Any good apps out there to use on my prime for an upcoming international trip? Switzerland and France in particular. Don't know if there's anything specific to those countries for tourist purposes, any cool GPS apps. anything one might find especially usefull on long trains/planes etc.
I would be interested in these also. My wife and I are going to Italy and then on a Mediterranean Cruise to several Ports.

RonH54, here are suggestions I received from a travel forum I follow:
Deutsche Bahn Navigator (more than just German schedules)
Öffi Station (bus schedules -- works GREAT)
BierApp (find biergartens in Franconia)
Google Translate
Google Goggles
Weather Underground
Lufthansa
Kayak
I'll update with others if I get any additional responses...

A currency converter
"Mobile CFF" is the app for all trains and public transports timetables in Switzerland. You can also buy train tickets with your credit card. A must have. But be carefull with roaming, Switzerland isn't part of the european regulation about roaming data, so it's damn expensive for foreigners.

Hi All
Heres a program released by Leaf - no GPS required
Uses cell and wifi sites to determine location.
I have used it often and it works fairly well here in South Africa. My bud was over in the States and used it on his P4350 while over there.
Enjoy

Isn't this like google maps?

What version are you running, ratmantoo?
I have version 1.1.0.0 installed -- but it's just an electronic map for Southern Africa.
A very good map, with street level detail, search facility, route-finder, etc .. but no location finding at all by GPS or cell/wifi sites.
Here's a good download link.
You can choose from Standard to Professional.

Have Fun.. Really nice program. but i prefer Google Maps..
Hi All,
On my Diamond i use Oziexplorer CE for viewing and using landmaps (I think thats the English word, the Dutch word is "stafkaarten." Please correct me if i'm wrong).
I was wondering if there is an app for android that can do the same. I'll be receiving my hero any day now and this is the last app i need to replace.
Many thanks in advance.
If there isn't any, thats allright too. Then at least i can stop searching
Google maps or Route 66
don't know of anything (Google Maps or Route66 or CoPilot or whatever is NO alternative for OziExplorer ).
Did you try asking the authors of OziExplorer if they have an Android build in the back of their heads somewhere?
Maybe this can be interesting?

sounds interestimg, ill try ...
did some tests with ownmap, but the map utility doesnt work and devs are not responding to mail
P.S: Looks promising, however, there are certain challenges with the conversion of ozi files, some segments are distorted and its about 200m away from the actual point ... In ozi, the maps are very precise. Will test and do some research, I'm shure, theres a solution to the 'minor' problems
Well, the month of august in Spain is the "hollidays month" and for this reason it's possible that developers are absents.
I like Oziexplorer and CompeGPS with my Windows Mobile PDA, and I will try change to Android with a new PDA HTC Hero and test this software Oruxmaps in it.
Greetings
OruxMaps
Obviously I did a mistake in converting, a second try lead a to much better calibration. First impression is very good, OruxMaps shows my position and let me record tracks and logfiles, I can set waypoints and follow a route (not tested yet). First wish: a tool to lock the keys and blank the screen to save energy why tracking a hike ... But as said, very promising application
looks very promising indeed. Does anyone know how to convert ozfx3 files to be used in this app??

never tried it, as I have the original files ...
but you might try demapper from terraperfecta
Can't download it from the market. Known issue?
I've created an Android application called Viamici for which you do not need a PC to calibrate a map - you can do it on a phone
New ideas for Ozi or substitute on Android?
Does anybody know about new developements on the problem: Running Ozi on an android-device?
Next wekk I visit the USA and will buy a Nexus One. It would be great if I could go on with all my Ozi-calibrated maps. Thanks for any idea!
"We are currently doing trials and evaluating whether we will develop an Android version." - http://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/faq_os.html
Some encouragement from our side would not be bad: [email protected]
Encouraging?
and this was Ozi's answer to my encouragement last week:
"An Android version will not be available for a considerable time."
Ozi Explorer replacement
Hi all,
Some time ago I wrote crossplatform library for reading Ozi Explorer maps
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/swampex/) and Ozi Explorer equivalent for Linux
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/ozex/) - and even used it in offroad competitions.
Moreover, I started project for Android and got a development version.
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/).
Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to the lack of time, but if someone want to take a part in development - please contact me.
BTW, I'm rare visitor of xda forum, so e-mail will be preferred way.
Best wishes.
yozi: replacement for ozi explorer on android
I've decided to reinvent the wheel and released alpha version of yozi - Ozi Explorer replacement for Android OS.
Features:
- Topographic maps rendering (ozf2/ozfx3 formats)
- Maps automatic load for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a currend location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Import waypoints from GPX, KML, WPT files
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Shared waypoints database with RMaps2 application
- Worldwide search for places by name using Google's API (requires network access). You can search for a city, street, lake or river and view it's location on your topographic map.
Can be downloaded here (sorry, I'm novice here and can't post direct URLs yet):
_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/
Yozi works great!! It reads directly the Ozi maps files used in the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Oziexplorer. There is no need to convert the files using a Desktop computer. Like the Windows Mobile version YOZI can read ozf2/ozfx3 files. These can be converted from other format using the normal desktop version of OziExplorer.
Congratulations!
I really recommend it to everybody. Easy, simple and clear app:
http://code.google.com/p/yozi/
BTW: Why is it not yet in the Market?

