Hallo, I am a flash addict, yes I admit
the problem is that every rom I "test" have pros and cons,
so I'm wandering, how can I make one of mine?
not from sources (just yet) but lets say take an original aosp or samsung
and add different apks and patches
I tried to delete / replace apks like email, callendar etc in a running rom
and most of the times I get FC and non working apps.
Any help of what to read and how to start would be much appreciated!
and who knows, maybe in some time you test my releases
Find a ROM which lets you cook your own version.
And learn to edit things like the build.prop and system files.

I like your interest in developing your own ROM.
As a beginner, you will have to start with android kitchen, it makes ROM development a breeze.
Visit here to learn more: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227549
Most of the Rom developers started with, some are even still using kitchen to cook their own Roms.
You will also find links to useful tutorials on that page.

Try compiling from source. Using the ROM kitchen is not really development. Problem is it does everything for you so you won't learn everything.

I disagree with you.
I started with ROM kitchen, then started modding, then theming and now I can compile from source.
Everybody has got to start from somewhere.
Moreso, if you read his post well, he clearly said, "how can I make one of mine? not from sources (just yet) but lets say take an original aosp or Samsung"
One step at a time bro, that's the way to proper development in life.

More like cooking than developing but yea you are right everyone must start from somewhere, nothing wrong with modding stock ROMs to make them better. That's the whole aim I guess. It is very easy to download the source and its much easier to understand the code before its compiled for someone who has no experience with Java or anything.
Maybe extract the system and boot from a stock Samsung ROM and go from there as above.

Some points to note about the files...
All 3 files are completely stock and unedited
This build is a dev build, not a release build
This build is from a test Galaxy Nexus
This build is not odexed!
I know a lot of people are hacking up ports for other devices, so hopefully the non-odexed nature of this release together with the fact it includes the boot and recovery images will help make that happen.
All I ask is that you don't mirror the files elsewhere, that you link back to this topic rather than deeplinking the files and that if you use them you credit the source. So here they are...

to start is to make it to boot, using the changes in init.rc (however this is not nessesary as our boot.img already seems to have these, but needs to be edited a bit if i aint wrong,
then create boot.img
go for libs, try edit em to make it work for our armv6, boot and it should be starting
however editing libs takes good time,
i still wonder how Honeycomb were ported and not ics

This is a continuation of my previous ShishirROM series of ROMS that started out on Gingerbread 2.3.4, and have evolved and expanded to today, where the latest version of ShishirROM is based off of XWLPG 4.0.3. Aberration is built completely independent of those and the only resemblance to my old ROMs is the dialer, which was an original creation anyways, but at it's heart, it's the next step. The ROM focuses on speed and smoothness and battery life. It incorporates common-sense fixes and ground-breaking features as well as third-party applications that bring something new to the table every time you use them. The ROM was inspired by the old Samsung gingerbread ROMS -- they were stable, fast, and just worked. This ROM manages to bring the same sort of feel back to the table while maintaining an updated look similar to the Galaxy S3 series of phones, and Android's resident Holo design. The Aberration Settings application is an extension of this ROM that lets you change some deeper settings, such as using Lidroid's beautiful 14 Notification Widget Mod instead of the default themed widgets, as well as provide an easier way for users to update to the latest version of Aberration, no matter which model of the Galaxy S2 they're running. This ROM aims to be the ONE ROM that supports every Galaxy S2 phone, and brings them on par with the super-phones coming out later this year. It's an update away from giving your phone four cores, two gigs of RAM, and a 4.8" SAMOLED HD display.
Features:
ODEXED (for smoothness)
Based on XWLPM
Siyah
Aberration Settings app
Lidroid 14 Quick Toggles

Opensource Sensors library (more accurate and faster)

I built this ROM directly from XXLPM stock, not ported it from another unrelated device, sorry if that was unclear. The Galaxy S2 i777 and Galaxy S2 i9100 are EXTREMELY alike, so alike in fact that about five files hold the changes between them. No actual porting was done.
And I can't provide a link to the original since I made this, and this is the original lol. It's just a Stock Samsung ROM based off of 4.0.4 LPM with a few tweaks and fixes thrown in.
EDIT: Let me try and be more clear: this ROM was built off of XXLPM. It was initially tested on the i777 because that happens to be the device I have, but the development of the ROM was exactly the same for both versions. The i777 and i9100 versions are very different. Different modems, kernels, libs, etc. This ROM truly was built for both devices in mind, therefore it isn't a port.
EDIT2: Moved

