updating gingerbread - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a trio droid tablet (rk2918 based), it runs gingerbread 2.3.1, and I was wondering how hard it would be or even if it would be possible to update/upgrade it to 2.3.7, would it need a new kernel? I've already done a lot of stuff to it, such as added ext4 support and converted the filesystems over to it, gotten cwm installed on it, etc.. but i'd like to upgrade it to a newer version of the OS, as most of the mods don't work on this version of gb.
thanks
pat

Good morning,
i would suggest you to search for a rom for your tablet and just install it through cwm after doing a full nandroid backup (so u can get back afterwards if sth. went wrong)
the kernel is included in the rom package so i would say just have a try and ckech out what happens but remember to make a full wipe of data/cash partition in the cwm
fare well & be succesfull

I have a technaxx techtab rk2918 too. I have ics rooted and it works ok. I don't know if yours it's the same version of the oem. In my signature you have how i upgraded mine (don't do nothing till you are sure and I don't know if it's going in your tab) and in the comments you'll find a user named oma who is working ahead with kernels and cm to our rk29.
Congrats +1 to a rk29 forum !

Building Upgrade 2.3.7/3.0 ROM from ClockworkMod Recovery Android 2.3.3 Backup

Hi! I have an Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread HCL ME X1 Tablet. I successfully rooted it all manually by using ADB and installed "su" and superuser tools. I manually installed ClockWorkMod Recovery 5 by using Terminal. Then I created ClockWorkMod Recovery 5 full backups. I have the factory reset ClockWorkMod Recovery backup of a fresh Stock which came from Carrier. Doesn't contains any defect. The Carrier/Company won't release any further upgrades, and is not giving any original stock ROM.
All I ask with due patience and respect, to guide me to manually build an Upgrade ROM from 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 or from 2.3.3 to 3.0 Honeycomb. I would certainly require original company device drivers and factory files from the the backup. I won't mind any type of comment. Can this new 2.3.7/3.0 upgrade ROM be built from the older 2.3.3 ROM, manually? Please guide me step by step. Tell me the tools, configuration, drivers, kernel, etc. If you need any other information, please ask and I will inform I won't use update.zip flashing, instead I would manually flash/copy the images via ClockWorkMod Recovery/ADB console. Hope my friends guide me.

2.3.3 to has barely any changes. And 3.0 was not open sourced until recently, it will be very hard to make your own ROM from this

It will be my first ever try, if 2.3.7 is easier to build as an upgrade to my 2.3.3 android, please let me learn the steps and knowledge to do it. Currently, I haven't found any information regarding how to manually build an upgrade from an older version Backup image files, to a brand new version. I could at least try with your guidance and then learn the things which will come handy in building 3.0 and 4.0 Android + ROMs.

[Q] Do i need to Root before Installing a custom rom (vegan-tab)?

Hello everyone, My friend recently gave me his G Tablet to "update" it. I've read most of the guides and have a good idea on what needs to be done. I am currently on stock rom 1.1. I was just wondering before i backup my rom with NVFlash and install CWM, do i need to Root my device first ? I went through that gtablet for dummies site and it does not mention anything about rooting the tablet. I intend to install vegan tab 7.1.0. Does the rom come pre-rooted or will i need root the device first before running nvflash and installing cwm ?
Also im looking for a stable rom. Is vegan-tab stable enough or should i be looking at another rom? remember i am on bootloader 1.1
No need to root before installing a new Rom. The new rom will give you root access. Vegan seems to be a favorite for stability. Not sure if the most recent update has a version for the 1.1 bootloader though. This site will walk you through everything you need to know http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/

The boot loader issue had been debated at some length in the past.
Some dev (roebeet) pushed for development into 1.2 - some stayed with 1.1
Either way, there are some roms for both.
You should learn NV flash and try out a few and see what works for you.
HC flashback 10.3 is slick and nice.
Beasty/clem ultimate is very fast and stable.
On a side note, ICS is in development pending kernel work. It will be on a 1.2 BL base...fwiw

Future upgrade to ICS from CustomROM

I don't know very well, and in deep, all this steps to upgrade to a CustomROM:
changing file sistem to ext4
deoxing
aligning
changing kernel
changing bootloader
...and I'm a bit afraid to try a CustomROM (CM7 or CM9) for all these changes made by the ROM to the phone.
Using a CustomROM (when ICS will come out officially from Motorola) I think it will be impossibile use OTA upgrade, right?
So: how we will upgrade officially to fully official ICS ROM?
(I'm a Windows programmer so I can understand your technical answers)

To be able to install a custom rom you need to do the following:
1. Root phone
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Install custom recovery
4. Install custom rom
There is a guide for beginners on how to do all of them:
Thanks for the answer, but I was interested in "how to install official ICS, when it will be avaiable, if I'm already using CM7 or CM9 CustomROM with all those changes like Ext4, deoxed, etc..."
Though there may be better ways, if I was faced with the scenario you are discussing, I would flash the newest "stock rom" like Nottachtrix (keeping is ext3 and with a stock kernel) to my phone before flashing a stock ICS fruitcake, which someone will likely post.
The purpose of the intermediate flash, as I see it, would be to return the phone to the state nearest to stock (kernel, ext3, etc.) before applying an upgrade that may rely on stock variables in order to properly "take". Making your own fruitcake from the OTA update files is not remarkably difficult either, but I am sure there will be at least a few devs left making the official ICS release even better. I am eager to see what changes Moto makes to webtop for the Atrix, or if the webtop changes are just for newer models.
Good luck!

