Original SE charger is rated at 5V 850mA, fast charge is not always good.

Can you explain why charging slower would affect the overall battery life?
Also, in that case would it be even better if you charged the phone from a usb port (like plugging it into your laptop) which often provides 100-500mA?

This is probably my misunderstanding, but when i read this post originally i thought it was some way to improve battery life as in prolonging the time it takes between needing to charge.. if that makes sense?
partly yes partly no, your link describes charging with higher voltage decreases battery life this is different because voltage is same but current different
example: 3 chargers, our battery is 800mAh in capacity.
5v 400mA - battery charged in 2 hours from 0% to 100% internal chemistry react normal - better absorbtion
5v 850mA - battery charged in little less than 1 hour internal battery chemistry can be little upset cos risen temperature in reaction
5v 8000mA - battery cant quickly absorb this current in chemistry and will propably explode/leak/burn within minutes/seconds

That works! I also tested with my brothers' JAGA(!!!) charger mod. 5003fb050040 (5v 450mA) and it was even better.

Just gonna review some of the accessories I have used and what i think about 'em
First up is the 3500mAH extended battery by HHI
This battery came in at a cost of $9.99 with free Shipping! It showed up with an 80% charge which is in the acceptable range of where they like to sit. The battery performs just as one would expect it too. I am currently running MeanRom, and can easily get 16-20 hours of use with some really heavy gaming. However I recently went on a vacation and wanted to run the battery through a couple different variations of "discharging". So with the phone in Airplane mode(no radios connected) and very little use i easily can get a week out of the phone without charging. Again this is without any radios on, not connecting to anything.The stock battery cant touch these numbers. i would be lucky to get a full day out of the stock battery with no gaming and normal use.I didn't do a sticker pull to run the numbers. So I'm taking HHI's word on the 3500mAH being just that.
To conclude on this battery the $10 investment turned out to be a good choice, although it might not be a seidio or something it does more than i expected it to do. I will continue to use this battery till I get rid of the phone. The battery can be found here.

I also bought some of the Galilio "2000mAH" batteries, I got 3 of them with a wall charger for $13.99 on ebay, as reviewed by many others.
This is my experience with them. So they showed up in the mail and upon opening them i discovered one of the batteries look like it got dropped or skipped accross the cement, im not sure what happened, but who is gonna put a messed up battery in their phone.. So i really only got 2 batteries. I brought it up to the seller he offered me $3.00 back, it wasn't worth my time even dealing with that any further at this point. Anyways the batteries Are nice little backup batteries i take with me on trips.They make for easy backup batteries. The batteries have been suspected to be somewhere along the lines of 1000-1200mAH. I would have to agree, even with no testing with any type of tool, besides my phone. They last a most couple of hours. The wall charger that came with them actually surprised me. Everyone was reporting that it may overcharge your stock battery, which can cause some issues. This charger(as pictured below) will charge the Galilio batteries to 100% with no problems. I put my stock HTC battery into the wall charger and with repeated attempts the charger will not charge the battery past 85% even when i left it on the wall charger for 2 days. I do believe that the stock HtC charger that came with the phone gives the batteries a "better" charge, but the wall charger seems to not charge the batteries past a safe range as everyone seems to be reporting as a possible issue. My issue is it doesn't charge it well enough.

The 85% is charge limit is what a cheap charger do,
The "charger" that come with the phone is simply a power supply, the charging circuit is actually "built in" to the phone. You can connect the OEM HTC charger/power supply into one of those cheap aftermarket dock that charge a 2nd battery and it will never charge the battery past 85% either.
To make it short and sweet
There's 2 stage of Li-ion charging
1) charge to 4.2v at constant current which is 85% when it first reach/near 4.2v
2) saturation charge, once the battery reach 4.2v, continue charging but at gradually reducing current until it reach about 3% of default charge current
Cheap charger have a simple/cheap circuit and cannot do stage 2 charging, where the charging circuit built into each phone would do stage 2 charging

Awesome!!! its well worth it!!
Well I bought the Galaxy S3 on the first day of the UK launch and depleted the battery to 0% then charged with the original 1 Amp charger from 0%. I had noticed that this takes a very very long time, around 8 hours. The battery life after charging however is substantial and very adequate.
On the second charge after depletion once again, I decided to use a Griffin 2.1 Amp charger which I had used to charge the hefty Galaxy note with. The Galaxy S3 charges at a much rapid rate and takes around 2-3 hours to reach 100% from 0%. However I have noticed that the battery life depletes a bit faster, Is this due to my imagination or is a 2.1 Amp charger not suitable for this phone as it was with the tablet-like Galaxy note.
Also note that I tried to charge my HTC one X with the 2.1 Amp charger and it charge very slowly, while the original HTC charger has a much lower ampage than 1 Amp
Hmm I have been using my galaxy s charger 0.5amp and it has been charging pretty slowly but seems to deplete faster.
I have been actively using for 50min on wifi now and 85% left. Which seems a bit quick for me. I will try charging with the standard 1amp tonight and see.