What he means is that what special features or original features does the rom have in order for it to stay in the original development for example paranoidandroid, it has the capability of changing per app dpi, from phone ui to a tablet ui etc. Jkay framework which can customize almost everything from the lockscreen to the notification bar. Because if it is just a cooked rom with some features that has been gotten from other devs, it should belong to android development. But i may be wrong, maybe you have something special in the settings you mention on the OP. Good luck on your rom bdw.
Cheers!

Hello,
I wanted to try your rom, so i downloaded the i9100 zip and followed the installation steps and i got installation completed without any problems.
Then i choosed to reboot. The screen showed the Siyah logo, then the phone gave me a sound... and then nothing. Black screen. I have tried again and again but the same result. Maybe i am doing something wrong.
Thanks

What kind of a rude person are you ? This is no way to post something on a thread
Anybody else facing this issue. Any suggestions for this issue.
For everyone facing the black screen issue, first make sure you're running the i9100 version, and confirm that you wiped data before installing, then try flashing another i9100 kernel before you boot up for the first time. It sounds like the kernel didn't get flashed for some reason. I'll have to do some more digging. If anyone can grab a logcat then i'd appreciate it, although I don't know if the Log service got started after the Siyah screen.
If it still doesn't work, it may not have gotten installed properly. Try going into mounts/storage in CWM and wipe /system, manually do a factory reset/wipe data, and wipe cache as well. That should get everything.
EDIT: If you're getting the sound after boot, that just means the boot animation isn't showing for some reason. Give it five minutes and see if the phone boots up. If so then I'll upload a fix for this when someone confirms that's the issue.

i do but i am not sure does compling mean making a rom?
Nono...see in terms of android.
Decompiling= breaking some files into many parts
Compiling=Joining the broken parts to get back the original file back.
Its usually associated with Decompiling and Compiling apk files to mod them or stuffs.
Dont worry we all were "noobs" once

It's not too different from the usual programming definition of compiling. When you write a programme, you write it in a higher language that reads almost like English (unless if you are a nut case/genius who likes coding in assembly). However, for a computer (in this case your phone) to run it you have to translate the programme into machine readable language first. This translation process is called compiling.

I am afraid that is not the correct definition of compiling. The apk file is just a zip file of media files and code. When you break apart an apk file all that you are doing is just unzipping. The codes are still inaccessible. To be able to read them humanly you need to decompile the codes, which is usually impossible. That is why people need to post source codes.
Compiling takes quite a bit of computing power and can take hours if your code is long. Packaging and signing an apk? Not si much.

here's the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598713
so what do u think?
That guide was for porting roms made for other devices using roms that already exist for your device. For example, someone has already made a cm7 rom for your device, but you want a miui rom. Since miui is based on cm7, you can use the guide to create a miui rom for your device. However, if nobody has made a cm7 rom for your device, you cannot use that guide to port miui rom.
If you read the guide carefully, it's just a while load of copy and paste work, hence not compiling. The guide teaches you to take advantage of existing work done by other people instead of starting from the scratch, but it can't teach you to build a rom from scratch.

i totally agree with you but in the start of the post the guy says "Android Source | Compile GB | Compile ICS | Compile JB ~ Thanks dastin1015 |- Building/Compiling - Durations" what does that mean? will the link to the tut help me make a gingerbread for my ics based device??
and last advice will porting any roms to my device has any threat to it like bricking???
I took a look at those links. The first link is simply what it says - the basic source code for Android. The other compile links contain instructions on how to compile the source code into roms. They do not teach you how to write the source code for different devices, which is the most difficult part of porting a rom. Anyone can learn to compile a rom from pre written codes. It's the writing part that matters. You need to find the drivers and other proprietary codes for your device.
The guides can help you get started on making a gingerbread rom, but it won't fix the hundreds of bugs you are sure to encounter.
As for bricking, there's always going to a chance that flashing a rom might brick your device.

