all contributors here, this really is an amazing place. Keep up the good work
You can try LBE Security Manager, it should be a successor of LBE Guard. I'm using it on JB with no problems

What exactly will flashing a new ROM do to the user experience?

So i looked up a few ROMS from the sticky'd post on this forum and I am trying to decide which one is for me. Some provide a better description than others but at the end of the day I cannot figure out what I am really gaining and what I am losing.
I have a basic understanding of ROMs (or firmware or whatever people want to call them), but what it comes down to is a new operating system. My biggest question is what will I be losing? Right now my Nexus 10 is rooted but running google's standard os.What if I were to install Cyanogenmod 10 or any of the other roms. How does this affect my apps.
I have titanium back up installed so I can just back up all my apps and settings, but what user experience do I lose versus what is pre installed? How does Titanium back up work?
I know for cyanogenmod it says that there is no pre installed google related things. So I am assuming you will not be asked to set up your google account/wifi/language all that usual stuff google asks of you when you newly flash the memory, but what else do I lose?
Do some apps not work?
Does it mean I just simply have to reinstall everything?
Sorry I know this is a lot, but I am just questioning whether flashing a new rom is really worth it or is it intended more for older devices that do not receive the support of new firmware updates.
Newer ROM's and Kernels usually have more updated fixes and performance increases in comparison to stock. For example, franco.Kernel has a different throttling code, which helps out very nicely (goes to 1GHz in 1 step if the device is hot, and then down to 700MHz if it gets even hotter; no memory downclocking). Stock would downclock the CPU in increments of 100MHz, then spike it back to 1.7GHz, on top of also downing the clocks for GPU and memory. The difference in throttling can easily be seen in some high-end games like NFS:MW, which would slideshow on stock because of the aggressive throttling. franco.Kernel also has some fixes for the graphics and an updated WiFi driver.
But then again, what I just mentioned is mostly in relation to the kernel lol... I currently use rasbeanjelly because I like the dark theming (other ROM's have theming support though), but mostly because it's a stripped down AOSP build, that is very responsive I used to use CM10.1 nightlies before mostly because I liked being up-to-date (and nightlies come once a day with updates).

1. Like you said you have titanium back up installed, so as long as you backup all your user apps before flashing your apps, they will not be effected. (I have no clue how titanium backup works but it does)
2.Because of (I think copy rights) no ASOP will come with google apps ( Like google maps) but each ROM thread will direct you to a GAPPS download (which stands for Goggle APPS). You will just need to flash that ZIP after you flash your rom and BOOM you have all your google apps. You can still log into your google account at the startup, which has all your saved wifi's all your apps that you purchased on the PLAY store, all info in the calendar, etc. All in all you will lose virtual nothing after you restore your apps via titanium backup
3. Will you have to re install everything. Short answer yes, long answer no. After you restore via titanium backup, your apps will be just like they were before you flashed your new shiny ROM. But you will have to reorganize your homescreen, and redo your settings.
4. What will you gain? Well that all depends on what ROM you decided to go with it. That's what so great about ROMS and the Developers here, they provide you with so many different features. Like the guy above said, a new kernel can help with lag issues, or a new ROM can actually give you a tablet UI. Some of the benefits will be "under the hood" and you might not even notice them. There are many different features ( I recommond trying all the ROMS!)
5. I never had an User app not work because of a ROM
If you have anymore questions just ask!
(If I got anything wrong on here please correct me!)

[Q] Can you share your experience with me?

I never installed a custom ROM, so before I start my own adventure I'd like to ask if you guys would like to share your experience with me.
My goal would be to find a clean and bloatware free alternative. I love how nice and smooth some of my Nexus devices work and would be cool to see such a thing running on the Razr Maxx too, with all that battery power. I'm happy with the design and look of the stock ROM so I am not looking for any fancy changes, just something like Stock ROM without any unncessary packages.
I hope such a thing exists and that it might somehow boost the battery usage efficiency, otherwise I guess I'll just keep on going with root and freeze anything I don't like.
Some info on my device:
System version - 982.124.14.XT910.Retail.en.EU
Model number - XT910
Android version - 4.1.2
Baseband version - U_04.10.00R