Just have no time. I'll prefer to add some more features and polish the app first.

http://yozi.googlecode.com
- Supports topographic maps compatible with Ozi Explorer CE (ozf2/ozfx3)
- Fast maps auto-indexing on start
- Maps automatic loading for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a current location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Ozi Explorer waypoints support (import from .wpt)
- Google Earth waypoints support (import from .kml)
- Geocaching waypoints support (import from .gpx)
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Set waypoint as target
- Tap-and-see: tap on waypoint to see direction and distance to it

Hey DotNetCoder,
It seems to be one v useful app as I fly a lot. I will def give it a try. Any chance to get Luton and London City on the supported airports list?
Nice, thanks DotNetCoder....
....What are your plans for epanding the app to include other UK or indeed worldwide airports? I mainly fly to Cork, my point here is that the app is only useful on one leg of my journey.
Thanks what a useful little app All working fine @ time of testing hoping not to find any bugs
what about the second busiest airport in the UK? Manchester......
US Flights and HD2
Just installed it and tried it briefly, lovely app.
I couldn't seem to find any US flights on it (or is it just me being blind)
Also, I've installed it on the HD2, but can't get the application back after awakening the phone. I have to end task in task manager and re-start it.
Any clues?
really nice app indeed. It would be perfect if it can include some other airport too. Thanks anyway
Great wee app, especially as i have some flying to do in the next little while. Two thoughts, can you give it a pretty icon, i just get the standard white exe icon.
Also another request for additional airports, the two Belfast ones would be really useful for me.
Thanks for the feedback guys and gals.
I originally only intended this for UK BAA airports, as they use the same code.. but after looking at some of the other suggested airports - they shouldn't be too hard to add.
There's lots of places, so I will focus on UK and Ireland international airports, then move onto the US, and then back to Europe.
This project could be quite lengthy - if any other VB.NET coders are reading this and want to help me write HTML parsers that would be v cool. Get in touch via PM if you can (of does anyone know of RSS feeds for this data?).
Before I release any more airports, I'll fix the update code - at the moment it locks out the GUI when refreshing, this will move into the background.
A globe icon has been added, so no nasty white spaces in the next version!

great!! Nice to hear that..looking forward for the next release
Also a provision to select a default airport would be helpful.
Now when I start the app - it always goes to Stansted first and then I have to select Heathrow from the menu.
Overall a really great app! Very helpfull I must say...a must have if you travel
And also if possible a search/filter option - by airline, by flightnumber and by arrival location!

I sorted the problem by installing Duttys Task Manager....Works great now.
I can't see any flights to and from the US, only europe. Are US flights on a different Database?
New update out - your features have been noted, not done much work this week
cool app, found on the open market place, tho only version 1.0, will update to 1.1 later
gatwick and stansted all good,
another vote for london city tho
WOW - great app... adding more airports ?
Is it possible to add London Luton and City airport ?
Also, if possible to add the Terminal information taht would be FANTASTIC !!
Keep on the good work ..
Ravel
Development is temporarily on hold.
I'll be back soon though.
gr8 application congrats m8!!!!!!
could u add John Lennon Airport Liverpool?
thanx a lot again and...walk on...
That'll be on the list. Cheers
Lots of work done on this, but not usable.
I coded in support for FlightStats.com, but it has a bizarre forced redirect to their mobile site, which doesn't have the info I'm looking for.
Background downloading is also in-place (no longer locks up the app during a download) - and you can cancel the download or quit.
Next airports I'm adding support for are Aena (Spanish), as I'm going on holiday there soon
Hi all,
Well, I am getting a bike mount for my Streak this weekend.
I roam about a lot in the city on my bike now! ( and I get lost a lot too! new city .. )
so, I was thinking.
So whats one good Navigation software that has:
Voice navigation (optional)
Turn by turn directions (required in text atleast!)
Offline maps (must!)
<GPS assist is must! for the accuracy..>
City road maps (e.g. Bangalore, India)
Please suggest.
(Offline maps to ensure min battery usage..)
Thanks,
Sony.
Google Maps or NDrive
Google maps navigation supports all of the features you asked but the offline maps download automatically from a round you and it caches them so you can't always be shure that they are always there.
But if you defiantly need offline use NDrive, it is not for bikes but it is good and quite cheap and very fast, I use it all the time with my streak
Just checked..
Just checked!
Brut maps is what I need, but, again.. I think it has difference from the legal terms from Google maps..
Ndrive.. hmm, I think, its not good in India.
is there a trial version of it?
Thanks for that..
any other softwares/maps stuff?
care,
Sony.
P.S. stevepork: there you go.. first thanks
Not sure if CoPilot is in your area, but it works quite well here in north america. I attempted to use it in Mexico, and the results were less than stellar.
A free option is Navit, which can work alongside with Google Maps, so you can get a starting and end point that works. Navit's maps are all on SD. It's a work in progress but does include TTS.

SYGIC MOBILE MAPS FOR INDIA is al you are going to need.
Suggest that you have a look at this web site:
http://mobile.jack-frost.co.uk/android_sat_nav_apps.php
It has very good reviews of all the different (on-line and off-line) navigation applications that are available on Android.
(In the UK, I am using NDrive quite happily, although it's not as good as TomTom under WM6. I wish that TomTom would produce an Android version.)
Navigon Select
I was installing Navigon Select
and it works Perfect. Actually i use 3.5.4 with 3D Maps. I got fully Europe and USA maps also available.
I like it very much
I've been trying to find a nav app that will let me import pre-planned trips.
In my research I found only two; 1) copilot, 2) HTC Locations with Trips tab.
Well I can't stand #1, and it seems that #2 was only available in Asia, unless I'm missing something? it seems like a feature that should be standard as it has since the first days of dedicated gps devices but it still hasn't arrived on Android, not even in the Google suite of apps despite the constant posts in the Google forums requesting this function.
being able to create a specific route or record a route for the purpose of sharing and reuse I don't think is a lot to ask.
until this happens their will always be a market for a dedicated GPS.

that looks like a perfect companion to my Colorado GPS! I tracked our whole summer holiday with it, but it's be great to be able to see that track on a mobile device (that's a bit larger than that 2-something inch screen that my Colorado has )