I measure my battery life by checking the screen on time just before the death of the charge which was 5 hours on the original charger, with the quick charger its 4 hours. My Galaxy note has no change in battery life weather you any ampere chargers. Also the general battery percentage seems to run low faster anyway on the galaxy s3 using the fast charger.

Just wondering, since the S2 had a limit of 650mA for charging, does this apply to the S3? You guys make it sound like it charges slow as well...
Galaxy s2 does charge very slow for me aswell. Compared to htc phones the Galaxy s 2 charges painfully slowly. Now I regularly use the 2 amp charger on my galaxy s3 and have seen a huge improvement in charging speeds. It charges at around 2% per minute and still lasts around 4 hours of screen time for a full charge.

I noticed that I can only charge fast using original charger. While charger with shorted usb data + & - (ie. htc 1A charger) will not activate fast charging.
You can verify by going into *#*#4636#*#*, Battery, using ori charger will show AC while HTC charger will show USB

Also from reading about the MHL to HDMI cable from older devices not wotking, it does in fact seem that Samsung have changed the microUSB pinouts (although my Nokia 1.2A charger shows AC in that battery "menu").
Mine charges from about 10% to full in about two and a half hours, using the charger provided in the box.
My s2 came with a 0.7amp charger and took about 2.5 hours. My s3 came with a 1amp charger and takes about the same. Charges to 80% in no time and then slows down for the later part of the charge

A battery isn't like a fuel tank which you simply fill up through the hose until it's full.
Due to physical and chemical reasons, a nearly-full battery takes a lot longer to fill by a certain percent since it simply can't store the energy quickly enough.
Additionally, deep-discharged batteries often start with a slower charging speed (and then cranked up) to keep the battery from dying too soon and/or not being able to reach full capacity.
is the Nokia 1.2A charger ok to use with the samsung G3 as i got one of these spare and would prefer use it if so as the usb is way to short to reach from my desk up and around the back.

Just to check with all of you, i've been told that it is best not to charge your phone or any other handheld device IF the battery is not at a really low rate, at least not till your device actually prompts you to charge. They were saying that this would cause the battery life to be shortened. But at times, I need to make sure that i have enough battery to last me for a few more hours before i knock off from work, i would just charge the phone (battery at 25-30%) even before it prompts me to. Is it alright to do that often?
2ndly, at times when i stream videos on my phone for many hours, the battery would definitely drain fast and i would need to charge my phone at least 2-3 times a day. Is it alright for me to do that or am i "abusing" it? =X

I don't know why this misconception still lives on; lithium ion batteries require no priming on first use. The WORST thing you can do with a li-ion battery is to fully deplete it before recharging. It is much better to top it off whenever possible; having said that leaving it turned on, on the charger once it is full is also not the best thing (though nowhere near as bad as depleting it fully).
I believe since this phone has a removable battery with external charger the best thing you can do is always charge your battery in the external charger and just switch out the battery when it gets to around 10%.
Nek0onna you should charge your phone whenever it's not full and you have a handy charger.

Can anybody check what the max charge rate is on this device with a battery monitor app? I have handfuls of 1A and a couple 2.1A chargers. I'd really like to charge at twice the rate if possible but not all devices support such rapid charging (kernel limits and such). Just curious before I buy one Thanks!
Even if Samsung slipped up and allowed a 2A charge i'd never want to try it, because tablet and laptop batteries are rated and manufactured for a higher current charge/discharge and most phone batteries would heat and swell up and possibly explode.
my HP touchpad charges with a 1A charger and it would be nice to use that with my sgs3.

Mine charges about 35% per hour.
It takes 3 hours to fully charge my phone. Coming from a Samsung Note 2 which charges completely in 1.5 hours, I find this really slow.