Thanks, slimkat will be my first attempt then.
For a start I'll start following what this guy here says: link
So far I tried:
Cyanogenmod
cm-10.1.2-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-10.1.3-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-11-20140319-NIGHTLY-umts_spyder - didn't quite like it
Slim Jelly Bean
Slim-umts_spyder-4.3.build.2.2-UNOFFICIAL-20131119-1959 - it only has nova launcher as default display manager
So in a moment I'll try out MoKee
Anyway, thanks for the initial input everyone. At least now I started discovering various roms.
Any custom rom has problems, only stock is almost perfect on stability but there is a lot of options and customizations not available. Some errors take more time to appear. Everyone has different interests and hardware so you might never suffer some bugs.
If aosp keyboard is not working for you, there is options like swype (included in stock but for cm you have to buy it. Thought it has upgrades that can be worthy like dragon speaking) or swiftkey.
Stock rom without carrier bloat... only Brazil retail.
Looking for stock Heavily debloated... Search for de-blur ones. My advice here would be to try to deblur by your own by reading a de-blur list and removing one by one. Some roms out there can be deblurred more than you would like.
Interesting stock ROM? China ROM (i believe current version is 400-430) has a unique feature... Call recording without having to mess with configurations, system files etc.... and very nice stability and battery compared to other stock options. Read its thread thoroughly since installing it is not so easy due to region restrictions (read about CID) and something called CDT.bin that can get you unable to revert to other ROMs or even use your phone again depending on circumstances (CDT.bin problem is not exclusive to China ROM).
Currently using slimkat, had cyanfox before. I Spend at least a day with current rom before installing jbx since flashing another kernel can bring new bugs that are not caused by current rom. (Thought normally jbx gives a big improvement on speed and other things sometimes it has bugs).

It is a bad idea to freeze any system apps that aren't on the deblur list if you don't kow what you are doing. Everything he has there is safe to freeze, and some of their processes can be handled better by other apps anyways.
Regardless welders list is EXAMPLE ONLY! If you are looking to debloat your stock ROM, take angrist's advice and find/read the debloat(deblur) list for Razr, and freeze processes that you feel you don't need one at a time. Use the phone a little bit and see if it causes you issues, then move to the next.

Hmm. I usually test out around 28-29k. Wonder what will happen with LP.

I had FoxFi installed and configured before updating. Still works just fine.
After struggling to get my system cleaned up enough to take the OTA, I finally upgraded today. Had root and Xposed primarily for cosmetic reasons. So far no regrets. It was a little sluggish for most of the day but seems to have settled in nicely. No real issues other than initially having trouble updating Google Play Services. The Play store simply didn't want to finish the download, but eventually it did. Also the phone was running hot for much of the day and battery life wasn't great, but I was also in some poor service areas. I'll report back if it continues.
Other than that, I'm loving it. Might wait a few more months before getting a new phone now, even though my contract is up in June.
5 is smooth, but the phone runs very hot. This is with our without location turned on.

I am running stock rooted lollipop on MDK bootloader. Performance is good so far better than on KitKat.
First time poster. Long time browser.
Just took the OTA. Formerly rooted on KK. Was a little laggy at first but has gotten better. I like the look. Contract is up in a month and figured whatever I get next will have it anyways so I might as well see what it's all about.
I flashed the rooted oc1 from nc5 and WOW
touchwiz lag is no longer a thing. Samsung finally let you access the camera from a secure lock screen. pattern lock doesn't lag anymore. you don't have to jump through hoops to change your wallpaper for home and lock screens. messages actually send.
on top of that, everything is stupid fast. this is the best thing Verizon and Samsung have ever done, and at this point the galaxy s6 doesn't seem so bad.
Don't remember which update removed SD card write privileges, but they appear to be back. I can once again use ES File Explorer to copy music/pictures to my SD card (running stock, unrooted).
Win some lose some, it looks like some available actions using the Secure Settings app (usually paired w/ Tasker) have been stripped away: toggling data on/off now requires root.
Everything seems smoother, noticeably swype.
Not really digging the new notification cards that cover the top section of the screen and sit for maybe a whole 10 seconds before going away.... are they bothering anyone else?

The SD card functionality isn't fully there. Multiple apps (eg ttorrent) still can't write to the SD card. I was able to do it under Kit Kat after installing an app to restore that function. Is anyone else experiencinthe this? If so, is there a fix coming (or an internal setting I am missing)?

About 10 minutes ago, I ran a Play Store app called SDFix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and it fixed my SD Card write problem. App says it's for KitKat but it works on Lollipop.