Lol…sorry misunderstood you . From what I know going back to stock is risky business. There are some people who did go back using fruitcake. I think the previous post gives a good method.
Ok, thanks.
I'll stay with Stock until I can try official ICS....if official ICS is not very good, I'll consider to use a CustomROM at the end

Trouble U/G Android 2.4 to 4.0

SOLVED: Thanks to ares05 I already got the rom I wanted! I didn't find that specific rom in the first place... Anyway, anyone googles for this same matter can use my thread as an Q&A. The only thing I did to get Neatrom Lite working was putting it on Internal SD (Without wiping data). And flashing it (choose zip from internal SD) from the custom CWM recovery, then reboot. (Yes for beginners, CWM is an requirement!). For Nexus layout lovers try regular Cyanogenmod, Trebuchet or MIUI. They are all great.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
Question to myself: did I researched, googled and watch the video upon registration?
Yes, but that doesn't solve my specific problem or provide enough information to try the risky situation.
Problems:
I have trouble upgrading from Android 2.3.5 to 4.0 through Odin3 v1.85. It's very unclear what Rom I need to get to flash.
I flashed through Odin3 Android 4.0 before, through reading a lot and accepted the try and ended up getting boot loops. So I flashed back my android 2.3.5 XWKJ5. that gave me CWM but also voided the possibility to upgrade through Samsung Kies what I regretted later.
Then I thought, Okay... I'll get the basic Custom Rom: Cyanogenmod 9.1 then, through wiping cache/factory and dalvik cache and flashing through zip file on SD card everything went great. But I was unhappy with CM9 because the playstore app didn't work anymore and I didn't liked the overall layout of the camera, apps and some other minor bug I found - I forgot... So I went back to Android 2.3.5 with nandroid backup.
Also I have ROM manager but that doesn't let me update the specific CWM 6.0.1.0 rom as it says "An error occurred while downloading your recovery." Probably more people have this?!
What I need to know to solve this matter:
I want the default (stock) android 4.0+ ICS firmware on my phone with root. Can someone provide me the exact link of the .tar/.tar.md5 file needed to upgrade my phone to that android version or higher if the rom is available for it (4.1.3?). Since I find it hard to search the correct rom needed to get this result. The rom you might provide me can be slightly modded but that's okay, as long as I have all the ICS features and the layout it naturally comes with.
All the current Phone specific data you might found useful in helping me:
Samsung Galaxy S2 (I-9100)*
Android 2.3.5
Gingerbread.XWKJ5
CF-Root 5 Kernel (Root, CWM, Superuser).
+Has made an Nandroid backup through recovery.
+Backed up my apps through Titanium Backup.
*It's no AT&T or T-Mobile version, luckily.
TL;DR: I WANT TO UPGRADE ANDROID 2.3.5 TO 4.0+, WHAT SPECIFIC ROM I NEED TO FLASH?
I hope someone good willing enough is there to help me and I will check this thread often for any replies,
Scy.
There are a bunch of ROMS here which will give you the stock ICS look and feel. I haven't tried all of them but if that's the kinda ROM you want then you could check out the ROM that I'm currently using, Neatrom Lite. Follow the link on my signature to the ROM thread. The latest version for Neatrom is 4.0.4 and you could download it from the link given on the first Page of the thread.
If you wanna try something else you check out the following links :

Yeah, that's sort of what I want. The biggest reason of wanting to update is that my brother has stock ics 4.0 and his battery consumes like 50% less energy in locked mode(s), factor in the fact that his update cleaned a lot of the processes and unused apps. Also I am fond of the original stock look - especially the camera controls.
I will try neatrom (lite) later tonight I checked out the official forum Page, looks very very to my liking. I am so excited, thanks for showing will report later if it worked out.
- EDIT -
Yaaaay! Everything went flawlessly, it's cool that there is no Wipe needed as the forum thread indicates. I don't know if it works fluidly yet, but it seems everything is up and running like if it was original ICS. I think the Siyah kernel helps alot in battery usage which means alot to me because I travel alot. I will keep this rom for a long while if no bugs/freezes pop up! Seems so promising, thank you thank you thank you~~!!

[Q] How to start a new ROM for a GEN8 using the old one?

Hi,
I'm sure that's a dumb question, but I had to ask it.
I have a Gen8 tablet, and would like three things:
Backup the whole ROM in order to put it back later on
Use that ROM in order to build another one for the same device
Use that ROM (look&feel, apps and so on) to build another one for another device
I've seen that some firmwares (with root) are available for this tablet, and would like to understand how they were built.
Did the developers start from aosp + archos "modified" kernel, or did they start from the existing ROM (aos files from Archos)? Or even a mix of all that?
I installed the SDE yesterday, and have yet to make a complete backup.
Thanks.
Its hard to say where to start after asking these questions. You should read a lot before doing it. Roms based on Cyanogenmod like Buzcuit's one are easy to backup. If you base a new rom on the existing one you will get the bugs of the main rom (Bizcuit's for example) and the bugs of the new rom.
Thanks for your reply.
I don't know if I'll try a new ROM for such an old device, but do you know how these ROMs were made?
I've seen there how to build a new kernel for the tablet, but not a complete system (I often build android-x86, but never tried aosp).
This is rooted stock firmware. Its made by Archos. You should read a bit more about it. I am not a developer and I have pretty basic knowledge and I havent tried myself. Biz and the others can help you much more then me. But ya, u have to read pretty much to start.
Ok, thanks.