Try charging in Airplane Mode.
Well, there's two sides of fast charging.
One side, you need little time to charge (of course lol)
On the other side, the faster the charge (1,5 hour of full charge on lithiums is VERY fast) the more strains the battery experience in a charge cycle, hence shorter battery life. Since XZU battery is non removable, let's assume that sony play it safe..
Oh and CMIIW the charger for note 2 is rated at 2A DC output right (or was it the S4? I forgot)? That's higher than XZU's 1.5A DC output charger (CMIIW, haven't received my XZU yet).. So 1.5A DC to fill a 3Ah battery is about 2.5 hour, depending on the charge controller of the handset.
- Battery is 3050 mAh
- Charge current is 1 or 1.5 A(h), AKA 1000/1500 mAh
- Charging time for a 3000 mAh battery = (1000 mAh (1 A(h)) x 3 = 3000 mAh), or (1500 mAh (1.5 A(h)) x 2 = 3000 mAh)
TL;DR: It's normal. The bigger the battery, the longer it takes to charge.
You can use a 2 A charger, but it might damage the battery, or worse. Charging through a USB is also much slower (around 500 mAh)

Actually, charging lithium requires specific algortihm to maximize the battery's lifespan and capacity (CC-CV algorithm).
That's why phones manufacturers use "fast charge" marketing gimmick to charge your smartphone up to 80% capacity in just x hour. It is not actually "fast charge". It's just the CC phase, where the charging controller makes full use of the adaptor's output current. After that comes the CV phase, where every lithium batteries, no matter how big their capacity is, are in the mercy of current-voltage law... That said, charging a 3000mAh battery with a 1.5A adaptor will take more than 2 hours.
Technical things aside, charging (most of currently used) phone's batteries from "zero" to full capacity (which, to a certain extent, doesn't matter how big the battery's capacity is) in just 1.5 hours is near the limit of fast charging.

Now I know it is normal, thanks to your explanations. I was used to the Samsung Note 2's battery (3100 mAh) and it took just 1.5 hours to fully charge. I remember it being 1% increase per minute. Didn't know that the Samsung charger was 2A DC. Yikes, I sometimes use that to charge other devices.

Well for one thing, when you charge the battery, what you're doing is increasing its internal voltage. To charge the battery, you have to supply a higher voltage than the battery currently has, and so the higher the battery's charge, the slower it charges, all else being equal.
However, all is not equal, because at a certain point, the charger slows down the current it is delivering for safety reasons. These two things combine and the result is much slower charging after a certain point.

i used the charger from galaxy s4 ( 2A) to charge my xperia z ultra but it didn't charge it faster than the sony stock charger ( 1.5A). Weird. it seems that the phone doesn't allow more amps to be transfered. thats ashame cause if you use the phone while charging it doesn't charge almost at all. the consumption is higher than the charge rate
I just compared samsung 2A charger and Sony 1.5A on stock KK 4.4.4 (108). Samsung charger is better if you have limited time.

Debatable, but I don't know that much about battery tech, so i'm not going to speculate. I'll keep using the stock charger though, since the Ultra has an internal battery after all, and I won't risk damaging the battery by using a different charger.
I'm using the DK30 dock btw, and it takes 2 hours from 0-100%. Do you have the dock, or are you using a regular cable?

Using regular cable. Today I'll visit local Sony store for DK30 and I can repeat the test with the dock.

when the tablet was in the charger with 1000 mAh and my GF was playing plant vs zombies 2, it was not enough and was dead in 2 hours. So I put there the official charger 1500 mAh but then still it was not enough and was dead again.
Right now I tried to turn off the Location, Wi-Fi and she is playing. But is this normal??? Jesus you should be able to play with all the functions turned on and in the charger, not???
Edit: so it was emptied again even with everything off...
Edit2: i will try the origin cable because I used a different one

Did it show the charging icon while she was playing the game? I'm curious if it might be plugged but not recognizing that it should be drawing power from the charger...
Because charging cables are differently wired, you MUST either use the original cable or a cable which is definitely known to have the same wiring as the original one.

Differently wired how? I didn't realize there were wiring differences, please elaborate if you can, feel free to get technical.
I tried plugging my Z2 Tablet into a USB cable from a powered hub (computer off though), which I've used to charge my phone and my Kindle, and I know it wouldn't have much power, but it wouldn't charge at all, no charging icon, nothing. I've had no trouble charging it with a dedicated charger though.

So yes,
1. the charging icon is there
2. I even logged the history and during playing the plant vs zombies 2, the power is oscilating around +- the same level but still going down slowly as a trend
3. I tried today to get the power back to 25% and now I am charging it. I have the battery widget where it shows getting mA about 390 to 890 maximum. But even it is the original charger, original cable and the charger is 1500 mA it seems that the maximum level is 890???
Can someone else try Batter monitor widget what they get from it???

It sucks. It announced even today DURING charging from the original charger and cable that the charging is not strong enough. Wtf?