thaknz a lot for ur help
To sum up in basic words, compiling is turning a code from a high language into machine code so the computer can read it.
Also , if you din't know what is compiling i don't think you should be making roms
I have the ZTE Avail 2 (aka Z992) (and it sucks, considering it's a $70 phone, buying a new one isn't an option because I just built a computer). It hasn't had an update since 4.1.1 and it's very slow, (usually have only ~50mb of ram free when just sitting at launcher) even with all of the tricks to speed it up (greenfiy, cleaner, etc) and on top of that, it's loaded with features that ZTE put in that suck. So after searching and searching for a custom ROM with support for my phone, I can confirm there is zero. I looked at the rom dev tutorial - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272270 and the kitchen program doesn't support my phone either. Does that mean I'm screwed? If there's a way to make a rom compatible other than the android kitchen or straight up learning to program, please tell me. I'm willing to learn anything that isn't hugely time consuming. Thanks for any replies.

No, you are not. You can try many other porting tutorials around the web. I found a list of phones similar to yours, might come in handy.
In fact, since your are trying to "port" ROMs, just think about the fact that "where did those ROMs come from?" Those ROMs were built from source code. The Android project is open source and if you are feeling adventurous, you can just grab the source code and compile it yourself for your device. It might be very easy or very tough, depending on your device. I would advise you to try to build Cyanogenmod 10.1 from source code. Check here and here.
And make sure to check this (must).
Cheers man! Trust me, trying to build Cyanogenmod from source will be a lot of fun!
Thank you! So I found CM for the xperia tipo, which was on the list of similar devices. I should use that one and change whatever needs to be changed, right?
Also, is it possible to do that for 4.4 stock? That may be a better idea if CM consumes too much ram

Oh, I didn't know that would work, thanks again! I have my rom modded like crazy though, tons of xposed modules and build.prop edits, also I uninstalled a lot of stock apps - I'm sure I could get the build.prop somewhere, but what about the other things? Do they matter at all?
Edit: after the backup I now have a ton of tars, a recovery.img, and a boot.img. I extracted all of the tars, now do I just put all of the folders from the tars in a folder with the imgs and that's my base rom?

Okay, I've come pretty far and I've made several flashable zips and fixed many errors, but there's one thing I can't figure out - the updater script doesn't work, and I realized it's because I was using the one from the original port, and I need the one for my phone, which I can't get from the cwm recovery. I really need the whole META-INF folder. Where can I get that?

l will try to squeeze in time to build two stock Lollipop roms for your Sprint note 3's. A stock odexed and a stock fully deodexed. BUT FYI... a fully deodexed LOLLIPOP framework is the only way to be able to do several popular mods for our phones, however deodexing the framework will defeat the purpose of ART. So it's your choice on this. You see, Lollipop uses oat files etc and most of the imporrtant odexes for several framework jar's are not individually odexed, they are hidden elsewhere in other framework files meaning you can't simply deodex an individual jar and expect to do a mod and put it in the rom. Not gonna happen. To properly run a deodexed framework you will want to fully deodex the entire framework in one fail swoop. Enough about that. I'll see what i can do to get you all a stock rom base or two.
Please, No PM's on time frame etc. I am already in touch with another member who will be your Note 3 rep concerning the stock rom bases. He will make himself known if and when he is ready. Thank you.
Thanks for the heads up , really looking forward to whatever comes out of kitchen
btw , my own preference would be a debloated rom , two variants may be , one insanely debloated with TW intact , other moderately debloated with TW intact.
odexed or not your choice
Thanks

My only job here will be to create a pure stock rom "base". Future custom and/or "debloated" roms, will be up to you friendly chef's, themers, etc. I'm only making the foundation so to say.
I've already gotten all of the rom files ready, I just have to build and make necessary modifications in a few areas. I'm doing a little at a time as time permits. Once I upload these base roms, you will have to ask your Note 3 dev's to build their own custom Lollipop roms using these base roms Just wanted to make this clear so everyone understands my role here. Thank you.

I've recruited someone to help spit out another build. Hopefully he will have it done very soon. I have my hands full with my own Note 4 rom project and testing fixes with a phone i dont have is dificult and time consuming. Ill hive my buddy anothet day or two and if he hadnt finished with a fresh build then i will pick it back up and finish for u guys.
