Could you send me your file?
Or you can dump adb log using "Error log dump" app.

I have an off-name tablet from eBay running Gingerbread and having problems getting video files to play on it. No matter what i use/encode, i get an error saying "Sorry, this video cannot be played."
What is the recommended file type/encoding settings i should be converting to for Android devices?
is it a cheap $100-150 tablet? Those have a lot of problems. The video may be to high quality. I recommend 480p vids. Either that or reset the tablet. Or it may be to cheap to play anything. Sorry, try the low quality video, does YouTube work?
Thank me if I helped!
try using a different video player like VLC.

what video support is there with the latest version (3.5 alpha)?
What video player app should I install or should I use stock video app?
What video codecs/wrappers are supported? I have tried playing h264 mp4, mkv, and normal xvid (not 720p), and none of them worked.
Dice player, it's the best video player of Android, but on TP it works very randomly
Try MX player.

ARMv7 NEON. Even with the codec pack, the APQ8060 could still have trouble with anything more than 720p HiP h264.

I've been using mobo player without any problems. Haven't tried anything higher than 720p h264.

Moboplayer or Mobo Video Player?
Also, which codec plugin did you installed?
The irony is that all the movies that these struggle with play beautifully on WebOS with Kalemsoft Media Player. Will they ever be able to port this over to Android?
For now, I guess i can reboot to webOS to watch a movie, but it is a pain since WebOS takes forever to boot up.
Ok, I finally found one player that plays most files pretty well. It is VLC player beta:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517415
The trick is to change the aspect ratio to "Center" so that it doesn't have to resize. Works great with 720p but will make anything less like 480 smaller.
Otherwise, you will get pixelation.
Still don't understand how you guys get MX player to work great. I get video stutter like crazy with high profile 720p videos.
I dont get why you are having so many issues.
I just downloaded mx player, nothing else and it plays my 1080 and 720 mkvs flawlessly..
I've been using rock player since my nook color days. It opens everything I can throw at it.

Search for it on the Market/Play Store.
I flashed ICS build 6, and mx video player doesn't open. It gives the message "unsupported device" and closes.

I really would like to use mx video player. the other video players don't hold the candle to MX video player.
Same issue with ICS 4.0.4 on Galaxy Nexus LTE. Was fine on 4.0.2.

Tell me, did you use Titanium Backup to restore MX Video Player?
I decided to remove Mx Video completely [including codec] and I reinstalled from the market, and it fixed everything! Worth a shot. Tell me if this also works for ya

Good man! I had tried just removing MX's data via Ti, which still didn't work. But upon your comment, I tried uninstalling, then just restoring the app only via Ti and it's good again!

edit: this was before you replied, and before I got it working:
That's good! I emailed the MX Video dev, they asked for a logcat. So then then said it was a cyanogenmod bug.
So I was stuck without a video player [Stock movie app cannot seek large h.264 MP4, it FC (ICS build 6)]. I got pretty tired of that fast, and I seemed to remember other people saying about other apps "reinstall from the market".
But I wonder why you have to uninstall it first?
Hi All,
I've read a bunch of thread but none of them has resolve my problem.
I was used to play MKV files with my Galaxy S2 without any problems with the default player.
But since I've made a restore of my phone, I'm now unable to play the same MKV file. There's only sound, no image. (I have tried some other player, none of them have worked)
Anyone has an idea of what's going on here? Am I missing a codec or something?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Are you on stock Samsung ROM?
Yes I'm using the original ROM
Model Number: GT-I9100M
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100MUGKG2
When I connect my device to Kies, it shows me that it is up to date.
No idea what could have happened?!
No .
You could try factory reset again .
You could try copy a new file and see how that plays .
jje
Ok thanks, I'll save everything and do a reset and see what will happen.
Still doesn't work, I really don't know why, that pisses me off.....
This is the movie I'm trying to play with my phone.
File Type: MKV
Size: 2213.18MB
Video Size: 1920 x 1080
Length 01:01:08
Video codec: h264
Sound codec: Dolby AC3 / FAST Multimedia AG DVM
Planet Earth from BBC
Try to clear data and cache from your video-app in settings > apps > runing apps > all

Thanks for the advice, but it still doesn't work.
I'm wondering if there's any kind of limitation inside the new Virgin firmware or ROM that doesn't allow me to play MKV files, cause I've tried with other MKV files in 720p and this is not working either, so it's not a corrupted file or anything.
Update:
I took a look at diffrent Galaxy S2 spec from Canada and United States
Here's what I've found:
Canadian (Virgin):
Video format supported: 3GP, MP4 and WMV (unprotected)
US (AT&T):
Video format supported: 3GP, AAC, AAC+, AMRNB,AVI,eAAC+,H.263, H.264, MP4,MPEG4, QCIF, WMV; Video, Streaming
I think I'll need to unlock my phone, do you guys think it will allow me to view my files?
Thanks again

Have you tried MX Video player? I think it's the best videoplayer available on market and it supports almost all file extensions.

What kind of video files? .avi, .mp3, . mp4 (even videos convertet to "android" version)
Resolution? Highest that can be played for evo 3d (i think 1280x760)
Bitrate, codec? I really dont know, ussualy clips from youtube and music (.mp3)
Does a reboot help? No
Have you tried another sd card? No, i dont have another sd card.
ps: I return all to factory setting and it seems ok now, i google it and most of ppl saying its because of adobe flash player update so i still didnt update adobe from factory settings. And to be more worse, adobe stopped updating flash player.

It's not Adobe Flash. Flash player has nothing to do with the music player cutting out.
Usually when it cuts out, it means the file is not accessible. So, it could be an SD card issue..
Try borrowing an SD card from a buddy and see what happens. Also, don't be scared to update flash player.

If you have problems playing videos it might be a codec problem.
Rockplayer is a pretty big app (get the ARM7 version for the Evo 3D) but it plays most videos that other players don't.