Ha, that is really funny. I am from the Czech Republic and called the Sony support. They forwarded me to Xperia support. At Xperia support the girl said that she cannot provide me exact information because official release date here is 8th of April so she doesnt have the manuals etc.
Then my type is 511E3 which she again was absolutely no aware what is the type because I should have 621 or maybe 521 but not 511.
So I can try the support line next week with the question how many mA should go to the tablet during charging.
But what she said was also that the charging time could be up to 6:20. But more than 6 hours? Maybe it was about the Z1 model? And also told me that playing games with the charger will still result in draining the battery.
I need some other guys here who can test it with playing some games and check the mA during charging...

And have you tried to charge it during heavy playing of some game? Which game, how long?
Can you test how much mA are you getting from the charger inside the tablet (battery monitor widget can do this)
I tried it yesterday playing "The Cave" for about 1 hour. Tablet was charging using a four port no name charger and a different cable the that the one provided.
I did not really check for anything , I just noticed the tablet got mildly hot.
I did not measure the current while playing, but I did earlier this week-end though.
I tested 3 chargers plus the provided one. A Galaxy S III charger, An ASUS TF300 and the 4-port no-name I used yesterday.
If I recall correctly I got around 0.9A from the GS3 and original charger and around 1.2A from the TF300 and 4-port ones.
I do some more thorough testing and let you know. I use a device on the charger output to measure how much current is coming through.
How long do you guys charge the tablet? I started with about 19% and to full 100% it was like 7-8 hours. It was turned on without wifi (stamina mode). I will try to charge it while turned off but still it is strange...
I dont know. Battery life is ok but the charging sucks for me. Any ideas if it is just me?

Yawn... Please use the charger and the cable which come with the device (which I bet my grandma on you didn't)! Other chargers or cable have either too low current or wrong wiring (which disables fast charging) or both.
The charging time over USB is 4-5 hours, like the first generation Tablet Z.
Yawn, yawn, if you took a look then you would read from this topic that I use original cable and original charger.
If the battery is 6600 mA and charger 1500 mA then the minimum for charging is 4,3 hours approximately. And as I said my maximum charging is 890 mA. So either something is taking 600 mA during the charging or the charger is bad or the cable is bad or I dont know.
But if it is in the stamina mode and still the maximum charging is 890 mA then something is weird.
I am asking now for about 5 times. Could somebody test during charging how many mA is going into the tablet? (You can use Battery Monitor Widget from google play).
Neither Xperia support is able to give me clear answer because the Tablet was not officially released here (which is funny, I have it).

Its not about charger. Or maybe it is. I want to know exactly how many mA are going to the tablet during charging. Nobody was able to give me the answer.It could be faulty charger, faulty cable, messy apps in the tablet (which I doubt) or whatever.
And Sony support, Xperia support is not able to give me clear answer to this. And also another guy in a review had similar problem. If we are in a Z2 Tablet topic then I supose that this is the right place to ask such questions... Not?
You can't just do 6600 divided by 1500. You are losing current all over the place when charging. It will probably be at least 50% wastage in heat, resistance in the wires etc etc. Also, the charger may say it does 1500, but that is peak when it's brand new under perfect conditions and the internal components will age and become less efficient over time too.
If you are using the tablet for a game, it will be running the processor at max power and drawing lots of current and all the heat it generates from the cpu and the battery during this time is wasted energy don't forget. If you want to battery to charge, you will need a charger that provides enough current to power the tablet and another 1000ma or so on top of that to charge your battery.
I bet Sony will state somewhere that you can only use it for low power activities like watching videos while on the dock if you want the battery to charge.

So it just means that in general with the original charger you are able to get to 10-13% per hour. So in average usage 9 hours of charging, heh. I saw yesterday (have to check it at home) that I had also around 20% per hour.
But in general these figures are normal and the usage of a battery with a little bit more heavy tasks is not very good. And charging can take a LONG time. I tried to charge it while turned off and I think you can get there below 6 hours.

mm.after read all of reply above, it is quite weird that only get 800mah while using 1500mah support charging cable? Maybe can try better quality of cable and also the power source, it is very crucial to get that. I have try some trial and error with different cables and charging with my galaxy s3, i find that with good quality of cable, i managed to get 1000mah max , but if using with cheap cable or power bank, i only managed to get 400-800mah. even after a long time using the original s3 cable, it will reduce to only 600mah. So my advice is try charging with different cable and find the best cable to charge ur device, if it is 1500mah supported, so i think it should be support to 1500mah. Thank you.

No, it is not weird at all since the tests were done with the screen turned ON, draining half the power.
The first line, battery only, tells you how much the screen and semi idle state is draining, with brightness at minimum. Cranking brightness up to maximum increased an extra 2.5% per hour drain if I recall correctly.
Charging with screen off would be about 20% per hour, or 5 hours to fully recharge. More or less in line with what people is reporting.

So, 721+719= 1440 (+21%/h), pretty close to the rated 1500 for the charger.
